The crisis: a blessing in disguise?Raquel Có[email protected]

Peter Kukielski is perhaps themost unknown member of ourtop management, yet he is theman in charge of our global Min-ing operations leading a team ofover 40,000 colleagues world-wide. He joined the Group inDecember 2008, in the middleof the global economic crisis. Inthis interview, Peter tells us howthe downturn has affected ourmines, as well as our Group ingeneral: “The economic crisis hasbeen, in many respects, a bless-ing in disguise: it has forced usto do things that we were oth-erwise too busy to think aboutduring the ‘supercycle’ in whichwe appeared to be until lastyear. Now, with the benefit ofa little bit of time, we can ensurethat everything we do goingforward is done in a more meas-ured way, with increased focuson risk management.”

In the steelmaking busi-ness, the crisis has led toa 50% reduction of ourglobal production. Is this thecase in mining?

“No, it is not. Last year, in ourwholly owned iron ore mines we produced 37 million tons, and this figure will be repeated in 2009.The reason for this stable production level is that we direct a lot of these volumes to external cus-tomers, which in effect provides a hedge against raw material price volatility.

What are the main challenges you foresee for our mining operations in the comingmonths?

The main challenges that we face will be associated with: Maintaining the momentum of the cost reduction programmes Ensuring that our people are properly engaged, andMost importantly: ensuring that, through this period of uncertainty and extreme austerity, we

focus more than ever before on safety. There is no cost in safety. There is only a cost in not beingsafe, because every accident or injury that we have, every fatality that occurs, gives rise to im-measurable costs.

Focus on the job and get it done. That is the best way to making sure that each and every one ofus stays safely on the job.

How do you see the future of our mining operations in ArcelorMittal?I see a tremendous future for mining – that is why I am here! ArcelorMittal is an incredible com-

pany, with extraordinary values, and we have a very strong base on which to build a substantialmining business. In fact, the goal of this company is to produce 75% of the iron ore we need to fillour company’s needs, not only through supplying internal operations, but by supplying global mar-kets.”

Editorial of CEOBefore the year’s end it is traditional to look back. I have been in Ostrava and among you for the

last few months, dear colleagues, so I would like to share some personal notes with you.I like my work. It gives me an opportunity to do many things I enjoy. Managing a business like

ArcelorMittal Ostrava means among other things working with people – employees and their fam-ilies, society, authorities, customers, suppliers etc. And I seek to make a difference in the lives ofthe people.

I like the place I live at. I could not have asked for a better place: a nice house, good surroundingswith a lot of greenery around, close to a church, which is very important for me and my wife, andabove all a wonderful set of neighbours – though we do not speak we still smile at each other.

I like the people of Ostrava. The last five months that I have spent in Ostrava has been a pleas-ant surprise. Earlier impression was that people here are quite reserved and not so open. Withinthe short period of time I have met a large number of people who are probably some of thefriendliest I have come across anywhere.

I like the Czech cuisine. Being a non-vegetarian gives me an opportunity to taste all that it canoffer. I have also discovered that there is no better way to start a meal than by taking a shot ofslivovitz. And I certainly am in the process of starting to like the Czech wines. Of course, at thesame time I still enjoy the Indian cuisine at home prepared by my wife.

I like volunteering. I developed this habit as a university student working with the Sisters ofCharity founded by the Late Mother Theresa of Calcutta. In Ostrava my wife and I have found

a Catholic organization which works for the poor people where we try to spend 2 – 3 hours onSundays. And I promote the concept of volunteering which is a very noble activity to identify withcauses dear to the community.

I like Christmas. It is my favourite holiday both when I lived in India and later on in Europe. It isa festival of social and religious significance and we as Christians give significance to both. Thereare many pleasant memories about Christmas starting from my childhood: decorating the house, constructing a crib, joining carol groups and visiting houses of people, midnight church service withmelodious Christmas carols, good food and so on. This year I and my family will be celebratingChristmas here in Ostrava for the first time.

As this is the last issue of our in-house magazine this year, I would like to thank you all for thepatience and support you have shown to get through one of the most difficult years in the historyof the company. My favourite proverb says that every cloud has a silver lining. I am confident thatwe will come out of this stronger and that working together we can build a good future for thiscompany.

I wish you, your families and all your dear ones to spend a wonderful Christmas. May the NewYear bring about happiness and prosperity both for you, your families and for the company.

