COVERSTORY

This month’s cover is of the beautiful Amaryllis. The genus Ama-ryllis contains two species, the belladonna, commonly known as the cape belladonna lily or naked lady, and the paradiscola; both came from the Cape Province of South America. Amaryl-

lis derives from the Greek word amarysso or amarussein, meaning to sparkle, twinkle, or shine. The Amaryllis was introduced into cultivation at the beginning of the 18th century. Today, the Amaryllis is commonly found in the Canary Islands, Madeira, Spain, Italy, the Azores and Brazil. Most of the Amaryllis bulbs sold during the Holiday season belong to the allied genus Hippeastrum family.

According to classical poets, Amaryllis was a virginal nymph, who fell head over heels in love with a shepherd. The shepherd claimed his only desire was that a new flower be brought to him that had never before existed in the world. Determined that she would be true to only him, Amaryllis pierced her heart with a golden arrow at the shepherd’s door. When the shepherd finally opened his door he discovered a flower with crimson petals which had sprung from the blood of Amaryllis’ heart.

The usual color of the Amaryllis is white with crimson veins, but also includes various shades of red, pink, salmon and orange. The Ama-ryllis is one of the easiest bulbs to bring to bloom, and one of the most beautiful flowers to watch blossom. Their beauty makes them popular around the holidays, so we’re sure you’ll find “the naked ladies” on display this holiday season.

Dear Readers,Sometimes we all need a wake-

up call, whether it be reading alarming news about the side ef-fects of prescription drugs, synthetic food additives and synthetic sugars that can cause debilitating diseases such as ADHD, Autism, Diabetes, Arthritis and the list goes on. These sometimes shocking statistics and studies are not meant to scare, yet instead to bring to light information that empowers each one of us to make healthier buying decisions.

As inhabitants of this wonderful planet we call earth, it is incumbent on each one of us to make good food choices that positively affect our health and well being. How we live our life is up to each one of us. We are individuals, there for there are no one size fits all cookie cutter recipes when it comes to our health. However, you will find some fantastic raw food, wheat free and gluten free recipes in this December issue. Bon Appetite.

Healthy Beginnings Magazine will continue to pro-vide you with natural resources and integrative options for living a naturally healthy life, so that the choice can be yours.

INGREDIENTWATCH

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

Despite its very processed-sounding name, xan-than gum occurs naturally when the bacteria, xanthomonas campestris, is combined with and fermented in corn syrup. The slime substance that

forms in the process acts as a natural stabilizer or thickener. The mixture of bacteria, secretion and corn syrup is then washed in alcohol to put it into solution, then dried and ground. The resultant powder is xanthum gum. Because it is a long chain of three different forms of sugar, xanthan gum is known as a polysaccharide, a relatively complex carbohydrate.

Xanthan gum is used in dairy products, salad dressings, as a substitute for wheat gluten in gluten-free products and in some cosmetic products. Toothpaste often contains it as well, where it serves as a binder to keep the product uniform. Though a bac-terium is used during processing, it is generally not harmful to the skin or the digestive system. To thicken water, xanthan gum is also used by the oil industry to lubricate oil well pumps.

A little amount of xanthan gum goes a long way, hence its appeal. In most foods, it is used at 0.5 percent and lower con-centrations. Its purpose in salad dressings allows the mixture to remain thick enough at rest, and when shaken the mixture can be easily poured. Also used in frozen foods and beverages, xanthan gum creates the pleasant texture in many ice creams. The gum also helps thicken egg substitute made from egg whites to replace the fat and emulsifiers found in yolks.

Some complain of allergies when using products with xan-than gum. Symptoms may include intestinal pain, diarrhea, temporary high blood pressure and migraine headaches. People who work with and may be exposed to xanthan gum dust exhibit nose and throat irritation. Because xanthan gum is produced by a bacterium that is fed corn in order to grow, those allergic to corn most likely react to xanthan gum.

If you are weary of using or ingesting xanthan gum, but need something with similar properties, try Guar Gum, primarily made from the ground endosperm of guar beans. The larg-est application for guar gum is in food, and with the holiday season steadily approaching, perhaps you can put this safer choice to use.

Guar gum uses:• In baked goods it increases dough yield, gives great resiliency and improves texture

• In dairy products, guar gum thickens milk, yogurt, and liquid cheese products; helps maintain texture in ice creams and sherbets

• In dressings and sauces, it improves the stability and appear-ance of salad dressings and various sauces

PROVIDERPROFILE

Janie Beach and her mom Sharon Crank have been in busi-ness together for over 20 years. As I interviewed them on their latest business adventure, as owners of Circle of Life Spa, their energy and mother-daughter interaction shined.

They finished each other’s sentences and mentioned more than once how they love working together and how their individual talents fulfill what the other lacks when it comes to running a successful business.

Janie and Sharon took ownership of Circle of Life Spa in June 2008, they had been members and volunteers at the spa for the previous 4 years. When they heard that the spa might close, they knew it was their time to take over. Janie described the previous owner as having created an empire. So many locals, including Janie and Sharon, relied on the services offered at Circle of Life Spa that they couldn’t let it close its doors.

