Team Harmony and Mission Solidified for Complex Project

by Lorinda Hill, Marketing and Business Development Manager, AES

On December 3, 2015, the Irvine Ahtna Environmental team facilitated a partnering session on behalf of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works for the $420M Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Hospital project under construction by McCarthy Builders.

Led by Gregory Grabowski, PE, LEED® AP, we provided

professional integrated partnering facilitation services which included the identication of common project goals, communication processes, an establishment and maintenance of the partnering mindset, and the full commitment of key stakeholders.

e outcome of this session included a mission statement written cooperatively by the stakeholders. e attendees also participated in a survey of most important goals for the team, fun teambuilding exercises, and an introduction/ego dropping exercise.

Some feedback from the participants includes: • “Looking forward to completing the mission with this team!” Mike

Gritters, VP, Healthcare, McCarthy Builders• “Gregory, many thanks to you for your engagement, preparation

with the various stakeholders, and leading the Partnering Session...” Scott McCallister, VP, Jacobs

is project involves not only Los Angeles County, but the hospital sta, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., Jacobs sta who lead the project management/construction management, several architectural and engineering design rms, and building inspectors.

is project has already brought requests for more of this type of work in the future for other commercial rms.

Dear fellow employees,

e past month has been a blur of events, meetings and holiday gatherings. Ahtna was well represented with a booth and attendees at the Resource Development Conference (RDC) which took place in Anchorage last month. Tom Maloney, Ahtna Netiye’ CEO, was invited to serve on the panel for the Alaska LNG project update and we were

able to connect with attendees on our long-term Alyeska work and share information on our Tolsona Oil and Gas project which is picking up steam with drilling scheduled to begin in the Ahtna region this spring. You can read more about the project in this article published by Petroleum News and look for updates in future issues of this newsletter.

I am happy to report that thanks to the outpouring of support from our employees, 947 food items were collected in Anchorage and Glennallen for donation to the Copper River Native Association (CRNA) Food Bank. It is wonderful to see our employees giving back and two other charitable causes that our employees are passionate about are featured on page 2.

In addition to a regular Ahtna shareholder dividend distribution, we were also able to pay an elder dividend to our shareholder-owners age 62 and over this month. It is because of the combined eort of our employees across the Ahtna family that this was possible and applaud you for your commitment to the Ahtna mission.

We are truly fortunate to have so many exceptional employees at Ahtna and we had the opportunity to honor some of our outstanding employees at the recent company Christmas parties. You can read about the contributions of the 2015 Ahtna Employees of the Year on page 3.

I hope that you all have a merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and enjoy the time with your family and those you love. I will see you in the new year and wish you a happy and healthy 2016!

Tsin’aen (thank you) for all you do,

Michelle Anderson, President (AI)

Safety Moment: Winter & Extreme Weather

While the danger from winter weather varies across the country, nearly all Americans, regardless of where they live, are likely to face some type of severe winter weather at some point in their lives. Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow or rain or sleet that lasts for several days. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

Winter weather can bring injury, illness and fatalities; heat and power outages; loss of communications; and challenging travel. e National Weather Service refers to winter storms as the “Deceptive Killers” because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Instead, people die in trac accidents on icy roads, fog shrouded highways and of hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold. It is important to be prepared for winter weather before it strikes. Even those of us living in Alaska can learn more about Winter Storms & Extreme Cold at the links shown.

Culture Momente Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve covers quite a bit of the Ahtna region and is bigger

than the country of Switzerland. ere are many prehistoric and historic archaeological sites in the park, not only of Athabascan people, but groups such as Tlingit and Eyak who later moved out of the area. e oldest sites date to 11,000 years BP (before present). With the receding of glaciers, more artifacts and sites are always being found.

AGSC Awarded Distinguished PG&E Gold Shovel Standard CertificationEvery six minutes in the United States, an underground utility line is damaged during excavation work. For one of Ahtna Government

Services Inc. (AGSC’s) best clients, Pacic Gas and Electric (PG&E), in 2014, they experienced nearly 2,000 “dig-ins” to their underground facilities—that’s almost six “dig-ins” per day, and these mishaps resulted in injury, environmental impairment and property damage in the millions.