Call CEO Line 4444Before morning shifts at weekends the bus connection from the South gate to the Medium Sec-

tion Mill departs at 5.30, but it is exactly when a number of buses only arrive at the bus stop. Whydoes the bus connection not start five minutes later (at 5.35), which is the arrangement e.g. forthe night shift?

Our company has had many internal discussions as well as discussions with the public trans-portation companies to organize changes in timetables of public and company bus transport thatwill become effective as from December 13, 2009. We have taken into consideration the connec-tion between various means of public transport and the connection to company bus transport aswell as the time when individual shifts begin. The respective bus will be leaving for all the shifts atweekends and for the night shifts on weekdays in 32nd minute, i.e. after all the public buses havearrived.

In the in-house magazine I read about the support that our company provides to the voluntaryfire fighters in Ostrava Radvanice, which I appreciate. However, the company professional firebrigade also needs various technical aids and vehicles in their day-to-day activities as well asequipment for their fire station. I know that all costs a lot of money and now we need to econo-mize, but in spite of that I would like to know whether some repairs or modernization are going totake place.

We do try to continuously modernize the equipment and improve the working environment forour employees. But apart from that, within our corporate responsibility activities we also need tosupport the community in which we operate. Unfortunately, this year all such activities have beenaffected by the global economic crisis, but in spite of that we have been able to fulfil a significantpart of the requirements of our plants. By the end of this year we will have spent around one mil-lion crowns on repairs at operation 63 – Fire Brigade. The 2010 plan includes repairs worth morethan 4 million crowns for operation 63. Of course, all will depend on whether our company willdo well in the months to come.

100 Minutes For Life Results: 240 litres of bloodThat is the amount our employees gave during October. A total of 514 people from

ArcelorMittal Ostrava and Frýdek-Místek got engaged in the project. Though most ofthem were regular blood donors we are happy that it also includes people who gave bloodfor the first time in their lives. Check out what some of our blood donors said aboutblood giving.

Jiří Čech from Power plant (He has given blood 106 times) – awarded Golden cross of thirdclass:

„People who do not go to give blood should think what is really important in life so that theydo not wait till they are not able to give blood anymore. Maybe they will be sorry then that theydid not help at the time when they could.“

Petr Pilát, technician of electric machinery (He has given blood 185 times) – awarded GoldenCross of second class:

„It was a very beneficial event and I am happy that the company I work for helps the donors inmany ways. Even your dearest ones -children, parents may need it (blood) and it always does nothave to be available. I know that the times are tough and people are willing to do little without anyfinancial incentives but the feeling of voluntary help to an anonymous person is also not bad andmoreover it gives you satisfaction.“

Petr Neuwirth -Technical office - Power Plant (He has given blood 135 times) – awardedGolden Cross of second class:

„I got engaged into the 100 minutes for Life project right at the beginning of October. I thinkthat such an event could run regularly since blood is always needed. During such collective eventsmany new donors among our employees join.“

Martin Kubáň from Blast Furnaces (He has given blood 118 times) – awarded Golden Cross ofthird class:

„I gave blood for the first time in 1989. Back then my son was born. My wife had complicationsduring the childbirth and she was given transfusion. She asked me whether I could give blood. Andsince I did not die after giving blood or my arm fell off I continued with some breaks up to now.One never knows when he or she will need blood or some parts of it. I was sitting on Friday at theBlood Centre when a phone rang at the surgery. When the nurse hung up she started talking sadlythat on the other side of the line (Hospital in Olomouc) there is a patient after chemotherapy whois waiting for a transfusion of white corpuscles. If he does not die till Monday the only suitabledonor will come on Monday and the will take them from him and send them by air to the patient. But there is no guarantee that everything will turn out well. In such a moment one can realize thatgiving blood is not only a great-today-I-have-a-day-off event but that on the other side thereare really sick and injured people. And message shall I give to the others? I can only say that theblood giving does not hurt and that people do not die from it. You will get coffee, wafer and a mealvoucher. And down inside of you you will have a good feeling that you did something for others.“

Radim Langer from Steel plant - ZPO2 (He has given blood 225 times) – awarded Golden Crossof first class:

„I think that every event that brings new donors into the Blood Centre has a sense. The 100minutes for life event was well presented in media and also supported by personal examples anddefinitely fulfilled its purpose. Of course, certain people can not give blood for health reasons. Buta healthy person does not have to be afraid of it. It is a feeling that can be compared to a bloodtaking during the preventive medical check up. If you do not try it do not say that you will nothandle it. Unfortunately the commonplace: „You never know when you will need it“ still holds true.