Circle of Life Spa is a total detox spa. Janie says she didn’t fully understand the power of detox until her own daughter sought detox treatment from her at Circle of Life Spa. Janie’s daughter, age 23, was an alcoholic and was addicted to Oxy Cotton, a highly addictive pain medicine. In one week her daughter went through a complete detox program with Circle of Life Spa in which Janie literally watched her daughter’s addiction be released from her body. Janie described the experience as scary and unbelievable. Her daughter is still clean today, and Janie tells this story to many of her customers.

The greatest gift Janie and Sharon have received from owning the spa is seeing people who are not healthy or happy, come in and leave a changed person. They’ve helped alcoholics, smok-ers, cancer patients, drug addicts and many more. They also receive great pleasure from providing a place for healthy people to remain healthy. Everyone can benefit from the spa.

When a new customer comes into the spa they are person-ally addressed by Janie or Sharon. A custom program is then designed for their specific needs utilizing the numerous services offered. Circle of Life Spa offers: meeting with a nutritional bio-physiologist, massage therapy, infrared saunas, a flotation tank,

mineral body wraps, Power-Plate (an exercise machine designed by astronauts to increase the work out in a shorter amount of time), dancing, reiki, energy work, and counseling. All of these services work together to detox and heal the body.

Circle of Life Spa is unique in the energy one feels upon entering the spa. Janie and Sharon stressed the importance of their customers and keeping the spa feeling local and more like a family than a business. People feel welcomed at Circle of Life, they don’t feel rushed. They even have customers who come in just to sit and talk, even if they’re not using any ser-vices that day. Janie and Sharon have hopes to grow Circle of Life Spa and vow to never lose the personalized touch the spa offers it’s customers.

Janie and Sharon’s biggest surprise with running this busi-ness has been in the support they’ve received from past and new customers. People come in daily that have heard about the spa and the new owners and give thanks and support to Janie and Sharon in their goal of taking over Circle of Life and continuing its success.

Future plans for Circle of Life Spa are merely thoughts right now, but expansion and growth are definite. A store has been added to the spa as a representation of Janie’s love for angels. Still in the process of receiving products, the store, titled “Wings of a Goddess,” will offer angel figurines, essential oils, candles and crystals.

Outside of work, Janie and Sharon love doing everything outdoors. Janie is an avid Harley Motorcycle rider and loves the summers. However, their main passion lies in providing an all inclusive spa experience to anyone and everyone. They provide everything you could need for a spa day including, towels, robes, flip flops, and even underwear! They make it easy and convenient and love every second of what they do. They look forward to many more years of fun.

I didn’t learn about reactive hypoglycemia (low blood sugar induced by eating sugar or refined carbohydrates) until after medical school. On the way across

Kansas City to KU Medical school in my junior year I remember every day drinking a large soda with two choco-late cupcakes in the car before early morning rounds. By 9:30 I would become so sleepy and forgetful that I had to go up to the residents quarters and take a nap for an hour or so before I could resume func-tioning. When you eat concentrated sugars like this ( 9 + teaspoons in a small soda) the blood sugar rockets upwards. The body then thinks it has consumed a big meal and secretes a lot of insulin from the pancreas. This causes all the sugar to go into the cells of the body and drops the blood sugar quickly. In turn all the symptoms of low blood sugar including memory loss, cognitive dif-ficulty, fatigue, confusion, feelings of frustration, inability to concentrate, not to mention appre-hension, irritability, lightheadedness, faintness, headache and the craving for more sugar occurs.

Many people are nibbling on sugar or simple carbohydrates all day long to combat their low blood sugar and brain fog. Let’s not give little Johnny highly sweetened breakfast cereal, orange juice and waffles with syrup before school if we want his brain to work.

One of our most difficult patients who had an intractable seizure disorder came to us with a history of drinking six-64 oz. sodas per day and no food. Talk about blood sugar problems! His condition improved greatly when he stopped soda and added protein to his diet.

Not only regular white sugar but any kind of sugar can cause blood sugar problems. Sugar substitutes are also problematic. Aspartame has been shown to cause memory loss, drowsiness,

sleepiness, headaches, ADD, chronic fatigue, weight gain and just about every neurological symptom in the book. I saw one patient this summer whose MS symp-toms melted away after she stopped sugar less gum. A word to the wise, practically all gum has aspartame in it and my MS patient was chewing 6 to 8 sticks per day.

In the book by Peter J. D’Adamo, ND, PHd, Eat Right 4 your Type, proposes that

blood type can govern your dietary needs. While not right for everybody it has helped

many of my patients. O’s are generally car-nivores and do well with meat while A’s tend

to run more toward the vegetarian side for favorable energy production. He portends that

lectins (which are large proteins made when one consumes the wrong food for your blood type) clog up the body cells and make it difficult for them to process oxygen and blood sugar and hence cause foggy thinking, memory difficulties and chronic illness. Wheat is one of the bad foods for both O’s and A’s. A whole wheat sandwich for lunch can cause sleepiness in many people. It is better

to use spelt bread or sprouted grain breads instead.

In upcoming articles I will discuss the importance of remov-ing heavy metals and the use of powerful nutrients to prevent and reverse brain fog.

The changing of the seasons often times brings about changes to the skin. You may already be noticing the difference—dryness, flakiness and sometimes itchiness, are signs your skin is falling victim to the cooler tem-

peratures. Luckily, with minimal effort, your skin can beat the lackluster spell cast upon it by winter and come out glowing, radiant and, most importantly—hydrated.

Food TherapyThe obvious first step would include drinking lots of water.

