December Gardening Calendar Houseplants
Weeks 1-4: Water houseplants with tepid water. Cold tap water may shock plants.
Weeks 1-4: Be sure newly purchased indoor plants are well protected for the trip home.
Exposure to icy temperatures for even a few moments may cause injury.
Weeks 1-4: Overwintering geraniums like bright light and cool temperatures. Keep soils on the
dry side.
Weeks 1-4: On cold nights, move houseplants back from icy windows to prevent chilling injury.
Weeks 2-4: Holiday poinsettia plants do best with sun for at least half the day and night
temperatures in the 50's or 60's. Keep plants away from drafts, registers and radiators and
let the soil should dry only slightly between thorough waterings. Be sure to punch holes in
decorative foil wraps to prevent soggy soil conditions.
Weeks 1-4: Hairspray works well to keep seed heads and dried flowers intact on wreaths and
arrangements.
Weeks 1-4: If you plan to have a live Christmas tree, dig the planting hole before the ground
freezes. Mulch and cover the backfill soil and the planting hole to keep them dry and
unfrozen. When you get the tree, store it outdoors in a cool, shady, windless area until the last
minute and mulch the roots to prevent cold injury. Don't allow the tree's roots to become dry
and spray the needles with an anti-transpirant to reduce moisture loss. Set the tree up in your
coolest room. Don't keep the tree indoors for more than one week and plant outdoors promptly.
Weeks 1-4: Be sure the root zones of azaleas and rhododendrons are thoroughly mulched. Any
organic material will do, but mulches made from oak leaves, shredded oak bark, or pine needles
are preferred.
Weeks 1-3: Christmas trees hold needles longer if you make a clean, fresh cut at the base and
always keep the trunk standing in water.
Weeks 1-3: Only female holly trees bear the colorful berries. There must be a male tree growing
nearby for pollination, if fruits are desired.
Miscellaneous
Week 1: Apply mulches to bulbs, perennials and other small plants once the ground freezes.
Week 1: All power equipment should be winterized before storage. Change the oil and lubricate
moving parts. Either drain fuel systems or mix a gas stabilizing additive
into the tank.
Week 1: Clean and oil all garden hand tools before storing for winter.
Week 1: If you feed rabbits corn or alfalfa, they may leave fruit tree
bark unharmed.
Weeks 1-3: Hollies may be trimmed now and the prunings used in
holiday decorations.

It's almost time to start making those gardening resolutions.
You may miss the garden you had last year...or miss the garden you wish
you had.
But winter's respite is not the time for regrets. Instead, make good use of
the off-season. Grab pencil, paper, gardening magazines and seed
catalogs, and make your dream garden a reality!
Don't worry about trying all these ideas or using them in order or in the
winter months. Springtime's arrival in your area and the scope of your
plans will guide you to the ones most useful to you.
Set aside a large-format wall calendar just for gardening notes. Use it for goals, several-step garden
projects and timely reminders. Be sure an fill in our Lake Area Master Club’s Dates for 2013!! We
have a lot of fun and educational meetings scheduled!
Inventory your seed stash. Improperly stored seeds may have dried out and should be discarded. Be
sure to store seeds in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.
Review plant information in catalogs and gardening magazines. Resolve to try something new this
year, and decided now where it will go in your garden.
When ordering seeds or plants via mail order, fill out the order form (even if you intend to call in your
order or use the Internet). This way, you are prepared and the process goes quickly. Place orders
early, before the companies get busy. These get filled faster, plus you can get exactly what you want,
thus avoiding substitutions and rain checks.
Plan new beds and borders on paper. The drawing doesn't have to be sophisticated or perfect, though
you should aim to make it to scale.
For new plants, always research "mature plant size." Of course, results may vary in your garden, but it's
still important to know what to expect to allow for enough space.
If you're planning a big garden installation this year—a water garden, a gazebo, a pergola—research
what's involved. Also, line up contractors in late winter (before they book up).
Feed developing seedlings with half-strength plant food every week or so. Proper care means more
robust plants, improving their chances of survival when they finally move outdoors.
Make compost! It's easy and it's free...and your plants will adore it. The most successful piles are in a
sunny spot, about 3 feet square. Keep compost slightly damp and stir often.
Enjoy making plans for 2013!
