DESCRIPTION
As a kid, December was always a special and magical time. But now, as an adult, the holiday season has become more like a part-time job involving organizing family parties and countless hours of shopping. As parents we want our kids to experience the same happiness we did, but we must also teach them that the holidays is not just about getting the latest toy or video game. Our children should also begin to acknowledge that it’s not a joyful time for everyone and learn to help the less-fortunate.

publishersNOTE
As a kid, December was always a special and magical time. But now, as an adult, the holiday season has become more like a part-time job involving organizing family parties and countless hours of shopping. As parents we want our kids to experience the same happiness we did, but we must also teach them that the holidays is not just about getting the latest toy or video game. Our children should also begin to acknowledge that its not a joyful time for everyone and learn to help the less-fortunate.
There are many ways families can give, such as the Leonard-Davidson family who combined work, the holiday season and some artistic love to make their own unique tradition in this months feature The Gift of Giving. And, speaking of traditions, Our Kids Magazine continues its annual Getting in on the Giving section with a list of area organizations in need of volunteers and donations.
Of course, its always nice to stay warm at home with your kids during the winter break and keeping them occupied is sometimes chal-lenging. One fun at-home activity is homemade crafts and you can read about how to make fun & easy ornaments in our holiday crafts article. Or, maybe you are leaving town to visit family this month. If so, make sure you read 5 Tips for Keeping Your Sanity while Traveling with Small Children before your trip.
Happy Holidays!

Did youKnow?
Most people are familiar with San Antonios iconic Cowboy Boots displayed outside of North Star Mall, but did you know that they stand 40 ft. high, are 8 ft. in diam-eter, and weigh five tons? Thats 5,000 lbs. each! Artist Bob Wade, a native Texan, originally created the boots for the Washington Project for the Arts, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. The black, brown and white simulated plucked ostrich skin boots took Wade six weeks to build. During the Holidays, the Cowboy Boots glow with 8,000 red and white LED lights and serve as an official symbol that the Holiday season is here!
Did you know there is a discount bookstore in the basement of Central Library at 600 Soledad St. in downtown San Antonio called The BookCellar? The bookstore is operated by volunteer Friends of the Public Library and benefits San Antonio libraries. There are thousands of books for kids, teens and adults, plus CDs, DVDs and audio books, most for 50 cents or less. A big half-price book sale starts after Thanksgiving and continues into December. The BookCellar is open daily (including weekends) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Parking is free for the first hour at the Central Library Parking Garage next to the library.

You may have heard that San Antonio is getting its very own Aquarium this December, but did you know that admission for Foster Children is always free with a form of state-issued identification.
Marc Gottlieb, owner of the San Antonio Aquarium, places a premium on the family experience, with a special interest in foster children. Having hosted 31 of their own, and adopt-ing 3, they understand the struggles foster families face. Non-profit agencies serving underprivileged children are also encouraged to email San Antonio Aquarium at [email protected] to apply for free annual passes.
Foster children, as well as select charities helping families, never have and never will pay admission at any of our aquariums. When we see the positive impact a few hours of animal interac-tion can have on children, particularly the underprivi-leged, we want to make sure they feel and know that here, they are VIPs, said Alui Cleaver, San Antonio Aquarium COO.

