Happy Holidays from CAUSE!Season's Greetings!

January 25th: Visions for LA with former Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner [Recap | Video |Photos]

We kicked off the new year with the launch of our mayoral candidate series, Visions forLA. Esteemed leaders of the API community attended these forums and were ableparticipate in question and answer sessions that allowed them to not only get to know themayoral candidates on a more personal level, but to find out how they would impact the APIcommunity in Los Angeles. Austin Beutner was the first candidate to kick-off our series.

February 10th: Women in Power Annual Luncheon 2012 [Video | Photos]

Our Women in Power Annual Luncheon was our big event this month. Held at theCalifornia Club on February 10th, over 100 people attended this elegant event, whichfeatured a powerhouse panel of women leaders: Anne Shen Smith, now President andChief Executive of the Southern California Gas Company/Sempra Energy; Mimi Song,CEO of Mimi Song Realty Group; Maria Contreras-Sweet, Executive Chairwoman andFounder at ProAmerica Bank. Additionally, U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu, StateBoard of Equalization Member Michelle Park Steel, and State Senator CarolLiu served as co-chairs for the event.

February 18th: CAUSE/Arsalyn SAVE Youth Forum [Photos]

This year, we partnered with Arsalyn for the Student Advocates for Voter Empowerment(SAVE) Youth Forum, which was held on February 18th at UCLA. The day longconference invited over 300 students from various San Gabriel Valley High Schools toattend and participate in a variety of panels, presentations and activities geared towardyouth civic engagement. We invited LAPD Deputy Chief Terry Hara to be the event'sopening speaker, in addition we also organized two panels: the Legislative Staffer Paneland the Young Electeds Panel. The Legislative Staffer Panel featured Mike Fong fromMayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office and Marisol Salguero from Councilmember Ed Reyes'office and the Young Electeds Panel featured Mayor of Diamond Bar Ling-LingChang, Councilmember of Campbell Evan Low, City of Rosemead Mayor Steven Ly,and City of Placentia Mayor Jeremy Yamaguchi.

March 9th: Carrie Gan, CAUSE's new Executive Director

April 26th: 19th Annual CAUSE Dinner [Video | Photos]

On April 26th, we held our 19th Annual Dinner, an event which honored individuals andorganizations for leadership and legacies that have enhanced the civic participation of theAsian Pacific American (APA) community. The following leaders were honored:

Edwin Lee, Mayor, San Francisco, was honored with the Norman Y. Mineta LegacyAwardTom Mars, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, WalmartU.S., was honored with the Law and Corporate Leadership Award

May 18th: Voter Registration and Dim Sum Reception for the Primary Election [Photos]

This year, we were hard at work with voter registration/outreach efforts. One of our projectswas working with the Grand Plaza Senior Center for a two-part voter information sessionfor both the Primary and General Elections.The free educational sessions were gearedtoward Chinese-speaking adults and the elderly who were seeking easily accessibleinformation about voter registration and voter re-registration, in addition to absentee ballotinformation, ballot propositions and other information regarding the election.The sessionswere conducted in both English and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin). At this event weregistered close to 50 individuals vote and re-register to vote.

June 15th: CAUSE Leadership Academy Kick-off Luncheon [Video | Photo]

This summer we were very fortunate to induct a very intelligent and talented group ofstudents into our prestigious Leadership Academy Internship. For eight weeks, theseinterns worked in their placed legislative offices and produced a group project booklet onredistricting, which can be viewed and downloaded here.

June 25th: Interns meet with Judge Dolly Gee

The interns had a wonderful opportunity to meet with Federal Judge Dolly Gee. Fromtouring her own personal chambers to talking about her time during her judgeship, theinterns gained invaluable wisdom.

July 16: Interns meet with Judge Ronald Lew The interns were able to meet with Judge Ronald Lew, the first Chinese-American federaljudge appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987. In this candid and heart-to-heart roundtable discussion, Judge Lew shared about his active involvement in the Chinese Americancommunity, and how he encouraged them to follow their dreams.

July 16th: Interns tour Little Saigon The interns took a personal tour of Little Saigon in Orange County, courtesy of Tammy Trinh, from

Senator Lou Correa's office. Making a connection with one of Little Saigon's most respectednewspaper agencies, the interns were able to see the hard work and dedication the editors andstaff had to put in to run such a successful agency. The tour allowed interns to see howimportant community involvement was to the surrounding businesses in the area.

