REFLECTIONS ON THE NEW TESTAMENTREFLECTIONS ON THE NEW TESTAMENTREFLECTIONS ON THE NEW TESTAMENTREFLECTIONS ON THE NEW TESTAMENTREFLECTIONS ON THE NEW TESTAMENTThe interesting point to note from the Old Testament times, God

destroyed both sin and the sinner together, unlike in New Testament times,God incarnated Himself to seek and to save the lost, and destroy only sin,but not the sinner.

There came a time, when God inspired His prophets to announcethe birth of the Saviour of the world, indicating the beginning of the fulfilmentof the prophecy about the birth of His Son and the ripening position tocrush the head of the serpent (Satan) Genesis 3:15.

The following prominent prophecies about the birth of Jesus arevery much relevant to the context. “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, andbear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14) In his prophecy,Isaiah gave an indication that a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, not theone who is married to a man or the one who knew a man, but a virgin. Thisprophecy of Isaiah is in conformity with the prophecy of God, whoprophesied, saying, “He, and not she, shall bruise thy head.” It is indeed asupernatural and incredible phenomenon for a virgin to conceive. Theprophecy is as follows, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given:and the Government shall be upon his shoulder: and His name shall becalled Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father,The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among thethousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall come forth unto Me that is to beruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting”.(Micah 5:2) God chose Bethlehem, also known as Bethlehem Ephrathah, asthe place of birth of the promised Saviour of the world. The prophecies ofIsaiah and Micah have made clear every aspect of the Birth of the promisedSeed of the Woman, who would bruise the head of the serpent.

“And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decreefrom Caesar Augustus, (the Roman Emperor, who ruled from 27 BC to 14A.D for the enumeration of census of all citizens within the bounds of RomanEmpire). “And Joseph and Mary also went up from Galilee, out of the cityof Nazareth unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem”. The Biblesays, “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him inswaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no roomfor them in the inn”. (Luke 2:7) The shepherds have made known in thetown, how the angels told them about the birth of Jesus. The shepherdswent back glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and weretold.

The reflections do not confine to the Old Testament times only, because God is still seeking for the lost sinners. He is standing and knockingat the door of your heart, the right place for Jesus to dwell in. Now is thetime in this season to hear His voice and open the door of your heart for thesaviour to come in, then only you will be with Him in Heaven forever.

May the Lord’s richest blessings be showered upon you and yourfamily this season.

“I WILL MAKE YOU FISHERS OF MEN”Matt 4:19

It is very interesting to see the process which Jesus uses tocall an individual out of a crowd and how he transforms him as Hisdisciple. We see how He indicates in him the qualities of a servant-leader and thus merges him into His Apostolic Band.

Simon Peter lived in the small town of Bethsaida. Peterand his brother Andrew were Partners in a flourishing fishingbusiness. As an ardent Patriot, Peter would welcome the advent ofthis new Prophet who might well be the herald of a new era for hisnation. The Powerful Preacher, John the Baptist, had obviouslydeeply impacted the lives of the fishermen. His insistent call torepentance had prepared his heart for his introduction to Jesus. Heeagerly responded to his invitation to meet the one who was torevolutionize his life.

Let us emphasis the word ‘call’, of Peter and Andrew, which call seems strange to our modern ears. The two fishermenwere following their ordinary vocation, when Jesus came walkingalong the shore of the ‘Sea of Galilee’. Jesus said to them, “Come yeafter me, and I will make you to become fishers of men”. (Mark 1:17).Straight away Peter and Andrew forsook their nets and followedHim. We Praise God for their response to immediately follow Jesus.Peter’s quick decision was marked by trait, but despite all hisqualities of leadership, Peter was volatile and unstable. It was Christ’intention to correct this total fatal flaw while he was training Peter.Jesus told him that “ thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will buildmy church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. (Matt16:18). But this making is an act of our Lord that remains all togethera new creation. Jesus touching and calling is a meticulous way ofanointing him to be His vessel.

Peter was the disciple, who replied at the time the discipleswere deserting Jesus: Jesus challenged His twelve disciples. “Willye also go away?” Peter looked at Him and said, “we believe andare sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.” (John6:67-69). After that, Peter was the spokesperson for the one hundredand twenty people on the day of Pentecost, the national leader ofthe Apostolic band and was the leading disciple of Jesus Christ: Itwas he who made The Preposterous Suggestion on The Mount ofTransfiguration (Matt 17:4).

