Well, we are full steam
ahead going into our Alliance 2014 Holiday Show and it's going to be a good one. The venue is being prepared as we speak and we owe a special thanks to some very special members who are working their tails off to make sure our Show is a success. As always, Al Arne is leading the way with our show layout and physical preparation. His years of experience en-able us to always have an exhibition that presents itself as professional and well organized. Jim Corrigan ( our featured artist for December) and Dan Gellenbeck have also been right by Al's side, assisting him at every turn. Jim has also volunteered to manage all of our "small art works" coordination within our Show to maximize the exposure of our gift shop items as well as the other smaller works of art that need to be well presented in our Holiday Show Gallery.
Besides these volunteers, there are many others behind the scenes doing the necessary tasks to ensure that our Show is up to snuff. Of course there is our Treasurer Donna Lewis who, besides her normal monthly ac-counting duties, is setting up the sales and money han-dling procedures necessary to take care of the daily business during our 10-day exhibition. She works con-tinually behind the scenes year-round to make sure we do things right and to keep us on target.
A special thanks goes out to Judy Delmonico, Maryanne Noli, and Carmen Timm who have been working for months on the art entry procedures, record keeping, and jurying. These ladies are working all the time to make sure that we have a well-run program. Their on-going work goes well beyond our show periods. Their tasks of late have been especially difficult because of our new jury process and show exhibit changes that have come about since leaving our Gallery in May. Their work will continue as we further refine these processes so that they better serve you, our member-ship. I would be remiss not to say a few words about
Carolyn Tolliver. While she holds no formal position, nonetheless Carolyn is always there to help, sharing her vast experience in working out various details that are necessary for a successful exhibition. Ladies, thank you so much.
Our newly formed Marketing Department, headed by Kim White, is moving us in a direction that will take us into new areas of growth and maximize our exposure so the community hears of your efforts. Thank you so much to our new marketing volunteers:

So many people, members and nonmembers alike, don't realize that the Arizona Art Alliance is an "All Volunteer" organization and has been so since its inception in 2000. It's an incredible feat when you think about it. Since its beginning, the Art Alliance has defied the odds and its naysayers and continued to carry on its business of pro-moting our members’ art and serving the community with Outreach Programs that are executed by our Mem-ber Leagues. Thanks goes out to the Arizona Artists Guild, Phoenix Artists Guild, Mesa Art League, Scottsdale Artists League, Desert Artists, Desert Sage Artists, WHAM, and Art League West, all responsible and carry-ing out their generous Outreach efforts. We can never say enough about our members who are the Teachers, Mentors, and Assistants who work tirelessly to bring
their art to those in need. YOU GUYS (I use the term
loosely) are what it is all about!
In many ways our Organization is quite unique. The many challenges that the Alliance has faced over the years, and will face in the future, have and will be met head-on with our greatest strength…..our Leagues, their Member Artists, and our Volunteers.
It is at this special time of the year that our families

come together and give thanks for our blessings. And it is at this time of year that our Alliance must reflect and pay a special tribute to those who have served us so well in the past and make their personal sacrifices going forward. There are so many people I have missed in this article that deserve our gratitude, but they are not forgotten. We see the fruits of their labor with our 14 years of accomplish-ments. We, as artists, are so fortunate to have been blessed with talents that we can offer up for the enjoyment of oth-ers. Whether it’s a viewer or art lover gazing at our work, a child lighting up because we have helped him or her create, a Veteran seeking relief from the rigors of service, or one of our elderly who finds solace in the artwork we helped them produce…..we are the ones who benefit most. Our reward is from Life’s true gift, the Gift of Giving.

One of the things that my parents taught me as a very young man was that it was my responsibility to give back to my community. I didn't have the means to give very much at the time, but they stressed that our community deserves to share in any success we have and that the gifts should be "meaningful"--that can mean a lot to different people. The way I understood it was that I should find charitable causes that I was passionate about and support them to the best of my ability--sometimes that means time, sometimes money, sometimes both.
I first found out about the Arizona Art Alliance through my relationship with Mike Brady. Mike invited my wife, Debbie, and me to the art show at The Pavillions several years ago. We had a great time and bought some of our first art together--our "Warrior Princess" made out of a gourd is dis-played proudly in our home! Tom James, the son of one of the founders of Raymond James Financial and the current Chairman of the Board of Directors, is an avid art collec-tor. The home office in St. Petersburg is literally like an art museum--it is all Tom and his wife, Mary's personal collec-tion and they have a special affinity for Southwestern art. We hosted a client event at the Phoenix Art Museum earlier in 2014 which Tom attended and he was very em-phatic about the need to support artists in your local com-munity. "When you buy a piece of art from a local artist you are buying a piece of that community!" he pleaded. I could think of no better way to support arts in my local commu-nity than through support of the Arizona Art Alliance.
One of the other main reasons I support the Arizona Art Alli-ance is I believe in investing in people. When one makes a charitable contribution, I feel that it is an investment in that organization and that organization has to be led by people who instill trust and confidence. Mike Brady is one of those people. He is as loyal, sincere and as genuine as a man I have ever met. My support of the Arizona Art Alliance is a vote of confidence in Mike Brady. I know how passionate he is about art and if he is putting his heart and soul into an organization, I think that organization has a good chance of being successful.
I am proud to be a part of this event and I wish all of you continued success in your artistic endeavors.

