Fifth Light:

I am the light of HAPPINESS and JOY. You know me now, and you will never want me to go out. Your life would be dark and dreary without me.

BARTLESVILLE CHAPTER NEWS

DECEMBER 2014 Gail Barnett, Reporter

Well, we had snow in November and then it warmed up again. The weather just doesn’t seem to know what season it is in, but I will take the warmer days any time. We are also into the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. JPS Chapter is busy with many Christmas projects and parties.

MEMBERSHIP CHRISTMAS PARTY: The annual Christmas party was held on Thursday, December 4 at the home of Greg and Michelle Swaney. About 20 JPS members braved the fog to enjoy finger foods and a festive time. Door prizes were won by Kay Reynolds, Karen Lutke, and Sandy Mason. Thanks, Mary Wyatt, to you and your committee for a fun evening. More details are in the Happenings section.

CHRISTMAS PROJECTS: The Bartlesville Chapter has done several Christmas projects again this year. Projects have included filling sacks for the Head Start children and for the Mutual Girls Club. We also help out with presents at a local nursing home. Many of these projects are already completed, and we thank all those who helped make them a success. We have once again helped at the Fantasyland of Lights at Johnstone Park. Sunday, December 14 is Santa’s Cottage at the Frank Phillips Home. Our chapter will be supplying cookies and several members will be working the event. So you can see this is a busy season for the Bartlesville Chapter members. The local board will have a Christmas get together on Wednesday, December 10 at Mary Wyatt’s home.

FUNDRAISING: We had another successful $ 6 Sale recently raising almost $ 4500, and we had a Books Are Fun event the first week of December. We hope our Gift Shop sales will also go well this month. Many thanks to all our workers for our various projects.

Deaths: Mary Joan Fry, retired life member on November 2, 2014 Pat Melton, retired life member on November 4, 2014 Jeanalee Parsons, retired life member on November 24, 2014 Charles Parsons, husband of Jeanalee on July 17, 2014 Eddie Mason, father of member Tami Lewis Illnesses: Michelle Swaney’s father is seriously ill with lung cancer

BARTLESVILLE HAPPENINGS:

From Kathy Shelts: Another great, great nephew, Kollins David was born recently.

Many JPS members and family are planning to attend the Friends of the Frank Phillips’ Home Christmas Party to be held at Woolaroc on December 8. The event had to be moved because the Home has no heat, and they are waiting on funding from the State of Oklahoma.

December 6 will be the Bartlesville Christmas Parade and rumor has it that the Food Network will be there to fill it for inclusion in a future episode of The Pioneer Woman. It is great that Ree Drummond has her show feature various activities and communities around the area.

Lance Lutke, son of Karen and Rod, has a new enterprise in town. He is the co-owner of Marco’s Pizza. So if you are visiting Bartlesville be sure to check it out.

Now some more news on the JPS Member Christmas Party. We had delicious food and miniature ornaments were given to each attendee. We had a gift exchange where we passed gifts around while Cathy McFarland read The Mouse Before Christmas. Every time she said the word mouse, we passed our gifts to the person next to us. She also had three mice going the opposite direction. At the end of the story, each person got to keep the gift they were holding. The three holding the mice got the door prizes. It was fun to see what everyone got – there were lots of snowmen, lots of candy, candles, soup mugs, coffee mugs, cocoa, a warm throw, a Christmas tray, a Christmas framed “Silent Night”, and practical gifts of tape measures and a flashlight. We also had time to visit and catch up on what others have been doing.

It was reported that Grover Shelts had a cousin pass away and for those who remember Richard “Dick” Askew, his obituary was in the paper recently.

Debbie Laroche and Paula Crawford will be singing in the First Baptist Church presentation of A Living Christmas Tree. This is only done every few years. Karen Ward Ungermann used to enjoy singing at this event.

Bettye Williams, Tish Harris, and Gail Barnett will all be attending the Heritage Nursing Home Christmas Party on December 11. You know you are getting old when you and your friends see each other at your parent’s nursing facility.

Jerold and Gail Barnett had a relaxing Thanksgiving in Branson with Andrea, Andy, Philip and Lexi. Saw all the lights at Silver Dollar City, did some shopping, and visited Branson Landing. We will spend Christmas at home with the kids and Gail’s mom.

DECEMBER

Chapter News: The Officer Santa Toy Drive is in full swing this month and some of our toy collection boxes are overflowing with new donated toys from the Pasadena site. The program is hosted by the Pasadena Police Department to help needy children in the community that would otherwise not receive gifts this holiday season. Large boxes were decorated with holiday gift wrap and distributed throughout the central office building. The one near the front entrance is just stuffed with toys, games, and even remote control helicopters. How fun! The time to drop off toys was extended to Friday December 12th. Please help us to make the children of Pasadena’s Christmas wishes come true! This month we were very pleased to make our donation to The Rose Foundation. We raised $3,503 from our PINK OUT events this last October. The check will be presented the week of December 8th. JPS Channel Chapter will have their annual Christmas party on December 9th at the Pasadena Olive Garden. There will be an ornament exchange, too! Appetizers will be provided. It will start at 5:30pm. It should be a good time! Member News: We would also like to wish two of our members a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY this month!