While water intake is important, eating the right foods can be equally effective. Water bound to food molecules is processed by the body at a molecular level, hydrating at a faster pace than a simple glass of water. Foods with high-water content include melons, berries, cucumbers, apples, peaches, plumbs, fresh tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, celery and peas. Fish and flaxseed oil are also highly recommended. These oils, which are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, are known to help replenish moisture in dry skin and hair. Eating sensibly gives skin the nutrients it needs to look its best. Combined with 6-8 glasses of water a day, your skin will receive the hydration it needs from the inside out.

Natural Skin CareTo help chronically dry skin retain more of its natural mois-

ture, aromatherapists recommend the use of essential oils, in ad-dition to plant and herb extracts. Almond oil and rosewater are excellent moisturizing lubricants for normal, dry and sensitive skin. Almond oil replaces necessary body oils while rosewater is a gentle astringent and moisturizer replacing liquid to the cells and tightening the skin. Fruit oils nourish, invigorate and hydrate the skin. Citrus fruits, along with bananas, pineapples, apples, and melons, are popular natural ingredients as they promote skin development. Aloe Vera, hemp, coco, and shea butter are some of the most nourishing moisturizers for severe dry skin.

Stay away! While a toasty fire might sound appealing during these

cooler months, it could actually be robbing you of much-needed moisture. The warm air from fireplaces, heaters, and blow dry-ers are known to leave your skin dry and flaky. Other offenders include coffee, herbal teas, soda, diuretics, asparagus, cough drops with menthol and alcohol.

Incredible Edible Hydration:

Banana-Cream MaskFor a simple skin treatment you can do in the comfort of your

own home, follow this recipe for a banana-cream mask. This is one of the most nourishing and hydrating masks you can use.

Note: This mask is rather rich and therefore not recommended for oily skin types. Shelf Life - 6 hours in the refrigerator.

Ingredients:

• 1 organic banana• 1 ½ tbsp organic honey

Mash the banana with the back of a fork. Add honey and continue mashing until mixture is creamy. Apply to a clean face with a brush. Allow the mask to sit for 25 to 30 minutes. Wash off and Voila!

Start the year out right! Would you like to learn new health habits to improve the quality of your life? With healthy habits your body will

last you many youthful-looking years and you will be able to give more of yourself to others. You will experience a greater, more satisfying sense of well-being.

Perhaps it is time to get rid of toxins, lose weight, improve your complex-ion, decrease your constipation, and strengthen your colon, and have more inner peace and joy. By cleansing and purifying the body, by getting rid of toxic waste, your body, mind, and spirit will operate at peak efficiency and clarity.

By participating in a cleansing program your health can come back into balance so that you can have increased vitality and well-being. By cleansing the intestines and liver you are also cleansing the other internal organs (like the bloodstream, cells, and tissues) of the overgrowth of unhealthy micro-organ-isms. These are the molds, yeasts, fungus’, spores, viruses, and unhealthy bacteria. When excess mucus and toxins build up in the body they can develop into free radical cells promoting cancer, viruses, cysts, tumors and bring on old age dis-eases and skeletal degeneration.

Problems in the body and mind often arise from either deficiencies or conges-tion. In a state of deficiency we are not acquiring enough nutrients to meet our

bodily needs; whereas, in a state of con-gestion we are suffering from excessive intake and reduced eliminative functions from the over consumption of foods and non-foods such as caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, refined sugar and chemicals. Many of our acute and chronic medical diseases result from the clogging of our tissues and tubes and the suffocating of our cells and consequently our vitality. Illness and symptoms are the effect and are also the body’s response to regain balance and homeostasis. Illness and

disease are usually due to deficiency of life force and/or stagnation of one, or a combination of, food, blood, water, phlegm, air or energy itself. Rarely does disease exist if one pos-sesses life force vitality.

The incorporation of di-etary changes such as more fresh organic (non-gmo) fruits and vegetables, wa-ter, super foods, essential fatty acid oils, pro-biotics

(acidophilus), amino acids, enzymes, and reduction of animal fats and heavy proteins and abusive substances is the beginning of the rejuvenation process for the human body.

The first phase of a cleansing pro-gram is the elimination of the intake of toxic substances and dis-empowering mental thought patterns. The second phase is to cleanse and detoxify. The third phase is to regenerate, rejuvenate, and revitalize our physical, mental, and spiritual bodies.

The liver is one of the major keys to good health. The liver has many functions and a major responsibility for the assimilation and processing of nutrients, the construction of our biochemistry, and detoxification of metabolic waste. Our health and vitality depends on our liver. The causes for poor liver function are: accumulation of toxic substances, poor food program, over-eating, drugs and alcohol, and constant negative thoughts and deluded emotions that we act out or repress.

It is recommended to clean the liver out one to two times a year. A clean and well-functioning liver produces natural anti-histamines which keep the immune system working strong and smooth, cleanses the bloodstream, discharges waste into the bile, neutralizes and destroys poisons in the body, metabolizes and helps excrete excess fats and cholesterol, assists in the formation and storage of red blood cells and iron, aids digestion, maintains hor-monal balance, and gives energy to regenerate its own damaged tissue.

Colonics: Colonics are very important and the colon is in charge of the intestinal absorption of nutrients and the elimination of solid waste products from the body. The absorption of nutrients rather than toxins is of paramount importance. Our bodies need to have a colon with tissue integrity, a proper intestinal culture, and be able to have timely evacuation of waste material. The recommenda-tion is a colonic in each phase of the cleansing program followed by the liver-gall bladder flush the morning after. You may use purified water, coffee, or wheatgrass or chlorophyll.