Investment Director Anoop Nair: First foreign donor in OstravaAt the end of the 100 minutes for life campaign one foreign donor joined the Czech

ones from ArcelorMittal. It was Investment director Anoop Nair from ArcelorMittalOstrava. He also happens to be the very first foreign blood donor in Ostrava.

„We have seen a foreign blooddonor at our Blood centre for thefirst time. We are happy thatthere is such a person in our mul-ticultural city whose example canencourage others,“ appreciatedAnoop’s attitude NaděždaKalužová from the Blood Centreof the Teaching Hospital in Os-trava.

As we were wondering howAnoop got to blood giving andwhy he gave blood just in ourcountry we asked him a fewquestions:

What made you give blood? One of my close friends had an

accident back in India and heneeded blood very badly. ThenI had given blood for the first

time. But I did not continue with it. And now I decided to change it. Why did you get engaged in the campaign 100 minutes for life?I found it as a very noble cause. I live in this country, take all the good of this country and the

people around me and I couldn’t find any other way to contribute back to the nation and peopleI am living with. I would like to do a lot, but a lack of time and language constraints restricts mefrom delivering what I want. So this is one method I saw as a good, yet simple solution for my per-sonal satisfaction.

What message would you give to those who have not had the courage to give blood yet?At the entrance of the hospital, there is a tree which shows the sponsors, and ArcelorMittal

ranks among the top. If they were to draw up a statistics on company wise engagement, we caneasily be on the top by the sheer volume of potential donors we have and we should achieve it.

In fact I am also proud to say that after my experience, I came back and spoke to my depart-ment about the same.

My colleagues found it so appealing that they also decided to give blood. I am very proud ofthem and we are scheduling a term when all our department could visit the Blood Centre. There isreally no need to fear. Try it too.

We gave new beds to children in Radvanice In early November the representatives of our company presented new beds for

children to Sun Flower kindergarten in Ostrava Radvanice. The previous ones did notcomply with sanitary standards any more that is why the community officials ofRadvanice and Bartovice appreciated this help at a value of 115 thousand crowns verymuch.

„We want to thank the man-agement of ArcelorMittal Ostravafor the gift they gave our kinder-garten. We appreciate that theytake care of the children in ourcommunity,“ said during the pres-entation ceremony mayor of Rad-vanice and Bartovice, BřetislavBlažek. One of the main benefitsof the beds is their low weight, ease manipulation and most of allthe fact that thee meet sanitarystandards.

Nevertheless it is not our firsthelp to children of Radvanice. Last year our company gave this kindergarten a financial gift worthof 300 thousand crowns. That was used for furnishing new interior that even thanks to our newbeds shines with colours.

We got even feedback from abroad The news about our 100 minute campaign made it even to the intranet and internet pages of

our Group. The ArcelorMittal TV blog read e.g. these recognitions: Great idea. We also create campaigns for blood donation here in ArcelorMittal Monlevade, Brazil.

The initiative from Czech Republic will be an inspiration for us.Lukas Vilela, ArcelorMittal Monlevade, Brazil„Very smart.“ Mary Carey, Corporate Communications, Luxembourgthe comic is a great idea!

Team cooperation yielded hundreds of million savings. Lower SO2 emissions, higher caloricity, lower coal consumption, fewer operational

complications and a cost saving at a value of hundreds of millions crowns. This capturesin short the project that Management Committee assessed as one in four best projectsof Performance Excellence within the Environment category. Let’s take a look at it.

The project dates back to 1993. Back then the management of our company started dealingwith the issue how to ensure supply of electricity for production and meet the legal emission lim-its. Both power plant and research and development experts were involved to resolve this prob-lem.

„There were several options. First to invest about 200 million crowns into desulphuring technol-ogy or purchase electricity externally or to find a suitable solution on its own,“ explains the back-ground of the project Jiří Novotný from Power plant. Out of all options the last one was chosen asthe most viable.