OKLAHOMA CITY CHAPTER

Sharon Eaton, Reporter December 2014

Holiday Greetings from Oklahoma City,

The Oklahoma City chapter wishes everyone a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. Where does the time go? It was just a short time ago that we were in Houston enjoying convention – and now Christmas will soon be here. As we prepare for Christmas, our thoughts always turn to the many blessings we have in our lives. I am always thankful for JPS. JPS has enriched my life in so many ways. I am thankful for the Bartlesville chapter for the love and support they provided while I was a member of that chapter. I am thankful for the Oklahoma City chapter who welcomed me with open arms when I moved to Oklahoma City. And I am thankful for each and every JPS member who supported me each and every time I served as a National Officer. I am also very thankful for each and every person who serves or has served as a National Officer. I love the wonderful giving spirit that is the heart of JPS. Every JPS member should be so proud of their chapter and the impact that chapter has on their local community. Every issue of the JANUES shares so many wonderful things that are being done in the name of the Jane Phillips Society.

Page 15: December 2014 - JPS National

As I have said before, the Oklahoma City chapter is small but we continue to work in our community to make a difference in the lives of those we touch. This month we will be delivering boxes of Christmas cards to an Edmond nursing home for residents to send to their loved ones. We will also be providing food supplies to an Edmond middle school for their backpack program. We wish each and every one of you a blessed Christmas and look forward to seeing you in Montgomery, Texas in June 2015.

DECEMBER 2014

The weather turned COLD quickly! And November was busy with the Altrusa Craft Show and our annual Thanksgiving meal fundraisers. Setting up the Thanksgiving meal was quite a challenge this time, with having to wait for the gas to be turned on and ovens lit for cooking, the water heater pop-off relieving water in the floor, and an early rush for To-Go plates. Here are a few pictures from our Thanksgiving Luncheon fundraiser at the plant:

Joan Gordon and Theresa Packebush worked Willie Harriman kept saying, “I have to go”; but he the To-Go Window kept helping with making mashed potatoes, stocking

the disappearing food chain items, and provided muscle for moving the 20 gallon tea containers.

The line down the hall was friendly and HUNGRY! I caught the end of the ‘eat & run’ group. MANY THANKS TO DARLA AND WILLIE ON THEIR WORK ON THIS GREAT FUND RAISER

By Richard Wagner from Christianity For Dummies

You probably know that Christmas is celebrated on December 25. In the United States, families distribute gifts that Santa Claus left under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning. Many attend church services on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, and later gather for Christmas dinner with extended family.

Christmas is the observance of Jesus’ humble birth to a virgin in a stable in Bethlehem. The holiday also celebrates the events surrounding his birth, such as an angel’s appearance to shepherds, telling them to visit the newborn king.

Although the Church doesn’t consider it the most important Christian holiday, Christmas is certainly the most popular, at least in terms of cultural and social significance.

The early Church, believing that events later in Jesus’s life should be the focus, didn’t even consider it all that significant. What’s more, when Church leaders first discussed observing the birthday of Jesus, some argued against celebrating it like you would another great person in history. Nonetheless, the Church had enough pro-observance support to mark the calendar.

WHAT IS CHRISTMAS?

Page 20: December 2014 - JPS National

It’s that time of year again. JPS is selling Poinsettias. Order forms can be located in your break rooms, or use the attached form. All orders need to be placed by noon, Tuesday, November 25th. Delivery will occur after Thanksgiving.

In addition, it’s time again for the Annual Angel Tree. Christmas trees with ‘Angel’ tags will be located at both the Six Pines and Lakeside offices within the next week. Please take a moment and look at the Angel tags on the Christmas tree in the café. Each Angel has the name of a child with a wish. We have 50 children that we hope to assist this Christmas by providing three gifts for them to open Christmas morning. Each tag has a gift suggestion from each child, so there are 150 tags split between Six Pines & Lakeside. In order to keep track of the children/gifts, there will be a

sheet where you can sign your name so we know who has claimed each Angel. Gifts need to be returned by Friday,

December 12th

. Put the tag on your gift, but keep the ‘Angel’ as a gift from JPS. Flyers with more details can be found in the Café near the tree. Thanks for your support.

Don’t like to shop, JPS will shop for you. Donations can be made via Cash, Check or Credit Card. JPS is a 501c3 organization, all donations, including gifts purchased are tax deductible – just request a tax receipt from Louise Crider, JPS Treasurer.