The Pebble would become the Granite Rock-notautomatically and inevitably, but only by accepting the gruelingdiscipline and suffering allowed by The Lord in his life. Peter triedhence forth to live up to his Master’s expectations and impliedpromise but in his own unaided strength. It is remarkable that inthis one sentence the master foretold Peter’s temptation and fall, hisrepentance and restoration, and even his future ministry.

May the Lord’s richest blessings upon you as you followJesus as your Master and Lord.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever been in a situationwhere you were faced a lifealtering decision? I’m talking aboutthe kind of decisions where theimplications for you and thepeople in your life are verysignificant. In America, we have anexpression where we say that aperson has come to a crossroad. They’ve come to a place wherethey have to make a choicebetween two or more options.Choosing one way might havesome good things about it andmaybe a few things that make youfearful. Choosing something elsemight also have some good thingsand some negative things. You andI can cannot see the future. Wedon’t know the long range outcome

or the unseen implications of thedecisions we make today.Sometimes, our decisions simplyrequire faith.

There’s an account In the OldTestament where the Nation ofIsrael came to a point of decision. In the book of Exodus, Godpowerfully and miraculously, brought Israel out of bondage inEgypt. The Hebrew people hadbeen slaves in the land of Egypt. They lived under cruel and harshoppression. God delivered themfrom that bondage. He led themsafely through the Red Sea. He ledthem through the desert and towarda piece of land He promised them.Along the way, God gave them HisLaw so that they would know whoto live well as his special, chosen

people. He also gave them theplans to build a Tabernacle so thatHis presence would dwell amountHis people.

Eventually, God brought them topoint where the next segment oftheir journey would take them intothe promised Land. They were freefrom the tyranny and oppression ofthe Pharaoh. They had theopportunity to live under the directand loving rule of God. They couldfinally be in the place that Godpromised to Abraham and hisdescendants. But Israel had adecision to make. But before theyentered, they are confronted witha decision that required faith. Weare going to consider the decisionthat Israel faced and the faith thatit would take to trust God.

WHEN FAITH FAILS, WE STARTLOOKING AT OUR OWNSTRENGTH INSTEAD OF GOD'S

The first principle for us toconsider is that when faith fails,we start looking at our strengthinstead of God’s. (Numbers 13:1-2,26-33)

Over 400 years prior to theaccount we’re about to read, Godappeared to Abraham. The Lordsaid to Abraham that from him, anew nation would emerge. Godpromised that they would be Hisspecial people. God promised thatthey would live under His lovingrule. God promised that they wouldhave a special land that He wouldgive them as a home. God’s planhas always been to have God’speople, in God’s place, underGod’s rule.

Now, centuries later, the Lord wasnow ready to move this people intothe land, Unfortunately, someobstacles arose. Receiving the landrequired trust in God.

Numbers 13:1 The Lord spoke toMoses, saying, 2 “Send men tospy out the land of Canaan, whichI am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathersyou shall send a man, every onea chief among them.”

A group of spies go in to check outthe land. This was God’s idea.

Before going into the land, onerepresentative from each of the 12tribes of Israel went in to have alook around. It is significant thatGod wanted one of the chief menfrom each tribe that God sent onthis mission. It wasn’t any man thatcould do this. It wasn’t 12volunteers. It was 12 chiefs orleaders. God wanted leaders to dothis job because these men wouldinfluence what Israel was about todo. They would form an objectiveopinion about the land, but, theywould also know that Godpromised to deliver the land intotheir hand.

As these leaders reported back, what was supposed to happen wasthat their faith would influencethe faith of the nation, and thepeople would go forward andfollow them. Spiritual leaders aresupposed to lead people towardfaith in God. Most of these leadersfailed. At the end of their journeythrough the land, they came backto give a report.