The Arizona Art Alliance introduces “CONCERTS & CANVAS”, a collaboration with
the Scottsdale Philharmonic Orchestra. Our first concert was held at the Scotts-
dale Bible Church on Sunday October 19th with selected and limited fine art dis-
played in the lobby. The combined event was attended by a culturally savvy audi-
ence filling the 1800 seat theater with very few empty seats. The audience was
exposed to world class music by its 70 plus piece orchestra and by some of the
finest fine art provided by Alliance artists.
Art was in place an hour prior to the concerts beginning, allowing time for con-
cert goers to admire the art and come back again during the intermission and at
the concerts end. Many questions were asked about the art, the Alliance organi-
zation and when the art would be displayed again. All comments were supportive
of the collaboration and encouraged its continuance.
The next concert will be held at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on
December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day.

fusely and he went on his way. It wasn’t until
a few hours later that Gertrude discovered
the “Made in China” sticker on the bottom of
the box. Why did Harold lie?
Irene arrived next, and she
also came with a gift. It was
a ring with a large amber
stone in the middle. She
waxed eloquently about how
it was a precious family heir-
loom and worth a fortune.
Later when the large stone fell
out of the setting, Gertie discov-
ered it was plastic and the band
turned her finger green. Why did Irene lie?
Leonard dropped by after lunch and he also
presented Gertrude with a gift. When she
opened it, she wasn’t
exactly sure what it
was. Leonard was
quick to tell here that it
was a very ancient arti-
fact from the Ping dy-
nasty. He went on to
say that it was thou-
sands of years old and
worth millions. After
Leonard went on his
merry way, Gertie ex-
amined the object and discovered Leonard’s
granddaughter’s name scratched into the
bottom. It was obviously some sort of school
project. Why did Leonard lie?
By late afternoon Gertie was totally ex-
hausted, both emotionally and physically.
She was just plain tired of trying to figure
out why these people who called themselves
“friends” would lie to her. She debated all
sides of the question, and finally decided that
they were all willing to lie in hopes of being

A Christmas Story ….. Once
upon a time there was an
elderly woman named
Gertrude. (I’ve always won-

wealthy – not just the usual
type of wealthy, but ginormously wealthy. Her
accounts totaled bazillions of dollars. She was
at that place in life where she could feel the
hours and days ticking away. She had no fam-
ily and no real friends to speak of. She had
lots of people who pretended to be her
friends, but they all seemed to want things
that only she could afford. She was generous
and often taken advantage of. She worried
constantly about who should receive her vast
wealth upon her death. She had never formal-
ized her Will. Just before Christmas Gertie de-
cided that she would need to make a decision
soon.
On Christmas morning Harold arrived with a
beautifully wrapped gift. Gertie opened it and
was pleased to see a carved wooden box.
Harold went on and on about how he had
carved it just for her. She thanked him pro-

she barely touched, she picked up a novel that
she had been really enjoying. She was strug-
gling to stay focused when the doorbell rang
yet again. Standing on the porch was Otto,
the little boy who lived next door. He ex-
tended his hand and gave her what appeared
to be a wadded-up kleenex. Tucked inside,
Gertie found this:
Otto carefully ex-

I’m giving them to

TOY DESIGNER—Artist, James Corrigan Jim did extensive research when he volunteered to embellish these toys for the benefit of our Outreach Programs. Each piece that he selected to work on is a masterpiece to be enjoyed by people of any age. James A. Corrigan has been dedicated to the creative art profession in excess of fifty years. James began his art career and education
while in the U.S. Air Force during the early nineteen sixty’s, working as an illustrator. After military service, James worked in Chicago for fifteen years as a Freelance Artist, Commer-cial Artist and Art Director for several large corporations. In the late seventies James decided to make a career change and pursue a new profession, to become a Jeweler. After his education with the Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A.) the Jewelry business of Jas. A. Corrigan, Artisan was established. James stayed in his chosen career, servicing the retail trade and the commercial jewelry industry with custom designed jewelry, repair or restoration requests, including a full line of lapidary ser-vices until his move to Arizona in 2003. His move to Arizona has become a lifelong dream, that turn into an opportunity for exploring and expressing his creative ideas and talents in several mediums (i.e. metal, leather, clay, paint, wood and so on.) Now with his relocation to the foothills of the Superstition Mountains, East of Phoenix in Gold Canyon, Arizona a new vision for the future has started.
You can contact James Corrigan in his desert studio: E-mail: [email protected] Studio: (480) 474-0489—Mobile: (480) 241-1943