Cleansing and detoxification is considered to be the missing link in Western medicine and a key to improved health and vitality for human beings. This leads to inner peace for first the individual, then the family, community, and the world. You are invited to evaluate your diet, breath, exercise program, stress level (how well you handle stress), amount of sleep you get, and your water intake. Then look at planning your cleansing program to include colonics, massages, body work, counseling, yoga classes, naps, journaling, and spiritual-meditation tapes and books. Hon-estly evaluate your life. Make new, healthier decisions and choices for a more satisfying sense of well-being.

The act of breathing is the body’s most vital and basic func-tion, yet many of us pay little attention to our breath. We have never learned how to breathe correctly!

Learning to breathe properly can greatly improve your health and reduce the impact of stress on your body.

You’ve probably heard someone say to you when you are upset, “Take a deep breath.” That is good advice! Our emo-tions are directly linked to our breathing. The next time you are upset or angry notice how you are breathing. You may not be breathing at all!

Your lack of breathing is what’s keeping you enslaved to your own emotional baggage. By learning how to breathe fully and consciously you can free yourself from any emotional blocks or hang-ups. You will become happier, calmer, more powerful and purposeful in everything you do.

Working purposefully with the breath seems to uplift the whole arena of human therapeutic interaction and naturally promotes awareness, transformation and integration, and de-livers participants to a place of deep inner connection and an improved sense of well-being.

Therapeutic breathwork engages all three aspects of body, mind and spirit in its approach to awareness and healing. The three primary areas of benefit are: 1) body-mind therapy, 2) personal development and 3) spiritual enlightenment. Each one of these approaches may be the primary focus of any given

breathwork session, yet all three comprise the full scope of facilitating your session.

The first step in this practice is in reminding the body how to breathe an “open, healthy breath”, i.e. the natural, relaxed and uninhibited breath most of us began with as infants. Then, by “picking up the inhale”, i.e. by starting the next breath a little sooner and closing the natural pause or gap, the connected or circular breath is established. This approach of body-mind therapy usually initiates a direct encounter with whatever physi-cal, emotional and/or mental patterns may have developed in the past and are currently getting in the way of an individual living and breathing fully and easily.

Secondly, the purpose of therapeutic breathwork is to up-lift your body, mind and spirit towards new levels of personal performance and creative expression. The empowering aspect of breathwork helps you explore new levels of personal expres-sion, purposefulness and interpersonal communication within your relationships. As a part of this process, you are guided and “coached” through a variety of personal growth techniques and tools that seek to engage and direct your life, imaginatively, productively and with an orientation of spiritual purpose.

Thirdly, therapeutic breathwork is utilized to aid your journey toward spiritual enlightenment. Allowing the “spirit of breath” to lead the session, your breathwork practitioner observes and carefully attunes to and negotiates the presence of

Vanilla, it is what comes to mind when looking for a flavor to compliment chocolate, coffee, custard and caramel, or when buying any woman a

gift of sweet, yet subtle perfume. With its soothing scent and sweet flavor, it is not a surprise that it is one of the most popular spices around the world.

Not much information is available today on vanilla’s health benefits, but in old literature, it was considered an aphrodisiac and a remedy for fever. As late as the 1700s, the spice was rec-ommended by physicians to be drunk as an infusion in order to help impotent men. In modern times, aromatherapy tests were done on different aromas and the one that most men were aroused by was vanilla.

Vanilla, as an essential oil, has several health benefits. In addition to being an aphrodisiac, vanilla is an anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, febrifuge, anti-depressant, and sedative, as well as having tranquilizing and relaxing properties. It may also help regulate menstruation by activating certain hormones, such as estrogen. The essential oil of vanilla is extracted by solvent extraction of a resinous substance obtained from fermented vanilla beans.

Vanilla is also supposed to increase levels of catecholamine and can also be considered mildly addictive. Catecholamine is associated with preparing the body for physical activity, typically raising heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose levels. If levels of catecholamine become too high in the body, it has been know to cause stress.

Vanillin, an organic compound, is the primary component of the extract of a vanilla bean. Synthetic vanillin is more commonly used as a flavoring

agent in foods, beverages and phar-maceuticals, rather than natural vanilla

extract. This artificial vanillin is made from guaiacol or lignin, a constituent of wood and

byproduct of the paper industry. Both are actually organic complex chemical compounds, and guaia-

col is often used medicinally as an expectorant, antiseptic, even as a local anesthetic.

The three main commercial forms and preparations for va-nilla are whole pod, powder and extract. The powder form of vanilla is made from ground whole pods, and at times is mixed with sugar, starch or other ingredients. Vanilla extract is often made in an alcoholic solution.

All three forms are used in various ways, especially cook-ing and baking. Usually used in sweet foods, especially as an enhancer to specific flavors such as chocolate, its major use is flavoring ice cream. Considering natural extract can be expen-sive and hard to find, try doing it yourself!

Make your own natural vanilla extract: You will need – • Vanilla bean• Vodka• Glass jar or bottle• Knife

First, split the vanilla bean lengthwise with a sharp knife. Place in a jar with ¾ cup vodka (Be sure the bean is completely covered with vodka). Seal the jar tightly, and let stand in a cool, dark place for 4 to 6 months. Also, shake the jar occasionally during this time.