Ellen Leonard simply says of her family holiday tradi-tion of 16 years: Wow! To see that smile on their faces is amazing.
Bob Davidson, and his wife, Ellen Leonard, believe Christmas is a time of giving. Their family have fused Catholic and Jewish traditions into this holiday, and lovingly spread Christmas cheer their own special way each year. Ellen says of her blended family: We are mixed. Im Jewish, and my husband Bob, is Catholic. We are eclectic.
Ellen Leonard, a doctor who specializes in Pediatric Rehabilitation, requests to work on Christmas each year. Being Jewish, Ellen didnt observe Christmas like others. It wasnt about the material things; Christmas was a time of giving.
Their first year, the Leonard-Davidson family decided they would deliver gingerbread cookies (shaped like the state of Texas) to patients and nurses in the hospital where Ellen was working on Christmas. After realizing most of the patients were diabetic, the family decided to re-think their giving ideas. With a little help from macaroni noodles, the cookies were transformed into ornaments for hanging- their ornament tradition was then born.
Overwhelmed with the response, the Leonard-Davidson family began to plan bigger. With a head count of over 100 patients and nurses, Ellen found herself making multiple trips to surrounding Michaels stores to find more wooden ornaments to paint and decorate for Christmas. Luckily, Kims Wood, an online wood restoration and finishing shop had many beautifully hand crafted wooden ornaments that Ellen knew would be perfect. Kims Wood even donated double the amount she ordered due to a previous shortage in her shipment so she too could be part of the tradition, and praised the family for their benevolent deeds.
The news of their endeavor spread the Christmas cheer to various communities of people. Even kids doing service hours would show up to paint ornaments for patients and medical staff working on Christmas. Despite weather conditions, family, friends, community members, and kids would gather around the tarps on the ground to paint ornaments. Christmas morning the ornaments would be delivered, and the family would have a nice breakfast at Dennys. It became our tradition, Ellen says.
There are no rules. Someone might take two hours to paint an ornament or they might just throw some glitter

on it. The art and design that these individuals make, its just wow! Bob says. You wont find just plain green and red Santas, there might be an orange Santa, or even a UT and A&M one. The love that goes into each one is amazing, Bob says.
When asked how families can get involved, Ellen told us, You can bake cookies and other goodies for the fire-fighters, paint ornaments and walk over to your nearest nursing home. There is always a way to spread the gift of giving. So many people have to work on Christmas, why not put a smile on their faces and show them you care.
A big thank you to the Leonard-Davidson family, which includes, Bob Davidson, Ellen Leonard, and daughters Arianna Davidson, and Micah Leonard.
What if Christmas, he thought, doesnt come from a store. What if Christmas,
perhaps, means a little bit more. - Dr. Seuss

O Christmas Tree
1. First, gather your three Popsicle sticks to create a triangle for your Christmas tree base. (Dont be afraid to try any colors!) Use the hot glue gun to glue the three sides of the triangle base together
2. Next, draw and color a topper and trunk for your tree. Be creative with it. Maybe its not a star- it could be a heart or a Santa. One of the best parts about handmade ornaments-they are made by YOU!
3. The most fun step is finally heredecorating your Christmas tree! Add your personal touch! Go color crazy and dont be shy with the buttons!
4. Lastly, attach a ribbon for hanging, and voila! Now you have yourself a beautiful one-of-a-kind Christmas tree ornament!

Get inon the Giving
To celebrate the season of giving, add a good cause to your familys holiday shopping list this year. Our list of 30 South Texas organizations offers dozens of ways to help fill their wish lists for helping kids and families in need.
Giving to other families is a value you can teach your children that goes a long way, says Yesenia Gonzalez, director of parenting programs at Avance, which serves San Antonio families with young children. Youre a role model for your children. When theyre out there in their careers and wanting to give back to the community, it can start with something like this. Its a ripple effect.
Each year, ChildSafe helps hundreds of Bexar County children traumatized by abuse and neglect. To meet their needs and assist them during a very stressful time, we rely on donations from individuals and corporations alike, says ChildSafe CEO Kim Abernethy. We couldnt do our work without the generosity of the community.
Bandera County Helping Hand delivers boxes of food to Texas Hill Country families each month, runs a community health clinic, offers parenting classes and referral services, and stocks clothing for kids and grownups in need.
Families can donate time, contribute used items to the organizations thrift store or send gift cards because theres a lot of things we cant keep in stock, says executive director Jesse Parks. Theres all kinds of neat ways they can contrib-ute, she says.
Communities in Schools of San Antonio works at 70 public schools to help kids with school supplies, after-school
programs and other services. Trained site managers help at-risk kids as part of a program that aims to ultimately lower school dropout rates.
Financial contributions are especially welcome this year, says marketing director Felisha Sanchez. We need more case managers to be in more schools, she says.
Here are 30 ways to get in on the giving for a good cause this holiday season:
Any Baby Can assists families with infants and chil-dren through age any12 who are suffering from chronic illness, disability or developmental delay. The organization needs financial contributions, volunteers, diapers and formula. For the holidays, the nonprofit needs unwrapped toys or games for ages 1 to 18, movie tickets and gift cards. For more informa-tion, visit AnyBabyCanSA.org or call 210-227-0170.
The Arc of San Antonio has served children and adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities for more than 60 years. This nonprofit helps more than 6,000 people a year with day programs, school liaison services and outreach programs. The Arc needs financial contributions, volunteers and gently used household items. Visit Arc-SA.org or call 210-490-4300 for more information.

