December shows no sign of things slowing down around here, either! On
Thursday, Dec. 7, the entire school will be traveling to Pr ince Alber t to
attend Alice in Wonderland at the EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts. We will
return around noon, and enjoy our annual Christmas Luncheon. Thanks so very
much to the SCC, Wild Rose parents and guardians, and community members
who have generously offered to donate food or time to make this huge event
happen. As your holiday calendars begin to fill up, please mark Wednesday, Dec.
20, and plan on attending our Christmas Concert. It is a wonderful evening where
we have a chance to showcase our amazing students, followed by time to connect
with family, friends and neighbours over coffee and Christmas baking.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful
holiday season, and all the best in 2018. Have a safe and enjoyable break
(beginning Saturday, December. 23, and returning to school Monday, January 8,
2018).
Happy Holidays,
Ms. Leanne Tretiak

One of the best gifts you can give your child is a good education. It’s tempting to
extend your vacation by a few days, but it is important to consider the impacts on
your child’s learning. Just a few missed days here and there can add up to too
much lost learning time. So we look forward to seeing your child in school every
day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our
students will be learning. Have a Happy Holiday!
Travel down the rabbit hole and join Alice, one of literature’s most beloved
heroines, in her madcap adventures. Featuring updated songs from Disney’s
thrilling animated motion picture, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland JR. is a
fast-paced take on the classic tale. The ever-curious Alice’s journey begins
innocently enough as she chases the White Rabbit. Her adventures become
increasingly more strange as she races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar and
beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game! Roles are plentiful, including
three Cheshire Cats and dozens of other wonderfully wacky characters,
providing plentiful opportunities to showcase students of all different musical
skill levels. A chorus of kids playing in the park, rock lobsters, talking fish,
royal cardsmen, unbirthday partiers, as well as a group of mean-girl flowers,
allows for a highly expandable cast size.
Grade One/Two: Miss Gunderson
Thank you to all who made it out for parent-teacher interviews! It
is always nice to see lots of friendly faces around the school on
such a busy night.
The grade 1/2 class has been buzzing lately! The students have been running our
Morning Meetings, setting writing and reading goals, participating in the Remembrance
Day service, taking in the book fair, and SO much more! We have moved from a busy
time of year to an even busier one! We have begun our preparations for the much-
anticipated Wild Rose Christmas concert. Please expect to see our song lyrics come
home within the next week and please have your child practice the lyrics every night as
part of his or her reading time.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me
during school hours at 306-747-2323, by email at [email protected], or send me
a message on Seesaw!
Thank you for your continued support,
Miss Gunderson
SANTA’S JOKE CORNER
Q: What is the first thing elves learn in school?
A: The “elf”-a-bet!! 3
Kindergarten: Mrs. Klaassen
The kindergartens have been continuing to work hard on their writing goals. We have
been practicing many different ways to write our names with a capital letter at the
beginning and lowercase throughout. We have been using magnetic letters, shaving
cream, whiteboards wooden letters and many other ways to have fun while we are
practicing.
We have many exciting things happening in the kindergarten classroom and around our
school in December! On Thursday, December 7th
, is our trip to the E.A. Rawlinson Centre
to watch Alice in Wonderland followed by our annual Christmas dinner. Thank you to all
of the parents who are donating food and/or assisting with this special day. December
20th is the evening of our Christmas concert. Please have your child in our classroom 15
minutes before the concert begins. Please send a Santa hat for your child to wear for this
evening. You can send this to school at any time before then as we will be practicing with
them on. If you need help finding a Santa hat, please let us know and we will be happy to
help! Our last day of kindergarten before the Christmas break is Thursday, December
21st. We will be having our class Christmas party on this day and the students are
welcome to wear their pajamas and bring a small stuffy to school. Our first day back for
kindergarten after the Christmas break is Monday, January 8th
.
Happy Holidays to you and your families!
Grade Five/Six: Miss Roth
The students have been very busy this month. The
grade 5’s have been writing and reading about Mystery
stories and the Grade 6’s have been writing and
reading about descriptive stories! Every student has
their very own writing goal, please ask your child what
their goal is and how many stars they have earned
towards their goal ! The grade 5’s have worked very
hard to complete their long division unit while the
grade 6’s have been busy working at angles! I am so
proud of each and every student and am so lucky to have them in my classroom
This month will be a busy one with all of the Christmas festivities happening, there is
the Christmas Musical in Prince Albert, the Christmas Dinner, and the Christmas
Concert! December will be very exciting!