Additional tips and tricks:• When selecting vanilla beans, choose plump beans with a thin skin to get the most seeds possible. To test, gently squeeze the bean between your fingers.

• Do not discard the pod, as it is just as usable as the seeds. When used in sauces and such, add to the mixtures after they have briefly cooled in order to preserve flavor.

• If you discover what looks like sugar crystals inside the pod, this is pure vanil-lin crystals. Enjoy it!

A neat use for your homemade extract:

Place a few drops of vanilla extract on a cotton ball. Put this in a custard cup in the back of your refrigerator to diffuse odors.

There’s a substance that research shows can reverse one of the biggest contributing factors of aging.

The nutrient is called resveratrol (rez-ver-a-trol). Res-veratrol is found in wine, grapes, peanuts and some ber-

ries; it has a variety of powerful effects for improving health.

Studies are ongoing to discover how this powerful nutrient works. New information about it emerges regularly. One of the most recent of these studies points to a likely reason why resveratrol has such a dramatic effect on slowing the aging process.

Some Background On AgingOne of the biggest factors in aging is increased insulin

resistance. Insulin resistance happens when our cells stop responding to insulin. When this happens, cells can’t get the glucose they need for energy. And since every cell uses glucose as a source of energy, when they can’t get enough, problems arise.

But with insulin resistance, because your cells are refusing delivery, you can’t just eat sugar (glucose) to turn this around. More importantly, everything you eat is converted to blood sugar, even proteins and fats. Simply dumping sugar into your system is a little like filling the trunk of your car with gasoline. Sure, you’ve got more fuel in the car, it’s just not doing you any good. In fact, too much sugar in the body is the primary cause of insulin resistance.

The problems associated with insulin resistance include weight gain, metabolic syndrome (blood sugar regulation

problems) and ultimately, type II diabetes with all its associated health issues.

In addition, to deal with excess sugar in the system, your body forms a substance called lipofuscin, which is sort of like gooey caramel in and between tissues. Imagine if you poured liquid caramel into your gas tank. How well would anything work?

Lipofuscin shows up as “age spots” on the skin, but more im-portantly, as brown, sticky gunk inside the body. It affects organs (including brain, lungs, kidneys and liver) and tissues (including connective tissue in the joints, fascia and skin). In other words, all the places we experience the “signs of aging.” You know, poor memory and focus, pain the joints, inefficient digestion, breathing problems, low energy... you get the picture.

What We’re LearningBack to the recent studies. Researchers in Shanghai dis-

covered that resveratrol improves insulin sensitivity. In other words, it helps restore your cells’ ability to respond to insulin in a healthy way. When cells can respond to insulin well, you have more energy, you lose weight more easily, and you form less lipofuscin. All good.

The mechanism for this improvement seems to be associated with resveratrol’s ability to activate the sirtuin (SIRT1) gene. The sirtuin gene produces proteins demonstrated to increase longevity across multiple species.

Although more research is needed, evidence available in-

dicates sirtuins may be able to control age-related disorders in various organisms and in humans. These disorders include the aging process, obesity, metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

To top it off, the only natural substance that activates sirtuin is resveratrol. The trick is to get the right dose. Although resveratrol occurs in red wine, you’d need to drink 60 glasses of wine a day to get the therapeu-tic effects. This means the only way to get enough for these effects is to take a supple-ment.

What Dose? When taken orally in smaller doses, the

body metabolizes resveratrol very rapidly. This prevents the full beneficial effects in the body. To counteract this, you can take a larger dose once a day rather than smaller doses spread out.

Because of the way it’s metabolized, you get maximum benefit by taking 200 mg once a day. You can take it with your regular vitamins or by itself, whichever is most convenient. Increasingly you will find sources of resveratrol in 100 mg capsules, making this higher dose easy to take.

With what we’re learning about the ef-fects of this nutrient, is it any wonder that resveratrol is among the most promising nutrients to slow the effects of aging?

Hearing loss from an accident, physical trauma, or rapidly progressing disease can be easier to accept and deal with because it occurs very suddenly and is unmistakable. In contrast, many individuals with

gradual onset partial hearing loss are generally in good health and certainly do not like to think of themselves as somehow impaired or less capable than anyone else. These patients often claim that they do not have a hearing problem. They commonly state that “I hear but don’t understand the words clearly!” They believe that the communication problem is a result of those around them trying to talk to them from another room, “mum-bling their words” or some other form of poor speech habits. Unfortunately, the de-cision to deny hearing loss can negatively impact quality of life and relationships.

The emotions associated with dealing with hearing loss can be complicated. Isolation, co-dependent behavior, depression, and avoidance of social situations may occur. Most patients with decreased hearing will have some experience of embar-rassment. They may miss the punch line of a joke, respond inappropriately to what they thought they heard, or make a mistake with directions. Having a sense of humor about these mistakes is helpful, but at some point embarrassment and frus-tration can be very stressful.

With today’s advanced hearing aid technology, 90 to 95% of individuals with partial hearing loss can be significantly helped. Probably, the most common reason that people with partial hearing loss do not pursue help for themselves is because the

idea of wearing hearing aids is embarrassing. In the world we live in now, people very commonly wear devices, in, over, and above their ears. The Bluetooth telephone, iPods, and many other various ear pieces are used by people of all ages. Hear-ing aids now are designed to be very inconspicuous and can certainly be made to “not look like” hearing aids at all. There is a huge population of individuals who very much need some help with amplification but do not pursue help because of the “hearing aid stigma.” Keeping this fact in mind, the manufac-

turers of hearing aid technology have gone to great lengths to design products that are inconspicuous and cosmetically acceptable.