In 2006 a team of specialists from Power plant, R&D and Investment department was set upand they started dealing with the issue intensively. They decide to test fuels with lower sulphurcontent and higher caloricity. And that it was not an easy thing confirm the words of Head ofheating plant Karel Doběš: „The low sulphur coal made us often all kinds of complications e.g. sedi-mentation of boilers with slag. That is why we had to idle the boilers and clean up the sedimentswhich caused complications. And it was necessary to eliminate them. Especially our colleaguesfrom R&D helped us a lot. Thanks to their extensive experience we managed to identify certainqualities of coal which caused the sediments and thanks to this we solved the problem,“

However, the cooperation with the boiler operators themselves was very crucial. The coal test-ing was carried out under regular operation of the heating plant and not in the quite surrounding ofa laboratory as we might expect. The plant management has to ensure that the testing will notendanger every day production of electricity fro individual plants. „We had to deal with logisticproblems regarding coal storage. But it also required an enormous flexibility and willingness ofpeople to do things beyond the call of duty often on weekends, holidays and without a financialreward,“ evaluates the project Karel Doběš. „The remarks and feedback from boiler operators werealso invaluable which they provided us with during the testing. This project would never be a suc-cess without their help,“ adds Radomír Javorský from Project management.

The team has tested a total of 16 different types of coal. And the results are really pleasing. Thanks to enormous effort and the cooperation between power plant, R&D, and investment de-partment suitable fuel that will meet SO2 emission limits till 2013 was found. And without the ne-cessity to invest 200 millions into desulphuring technology. Which is at the times of the presenteconomic crisis really unique solution which deserves recognition. „Moreover we can six suitabletypes of coal in all from different suppliers. Thanks to this we are not dependent on the price andwe can afford to bargain,“ completes the account of individual benefits Jiří Novotný.

Congratulations to the whole team for their great cooperation and we wish them the best ofluck to achieve the first place!

Locomotives at Transportation have a new reflective dress In early December the Transportation plant started the second stage of safety

paintings for locomotives. „In the first stage we tried the safety painting on a selected locomotive and now we added re-

flective features. This measure improves substantially the visibility of locomotives from all sidesand especially when it is lit from different lights,“ explains the main benefits of the project AlanDorňák, Transportation plant Director. Six more locomotives will be equipped in the same way. Inthe future the plant is going to paint with the reflective features all the locomotives of our com-pany. Big credit for this enhancement goes to the proposal and implementation team namely to JiříJaníček, Pavel Dušenka, Lumír Kocián and Karel Křibský.

Plant 2 succeeded to complete first stage of roof repairs at Foundry It is a common knowledge that the roof makes the fundamental and important part of

any building. That applies to the roofs of our operation halls twice as much since ourproduction and safety of our employees depends on them. Therefore in early Octobera reconstruction of the Foundry roof was commenced.

„The condition of particular roofs is continuously monitored and based on the inspection check-ups we do necessary repairs. When the results of several check-ups showed that the roofs at theFoundry are in unsatisfactory conditions we asked the Safety management committee for permis-sion to go ahead with the repairs. And we got the green light,“ explains the situation before thereconstruction Václav Kubiczek from Plant 2.

The repairs started at the first part of the Foundry’s roof and that is at in the hall of little greycast iron. And what did the repairs involve? „The original concrete blocks were replaced with newroofing - both sided coated sheets. We also replaced the defective wire glass at roof lights,“ saycoordinators of the repair works Antonín Novotný and Lubomír Matoušek from Plant 2.

Reconstruction was carried out under regular operation that is why a big attention was drawn tosafety measures. „We drew up technological procedures of individual works to ensure safety ofemployees working at heights but also those working on the ground. We also had a static assess-ment of the scaffoldings developed to prevent potential accidents,“ comments on the safetymeasures Michal Smolík from Plant 2.

In spite of the demanding safety measures and not always favourable weather conditions theroof covering 1700 m2 was repaired over just eight weeks,“ evaluates the result Václav Kubiczekfrom plant 2.

It was the first major reconstruction of the roof at operation No. 25 - Foundry. Nevertheless itwill continue to be one of the key priorities of this plant in the years to come.

Myths and Truths from Health & Safety Effective from November we are going to post within our H&S column some H&S myths. In the

table below you can check out the first ones.November 2009Myth -Of course, that the work with this chemical is safe. We always do it like this. Truth -Some deceases caused by chemicals can develop in the course of several years. If you are

to a great extent exposed to certain chemical it is time for a change.

University students touring the mill University students visit our

company every year in order togain some experience from prac-tise. This year it is no different. InOctober students of Safety engi-neering of the Technical Universityof Ostrava paid us a visit. This timetheir footsteps led to Rolling mill, engineering shop and foundry. Priorto the tour the students could seea presentation focused on H&S.“We showed the students how wefulfil our duties in H&S required bylaw and also those above the law,”said Jiří Michálek, H&S Director.

The representatives of the school appreciated the tour very much. Especially its practical benefitas students could get an inspiration for their semester papers or thesis.

