Why settle for paper hats and party horns this New Year’s Eve? Play the part of a 1920s celebrity as you arrive to a red carpet entrance, try your luck at the casino, enjoy the speakeasy 1920s lounge and celebrate the arrival of a new year with a champagne toast at midnight. The Great Gatsby Casino Night Gala at the Mt. Zion Convention Center promises a unique and exhilarating New Year’s Eve to remember!

Last year was the first for the Great Gatsby themed event, and more than 200 costume-clad individuals arrived ready to party. Just like last year, costumes are encouraged but not mandatory. Kelly McCourt Edwards, event coordinator for Mt. Zion Convention Center, recalls that only one partier at last year’s event was not in costume! People arrived in 1920s attire and took on that persona all evening. Tickets sold quickly last year, and there is a chance they’ll sell out this year. They’ve expanded to make room for more guests; however, only a limited number of tickets will be sold, with a 500-guest maximum.

When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed with a celebrity red carpet entrance. The casino, where professional dealers are on their game, is open from 7 pm until 10 pm and the speakeasy 1920s

lounge is open from 10 pm to 1 am, during which time you’ll partake in heavy appetizers, a dessert and cash bar and music. In the casino, you’ll try your luck at Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Texas Hold’ Em, Caribbean Stud, Let it Ride and a Money Wheel. You may even purchase tickets for a chance to win $100,000 in the “Cash Cube!” The casino will also feature a pianist at the piano bar. When the tables shut down, over in the lounge popular band Jac Freeze will be playing hits from the 1920s for the first half of the evening, and the rest of their show will be popular cover tunes. A gorgeous Buick Special, owned by Josh Page, will be on hand for photo ops.

Tickets are only $60 and include use of the casino, $50 of startup chips, the speakeasy, heavy appetizers, a dessert bar, the raffle drawing, dancing and a champagne toast at midnight. Event tickets are available at the Village of Mt. Zion, Sav-Mor Pharmacy, Family Video, Hawthorn Suites and Kenny’s Ace Hardware and also online at mtzconventioncenter.com. Credit card, cash and check are accepted.

This year organizers have added a sure-to-be-popular option to help you make a real night of it! The Mt. Zion Convention Center teamed up with Hawthorn Suites to create an event + hotel package. Price is $209, and in addition to everything listed above, it also includes a suite for two, complimentary breakfast and a shuttle from the Mt. Zion Convention Center to Hawthorn Suites. (Only available for purchase at the Village of Mt. Zion office.) Of course, you must be 21 years of age to participate, and photo identification is required.

ART SPEAK10 by Sue Powell

Sue Powell is the Gallery Director for the Decatur Area Arts Council. When not hanging at gallery shows, you might catch her on stage!

‘Tis the season for giving! Gift giving, of course (more about that later), but what about the many other opportunities we have to give to our families and community? Think about it…

Decatur’s many non-profit organizations provide social services, recreation, arts and entertainment for all ages. All of them rely upon volunteer hours and generous donations to offer programs to our community. Find one whose mission speaks to you! Give. Never underestimate the value of even a relatively small donation, whether time or money.

Support locally owned businesses. Did you know that about 60 cents of every dollar you spend at a locally owned small business stays in our community? Your patronage gives back to Decatur, and you’ll be enjoying a great meal, interesting shopping and personal service.

Spread a little joy! See the glass as half full. Bestow your positive attitude, patience and upbeat outlook on others. Be a friend to someone in need. Smile (even in that irritating grocery line—especially then). Positive energy is contagious, making it the gift that keeps giving. And you’ll feel better yourself when the hubbub of the season gets out of control!

My personal favorite? Enrich your life with the ARTS. Give yourself and others an opportunity to enjoy art exhibits and classes, live theatre, concerts, dance, a good book and more. Take someone to a free exhibit or buy tickets and gift certificates to arts events. The arts contribute to our quality of life in uplifting, inspiring and sometimes thought-provoking ways. Especially, introduce your children to the arts. This is not only a gift that enriches their young lives but a gift that will continue to enrich their futures. Children involved in the arts generally communicate better, have higher level thinking skills, achieve better in school, develop increased self-confidence and can adapt “outside the box.”

Finally, let’s WRAP UP the list of gift-giving ideas with a shopping spree to Xmas ARTicles, the annual holiday shop in Decatur Area Arts Council’s Madden Arts Center! You’ll find original fine art and crafts created by fifty artists—wearables like jewelry, hats, purses and scarves; decorative items for the home; woodworking, ceramics, photography, ornaments, bird houses and more. The prices are affordable. The atmosphere is relaxing and inviting. You may be tempted to purchase gifts for favorite people on your list as well as for yourself.