Grade Three/Four: Ms. Young
The month of November was very busy with Remembrance Day,
parent teacher interviews, pictures and so much more. Students
have just wrapped up their unit on descriptive writing and are now
beginning to write their own legends. Students will be working step
by step through the writing process to create legends that have bold
beginnings, mighty middles and excellent endings. In Science we
are currently experimenting with light and are retelling legends that
students have read through shadow puppet stories. In Social
Studies we have been talking about the people who have shaped
Saskatchewan and researching these people to find out why they are
important to Saskatchewan. As we move forward into December students will begin
learning some dance and music elements of Arts Education; in preparation for the
Christmas Concert. Thank you to everyone who has signed up for Seesaw so far the
students enjoy sharing their learning with all of you. If you still have not signed up and
you would like more information please feel free to contact me at the school.
Our school Christmas Concert is on Wednesday, December 20 at 7pm
Please join us for a fun filled evening of student performances, followed by dainties & visiting.
We will be accepting non-perishable food donations for the Shellbrook Food Bank.
Library News:
Thank you to everyone who supported our Book Fair again this year. It is a great oppor-
tunity to raise money for our library and to encourage reading with our students.
Our new books will arrive sometime in December!
Wishing you all the best this holiday season! Eat, Read & Be Merry
Reminder: Students should dress warm enough to be outside before
school, at recess and lunch. Please come to school with your
winter clothing: mitts, toque, winter coat, and snow pants.
Miss Bompais’ Math Corner
Kindergarten - In Kindergarten this month, we have been practicing tracing our
numbers and recognizing numbers in written form. We have also been using a
buffalo drum to help us count forwards and backwards to 10. Counting during
our daily activities has been fun and helpful for us to remember the order of
counting, and that we count to find out how many of something we have or need.
We will continue to practice the outcomes in the number strand, as well as work
on sorting strategies throughout December!
Grade 1/2 - The number strand continues to be our focus in grade 1/2 and we
have been playing different games to help us. We have been counting to 100 in a
variety of ways, and will begin to learn to skip count backwards. We have been
working on representing numbers, more than and less than, and addition
strategies. The grade twos are beginning to learn strategies to use with addition of
two digit numbers, with and without regrouping. Please continue to practice skip
counting at home with your children.
Grade 3/4 - I am excited to be teaching the grade three students math now as of
this last month! We have been working on multiplication strategies in both grades.
The grade three students have been focusing on multiplication to 5 x 5 and the
grade four students have been working on multiplication strategies for up to 11 x
11. We will continue to practice multiplication as it is so important, and a
necessary skill to have going forward. Next up on our agenda is working with
division and how it relates to multiplication.
Grade 6 - Grade six students have been working on outcomes within the shape
and space strand. They have been learning about the different types of angles
(right, acute, obtuse) and ways to measure angles. Throughout December we are
hoping to begin working on Blended Math, which will bring the focus back to the
number strand.
Grade 7/8 - The students in grade 7 and 8 have also been
working on outcomes within the shape and space strand, and
the grade 8s working on probability and statistics as well.
Throughout December, we are hoping to begin working on
Blended Math, which will bring the focus back to the number
strand, and students can work on outcomes that they need to
personally focus on and work at their own pace.

Grade Seven/Eight: Mr. Mackie
The Grade 7/8 class has had a busy November. Wild Rose held a Remembrance Day
ceremony early in the month and students worked hard on Remembrance Day
poems, essays, and posters. Of those assignments, the grade 7/8 class won two
awards from the Shellbrook Legion. We have also had the opportunity to dust off the
snowshoes and get outside a few times in P.E. and we have started practicing our
basketball skills. Gearing up for Christmas the class is holding a Secret Santa once a
week until the break, as well as beginning to work on their Christmas Concert
performance.
SLC NEWS
The SLC is hosting a food drive of non-
perishable food items for the Shellbrook Food
Bank. These food items get put together in
hampers, and given to families in need for the
Christmas holiday. This year we are having a
classroom competition. Students can bring in
items, the items will be weighed and the total
will be divided by the number of students per
classroom to come to a weight per student.
The food drive will run from Dec. 4 – Dec. 15.
The winning classroom will receive floats or ice cream.
The Royal Canadian Legion hosts a Remembrance
Day contest every year, in which Grade 1 to Grade 12
students, throughout Canada can enter. The different
categories for competitions are Black and White
Poster, Coloured Poster, Essay and Poems. Each year
Wild Rose Public School students enter their work
into the competition through the Shellbrook Legion
Branch 111. The Shellbrook Legion Branch 111 members judge the art and literacy
entries, which come from Wild Rose Public School, Shellbrook Elementary School and
W.P. Sandin School.
There were two winners from Wild Rose Public School:
Haven Sittler – won 2nd
place with her Junior Black and White Poster;
Hollen Bates – won 1st
place with
her Intermediate poem as well as
2nd
place with her Intermediate
Colour poster.
Hollen’s first place poem will
continue on to province wide
competitions.
Congratulations to both girls!