Numbers 13: 26 And they came toMoses and Aaron and to all thecongregation of the people ofIsrael in the wilderness of Paran,at Kadesh. They brought backword to them and to all thecongregation, and showed themthe fruit of the land. 27 And theytold him, “We came to the land to

which you sent us. It flows withmilk and honey, and this is itsfruit. 28 However, the people whodwell in the land are strong, andthe cities are fortified and verylarge. And besides, we saw thedescendants of Anak there. 29 TheAmalekites dwell in the land of theNegeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hillcountry. And the Canaanitesdwell by the sea, and along theJordan.” 30 But Caleb quieted thepeople before Moses and said,“Let us go up at once and occupyit, for we are well able toovercome it.” 31 Then the menwho had gone up with him said,“We are not able to go up againstthe people, for they are strongerthan we are.” 32 So they broughtto the people of Israel a badreport of the land that they hadspied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone tospy it out, is a land that devoursits inhabitants, and all the peoplethat we saw in it are of greatheight. 33 And there we saw theNephilim (the sons of Anak, whocome from the Nephilim), and weseemed to ourselves likegrasshoppers, and so we seemedto them.”

The 12 leaders came back and toldthe people that the land was betterthen they could possibly imagine.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. -2 Timothy 1:7

There were natural resources in thisland like nothing they had seenbefore. Every member of thenation of Israel had been born aslave in Egypt. The abundance gothe Promised Land was surelyoverwhelming. It would have beenlike a person living in perpetualpoverty suddenly living in abeautiful home with abundant food.It was exactly the type of land thatGod had promised them.

But as the Israelites often did, theyfaltered in their faith. No soonerhad they described the wonders ofthe land; they went on describedwhy it was impossible to possess. The word that changes everythingis in verse 28 - “however.” Withone word, the report shifted fromthe goodness of God’s promise tothe impossibility of God keepingthat promise. They began to focuson words like large, strong, andfortified. When their faith in Godfaltered, they saw an unconquerableforce before them. They took theireyes off God’s promise and put iton their enemies. By the end of thereport, they weren’t focusing onthe beauty of the land but on theperceived advantage and size of itsinhabitants.

Israel was the people ofpromise.God had already savedthem time and time again as theytraveled from Egypt, through the

desert, to this place. God chosethem, and chose this land for them.As they weighed in the balance -the faithfulness of God VS the sizeof the enemy - God lost, and theyfelt like “grasshoppers.”

The perception of themselves asgrasshoppers was nowhere close tohow God viewed them. To God,these were his chosen people - Hischildren. He delivered fromslavery and crushed the army thatheld them captive. Israel made twofundamental errors. They had noconfidence that God would keepHis promise to give them this land. And they completely lost site oftheir place in God’s story ofredemption.

There’s a lesson here for us.Because of Christ, we arereconciled to God. We are not lostoutsiders. We are the sons anddaughters of God. When we facethings that are difficult or fearful,we can’t lose sight of who were inChrist.

As a result of this recognizancemission, Caleb and Joshua areready to trust God and forge ahead. The ten other leaders are convincedit can’t be done. At the end of theday, Israel listened to the teninstead of the two. Their faith inGod failed. It failed becauseinstead of looking to what God

promised and what God canaccomplish, they looked to theirown strength. They comparedthemselves to the people of theland. The people in the land werebigger and stronger. Theydetermined that they could not havevictory. They thought that enteringthe land was something theyneeded to accomplish instead ofremembering that God has alreadypromised it to them.

When we face a situation thatrequires faith, it’s easy to focus onour own strength and abilitiesinstead of on God’s faithfulness. We start looking to ourselves andto what wecan accomplish. Whenwe look to ourselves and to ourstrength, we make decisions basedon probabilities and likelyoutcomes, no matter what Godmight have to say about the matter.

Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away. - Isaiah 41:9

Why Did Jesus Perform Miracles?

“But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible;but with God all things are possible.” - Matthew 19:26

Familiarity has dulled our amazement. We knowabout the water becoming wine, Christ striding onthe waves, the blind soaking in new light, the windobeying, and even Lazarus living again. Comparedto the reaction of those who saw Jesus’s miraclesfirsthand, our response is much more tepid. Somepeople back then followed, some snarled, somecondemned, but none ignored.

To get at the reason why Jesus performed Hismiracles, we need to unearth the expectations ofthose who lived at that time. From our perspective,we know who Jesus claimed to be—the Messiahand God in sandals. But the people of ancientIsrael had no New Testament to study. They hadthe Old Testament, the teachings of the respectedrabbis, and hope.