Most audiology practices become very busy following the holidays. People are together with friends and family and are

frequently in group situations and the hearing loss often be-comes more apparent to everyone. This is a time of year when audiologists tend to see patients who have finally come to the realization that they want to improve the quality of their life and care enough about their loved ones to seek help.

The start of winter and the sub-sequent increase in indoor time presents a great opportunity to talk about indoor air quality. Heaters

and fireplaces are running, inversions lead to days of stale outside air and snow plows drop a sandy grit over the roads for traction. How can you possibly have a high level of indoor air quality with all of this outside your front door?

For starters, leave those street shoes at the door. If you’re fortunate enough to have a mudroom, use it as it was in-tended and leave your dirty shoes there. If you don’t have a mudroom, consider creating a small space near the most trafficked door where entrants can pause and remove street shoes and don house slippers. A small chair or bench from the thrift store placed by the door is a great solution. This street shoe removal is im-portant for three reasons. One, it extends the life of your flooring material, both a financial and environmental benefit. Two, it reduces the volume of cleaning necessary to maintain a tidy space. And finally, it reduces the airborne particulate matter that gets disturbed from the floor as people walk, thereby reducing the load on your HVAC filter. Increased filter effectiveness and decreased blockage are critical to maintaining good indoor air. If you’re not changing your filters every 3 months in warm weather and every 2 months when it is colder, it’s a great time to make a New Year’s resolution to in-crease your family’s health by doing so. A good residential filter with HEPA filtration

and a high particulate reduction compo-nent will typically cost around $20. This is a very worthwhile investment.

Other contributors to compromised indoor air quality include cleaning solu-tions, project related adhesives and finish and furniture materials. The holidays are a time when many folks get new home improvement and furniture items. Before purchasing these items, consider this: most wood or wood-based furniture and cabinetry goods are made with ad-hesives and binders that have an added component called urea-formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is benign in it’s natural state within carbon based materials such as wood and humans. When it is com-bined with the organic compound urea it releases toxic vapors as it cures and sets. The combination of urea-formaldehyde has been used in furniture assemblage for decades due to the high tensile strength that it added to composite products such as plywood and MDF (medium density fiberboard). Sturdy may be good, but the release of toxic vapors such as Benzene and Toluene, known to the EPA as car-cinogens, is not. If you want to purchase wood based furniture, consider used. There are some fantastic secondhand and vintage shops in the area that carry classic furniture at prices competitive to new. Older furniture either does not contain added urea-formaldehyde, or if it does it has finished off-gassing the respiratory irritants.

Similar concerns can be raised about new upholstered goods as well. They

typically contain foams and fabrics made of petroleum-based compounds that also break down with wear and be-come airborne irritants. If you buy new furniture, invest in products where wood components do not have added urea-formaldehyde or upholstery foams and textiles that do not have petroleum-based compounds.

Remember: Check street shoes at the door; change the filtration in your HVAC and buy the most effective particulate reduction filtration media you can afford. When buying furniture, look for wood products with no added urea-formal-dehyde and non-petroleum component foam and fabric. Here’s to your health!

Annuities are issued by life insurance companies to provide benefits dur-ing your lifetime. An

annuity in the payout phase provides a guaranteed in-come that you can elect to have start either immedi-ately after purchase or at a future date. You don’t have to pay federal income tax on accumulated earnings until payouts start. Withdrawals are taxable and, if you are under age 59-1/2, may be sub-ject to a 10% tax penalty.

Payout, may be in one of several forms:• Straight Life Annuity - You receive an income for the rest of your life. However, no payments are made to anyone, even your dependents, after your death. This is sometimes called a “pure” annuity. This type of annuity is often recommended for a person who needs the maximum amount of income and either has no dependents or has taken care of them through other means.

• Joint and Survivor Annuity - Payouts are made for as long as either you or your designated survivor lives.

• Installment Refund Annuity - Payouts are somewhat less than a straight life annuity, but they will at least equal the amount paid in premiums, regardless of when you die; any refund is paid to your beneficiary in installments.

• Life Annuity with Period Certain - Pay-outs are made to you for your life. However, this type of annuity features a “guarantee” provision. This means that if you die within a certain period after you start receiving income, usually 10 or 20 years, your ben-eficiary will receive regular payments for the balance of that period.

Annuities have many different features; there are a number of factors to examine before you buy. For example you should ask

if there are charges for early withdraw-als. Are there gradually decreasing

withdrawal charges over a pe-riod of years?

Annuities provide an impor-tant retirement savings vehicle for many Americans. Generally, annuities are available as either variable or fixed contracts, and there are expenses and fees as-

sociated with the contracts.

A variable annuity is a long-term invest-ment vehicle used

for retirement savings. Assets allocated to your chosen

investment divisions are subject to market risks and may fluctuate in value.

A fixed annuity is also used for retire-ment savings, but has no corresponding investment divisions. Funds in a fixed annuity contract are allocated to a fixed account with a competitive interest rate, and that money can accumulate over time, providing a nest egg from which you can withdraw. Some immediate fixed annuities can provide you with a guaranteed income stream, as well.