So many of our fellow artists have participated in this project with great enthu-
siasm and talent. Pictures have been in every AZ Newsletter for the past few
months to keep you up on what is coming in to us for this fundraiser.
Bring your friends and neighbors to the Holiday Show and visit the Outreach Display to
see them all and purchase their favorite as a gift or a keepsake for themselves.
The proceeds will go to help the programs for life-care residents, special-needs students,
at-risk children and veterans. All our volunteer work is freely given, materials and sup-
plies are a different story—funding is needed to keep them going.
Let’s make this toy sale a win for everyone—happy adults and children—more available

UNIQUE HOLIDAY TOYS
TO SUPPORT ALLIANCE OUTREACH
PROGRAMS
Artist, Bill Weaver has made toy boxes and toys for his grand children, friends and for many fund-raising events.
His generosity has been overwhelming and very successful for the various groups to which he has donated. This year the collaborative effort of artists in the Arizona Art Alliance came together and has pro-duced an amazing collection of “designer” toys to be offered for sale at the Holiday Show.
Bill Weaver is an artist and volunteer with the Alliance’s Desert Artists Extra Special Art program for spe-cial-needs students in the Cave Creek Schools. In addition to making the boxes full of wooden toys for this collaboration with other artists in the Alliance, Bill has put together over thirty “gingerbread” bird houses for the students to paint and decorate this year. He has, in previous years, put together kits for the children to build and decorate their own bird houses. Bill owned Weavers Restaurant Supply for 45 years before retirement. He says he has designed and built half of the restaurants in Phoenix. He has been creating artistic metal sculpture of all kinds since the 1970’s and moved to woodworking in the 1990’s making toys, ducks, decorating gourds and making all types of wood creations.
“I hope the children enjoy the toys as much as I enjoyed making them.” Bill said.
I think the artists who decorated them and those who purchase them will en-joy them too.

Not only has your Board been working very hard to make this a very successful Alliance Holiday Show and Sale for the holidays, we are also working to put on a great display of our Outreach Programs. Your donated 8 x 10 art pieces will be available for sale to benefit the programs. There will be examples of the projects done by our various outreach programs on display so you can see what we have been offering to our students to enrich their lives through art. Caring Thru Art will have framed art from their classes. Op-portunity House will have examples of the work done this past year and Extra Special Art has a few exam-ples of the variety of art projects done at the middle school and high school. All of this, along with the of-fering of the handmade, artist-designed toys and toy boxes for sale to benefit these programs. Be sure to visit the outreach display area and bring your friends. Share the goodwill and the giving spirit of the season and gain an artistic treasure! One more thing. One of Extra Special Art’s middle school classes will be having a workshop especially for them conducted by Artist and Teacher, Nancy Troupe, on Friday morning, December 12th at the workshop area of the show. This life-skills class from our middle school’s special-needs classes and their teachers will tour the show too. They love to visit our shows and to have a new artist work with them! Many thanks to Nancy for being available for them.

Veterans Outreach Program
The Arizona Art Alliance has committed to helping our returning Veterans affected with Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Traumatic Brain Injury, (TBI) by applying the healing and therapeutic quali-
ties art can provide.
Each month we will provide an update from one of the four locations, starting with AAG, followed by
the other three locations.
Started with one location and developed by Rita Goldner, a former Naval Officer complete with a “how
to” manual, has now expanded to four locations. Arizona Artists Guild, (AAG), What’s Happen’n Art
Movement, (WHAM), Mesa Art Guild, (MAL) and the Scottsdale Artists League, (SAL). Thanks in part to
a grant from the Arizona Department of Veteran Services and the passion of our volunteer artists made
the expansion possible. All four locations are achieving positive results as you will see in the following
article from the Arizona Artists Guild.
Each month’s newsletter will have an update from one of the four locations detailing their remarkable
achievements.
Our thanks to the dedicated volunteers helping our Veterans who have given so much!

December 2014 24 “ENRICHING LIFE THROUGH ART”
The Arizona Artists Guild, is proud to be the first addition to the Veteran
Outreach Program. “The Guild has a long history of supporting Veterans, dating
back to World war II, So it was natural to take part in the Veteran Outreach Pro-
gram”, said its President David Bradley.
Our first class was in June 2014 with 17 Veterans registered. Most did not have “known” artistic skills,
but it did not take long to see those hidden skills become visible. Each 4 hour class is taught by a quali-
fied instructor and as many as 7 assistants, assuring the Veterans are given ample support and encour-
agement.
As a Professor of Art at Paradise Valley Community College, I’m extremely pleased by the rapid pro-
gress Veterans have made during the program, both in artistic endeavor and personal development.
Our efforts are rewarded by our Veterans continual praise and assurance as in the following;
“Today’s step-by-step drawing session will help me when I am anxious and frustrated. At times, I have
difficulty maintaining focus. I enjoy coming each month and I’m learning so much!”
“I have learned a lot. I enjoy doing the classes and the instructors. I’m getting and better. I enjoy all
parts of the program. Thank you!
“I try to come every chance I can, helps me overcome my anxiety.”
