FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Aloha Alki Elementary Community,

The Hawaiians have a word for the act of a community coming together to help others without personal gain, the word is kokua. I’ve seen this word lived in the lives of those in our Alki community. From helping in our school auction to checking on a family in need, from sharing your voice at Principal coffee talks to making copies for a teacher, the Alki community never fails to help one another in any way they can. Whether you have offered your time, your money, your voice, or your kind smile, I would like to give thanks to you for all you do. You make Alki a very special place to be.

A special thank you to all of our incredible PTA Auction team and all of our donors! All your hard work and dedication has resulted in far exceeding our expectations for funds raised to support our social-emotional focus for the year. In January, you will see social-emotional learning curriculum, books, and sensory tools in every classroom that support “whole-child” learning. In addition, you will also notice a newly implemented recess support program, Playworks, which will work with our staff to improve the experience for all students on the playground. Please help me to give appreciation to our Alki staff during this busy time of year. Last week, a second grader was in the hallway coming in from feeling sad from recess and when I asked him, “what happened?” He sighed and said,

“you are like the tenth teacher to ask me that.” I smiled and said, “Isn’t this school amazing, everyone cares about you!” No matter how busy our staff get, they never stop going above and beyond for each and every student. It is the Alki Way!

Though far away from the islands, the spirit of kokua is alive and well in our Alki community.

With deepest love and gratitude,

Principal Deese

Research shows that students with higher emotional intelligence are better prepared to manage their lives so that they can focus, learn, and do their best in school. Our school has adopted RULER, a research based program to develop the skills of emotional intelligence in all educators, staff, students and their families.

Why do Emotions Matter? • Emotions influence teaching and learning • Emotions influence decision making • Emotions influence physical and mental health (well-being) • Emotions influence the quality of our relationships

Emotion influence creativity Everyone needs skills to build empathy, healthy relationships and flourish – as human beings and as a society. In this age of social media, we’re at risk of losing these skills. RULER was designed to promote student growth and well-being by enhancing the social and emotional skills of students, and the adults involved in their education.

Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions. They form the acronym RULER, which is the name of the approach our school has adopted to teach everyone in our community — the children and the adults — these skills.

If you want to be more detailed about RULER: • Recognizing – Identifying emotion in oneself and others by

interpreting facial expressions, body language, vocal tones and physiological reactions.

• Understanding – Knowing the causes and consequences of emotions, including the influence of different emotions on thinking, learning, decisions, and behavior

• Labeling – Using a wide range of emotion words, developing a rich feeling word vocabulary.

• Expressing – Knowing how and when to express emotions with different people and in multiple contexts (nonverbal, written, and spoken)

• Regulating – Developing strategies that help us manage our emotions to support healthy relationships and achieve goals.

What are the positive outcomes of RULER? • Improved academic performance (11-12% increase in

standardized test scores) • Reduced aggression (handling unpleasant feelings in socially

acceptable ways) • Reduced anxiety • More supportive, productive, and compassionate classrooms

Partnering with families to deepen emotional intelligence: • Builds trusting relationships and community • Creates a welcoming school climate • Supports school efforts and goals • Creates a shared language about emotions • Prevents misunderstandings • Helps kids and promotes healthy development on the net.

Interested in learning more about RULER? Plan on attending the Jan. 5 PTA Meeting for a RULER presentation from staff.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

RECESS CORNER Lunch and Recess are a social

time for students and both bring up a lot of good

questions. Here are a few of the questions we hear the most, please look them over and discuss

with your student. They may teach you something about this social part of their day and you can help them remember what is expected.

LUNCH / RECESS Q&A

Q: Can I eat lunch with my child at school?

A: If you would like to have lunch with your child you may check in with the office, sign the visitors book and get a blue sticker that lets all the staff know you have checked in with the office. You may bring a lunch or buy one in the cafeteria.

Q: Can we sit on the tether balls?

A: You may hit, slap, throw and kick tether balls but not sit on them. If you sit on them the metal rod that holds the rope will break and we no longer have a tether ball to play with.

Q: Can we throw balls against the portable and school wall?

A: You can throw balls on the field and basketball court but not against the school walls. While you are at recess other classes are still in session, the ball noise is distracting to everyone inside.

Q: Why can’t we hang on the goal or play in the goal net?

