On Thursdays there is a Science club inroom 119 for KS3 students who would liketo come and do activities or experimentsthat they would not normally get to do ina lesson.

On this occasion, our lead technician Mr.Cook, helped students create intriguinglooking “crystal gardens”. It’s an “oldschool” experiment that can cover a lotof very useful practical skills. First, studentshave to set up heatproof mat, tripod, gauze and Bunsen burner with a recap onhow to safely light and use the burners.

Working in groups, the students picked ajar and depending on the size, theyneeded to discuss ratio’s and correctlymeasure the water and sodium silicate“water glass” using measuring cylinders.

The water needed to be hot so they hadto start heating the water in abeaker. Once it was warm enough, one

student from each group added theSodium Silicate and stirred the solutioncarefully with a glass rod to make sure itwas mixed properly without knocking thehot beaker over.

The next task was very difficult assomeone in each group had to wear heatmitts and slowly pour the warm solutioninto their jar. Everyone doing this did abrilliant job and no solution was spilt andno beakers slipped through the heatmitts!!

Once the solution was allowed to settle, the students then dropped differenttransition metals, such as metal sulphate, chloride or nitrate crystals into thesolution. Each chemical crystal they usedproduces a different colour and once itsunk to the bottom of the jar, somethingreally fascinating started to happen…theystarted to grow in a trail-like fashion!

SCIENCE AT BDA

(Continued overleaf)

Reacting with the sodium silicatesolution each metal salt crystal forms aprecipitate, forming an insoluble metalsilicate. For example a crystal of Cobalt(II) Chloride reacts and forms a precipitateof Cobalt (II) silicate.

As the solution is still warm it speeds thisreaction up so that the students canwatch it grow in front of them. Just like aStalagmite they grow upwards to formwonderful structures, some looking just liketrees. By using different metal salts you

can create different coloured structures, making a multi coloured gardens.

It’s a very fragile garden though so the jarsneed to be handled with care.

You can see the students did a great jobwith their gardens and really enjoyedwatching them grow right in front ofthem!!

SCIENCE CLUB: WHAT’S COOKING IN THE LABS?

The latest event in this year’s housecompetition took place on Tuesday. Thesix houses battled it out in an epic war ofthe minds called University Challenge.Staff and students raced to press thebuzzer first and answer some devilishlydifficult questions asked by our very ownJeremy Paxman, Mr Preston.

A highlight of the first round was anincredibly closely fought bout between MrFalana’s Colossians and the Ms Noble-captained Corinthian team, which sawCorinthians clinch victory in the finalmoments.

The semi-finals were similarly tight withTeam Romans sneaking past Corinthiansinto the final and Galatians just beatingPhilippians in the closest of battles.

The final saw Romans take on Galatiansand it went to the final starter question.Romans were fastest to the buzzer andwon in emphatic fashion. Well doneRomans with amazing answers by Ikram,Dyon, Amani and their captain, Ms Ingr.

Next up…Hampers!