Jesus strode into the midst of their hope—hopeto be free of oppression from distant Rome—witha bold claim. The prophecies were fulfilled in Him.The Messiah had come to draw people to theKingdom of God. While He had no sword thatthey could see, they could see Him healing theirfriends and relatives. They could see the powerof God moving through the hills. They’d read aboutthe great miracles of Moses and Joshua, Danieland Elijah, but seeing them was another matter.

The miracles themselves were not ways for Jesusto show off His power, especially since He hadgiven up His former glory to come to earth and dothe will of the Father in heaven. Instead, themiracles vindicated His claims about Himself andHis teaching. Although He didn’t need to performany miracles and refused to perform them ondemand, they came so that others might believe(John 10:37-38).

With all the healings and weather control, however,it’s easy to forget the greatest miracle Jesusperformed. Being dead and in the grave, Jesustook His life back and delivered a confirmation ofHis Kingship that no one could ignore.

“The Orphaned Book” – Walt Kaiser

I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face:in their affliction they will seek me early. - Hosea 5:15

Has Lamentations taught us anything about how to relateto those going through times of suffering? YESExamples:1) Don’t ignore the pain (Ch. 1–5, esp. 2:11–13)2) Rightly identify the cause (1:8, 14, 18)

a. It is because of sini. Theirs? (1:8, 14, 18; 3:42)ii. Someone else’s? (2:14; 4:13–16)

3) Remember that God is present (Ch. 2)4) Remember that God is gracious (3:31–33)5) Remember that God is faithful (3:21–23)6) Remember that God is compassionate (3:22, 32)7) Remember that God’s character gives us hope

(3:24)8) Remember that God is in control (2:1–2, 8, 17; 4:11–

12)9) Remember their place in the plan of God (2:17;

3:64–66; 4:21–22)10) Call for a return to God (3:40–42)I. ABSTRACT

♦ The lesson… Sin has consequences God is Sovereign Salvation is coming

II. INTRODUCTION· Lamentations 4 finds us coming back out from thegeographic, theological, and thematic center of book.

Chapter 4 cannot be understood apart fromchapter 3

Chapter 3 said that that is hope to be foundBECAUSE OF the faithful character ofGod.

Chapter 4 follows this by saying, “But still, sin has consequences.” It will end withhope, but there is once again the shockingreality of the exile.

· Lesson: Sin has consequences God is Sovereign Salvation is coming

III. CONTENTVs. 1–2: My How the Mighty Have Fallen· Vs. 1

This chapter once again starts with eka, “Alas,”or “How”

Much confusion about what he is talking aboutin the first line (ie. “gold”)

Gold of the temple (from Vulgate whichsays that the stones are from the sanctuaryand then into the KJV)

The splendor of Zion (cf. 2:1) The moral fortitude of Zion

Zion’s young men (see vs. 2) Conclusion: The splendor and glory of Zion is nowgreatly minimized.

It is like gold changing or like holy stonesbecoming common enough to cast into thestreets.

This truth is illustrated through the drasticreversals that are taking place all over the

But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. - 1 Corinthians 15:57

city. No one is immune to the impact ofthe exile.

• Vs. 2 This verse is clearly about the precious men of Zion, who are now clay jars compared to goldVs. 3–10: The Depths of Devastation• Vs. 3- The devastation of the exile has impacted allinvolved.

The Men (vs. 2) have been brought low The Women (vs. 3) have become hateful

toward their own children• Vs. 4 Children are suffering• Vs. 5 The rich are impacted, just like the poor• Vs. 6 Two possible translations:

Their “sin” was greater, or The “punishment for their sin” was greater

I believe that the first one is intended (with the NASB,not the ESV)

Why? Well, it was merciful for God to not totally

destroy Israel See 5:21–22

Israel was not guilty of the same form of sinthough

Sodom and Gomorrah at least didn’t have tosuffer very long.• Vs. 7–8

The beautiful are impacted just like the restof the nation

“white” refers to their clothes, not their skin “bone” refers to their bodies “polish” refers to their appearance• Vs. 9–10 Graphic picture to show why it is better to be killedwith the sword or in a flash of light (like Sodom andGomorrah)It would have been better to die than to even be forcedto see this.Vs. 11–12: The Lord Was Behind This (even the nationsknow that this event was unlikely)

• How can these kinds of things happen? Where isGod in all this?• This verse answers those question. God has caused all of this. He has accomplishedwhat he purposed to do (see esp. 2:17) What is more, the surrounding nations neverthought that this kind of thing could ever happen. Lasttime Jerusalem almost fell, the angel of God killed185,000 Assyrians in the night (2 Kings 19:35).