Come enjoy the downtown Christmas Walk to kick off your season of giving on Wednesday, December 3, from 5-8 pm. Enjoy live music, holiday treats and first pick at Xmas ARTicles gifts when you stop by the Madden Arts Center.

One last muse… why don’t we all think about the holiday season as a new beginning rather than the end of the year. Let’s use the season as a springboard to spread joy and to give of ourselves all year ‘round. Giving is as much fun for the one who gives as the one who receives.

KINETIC SAND™ $18.50 Children's Museum of Illinois55 South country club road, Decatur

Just a little something we ran across and wanted to share.

Kinetic Sand™ is made of 98% pure sand, and from the best I can figure out, 2% magic. In a way, it's like silly putty, but it's also like working with wet sand. You can crumble it and let it run through your fingers and then gather it all up to start building a castle.

Oh, and there's no mess, so it's got that going for it! I wandered into the Children's Museum in search of a cool gift, but I'm not sure I want to give away my first pack. It's just plain neat.

The Museum uses Kinetic Sand™ in an indoor sandbox, too, so you can give it a test run if you'd like!

The Food Dude is not a professional food critic. He just really, really likes food.

THE FOOD DUDE12

If you’re looking for the ‘Cheers’ experience where you can not only become a regular but be somewhere that everybody knows your name (and your order), I’d suggest you stop into the Elm Street Grill in Argenta.

Plan ahead if you’re stopping in for dinner, as this little small town secret is anything but, and you’ll not only find the street out front lined with cars overflowing the block but the handful of tables bursting at the seams. Not to worry if there’s not a table in sight, I highly suggest getting a firsthand view of the hustle and bustle at the bar.

We opted to belly up one evening and had front row seats for the amazing service and overflowing hospitality of the staff. Not only will your drink be filled before you even realize it’s nearly empty, but if you’re one to frequent, your beer of choice will be poured and waiting before you’ve even settled into your seat!

But enough about the small town hospitality, what about the food?!?! If you’re looking for no frills, down-home cooking and all American classics, then look no further. From the hearty

chili to the triple stacked BLT with thick cut fries, the Elm Street Grill has your comfort food cravings covered. With burgers, wings, sandwiches and even iconic Butch’s Pizza, you’ll have a new favorite for every night of the week!

Be sure to take a menu home when you’re in so you don’t miss the weekly specials. I highly suggest Monday/Thursday for wing night. With a pool table, video games and friendly atmosphere, don’t plan to eat and run; you’re going to want to stick around a bit (don’t worry, they’re open until 1 am, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy).

If you’ve ever wished you could take a break from the hectic pace of the holiday season, you and your family can take a step back in time to a quieter, more elegant period by attending a Victorian Christmas tea at a Decatur landmark this season.

Mari-Mann HerbsAt Mari-Mann Herbs, the Annual Christmas High Tea has been held nearly every December for at least 25 years according to Mike King, president of Mari-Mann Herb Co., Inc. The teas were started by his mother, who also founded the company. Now, Mrs. Claus, AKA Liz King, Mike’s wife, presides over the teas. The events still appeal mostly to mothers and daughters, who often dress up and bring their favorite dolls along to enjoy the quiet of the countryside and the relaxed

Millikin HomesteadNearby, the Millikin Homestead is also decked out with Christmas decorations for its Victorian Christmas Tea and Open House. Assorted cookies to enjoy with coffee, tea and warm cider are on the menu, and goodies made by members will be for sale at the Sweet Treats Bakery. Proceeds support preservation and education. In past years, local musicians have performed throughout the house, and Terry Grant, the board member in charge of scheduling tours and special events, hopes to have them again this year. “It's a beautiful time to visit the Millikin Homestead, and a great opportunity for people to see what a treasure it is,” Terry says.

atmosphere. Sometimes, though, dads and brothers like to come along because the snacks prepared by Joel King, Mike’s brother and official Mari-Mann chef, are numerous and delicious. This year they’ll include meatballs as well as traditional tea cookies and old family recipes. Mike calls it a “buffet extravaganza,” and the guys don’t have to dress up to be welcome.

Oglesby MansionIn Decatur’s West End, the Garden Club of Decatur decorates in Victorian style for Christmas Tea at the Oglesby Mansion, and everyone is invited to drop in for refreshments and to see their handiwork. While Mary Turner, president of the mansion’s board of directors, acknowledges that the teas are usually favored by women, children are more than welcome. Last year, 18 participated in a scavenger hunt with a fancy Christmas cookie as the reward for each child who found all the hidden objects.Men also attend the Oglesby Mansion tea. “I don’t know if they come intentionally or get dragged in by their wives,” Mary says. But she thinks they come mostly because they’re interested in the progress of restorations, now in Phase 3. This year, the mansion will be handicapped accessible for Christmas.
