Who’s Who at Meadowbrook and Chesdin

s

“Who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it

under a tree.” Roy L. Smith

Holiday Greetings from our General Manager

While we look toward even greater success in 2014, let’s not forget the victories we’ve already shared. In 2013 we grew by over 85 new members! I am certain the spring season will be even better. Lyberty and Adam, our junior golf stars, have had an amazing record this season and as a result, we continue to carve out our niche as “Champions”. Perhaps one of the greatest rewards was receiving the Private Golf Leader Award. This will continue to position us favorably for the months ahead. While all members have access at both Meadowbrook and Chesdin, some stay close to home. If you’re still a “one club” member, I encourage you to take a jaunt across the county and visit your sister club! You are privileged. Not all club memberships include two beautiful private clubs. Bring your family and friends! Several terrific events are planned for our clubs in December. We’ll kick off the season on December 4th with the Grand Illumination at the Meadowbrook clubhouse. Midmonth, enjoy a Friday Night Christmas Buffet with holiday music at the Chesdin Clubhouse. Plan to circle back to Meadowbrook on December 31st to enjoy the annual New Year’s Eve party. There will also be a low-key New Year's celebration at Chesdin, too, for those who want to stay close to home. But that’s not all. Look for other fun, family events throughout the newsletter. To my club family – members and staff – wishing you a prosperous and healthy 2014! ~ Rich Wolkiewicz

HHoliday Greetings from our Chesdin Clubhouse Manager Be sure to take time out from your holiday duties to enjoy a relaxing meal in the dining room. You might even like to invite your guests to join you. For nights you don’t feel like going out or cooking, I hope you’ll stop by to pick up a meal for your family. Our staff will serve you will a smile and treat you courteously. I’ve enjoyed meeting you all, and especially our new Meadowbrook members. It’s been exciting to see all the new faces around the club. If you have any concerns feel free to visit me anytime. I always look forward to visits from our members. You may also contact me via email at [email protected] or phone 804.590.0031 From our entire staff at the Chesdin Clubhouse, we wish you all warm wishes for the holiday season. ~John Bailey

Well friends, we’ve finally made it to another year. I can’t believe December has arrived. Before long it will be spring again and the peak season for golf all over again! But now it’s time to enjoy the holidays.

Throughout December we have lots of activities planned for our members. I encourage each of you to visit the club often to enjoy the festivities with your family and friends. If you have children, you’ll appreciate the Santa Brunch. Look for details in the newsletter.

Not long ago we began discussing plans to build an innovative club presence pairing Meadowbrook and Chesdin. It’s hard to believe the New Year is right around the corner!

The “Meadowbrook Plan” is a combination of four separate “Plans”. The Range Plan, the “Cattail Club”, the Meadowbrook Players Club (MPC) and a Hole in One Club. The total value of the “Meadowbrook Plan” is $540 when priced separately but as a single plan the cost is only $299 (plus sales tax) for a single and $350 (plus sales tax) for a family membership. Members have the option to pay in full or 1/3 in January, 1/3 in February and 1/3 in March. You may charge it on your club account, pay cash, or with a check. YOU NEED ONLY TO COMMIT in December. Payment is not due until January 2014. So call the golf shop in December to commit because in January the price increases $50 and the golf shop credit you receive decreases to $50.

2014 RANGE PLAN

The Range Plan is for members only and does not include guests. A “Single’ membership allows you unlimited range balls for one low price in 2014 for $190 + tax. A “Family” membership allows you and all of the members of your family unlimited range balls for $300 + tax.

2014 CATTAIL CLUB

When you join the “Cattail Club” you or any immediate family members may purchase all “in stock” and special order equipment, shoes, apparel, gloves and golf balls at huge discounts. Members save hundreds of dollars, as much as $50 on golf bags, and shoes and apparel is always at least 30% off MSRP! All prices are as low as any on line or non-green grass retailer. When you join the “Cattail Club” you receive a $100 golf shop credit. “Cattail Club” dues are $225 in 2014.

2014 MEADOWBROOK PLAYERS

CLUB (MPC)

The “Meadowbrook Players Club (MPC) was established in 2005. Since then MPC members have won over $25,000 worth of merchandise from the golf shop! The weekly competitions start in April and continue in to October. The competitions are designed to be played within flights of comparable handicaps. The events begin on Thursday and continue Friday, Saturday and Sunday. MPC members may compete one time on any one of those days. Players receive golf shop merchandise credits for these events.

2014 MCC PLAN HOLE IN ONE CLUB

Any member of the Meadowbrook Plan who scores a Hole in One at either the Meadowbrook course or the Chesdin course receives a beautiful plaque commemorating their accomplishment. There is no purchase of beverages related to this HIO Club.

Chesdin Plan info is available in the golf shop at Chesdin!