A: The goals move around and can tip over if you hang on them. Every student is responsible to remind their recess friends that they should not hang on the goal. The goals will be removed from recess for everyone if any student in any grade hangs from the goal. The goals were removed last year because someone forgot and hung on the goal. The goals are back this year so we can all try again. Playing in the net damages the net, please try your best to pick the balls out of the net without hanging on the net.

LEGISLATIVE

MLK Day; Please join us!

Where: Capital Building, Olympia, Washington

Registration: Free, lunch available for purchase: http://wastatepta.org/meetings/focus_day/index.html Every year PTA members from all over Washington State assemble in Olympia for Focus Day to connect with other passionate parent advocates, discuss PTA priorities, and to meet with legislators to have our voices heard. This is an important opportunity to meet our representatives and remind them that we are here, we are engaged, and we vote! On Focus Day, the Washington State PTA (WSPTA) develops and delivers sessions in the morning to educate members on the State PTA platform (see below), provide useful advocacy tips, and provide advice to help PTAs develop year-long advocacy strategies.

In the afternoon, PTA members are encouraged to attend prearranged meetings with their state representatives. Alki PTA is partnering with other West Seattle and district 34 schools for these meetings so that we can present a unified front. We are prioritizing engagement on school counselors, multiculturalism, and fully funding education.

So that everyone that attends feels prepared for Focus Day, we will be preparing fact sheets with information about who we are meeting with, and what Alki PTA and Washington State PTA priorities are.

On Focus Day we will:

1. Get an overview of Washington State PTA's and Alki PTA’s legislative priorities.

2. Attend presentations from the State level PTA about advocacy strategies.

3. Connect with other parents, teachers, and education advocates for coalition building.

4. Meet with our legislators to discuss issues that are important to our school and our community, like insufficient funding for schools, and losing our counselor.

5. e will leave a letter with our legislators as a reminder of the issues in our community.

It is going to be a great day! Join us! If you are interested, even if you are just thinking about it, please contact Elise Carlson-Rainer ([email protected]) and Vanessa Longacre-Wilcox ([email protected]) so that you can be on the list to receive information about the day and discuss carpooling to get to Olympia. Focus Day Frequently Asked Questions:

• Are kids allowed at the event? Yes. People do bring kids but there are not activities or childcare set up for the day.

• Will there be a bus going down like last year? Last year a few West Seattle Schools got together and chartered a bus down to Olympia. This is still undecided but a possibility for this year too. Stay tuned.

• Will there also be a way to honor MLK Day while we are in Olympia?

• Yes. There is a rally planned that day by the NAACP, Washington’s Paramount Duty, and Washington State Education Association (WEA) to advocate for equitable school funding. There may also be sessions within the Focus Day program. https://www.facebook.com/events/1795821830658223/

WASHINGTON STATE PTA PLATFORM & LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES 2016 - 2018

On October 22nd & 23rd PTA members from across the state met at the Legislative Assembly in Olympia to vote on the 2016-2018 platform. There were a total of 10 issues (short term priorities) and 3 platform resolutions (long term priorities) that were voted on to the platform. The top 5 issues with the most votes became the Legislative Priorities and will receive the most focus & funding for the year. Below is a list of items from the state platform and how some of Alki PTA’s Legislative priorities fit in:

2016 – 2018 WSPTA Legislative Priorities (Top Five) The following legislative priority descriptions are adapted from details posted here: http://wastatepta.org/advocacy/index.html

Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) – WSPTA will support legislation or polices that integrate social emotional learning and trauma informed practices in the education system, teacher and principal preparation programs and professional learning ensure adequate staffing of psychologists, counselors, social workers, behavioral specialists and nurses in schools and prioritize school climate. Alki’s focus within this issue: To advocate for funding for counselors in every elementary school. Currently the state mandates counselors for middle schools and high schools but it is left up to the discretion of the districts to provide for elementary schools. Because of a lack of overall funding, Seattle Public Schools assigns counselors to elementary schools based on the highest needs. Our position is that all students and schools need the support of school counselors and the state should provide funding to the districts to do so.