We reduce noise pollution in the vicinity of Bartovice railway station Even at times of current economic crisis our company continues in investment

projects. One of them is a construction of anti-noise walls in Ostrava-Bartovice. „The main objective of the project is to reduce the level of noise pollution in the vicinity of Bar-

tovice railway station so that the Regional Sanitary Authority prolongs our permit to operate rail-way transport,” explains the reasons for the investment Petr Kraina from Construction preparationand implementation department.

We have managed to achieve this by a construction of three anti noise barriers which are in op-eration since mid November. The shortest one is 28m long and the longest wall stretches to152m. The reaming wall number four will be built in 2010.

The anti noise barriers are located at the rail yard of the Bartovice railway station. That servesfor the handover and subsequent shunting of trains that regularly come to our company. “Most ofthe provisions of material, stock or spareparts for our company arrives by these rail-way tracks. As there is a residential area inits vicinity we came up with a measure thatsignificantly brings down the noise burdenfor local residents,” says Kraina.

The whole investment was also carriedout in a record breaking time. All three wallswere built in just one month. The big creditfor this goes to excellent cooperation of theexternal company and operation 570 whenensuring lock-outs on the individual tracks. The walls were built by GEPA Ltd. from Zlínand the total costs accounted for CZK 4.5mil.

October employees of the month Also in October our company honoured those employees who contributed by their

extraordinary commitment to innovative solutions or better safety at workplace. The ceremonial meeting with employees was attended by COO Josef Buryan, Head of Training

and GEDP, Veronika Muroňová, Director of Blast furnaces Jan Haščin and TU leader RůženaZdražilová.

COO gave a short overview of the current situation at the company and thanked all for goodcooperation. He appreciated the diversity of employees of the month who ranged from long termseasoned employees up to young workers full of vigour and bright ideas. „Only the cooperationbetween these groups of employees can bring our company good results,“ emphasised Buryan.„We believe that the today’s recognition is not only acknowledgement of their performance butalso a motivation for tasks to come,“ added Muroňová.

How does Group Engineer program continue? In the past issues of our magazine we informed you about Group Engineers program.

Currently it involves 153 engineers. Nine of them work at ArcelorMittal Ostrava. Let’shave a look how this program was affected by the current economic crisis.

„The economic crisis also affected this program. Not all of our candidates got a placementabroad as the production at certain foreign units was reduced or completely stopped. That is whywe are glad that we managed to place at least four our engineers,“ says Veronika Muroňová, Headof Training and development and GEDP. One of them Petr Janovský works at ArcelorMittal Eisen-hüttenstadt at the Order management. Michal Buchta works at ArcelorMittal Bergara and MartinHošek and Josef Pavlík also work in Spain.

And how they are doing abroad? „My colleagues at work are outgoing and they are happy to ex-plain everything I ask about. They are also curious and inquire about Ostrava, what we have at ourmill etc. They are most surprised when I tell them that we have 6000 employees,“ shares his im-pressions from his first month in Spain Josef Pavlík. He works at the Steel plant at ArcelorMittalZumaraga where steelmaking has a hundred year long tradition.

If you think that employees in Spain must be better off than we over here in Ostrava then youshould know that their working hours ranges from 8.30 a.m. till 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. till 6.pm.Moreover they do not have a cafeteria where they would go to have meals. Besides in Zaragozawhere Martin Hošek works the plant is located in an industrial zone which is not linked to the pub-lic transport. Thus employees have to commute to work by their own car or by bike.

The other engineers who have not been sent to their new foreign destination work at our mill atthe following plants or departments: Pavel Košík- Power plant, Josef Nádvorník - Blast furnaces,Dušan Moravčík - Order processing, Odrej Kmec - Purchasing department and Martin Skřížala -ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek. May they soon wait to see their new placement and get abroad too.

His name is Eduard Baluch. He joined ArcelorMittal in 2006 as a Safety specialist of the SteelService Centre in France. He has a degree in Mechanical engineering from Slovakian TechnicalUniversity in Bratislava. He also studied occupational safety at Reims University.

„My duty is to coordinate individual plants and centres in Central and Eastern Europe. I am alsoresponsible for safety standard implementation and especially making the Journey to Zero part ofan everyday life of our employees. My job is to continuously reduce employee risks and also takepreventive measures.