With a God like this, how can Jerusalemever fall unless God is behind it?

• This verse repeats many ideas from chapter 2 “wrath” (2:4) “pour out” (2:4) “anger” (2:1, 3, 6) “fire” (2:3–4) “consume” (2:3)Vs. 13–16: Rejected by God• This is a very interesting section• Vs. 13–14 The poet offers an indictment of the priests and the

prophets. Prophets

Jer. 5:31 Mentioned in 2:14, where they arecriticized for not exposing the sins of thenation

These are the peace prophets Priests

Mentioned in 2:20, but only that theysuffered alongside the prophets

Here their role in the decline of Israel isexplored

“Because of…”: The priests and prophets could have

prevented this catastrophe They could have exposed the sins of the

people They could have refrained from giving the

people a false hope They could have kept the temple worship

pure “who have shed…”:

Sin of omission

Stephen D. CampbellThere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,

who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. - Roman 8:1

• They are here held responsible for the fall ofJerusalem which is a result of the things which they didnot do.

Sin of commission• They were united in their oppression of those who

spoke truth• Jer 26:11Then the priests and the prophets spoke to the officialsand to all the people, saying, “A death sentence for thisman! For he has prophesied against this city as youhave heard in your hearing.” “They wandered, blind,…”

Blindness is also quite often a referenceto spiritual blindnessThis could also be a reference to real blindness (Deut.28:28), but because of the spiritual depravity of theleaders of Israel and this being the context, it seems bestto consider this as being spiritual blindness.

Deut. 29:2–4And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You haveseen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land ofEgypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land; thegreat trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs andwonders. “Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a heartto know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.

Isa. 29:10For the LORD has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep,He has shut your eyes, the prophets; And He has covered your heads, the seers.

Isa. 56:10His watchmen are blind,All of them know nothing. All of them are mute dogs unable to bark,Dreamers lying down, who love to slumber;o “They were defiled…”:

Because there is innocent, righteous bloodon these men’s hand’s God does not even hear their prayers.

Isa. 1:15“So when you spread out your hands in prayer,I will hide My eyes from you;Yes, even though you multiply prayers,I will not listen.Your hands are covered with blood.• NOTICE: Lamentations has called to God to See andHear.

o God does see and hear, but the issue is their sin.o They must repent and return to Godo What is at issue here is that God is not looking on withcompassionVs. 15–16• Vs. 15o This defilement resulted in them being untouchable

NASB• “Depart! Unclean!” they cried of themselves.“Depart, depart, do not touch!”

o This seems to imply that the prophets and priests wererepentant and knew their sin.

Problem: It seems to be based almostexclusively from the similarity to Lev. 13:45which commands Lepers to cry out “Unclean, unclean.”

ESV “Away! Unclean!” people cried at them.

“Away! Away! Do not touch!”

o This translation is better representation of the Hebrew.o It also changes the meaning.

Instead of the priests calling out aboutthemselves the people are calling this out asthe priests and prophets walk down the streets.

The people seem to finally recognize theemptiness of their spiritual leadership

o Everywhere these men go, they are chased away. They are unwelcome everywhere they go.

“For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.” - Acts 13:47

Down through the ages BrownUniversity has seen a host of theirgraduates leave an indelible mark onthe people they come into contactwith. Posterity will view many ofthese Brown graduates as men andwomen of renown, who will take theirplace in the annals of time asextraordinary visionaries and giftedleaders of the human race. Thesegraduates have demonstrated anuncompromising determination fordramatically changing the worldaround them with the correspondingidealism, vision, and passionnecessary to set them apart frommost students and institutions ofhigher education and learning.Politicians, scholars, clergy, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, executives, and others havededicated their lives to making adifference for those who follow. Thebackgrounds from which thesegraduates come from contain anoverwhelming diversity of race, creed, color, thought, and liberty ofconscience. It is within this sacredtradition of diversity at Brown that wepeer into the world of fundamentalChristianity and view the divineencounter and interconnectednessof two Brown graduates who arecenturies removed from oneanother, but with a similar dream. The concern and desire of both ofthese graduates was to be yieldedand willing instruments to help scoreChrist’s nature on mankind and toleave their Christian marker oneveryone they touch. Yes, the hope