In response, PG&E launched the “Gold Shovel Standard”, a rst-of-its kind excavation safety program designed to reduce “dig-ins” and protect PG&E’s underground gas and electric system. With safety as PG&E’s highest priority, they developed

the Gold Shovel Standard Certication process to ensure that PG&E’s hired contractors adhere to the safest excavation standards.

With the Gold Shovel Program, PG&E has set perhaps the highest bar for contractor and subcontractor selection in the nation. AGSC aggressively responded (thanks to concerted eorts of Pete Rice and the AGSC Construction team) with the development and submission of a comprehensive “Gold Shovel / Dig-In Prevention Program Plan.”

AGSC not only received Gold Shovel Standard Certication from PG&E, it was also given the highest score of “A” by PG&E under the ISNetworld Safety Program Metrics. An A rating by PG&E means that AGSC is listed as a “Reliable and Recommended Contractor” for PG&E. ISNetworld is the leading Compliance Records Management and Reporting System in the US. AGSC’s ISNetworld subscription and A rating by PG&E includes many benets, one of which is exposure to hundreds of Hiring Clients within ISNetworld.

AGSC senior management was invited by PG&E for a special presentation of the Gold Shovel certication, and PG&E indicated that AGSC’s plan is a model for other contractors wishing to perform work for PG&E. AGSC is looking forward to a continued safe and rewarding partnership with PG&E.

Craig O’Rourke, AGSC President and Dave Frenzel, AGSC Director of Construction, receive Gold Shovel Program certication and award from Ms. Karen Moglia, Senior Damage Prevention Specialist at PG&E. Gold Shovel Awards Presentation, San Ramon, Ca., Dec. 3, 2015.

Recent STAR Award WinnerMatt Kiviaho with Ahtna Construction & Primary Products Corp. (AC&PPC) received a

Level 1 STAR award for preventing what could have been a serious accident. While observing grading at Colony Middle School, Matt noticed that the grader operator did not see a worker who was placing stakes. Matt yelled just as the front tire of the grader hit the man. e grader stopped and the worker was not injured. Matt’s prompt intervention prevented a potentially serious incident. He then held a safety brieng with the crew to talk about the near-miss incident; discussing the lesson learned, identifying corrective actions to prevent a recurrence and taking the time to report the incident.

Giving Back to our CommunitiesATSI’s Annual Chili Cook-off raises money for Child Abuse Prevention Association

On December 3, the crew at MCAS Beaufort held its 6th Annual Chili Cook-O to raise money for Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA), a local organization. Employee of the Year, Molly Grissom, organizes the annual event. Each year, CAPA’s Angel

Tree program provides gis for hundreds of local children. e participating children are residents of CAPA’s Open Arms Shelter or are

Beaufort County foster children. e ATSI crew at MCAS Beaufort sponsors 50 children by providing gis from the children’s wish list. Money raised at the annual Chili Cook-O is used to purchase additional gis or supplies for the Open Arms Shelter.

is year 10 employees competed in the cook-o and raised $305. Ocers from the installation’s Public Works oce judge the cook-o each year. A big hit this year was the band that performed; Lil’ Wayne and the Safety Committee Band. e band

played “safety” themed songs that they composed including Work Safety Blues (video) and We Have a Goal (video).

EPA Corvallis construction team spreads holiday cheer and Loads of LoveOn December 16, Ahtna Environmental’s EPA Corvallis construction team, led by Mark Lamberty and Brenda Tyone, volunteered for a homeless dinner and support event called “Loads of Love.” e event was sponsored by Northwest Hills Community Church and oered laundry service, turkey dinner, clothes, and gi bags. e gi bags that the team put together consisted of a stocking cap, scarf, gloves, hand warmers, toothbrush, and Christmas candy and a card. Mark arranged for the hats to be donated from St. Jude’s hospital.

Loads of Love’s community event impact included participation by about 25 people. Brenda Tyone temporarily relocated from Alaska to Corvallis and her participation in this event has helped her to acclimate to her new home in Oregon. Brenda said “It brought joy to my heart to see the smiles, and how thankful they were to get clean clothes, a nice dinner, and gis.”