Steel product store: We have been on steel market for nearly20 years now

Over this period the store has gained a stable position on the steel market. First it was necessary to create

conditions for storing and serviceof incoming customers. That wasachieved at late 90ties by settingup a stock and store outside thepremises of then Nova Hu’ťOstrava. The store was alsoa pioneer in launching newsystems of storing and rolledproduct sale. Then an e-shopwas found which sells products instock. It was the first e-shop ofits kind in the Czech Republic.

But the store does not only sellfinished products but it alsooffers a wide range of services in

storing, material delivery and semi-product production. Since its foundation the store dispatched more than 1.8 mil tons of finished products to

customers not only in the Czech Republic but also in Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Austriaand Germany.

We would like to thank to all who helped to create our steel product store for their cooperationand look forward to you our customers because our goal is a satisfied customer.

We are certified for crash barrier tests The steel crash barriers improve safety in highway transport. They have to be designed

and tested so that they retain vehicles after impact and prevent them from leaving theroad. They also have to eliminate the severe bounce back to road - collision with passgoing vehicles.

This year we successfully tested two types of road retain systems for retain level H3. It is a twosided crash barrier which is intended for middle dividing line of highways.

The first test was carried out on the testing tracks nearby Kamen u Pacova. The second test wascarried out at the same place. The crash barrier was put under a demanding test. The results ofboth tests came out well. ArcelorMittal Distribution Solutions Czech Republic is thus launchinga new type of crash barrier for the retain level H3.

Following the successful tests we received a certificate from Technical Construction Institute inPrague. Due to increasing demand for reducing lighter and safer crash barriers our companycontinues to develop new crash barriers. We cooperate on this with ArcelorMittal Ostrava andArcelorMittal Research Liège.

VICTAULIC: Increased capacity of tube splinning The tube finishing process at Karviná’s tube plant has become more effective since

October. This is due to a state-of-the-art device of VICTUALIC. It rolls at both ends ofthe tube a spline which makes the tubes connect by a special rubber insert.

Compared to a classic screw connection the VICTUSALIC system benefits from easier handlingduring assembly and dismounting of pipes. „The previous device was operated by two employees.

Now it is handled just by one. Thuswe expect the production capacityto rise by up to 50%,“ says themain benefits of the new deviceHead of maintenance RenéFerfecký. The costs of thisinvestment amounted to about500 thousand crowns and thewhole installation was done bymaintenance workers. „Big credits

goes to the whole team, Jaroslav Mockovčiak for software of the device, Jaroslav Hefner and allfitters and electricians who handled the whole process in a very short time,“ appreciates the workof his colleagues René Ferfecký. He was responsible for the whole event and he and his colleaguesdid a great job.

The crane tracks are safer now In October we carried out an investment

project worth of CZK 1.7 million. Its goalwas to increase safety of employees atcrane tracks. The project was doneOstrava’s company Prevent Moravia.

This investment was decided on due toaccidents which happened in 2005 and 2006.Back then within nine months two accidentsoccurred. In both cases it was a fall of craneoperators from the ladder when descendingfrom the crane. Therefore our company had allthe crane ladders equipped with vertical safetyropes and secured also one of the crane tracks. But this year we improved this security evena bit more. Twelve most important crane trackswere equipped with horizontal safety systemPRIM. It consists of a steel rope which stretchesalong the whole crane track at the height ofabout 1.6 m. The crane operators attach to it onentrance to the crane track by means of a snapring. That is part of a gear that employees will

wear and which will catch them in case of a potential fall. „I am glad we managed to follow it through. Still this year all employees working on crane track

s will be trained how to use the system and since new year all employees working on crane trackswill have to use it. Big credit goes to Prevent Moravia for their quick and quality work. Theassembly had to be adjusted to production often was done in late afternoon hours so that therewere no production time outs due to crane idling during assembly,„ adds HR Director RostislavJevický.

Karvina’s Tubular plant has new bridge craneA new crane is driving above the finishing lines of Karvina’s rolling mill since late

October. The whole event, which affected production capacity, was managed by LukášKuzník from Investment department.

Recent test revealed cracks in the construction of the bridge crane No. 12. According torecommendation of revision technicians it was decided to buy a new one. In H1 we ran a tenderand in late October the investment at a value of CZK 1.8 million was executed.

The new crane serves for tube transportation and it is utilised permanently the whole shift. Ithas a remote control and it can be operated from the cabin as well.

„The fitters and electricians under the leadership of René Ferfecký did a great job during theinstallation of the new crane. The cooperation between maintenance employees andsubcontractors is very good which enabled us to shorten the time of most of our investmentprojects to minimum,“ says Lukáš Kuzník.
