Remembrance Day

EE Oliver remembered those that sacrificed their lives for our freedom at our

Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 7. Students and staff listened to

Fairview Legion representative Mr. Ken Coghill give a very moving speech about

why it is so important that we never forget and that we recognize the

importance and significance of Remembrance Day.

“Praising what is lost makes the remembrance dear.” { William Shakespeare }

White to Red in Support of Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta

We invite you to help our school turn from white to red in support of sick kids &

their families. Ronald McDonald House provides a temporary home away from

home for families with seriously ill or injured children seeking treatment in

Northern Alberta. In 2012, an office in Grande Prairie was opened to better

serve the families in the Peace Region due to the majority of the families com-

ing from our area. Many families from our community & our school have used

the resources available through Ronald McDonald House.

We will be selling tags to put up in our school to turn it

from White to Red. The tags will be sold for $2 each

with all proceeds going towards the Ronald McDonald

House. Tags will be on sale starting November 28 until

December 12. Our goal for the campaign is to sell 1000

tags to support the families from our community that

access these facilities. Please help us to meet our goal!

Principal’s Message

As we head into the holiday season, the EE Oliver community has many

events upcoming. On Friday, December 5, we will have another after-

noon options day. Students will get to try out an activity from a large

selection of events including kids’ yoga, cross-country skiing, cookie

decorating, carolling, Lego building and manicures.

We will also have our annual Christmas concert on December 18. There

are two shows to accommodate our large population. The 10am concert

is for families of students with last names A-L, the 1pm concert is for

families of students with last names M-Z.

While December promises to be a fun and festive month, I would like

to remind everyone of our cold weather policy. Our temperature cut-

off is –25 degrees Celsius. This temperature includes wind chill. If

the temperature is above –25, the students will be outside for recess-

es so it is very important that they dress for the weather and for play

in the snow. Ski pants, a winter jacket, hat and mitts, and winter boots

are essential. Having the right gear makes recess time a lot more com-

fortable and fun!

As this is the last newsletter before the New Year, I would like to

take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and re-

laxing holiday season. Take care and all the best in

2015!

Mrs. McGovern

Moustache Day!!

The Grade 3 Health classes at E.E. Oliver Elementary have

been learning about empathy with picture books and videos

supplied by the Alberta SPCA. We made Kindness Checklists

and have created a Kindness Tree in our ancillary area to

share our Kindness Acts with our school and our community!

schools throughout Alberta! http://everylivingthing.ca/

Performing Arts Fundraiser

Thank you to Mrs. Elspeth Biegel who helped us raise $250 to go towards our Performing Arts

fund which allows us to bring arts & culture groups into the school. Elspeth sold cookie mixes

and soup mixes at our Parent-Teacher Interview nights held on November 18 and 20 and gave

the school a portion of the sales.

The WITS Primary Program teaches children in

Kindergarten to Grade 3 to make safe and posi-

tive choices when faced with peer conflict. The

WITS acronym - Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out,

and Seek help - provides a common language that

children and the adults in their environments can

use to talk about and respond to peer victimiza-

tion.

The WITS LEADS Program provides strategies

and resources that are developmentally appro-

priate for older elementary aged students so

that they can become WITS LEADerS. Like the

WITS Program, WITS LEADS is a literature

based program with over 30 dynamic activities

that may be integrated throughout a variety of

subject areas. The WITS LEADS Program

teaches five problem-solving strategies to help

children deal with conflict and keep

safe:

Look and listen,

Explore points of view, Act, Did it work?

and Seek help.