seniors. Your family can help with a financial contribution or donations of housewares, linens, books, furniture and other items to stock the Assistance League Thrift House. For more information, call 210-732-1200 or visit AssistanceLeagueSA.org.
Avance has been helping San Antonio families for over 4 decades. The organization provides parenting classes and early education programs for children ages 3 and younger. If you have ever traveled with small children, you know how nerve-racking it can be. The stress level kicks up a notch when you are flying. Even short trips can be exasperating with an inconsol-able toddler or multiple children. Maintenance delays and aircraft issues, traffic jams and construc-tion, and many other un-anticipated issues often extend an already exhausting experience. Luckily, with a little bit of pre-planning there are some easy ways to keep the kids occupied and happy while traveling, even on long trips. Here are five tips for maintaining your sanity while traveling with small children.
Pack a travel kit and include some new toys: The dollar bins at large retailers or other discount stores provide an inexpensive way to load up on new toys and activities. Stock up on crayons and coloring books, small dry-erase boards, flash cards,

books, etc. To make this even more fun and exciting, individually wrap each item and mark it for the order in which it should be opened. Start with the least exciting (which will still be exciting to them because its a pres-ent.) As they get bored with an item, progress through the presents. As a side note, be sure you do not tell the children in advance that you have packed a bag full of presents, or they may just be interested in getting to the next one.
Carry on the car seat and boppy pillow: If you are flying with small children, consider carrying their car seat onto the plane. Sitting in their own car seat provides a sense of safety and familiarity to a toddler, and it also keeps them better restrained than the seat belt in the airplane seat. From experience, it does not take a toddler long to figure out that they can escape from the belt by simply lifting the latch. If you are traveling with an infant, the boppy pillow can be used to support the baby in your arms, which is much more comfortable during the flight.Invest in portable technology:If you do not already have a portable DVD player, a tablet, Leapsters, or other similar forms of entertainment, these are invaluable for a trip. Download some new games and pack some new movies prior to traveling.
Pack Plenty of Snacks:Fatigue and hunger are usually the culprit behind many meltdowns (even for adults.) Be proactive by packing a variety of snacks to keep your child occupied while ward-ing off a hunger induced tantrum. Carrying your own snacks will also save you a ton of money.Plan to Make Frequent Stops: If traveling a long distance by car, try to travel at night or early in the morning, when the children will likely sleep. For daytime travel, plan some stops at attractions along the route to break the trip into smaller chunks. If that is not an option, pack a ball or Frisbee and burn off some energy while running around for a little while at a rest area. The trip may take a little longer this way, but it will be more enjoyable for everyone.
The most important element of traveling with small children is to have realistic expectations for the trip. The children may be overly excited, perhaps nervous, and after the excitement wears off, bored. Make the trip fun for everyone by playing with the kids. With a little bit of pre-planning, you can make the trip into an adventure for everyone rather than a stressful and unpleasant experience.
