From the Principal’s Desk The month of giving and celebration is upon us in our school and out in the community! We are so

proud of our students and their families for supporting worthy causes locally and across the world.

Our leadership class collected and delivered Christmas shoeboxes and even volunteered at the

warehouse for Samaritan’s Purse. Once again our little school was incredibly supportive of this

endeavor. Our annual food drive is underway in conjunction with leadership and Santa’s

Anonymous. This is a great group that ensures our donations help out local families.

We certainly have a lot of talent to celebrate in our little school! Come on out for the kindergarten to

grade 4 Christmas Concert on December 5th to celebrate a Very Beary Christmas. The show

starts at 6:00 pm with the dress rehearsal starting at 1:00 pm. For more holiday entertainment

check out the Band Christmas Concert on December 12th starting at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome

to join in the festivities!

This is also the season to spend some extra time with family and friends. As the weather changes,

so do our family activities. We hope that you are all able to enjoy the fresh air outdoors and the

coziness of your homes over the holidays. This is a time to recoup and renew our spirits and

energy for the coming year. May you all have a fabulous December - rest up for the new year and

spend some quality time with those you love.

Happy Holidays

Mrs. Kellert's Grade Two class would like to thank the

Water Valley Forest Nursery for their donation of 2

lovely plants for our "liquids" experiment. Do plants need

water or will any liquid help them grow? How do the many

things we regularly spill affect vegetation? Please ask any of

us about the results of our experiment at the end of the month.

A huge thanks Bryce Quigley and Meaghan Bellamy for speaking to the Grade 9 Careers Class.

To all those who hosted the "Take your kid to work" students this year—we appreciate your participation!!

Thank you to Ms. Sheppard for organizing the Middle

School trip to A Christmas Carol at Didsbury High

school, it was a great trip, thank you!

A bouquet for Sheri Laye who donated the gorgeous

Christmas decorations to the school!

Thanks to everyone who donated for Movember. We raised

$570 that will be donated towards Men's Cancers. We also

reached our goal! Mr. Hutcheon is sporting a new do and

be on the lookout for Mr. Youngs’ new look!

Counsellor’s Corner

GRADE 11 and 12 PARENTS: It’s so hard for a student to choose a post-secondary institute if he/she has never

been on campus! If you missed the Open House, just take your teenager for a coffee on campus or I can help you to

arrange a tour! They can also attend “student for a day” classes to get an idea of what programs have to offer.

Parents, another way to help your teenager is to assist with the scholarship search. The ALIS website,

studentawards.com or myblueprint.ca have many listed. Each school offers money, does your employer give

scholarships? Your Gas Company? UFA?

GRADE 9 PARENTS: I so enjoy working with your teenagers once a week in our “career class.” They have finished

a working resume, researched careers, completed online personality and interest surveys, and general career

development. We looked at “soft skills” for the work world (not being on a phone, dress code, being punctual) and

have practiced interview skills. Our guest speaker this week will be “Ben the Paramedic!” Bryce Quigley came in 2

weeks ago and spoke on the Mechanics Trade and Meaghan Bellamy talked about what life is like as an “Animal

Health Technologist.” We will also be having a varsity athlete, a current university student, a pilot and many more!

Our Grade 9s had 100% attendance in the National “Take your kid to work” day! They travelled with a vet, framed,

worked on trucks, fenced, attended meetings, helped trim a horse, the list goes on and on! This is a great opportunity

to see how hard their parents work and find out a little more about different careers! Thanks to all who hosted our

students!

I would like to add my thanks to Mrs. Harvey and Mrs. Macdonald for adding this so very important grade 9 Careers

program to our list of courses at Cremona School! Students are getting so much information on occupations,

learning researching skills, and listening to many interesting speakers!

Modeling what great citizenship truly means

A Message from the Superintendent

We are always proud of the goodwill our students and staff share with those around them each day, but

particularly at this time of year. During the holiday season, we can so clearly see the impact our Chinook’s

Edge school communities are making as they answer the call to be good global citizens. They are sharing our

caring culture by filling hundreds of shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, organizing fundraising events

for our local food banks, performing seasonal music at seniors’ homes, and much more.

Whether through quiet acts of kindness that affect a single person, or through grand gestures that impact an

entire community, our students are modeling what great citizenship truly means. In a world where lessons in

the importance of being a good neighbour, a helpful friend and a respectful citizen are all around us, we

applaud our students and staff for the plentiful examples of their kindness. Thank you to everyone who

nurtures this generosity of spirit all year long in Chinook’s Edge!

Kurt Sacher

Superintendent of Schools

Welcome to Kindergarten!

From the Sports Desk

Well volleyball has finally wrapped up, and it was a very successful year. Our Middle School girls team showed huge improvement, thanks so much to Mrs. Reid for coaching. Our Middle School boys team, coached by Mr. Lerbekmo placed first in playoffs, and after a few struggles at start the year, Madame Dougherty’s Jr A girls volleyball team won the zone competition to bring home the banner. Our Senior girls and JV boys volleyball teams also had impressive years, bringing home the Bronze and Silver in zones respectively. Thank you to Mr. Hutcheon and Mr. Youngs for coaching them. Again, congratulations on a fantastic year and thank you so much to everyone who helped out throughout the season.

Of course, volleyball finishing up means that basketball has started. It looks like we will have three girls teams, a Middle School B team and Middle School A team and a JV team. We will also have two boys teams, a Middle School A team and a JV team. Games start right away with the first JV home games being on December 4th. Come on out to cheer on the Cremona Cougars. Good luck to all of our teams and here's hoping for another successful season.

We would like to extend a special thank you to all that donated a shoebox for Operation

Christmas Child. This year we were able to volunteer at the Samaritan’s Purse warehouse, in

Calgary, to help ship the boxes overseas to over 15 countries. It truly was a wonderful and

rewarding experience for us and we would highly recommend it to all who want to give a

helping hand this season.

Christmas always gives us so much joy and we want to spread it around. This month we are

having Holiday Spirit Week Dec 17-21. We will be running our annual food drive again this

year, the classes with the most points will get hot chocolate and cookies in January. Please

check out the website for the points breakdown.

We will also be selling Secret Candy Canes at lunch,

for $1 which will be delivered on December 21, this

year all proceeds will be donated to Santa’s Anony-

mous.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE

The role of School Council is to inform parents, school staff, students and

community members so we can work together to enhance the student experience.

In November, School Council enjoyed a presentation on anxiety by a clinical

consultant from Alberta Health Services. The breadth of anxiety issues and

various means of alleviating these were discussed. We all left breathing more

deeply and with more mindfulness.

The December School Council will focus a discussion on PowerSchool. Many

parents have had difficulties both accessing and utilizing this resource. Expertise

will shine a light on PowerSchool and discuss how it may play a role in both

simplifying and enhancing school-parent communication. Our regular School

Council is held Tuesday, December 11th at 7 p.m. in the school library. Our meeting

also includes our regular overview of school activities. Thank-you for wanting to take an

active involvement in your child’s education.

Contact Michael with any questions at 637-3973 or [email protected]

AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES—The Man Who Invented Christmas In 1843 London, author Charles Dickens finds himself in financial trouble after writing three unsuccessful novels in a row.

Desperate for a hit, Dickens relies on real-life inspiration and his vivid imagination to bring Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other