and prayer of these Brown graduateswas/is that everyone they come intocontact with will repent and askChrist to be their personal Lord andSavior. Today we want to focus on aBrown graduate and a man ofunparalleled genius with enoughambition and spiritual insight toimpact people all around the world forthe cause of Christ, named AdoniramJudson. This graduate continues tocast a radiant beam of light (Christ)for others to follow. This is a story ofhow God has recently used AdoniramJudson in my life, all of these decadesand centuries later.

Leadership Lesson #1 – There isno lasting wisdom outside of theauthority of the scriptures. Man’sconjectures, opinions, musings, andtheoretical analysis of the “why” ofhuman existence is meaninglessoutside of the grace of God and Hiscreative blueprint.

“For our rejoicing is this, thetestimony of our conscience, that insimplicity and godly sincerity, not infleshly wisdom, but by the grace ofGod, we have had our conversationin the world, and more abundantly toyou-ward.” (2 Corinthians 1:12)

Adoniram Judson was arguably oneof the most gifted Americanmissionaries ever to step foot onforeign lands. He was a child prodigy, who at age three was reading entirechapters of the Bible. His dotingfather was a well-known andrespected clergyman; received his

formal theological education andtraining from Yale; filled severalCongregational pulpits around NewEngland during Adoniram’supbringing; all the while making surethat his son knew the extraordinarilyhigh expectations that were beingplaced on him in the spiritual realmand someone that God could greatlyuse in the future. His godly mothercontributed faithfully andenergetically to the oversight of thequality of his education in his earlychildhood years. She was ahomemaker, school administrator, thoughtful intellect, and disciplinarianwho oversaw his rigorous studies tomake sure he was living up to all ofthose high ministry expectations andbeyond. Using his mother’s earlyhome school educational training asa springboard, he soon flourishedunder the tutelage of otherinstitutions of higher education, which included both the MasterDodge School and a school ofnavigation headed up by CaptainMorton. In his early teens, Adonirambegin to study and master multiplelanguages to the delight of his father(Adoniram Sr.) and his mother(Abigail), while showing anunparalleled aptitude for problemsolving and mathematical theory. Hehad the perfect home environmentfrom which to grow and prosper inhis spiritual leadership application.

“ Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.” - Psalms 96:3

1 Paul and Timothy, servants ofChrist Jesus, To all the saints inChrist Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:2 Grace to you and peace fromGod our Father and the LordJesus Christ.During my first pastorate in theSouthern California desert, thecongregation launched a buildingprogram that relied primarily onvolunteer help. There were parts ofthe facility that required trainedprofessionals to ensure that the jobwas done properly and would befit for an evaluation by the localbuilding inspector. Yet, most of themanual labor of hammering, drilling, digging, cement pouring, and painting was done by churchmembers.I joined in with this work andenjoyed it thoroughly even if I wasnot particularly skilled at it. The jobwas not without its dangers. Whenwe dug a hole for a septic tank, Iassisted a church leader insquaring off the bottom corners. Iclimbed down a ladder and did mywork in the hole and then called tobe lifted out. He lowered the clawfrom his backhoe and I jumpedonto it while he carefully lifted meout. This was a mistake. Theoperator assumed I would balancemyself and he put the machine intogear, As it lurched upward, I lostmy balance and toppled overbackwards landing in the bottomof the hole on my head. The church leader quickly cut themotor of the backhoe andscrambled down the ladder tocheck to see that I was okay.Assured that I was fine, we both