On October 27, Clarence “Sheriff” Williams canned a 7 iron on #4 at the Chesdin course. According to witnesses, Terry Byrd, Mike Murrell, Chris Dodson and Bob Colatruglio, Clarence’s ball cleared the hazard, bounced towards the green and tumbled in to the hole for his Ace. Clarence declared he played it that way because the wind would have otherwise kept the ball from its ultimate destination. You can’t argue with success.

RAMS On November 7, a gallant group of RAMS gathered to battle the Lakers from Jefferson-Lakeside in an attempt to gain the lead in our series. Alas, the Lakers prevailed by a 16 to 14 total; however, the series will be renewed at J-L in the spring, and Dave Ellett has vowed that we WILL even the series on their home course. The RAMS Celebration of Our City Champions was held on Friday, November 22. Thanks to all RAMS who supported this endeavor, and special thanks to Carrol Cox, Ben Thorp, Dave Ellett, and Bill Smiley for their work in putting the program together. Also, a special thanks to Terry Hennigan for his hard work in preparing for this event until medical issues sidelined him temporarily. Registrations for the spring Pinehurst Trip (May 4-7) are going slow so far, and we expect to see a rapid increase after New Year. Howard advises that RAMS should not use the Pinehurst trip as an excuse for not attending the Garden Party at MCC on May 3. Remember that our next dinner meeting is January 22, so clear the date on your calendar now. The slate of nominees for the next Executive Board and the election will be accomplished at this meeting as well as a few other business items. Finally, the RAMS wish all of our MCC members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We hope to see you at a number of the seasonal events at MCC that most certainly will add to your holiday happiness. ~Jim Hufschmitt

Pinehurst Trip Oh, the FUN they had!

CITY CHAMPIONS

at Meadowbrook

A large turnout of RAMS, guests and celebrities filled Meadowbrook on November 22nd to honor our city champions: Lyberty Anderson and Adam Ball. Guest Speakers included Lee Coble (President- VSGA), Giff Breed (President – Pros, Inc.), Bobby Wadkins (Sr. PGA), John Rollins (PGA Pro), as well as Lyberty and Adam. This event celebrated not only our Champions, but also a new emphasis on Junior Golf by the RAMS and MCC. ~Jim Hufschmitt

Club Announcements

A Message from tthe BBoard In 2012 a Smoke Advisory Committee was chartered by the MCC Board of Directors and formed from our fellow members. Their objective was to investigate how the MCC smoking policy might be improved to provide the best County Club experience for ALL of our members. This study was exceptionally thorough and encompassed an examination of the policies at other Richmond area Country Clubs and interview with every major member group and organization within MCC. After completing this exhaustive study, the Committee made the following recommendations to the MCC Board of Directors last spring:

1. That two Smokeeters be installed in the upstairs Lounge area adjacent to the Bar, and one in the downstairs Grill Room. Four Smokeeters are being donated to MCC by St. Augustine’s Church. One device will remain in reserve for future contingencies. The cost to transfer and install these units will be less than $1,000. These units also will require a $1,000 annual maintenance fee if they remain in service. It is recommended that the Smokeeters be tested over a 3 to 6 month period. The MCC Board of Directors will then make a determination if they are a viable solution to smoke cessation in the upstairs Bar, Lounge, and downstairs Grill areas.

2. That a simple swinging door be installed upstairs between the Bar and Meadowbrook Room at an approximate cost of $2,000.

3. That during special functions (dinner dances or other large events in the dining room area) the Grill Room (with bartender on duty) be designated as the only smoking area in the clubhouse.

4. That if the Smokeeters are not deemed successful, a project will be added to the Capital Funds Project list to erect a wall/window between the upstairs Bar and the adjacent Lounge area. This would be done according to priority and availability of funds. The approximate cost will be $11,000. If this is done, smoking will be allowed in the Lounge adjacent to the Bar during all events.

Initially, the MCC Board of Directors voted and approved Recommendation No. 1 and Smokeeters were installed in The Lounge adjacent to the Bar and in the Grill. The Board also communicated and conducted a six month test period to determine their smoke eliminating effectiveness in these areas. At this point it is evident that the Smokeeters are not effective, and the Board has decided to institute Recommendation No. 3 effective December 1, 2013. During special functions and other large events in the Dining Room area, the Grill Room (with bartender on duty) is designated as the only smoking area in the clubhouse. In addition, outdoor heaters have been purchased and will be running on the upstairs deck during these events to provide a comfortable alternative for our fellow members who enjoy smoking. The Board will continue to monitor the effectiveness of this policy and report to members on a timely basis. No set of rules can replace the value we gain by the use of common courtesy. We appreciate your ongoing consideration and appreciation for the rights of all our members. Thank you. Meadowbrook Board of Directors

Meadowbrook Club will be closed January 1st – January 9th

We will reopen on January 10th