July 23rd: LAPD Deputy Chief Terry Hara shown with the interns at LAPD headquarters

The interns felt inspired by LAPD Deputy Chief Terry Hara as he shared about the exciting, but attimes, dangerous experiences he had while being an undercover police officer in the LAPD. Haragave the interns a personal tour of the police department.

July 23rd: Interns discussing future career paths with California Community FoundationEVP and COO John Kobara

California Community Foundation EVP and COO John Kobara met with the interns and gaveadvice in all the career choices of law, politics, non-profit, and business. Kobara, who has been

involved in all of these areas to an extent, shared his secret to his incredible time managingskills. Kobara gave not only lessons on career choices, but lessons on how to live a happy andsatisfying life.

July 23rd: Interns visit Chinese American Citizen Alliance's (CACA)

The topic of redistricting was the main focal point with CACA respected member Winston Wu. Wushared his extensive knowledge of redistricting that he had documented for the past fewdecades. Wu proved to be an invaluable resource and kind supporter of the CAUSE interns. Theinterns left with gained knowledge, and an appreciation for the what CACA did in the ChineseAmerican community.

July 31st: Interns visit Walt Disney Studios The interns were give an personal tour of Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. Disney Attorney, EdLew shared about his passion for his profession, and what it was like to work for sucha successful corporation like Disney. Much to the interns delight, they were taken to the

animation hall of fame where they were able to see the original sketches of many of the belovedanimated Disney films they had grew up with.

August 2nd: NextGen Project Reception 2012 [Recap | Video | Photos] Set at the Jonathan Club in Downtown Los Angeles, the NextGen Project Receptionbrought together the next generation of leaders and veteran professionals in the realms ofbusiness and law to network and learn from one another. Featured, was a star-studdedpanel of individuals who have broken through the glass ceiling as API leaders in the field oflaw: the Honorable Dolly M. Gee, U.S. District Court Judge, Central District of California;Kenneth K. Lee, Partner at Jenner & Block LLP and former Associate White HouseCounsel; and Debra Wong Yang, Partner at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher and former U.S.Attorney.

August 6th to August 7th - Leadership Academy interns visit Sacramento: Interns gota personal tour of the California State Senate Floor by Senator Lou Correa. The Senatestaff was kind enough to welcome the CAUSE interns with a personal message on theirannouncement board.

September 18th: OCEAN Entrepreneurship Series presented by CAUSE [Presentation |Video | Photos]

CAUSE partnered with the Organization of Chinese Entrepreneurs Advisory Network(OCEAN) for an Entrepreneurship Series that was kicked off by Brian Sun, Partner at JonesDay, on September 18th. Sun gave a presentation entitled "Trade Secrets, EconomicEspionage, and Other Perils of Doing Business in China." The presentation is available inits entirety here.

CAUSE Partnered with APALC for its "Your Vote Matters! 2012" campaign

Starting in September and working up until Election Day, we worked with the Asian PacificAmerican Legal Center (APALC) for its "Your Vote Matters! 2012" civic engagementcampaign. This program was launched to empower and mobilize community members toexercise their voice at the ballot box.

October 1st: A Dinner Conversation with Bill Schneider [Video | Photos]

In October, we held an election forum entitled, A Dinner Conversation with BillSchneider on the 2012 Campaigns. This event featured a former senior CNN politicalanalyst and his perspectives on important issues in the General Election.

October 12th: CAUSE Welcomes Newest Interns

We accepted four international students from University of Southern California's (USC) SolePrice School of Public Policy's Graduate Program into its newly-developed ExecutiveInternship Program. The four students hail from different parts of China and are interested instudying different areas in public policy. They are listed below by name, hometown,previous educational institution, and graduate focus:

October 17th: Voter Registration and Dim Sum Reception for the General Election[Photos] Over 100 individuals came out to our second voter information session on the GeneralElection at the Grand Plaza Senior Center. We saw familiar faces from our last event,which covered the Primary Elections, and we were delighted to see new faces. Weregistered and re-registered about 50 individuals at this event.

December 1st: CAUSE Honored with NAAAP-SoCal's Non-Profit Leadership Award