Please note that the guarantee associ-ated with an annuity product is subject to the claims paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Review the prospec-tus carefully before you invest or send money.

Integrated Awareness® is a unique and brilliantly effective way to work through divorce, loss, illness and transitions.

Have you ever experienced resisting, resenting, or rejecting the current state of your life? Have you ever felt that there must be more than this to life?

Integrated Awareness® quiets this mind chatter. If no part of you is off doing something else (like wishing things were different) you would experience yourself being in the present. When you’re present you operate in a state of non-judgment and freedom. Clarity and ease replace confusion and suffering . . . dis-ease and problems disappear.

Integrated Awareness® restores congru-ency and harmony to all dimensions of the self:

• Physically you experience doing what you want without the fear of pain or re-occurrence of the injury.

• Mentally you are quiet and without a sense of coercion - worrying stops.

• Emotionally you respond to present events instead of recreating past hurts.

• Your Energy Field regains mobility - free

from imprints and fixations - no longer bound or stuck.

• Spiritually you are present.

When you are present with all aspects of yourself, actively cooperating with each other, you accelerate and direct your life more powerfully (In spiritual terms, healing and being present with uncondi-tional acceptance is ulti-mately the same thing).

In 1996, San Francisco Kaiser Hospital offered IA® to patients and pa-tient’s families after it ran a 9-month research pro-gram. They found that this energy work reduced pre-op anxiety and sped up post-op healing. The results were remarkable. Patients, and family members that received IA® treatments reported more trust, ease and satisfaction with their hospital experience. Records showed that they healed faster and with less pain or complications.

IA® addresses the emotional, men-tal, spiritual and energetic aspects of a physical problem. It accelerates Western Medicine’s mechanics for healing. When the dis-ease lingers, increases, or be-comes chronic IA® can provide relief by bringing together the many dimensions of your consciousness for a broader, deeper and effective healing.

When you take into account that your soul is timeless and that your body and mind experience time as being of the essence, the challenge becomes how to integrate these higher dimensional realities into your personal experience of life. IA® brings congruency between this expanded awareness and your personal story about your life. The quality of your

life increases as your skill at integrat-ing all of your levels of consciousness increase.

We are constantly searching for this integration within ourselves, with others, with our life purpose, with life

in general. We long to unify our disconnected, separated, disassociated and imbalanced percep-tions – to make sense of life. As we synthesize apparent dichotomies, paradoxes and separa-tions we awaken new lev-els of innate wisdom and guidance. We experience more power, satisfaction

and ease in our life no matter what our circumstances.

Given that the mystery of self-aware-ness is the single greatest puzzle facing each one of us - it is interesting that most of the time we distract ourselves by doing something else thereby keeping us from piecing the puzzle together. The work of IA® will help you bring awareness and integration throughout the spectrum of your consciousness, and if no part of you is off doing something else, then you are in the moment, operating in a state with-out judgment, free from the constraints of the past. When you live in a state in which all parts of you are present, the experience of your life is that of being free and fulfilled.

Periodontal disease and diabetes – are dentists doing enough? With a growing population of diabetics (presently 25 million) and pre-dia-betics (60 million), we are falling short. Gum

disease plays an important role in diabetes. There is significant evidence that periodontal (gum) disease may contribute to high-er rates of premature death in diabetics. While many people know about diabetic complications of the eyes, kidneys, nerves, blood vessels, and heart, few know much about the connection between periodontal health and diabetes. This is why we as dentists must step forward and edu-cate our patients about the correlation between gum disease and diabetes.

People with diabetes, particularly those with chronic high blood glucose levels, are more susceptible to bacterial infec-tions everywhere in the body, including in the mouth. In addi-tion to making a person susceptible to infections, high blood glucose levels also inhibit the healing of infections. When an infection in the mouth tissue is not controlled, the teeth can

become loose, and chewing can become painful or difficult. An uncontrolled infection can eventually cause tooth loss.

High blood glucose levels can raise the risk of periodontal disease in another way as well: When blood glucose levels are high, the glucose levels in all body fluids, including saliva, become very high. Certain bacteria feed on sugar and grow

readily in the mouth, particularly when saliva glucose levels are high. Having higher levels of these bacteria in the mouth increases the risk for both periodontal diseases and dental decay.

One early complication of diabetes – namely, changes in the blood vessel walls – can also increase the risk of developing periodontal diseases. In short, the vessel walls become

thicker. Blood is necessary to bring oxygen and nutrients to all body tissues and to remove waste products made by cells in the body tissues. Thicker blood vessel walls slow down these processes and weaken resistance to infection. Without a good blood supply, the periodontal tissues become too weak to fight infections.

What are Omega 3 fatty acids and why are they important additions to a healthy diet?

Research indicates that proper levels of omega-3 fatty acids aid in healthy heart func-tion, reduces inflammation, maintains bone health, decreases depression, is essential for eye development and critical for infant brain development and optimal nerve function

The typical Western diet is lacking in Omega 3 fatty acids and abundant in the omega 6 fatty acids. The recommended ratio is 2:1. Most Americans are consuming 20:1.How can I increase my intake of omega 3 fatty acids?