climbed out and posted a yellowwarning tape around the hole toalert anyone nearby of this hazard.Needless to say, everyone in thechurch heard about the pastorfalling into the septic tank hole. When I arrived at the building thefollowing Sunday, a father stoodwith his son on the edge of the holein the front of the church facility andwarned his youngster againstcoming too close. He gave thisterse exhortation to his son, “Youdon’t want to be like Pastor Jimand fall in, do you?” So much forsetting a positive example!I may not know a lot about how toconstruct a church facility, but I doknow how God desires believersto conduct themselves in buildinga healthy church. The book of Philippians providesinstruction on how to build ahealthy church ministry. God’s HolySpirit indwells all the believers ineach local body and nurtures unityand ministry capacity. Yet, man’ssinfulness prevents eachcongregation from consistentlyoperating under the Spirit’s controlresulting in compromise orconflict. Healthy churches walkunder the influence of God’s Spiritwithout allowing sin to clog upprogress. The study in Philippians is anexamination of how one churchworked at becoming and retaininga healthy status. It was not withoutits problems or potential disasters.Yet, this church was a positiveexample of God workingeffectively in the lives of those whogathered there in the name ofChrist. Let us walk through this

brief four chapter epistle and notethe Apostle Paul’s commendationsand exhortations to them. Thisepistle does not offer us insightsinto church structure or methodsfor growth. Rather, the focus is onbuilding and maintaining strongrelationships within a church. Thisis a characteristic of a healthybody of believers.Anyone who has ever visited achurch for the first time typicallyenters a buildingwith little or no knowledge of thepeople comprising thecongregation or their history offormation. Before we walk into thePhilippian church as visitors, weshould likewise receive someorientation as to their history. Toadequately understand thestruggle and victory of planting thisnew church in Philippi, we mustfollow the trail that led there.God often does a wonderful workin a local church’s life afterdeliberately molding the peopleHe selects to do a work for theadvancement of His Son’skingdom. We will follow Paul’sjourney towards Philippi. It willprovide us with solid principles tokeep in mind when we desire tostart a new ministry or renew anexisting one.The book of Acts offers detailedaccounts in the history of thePhilippian church unlike any otherchurch that he writes to. We willstudy Acts 16 before moving on toPhilippians 1 and glean someguidelines on how to start aministry.

“Sing unto the Lord, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.” - 1 Chronicles 16:23

13. The DIRECT STATEMENT PrincipleGod says what He means, and means what He says. Therefore, do not spiritualise the Bible away.Take it literally as the context states. This will make uspremillennial, not amillennial.Question: How do we interpret figures of speech in theBible?Rule: Words should be understood literally, unless theliteral interpretation involves a contradiction or absurdity. For example, Hard heart, sins as scarlet (Isaiah 1:18),let the dead bury their dead (Matthew 8:22), destroy thistemple (John 2:19).Types of figures of speech:1. Metaphor: One thing is said to be another thing which

it resembles. It is figurative use of terms withoutindicating their figurative nature. (The word “is” in thiscontext means “represents”).“All flesh is grass.” (Isaiah 40:6).“We are…the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3).“The Lord is my rock, and my fortress.” (Psalm 18:2).“This is my body…this is my blood.” (Matt 26:26-28).“I am the bread of life.” (John 6:35).

2. Simile: One thing is “like” or “as” another thing.“All we like sheep.” (Isaiah 53:6).“All flesh is as grass.” (1 Peter 1:24).“The kingdom of heaven is like…”(Matthew13:24,31,33,44,45,47).“I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his houseupon a rock.” (Matthew 7:24-27).

“As the rain cometh down, so shall my word be.”(Isaiah 55:10,11).“Is not my word like as a fire, and like a hammer.”(Jeremiah 23:29).

3. Hyperbole: Overstatement or exaggeration used toemphasise or magnify an object beyond reality.“Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes afountain of tears.” (Jeremiah 9:1).“Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea.”(Genesis 41:49).“The cities are great and walled up to heaven.”(Deuteronomy 1:28).“The Midianites and Amalekites…lay likegrasshoppers.” (Judges 7:12).“Saul and Jonathan…were swifter than eagles, theywere stronger than lions.” (2 Samuel 1:23).“But I am a worm.” (Psalm 22:6).“If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out…If thy righthand offend thee, cut it off.” (Matthew 5:29,30).

4. Personification. An inanimate object is givenattributes of life.“The earth opened her mouth.” (Numbers 16:32).

5. Parable. An earthly story with a heavenly meaning.(Matthew 13).

14. The TYPICAL Principle.A type is a divinely appointed illustration of someScriptural truth.A type must typify something future.- A person: Adam, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Jonah.

- An event: deliverance from bondage.

16. The THREE-FOLD Principle. God sets forth manytruths in a three-fold way.1. Three immediate benefits of salvation: “Hath
