The retreat is put on by a company known as Youth Frontiers out of Minnesota. They have been promoting a positive school culture since 1987. The focus is on “encouraging students to follow their hearts instead of the crowd, use moral courage and make responsible decisions despite their fears.” As a principal, I have been involved with Courage Retreats for six years. I have seen first hand the impact the retreat has on the social, emotional and academic environment of a school. As a result, I know we are in for a fan- tastic experience. By the time you read this, the event will have already happened and I hope your 7th grade student talked to you about it. While the event has already occurred, I know the impact just began. If you have one of those rare middle schoolers who do not tell you everything about their day, just ask them. Ask them if they committed to an act of courage. Why do we do this just for seventh grade? Typically, Courage retreats are designed for this age group. Many of our sixth grade students are a bit young for this type of day. After many years of organizing these event, YF has found this is the right target group. They do have a Kindness Retreat geared to fifth grade as well as a ninth grade version. How do we fund the event? Funding comes from sources such as our annu- al fundraiser that just ended on November 29th as well as grant money. This is money well spent as it focuses on the whole child. In prior years, I have seen students have the courage to stand up to bullying, the courage to make amends, the courage to change their image, and the courage to make better decisions in behavior and academics. Aside from the retreat, I do want you to be aware of our next school activity night. That will occur December 16 from 6pm-8pm. Perhaps you would be willing to chaperone one of our monthly activity nights? Please note, our winter break will begin on Friday December 23rd. Thus, our last day is the 22nd and we return on Tuesday, January 3rd. With the weather turning colder, please be sure to send your child in appro- priate winter attire. Way too many students are wearing just sweatshirts. We do have a Comet Care center if you need help with a winter coat for your son or daughter. Just call Steve gross at 233-6553 if you need help with a coat. I wish you and your family a happy holiday season! Hank Schmelz

Dear Families,

As I write this newsletter we are preparing for our 7th grade Courage Re-treat that will be held November 29th in our gymnasium. The retreat is put on by a company known as Youth Frontiers out of Minnesota. They have been promoting a positive school culture since 1987. The focus is on “encouraging students to follow their hearts instead of the crowd, use moral courage and make responsible decisions despite their fears.”

As a principal, I have been involved with Courage Retreats for six years. I have seen first hand the impact the retreat has on the social, emotional and academic environment of a school. As a result, I know we are in for a fan-tastic experience.

Aside from the retreat, I do want you to be aware of our next school activity night. That will occur December 16 from 6pm-8pm. Perhaps you would be willing to chaperone one of our monthly activity nights? Please note, our winter break will begin on Friday December 23rd. Consider the gift of music this holiday season!

Looking for holiday gift ideas? How about the gift of music? Whether your child plays an instrument, sings in choir or just enjoys listening to music, music-themed gifts are always

welcomed. Consider purchasing an instrument, sheet music or music books (from a music store or printed from a website), instrument accessories

or music for listening enjoyment.

Keep Learning Alive During The Winter Break

Winter break should be just that - a break from the normal routine. But your children should keep learning, just not as formally as they did at school. Here are ways your children can continue to learn over the break:

Write: Encourage them to start a journal and write in it every day. Letters can be written to friends and family that won’t be seen during the break. Thank-you notes can be written to anyone who gives a gift or extends kindness.

Read: Your children should read something every day for 20 minutes. If they already are reading something they are interested in - great. Otherwise, a magazine or newspaper article works, too. Take a trip to the library together to help find fun and interesting reading material.

Math: Ask them to help you add up the day’s expenditures or help you stick to your budget while shopping. They can also measure the ingredients you will need for baking. And most importantly they could calculate how much they should save each day to buy their favorite Associate Principal a really nice gift at the end of the school year!

Have a Great Winter Break! Mr. Fountain

Brain POWER!!!

Learning Skills Tips:

December

“Did you do your homework?”

Parents need to ask more questions than this one, teachers advise. How much should you help with home-work? Monitor homework but re-

member it’s your child’s homework, not yours. You can help by asking

questions that help guide your child to his own solutions.

Some examples:

What information do you need to do this assignment? Where are you going to look for it? Where do you think you should begin? What do you need to do next? Can you describe how you’re going to solve this problem? How did you solve this problem? What did you try that didn’t work? Why does this answer seem right to you? Tell me more about this part? http://www.greatschools.org/gk/articles/study-skills-for-middle-school-and-beyond/

Give them a break.

Just like adults, students can reduce stress by enjoying hobbies, time with friends, exercise, or music. Teachers and parents can give students a three

-minute vacation to reduce stress and anxiety. Any pleasurable activity used as a brief break can give the amygdala a chance to cool down and

the neurotransmitters time to rebuild. The amygdala is the integrative

center for emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation. https://www.psychologytoday.com/files/attachments/4141/the-neuroscience-joyful-education-judy-willis-md.pdf

Back to School Reading Tips: Installment 4 of 9

Each week, this section of the newsletter will provide you with tips to parents work on reading strategies at home with their children.

5. Surround your child with books.

According to Science News, research shows that the number of books in the home is a strong indicator for reading achievement and educational attainment. When children have access to books in their home, they become familiar with books and the act of reading, effectively giving them a head start in learning. A child who looks at books and reads with his or her parents/guardians everyday has a major advantage compared to children who never read at home and who have never been introduced to the concept of reading. Simply interacting with books on a regular basis makes a huge difference in a child’s development.

Phoenix Middle School Sports

We would love for your child to join one or more of the sports Phoenix offers! In order for your child to join, you will need to follow 5 steps:

Step 1: Your child needs a Physical Examination. If your child has had a physical since April 1, 2015 and we have a green athletic card on file filled out by you and your physician from last school year, then you will need to fill out a yellow alternate year participation card for this

school year. The yellow card does not need a doctor’s signature. If your child has not had a physical since April 1, 2015, then you will need to have a green athletic card filled out by you and your physician. If your child has had a physical since April 1, 2015, but we never received a green athletic card from you, then you will need to fill one out and simply ask your physician to sign the green card verifying the date of your child’s physical exam.

Step 2: Fill out the white emergency card (on a half sheet). This is usually attached to the green athletic card or yellow alternate year participation card.

Step 3: You and your child will need to read the concussion informational packet and sign the agreement form.

Step 4: You and your child will need to read and sign the Athletic Code.

Step 5: Remind your child show up for the first day of practice!!

Hank Schmelz

Mantener Vivo El Aprendizaje Durante Las Vacaciones De Invierno

Algunos ejemplos:

Que información necesita para hacer la tarea? ¿Dónde vas a buscarlo?

¿Dónde crees que debería empezar?

¿Qué necesita hacer a continuación?