Amply Fund Basic Education – WSPTA will support legislation or polices that fulfill Washington State’s paramount duty to amply fund basic education. The Legislature has completed the necessary work to define “basic education,” but has underfunded basic education for decades. School districts have had to rely on levies to make up the shortfall. Parents, teachers, community members, local businesses, and PTAs have spent innumerable hours and countless dollars subsidizing basic education--thus inadvertently exacerbating the equity and opportunity gaps. Alki’s focus: All schools should have what they need to provide students with a safe, quality education. Across the state PTAs are funding all kinds of basic needs and we should not have to. At Alki, we fund basic needs like staffing for safety on the playground or school counselors. In addition, full funding for education would mean building improvements, appropriate student teacher ratios, and could put an end to classroom reshuffling.

LEGISLATIVE

Closing the Opportunity Gap – WSPTA shall initiate and/or support legislation or polices that: Complete implementation of the recommendations of the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC) and HB 1541 to close the educational opportunity gap. Alki’s focus: We believe that all students deserve a quality education that meets them where they are and provides tools necessary to close any gaps in opportunity and/or achievement. Alki PTA will advocate for and is committed to supporting polices that close these gaps.

Standards for Para-educators – Support polices that set statewide standards, training, and career development for para-educators, including training for teachers who have para-educators assisting their classrooms and their principals. Policies shall include minimum employment standards, certification, and endorsements; that are currently not required. Alki’s focus: This issue just makes sense but it also specifically relates to closing the Opportunity Gap. Para-educators provide over half of all instructional hours in programs designed to close the opportunity gap, and often bring more diverse backgrounds and cultural experiences into the classroom.

Breakfast After the Bell – Supports instituting and funding a Breakfast after the Bell program in high needs schools and initiates policies at the district level that encourage early adoption of Breakfast after the Bell Programs.

PTA PRESIDENT LETTER It’s the season of gratitude, Alki, and let me start by saying, Thank you to all of you for another successful Alki Auction! At last tally we have reached over $98,000 – once again exceeding last year’s funds raised and setting a new record. This means that we have achieved over 57% of Alki’s budget for the year helping to ensure the sustainability of school grants, programs and events in place for this year and future years. An amazing accomplishment. A special thank you to the auction planning team who devoted hours of time and energy making it all happen. I have personally worked on the auction for the last three years and can share how rewarding an experience it is but can also speak for myself and others when we say we’re ready to pass the baton! Later in this issue of Currents as you read about the auction successes please consider the roles we are looking to fill next year. We all want to see the auction continue to reach new heights and that can only happen with new energy and ideas!

I think it’s important to note, that as we celebrate our successes, Alki is also giving back this December. I am so excited and proud of the work that’s being done for our surrounding community that really represents the spirit of the season. A few highlights:

• Look for the “giving garland” where you can select an item of need to donate to a collection for families in need.

• The Scholastic sponsored Pajama Drive, organized by Mrs. Kramer, is happening now.

• We are hosting a canned food drive this month and are looking to establish an ongoing relationship with West Seattle Food Bank.

I’m reminded of my favorite quote that always makes me cry: “Unless someone like YOU cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not” – The Lorax. Thank you, Alki, for caring a whole awful lot. See you next year!

AUCTION ASK: At Alki’s first auction – many, many years ago $12,000 was raised and it was held in the Alki Gym. How far we’ve come! Through the continued success of the PTA Auction Alki’s fundraising has been streamlined for many years into two main fundraisers: the PTA Auction and the Alki-a-Thon and eliminated the need for other, shall we say, “less fun” fundraisers (magazine subscriptions, wrapping paper, anyone?) BUT! In putting on the BIG EVENT it takes some seriously devoted parents willing to put in the time and energy to make it happen! Patti Johnson, presently in her final year as Treasurer, has decided to take the auction reins next year as Auction Chair! Thank you, Patti! Now is the time to jump on the auction bandwagon and bring your talents and expertise to next year’s event and fill one of the following roles:

ALKI PTA AUCTION

AUCTION NIGHT BROKE RECORDS: $98,000 & CLIMBING WOW! What an amazing night! Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, contributed, etc. etc. etc. On top of the crazy amount of money we raised for our children ($98,000 and counting)!!! The biggest take away for me that weekend (and the months leading up to it) was the building of our Alki Community. So many of you stepped up to help make this not only the biggest fundraiser of the year, but just an all-around FUN NIGHT… Our kids seriously have no idea how cool (and wild) their parents are! We not only made a record amount of money, but we also had a record turnout for so many of our Volunteer positions (before and during the night) that made the entire event that much smoother for all of the chairs. Thank you again for your generosity with not only your money, but of your time. … I truly appreciate it. – Angela Powell (2016 Auction Chair)