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in a variety of foods such as cold-water fish, flaxseed and flaxseed oil, walnut oil, soybean oil and free-range chicken eggs. Supplementation with fish oil capsules is also an excellent way to

add this essential fatty acid to your diet. When choosing a fish oil look for phar-

maceutical grade, filtered fish oil capsules that are labeled manufactured by GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). How much do I need?

The American Heart Association recom-mends 1 gram/day of omega 3 up to 3+ grams per day, depending on your health needs.

Adding fish to your diet 2 times/week, cold-pressed flaxseed oil and fish oil supple-ments will increase your levels of omega 3.

The average person has 1500 billion bacteria in

the mouth...

Page 27: December 2008 HB Mag

December 2008 27 For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

The average person has 1500 billion bacteria in the mouth, comprised of 800 species of microbes living un-der the gums and along the roots of the teeth. When the microbes increase to proportions of high viral, bacterial and fungal loads they spill into the blood and travel to all parts of the body. In their New York Times best seller “You: The Owners Manual” Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. state that “you need to com-bat gingivitis and periodontal disease which can cause inflammation in your body and aging of your immune and arterial systems.”

A number of studies show a correlation between periodontal (gum) disease and systemic diseases such as cardiovascular (heart) disease, diabetes, sinus problems and multiple other concerns. So the mouth really is connected to the rest of the body! It has been suggested that all diseases start orally and the challenged immune system shows up as problems in the mouth. Gum disease or periodontal disease is a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums that destroys the supporting bone and tissue around your teeth. It is the major cause of adult tooth loss, bad breath, and affects three out of four people after the age of 35. It provides a direct path for bacteria to enter your blood stream on a daily basis.

Do you know if you are at risk for diabetes? To de-termine your risk for diabetes, consider being seen by a dentist who is an expert in diabetes and periodontal dis-ease for a periodontal evaluation and diabetic risk assess-ment. Remember, early treatment is the key to your total health. If you are a diabetic, your treatment team should consist of your primary care doctor, nurse educator, eye doctor, other specialists and your dentist. Communication between these health care professionals is necessary for your total health care. We must build a comprehensive and complete program designed to monitor a healthy outcome for diabetes control and prevention.

Well you guessed it; it’s that time of year again. The time when all the cold and flu viruses like to stay indoors where its warm and cozy and where they can infect the unsuspecting, you.

There are more than 200 different viruses that can cause the collection of symptoms that we call a cold. When we are run-down, tired, stressed, or suffering from poor absorp-tion and elimination in the gut, a cold or flu virus can take hold. As the body begins the process of detoxification and recovery from the infection, we experience the symptoms of a cold – a heavy head, blocked or runny nose, and fever. Take supplements of vitamin C and zinc to keep colds at bay, or to speed recovery. Wash your hands frequently to help from getting the virus to begin with and then to keep it from spreading. Cold and flu viruses can remain infectious for about one week at human body temperature, over 30 days at 0 °C (32 °F), and for much longer periods at very low temperatures. Disinfectants and detergents can inactivate most cold and influenza strains easily.

• As soon as the first symptoms of a cold or flu appear, take ½ tsp echinacea tincture, every two hours; and three times a day take ½ tsp of a mixture of equal parts grated ginger, licorice powder, black pepper and cardamom, stirred into 1 tsp runny honey.

• Take hot boneset tea every two hours at the first signs of the flu. Boneset relieves the aches and pains of flu, helps to throw off fevers, and clears congestion in the sinuses and throat.

• To help clear mucus and congestion, make a steam in-halation using teas or oils of thyme, peppermint, lavender, cinnamon or rosemary.

Carl Rogers stated that empathy is “being able to per-ceive the internal frame of reference of another with accuracy and with the emotional components and means which pertain as if one were that person. An

empathic response is an attempt to put ourselves in the other person’s place so that our feelings will suggest to us not only his emotions but also his perspective and motives. Important and significant aspects of empathy are awareness of the state of being of another, understanding of this condition, a personal identification with the situation, and appropriate effective response.

Experts perceive a natural progres-sion of empathy development in chil-dren. After one year, infants become more aware that they are distinct from others, and try to soothe another cry-ing infant. Around two years of age, children begin to realize that someone else’s feelings differ from their own and become more sensitive to cues revealing what another child feels. In late childhood, advanced empathy emerges and chil-dren can understand distress beyond the immediate situation. Nurturing children from an early age to be empathetic, most likely will increase the childs ability to become more active, committed, creative, a critical thinker, problem solver and productive member of society.

According to experts, empathy is one of the most critical skills that need to be developed in our children. There are factors that are particularly destructive and can reduce the development of empathy in an individual. The first factor is the emotional unavailability of parents. Parents spend less than 30 minutes a day of one on one time with their children after a full workday. Many parents feel guilty for not spending enough time with their children, to fill that void they then feel the need to compensate them with material gifts. This backfires. Instead the result is the

child having a sense of entitlement.

Children, who live in a stressful en-vironment and experienced emotional and physical abuse, as well as threats and physical punishments, have more of a challenge mastering the skill of empathy. Children, who grow up without a stable and positive role model have a harder time becoming an empathetic adult. In addition, the bombardment of violent

media images as well as the introduction of inappropriate video games has desensitized children, thus diminishing the role of empathy in the lives of children.

The challenge is to nurture empathy in our children in school, at home, and within our communities. First and fore-most, it is vital that we introduce our children to an emotional

vocabulary with which they identify and are able to use. Clueing them into the sensitivity of others and developing an awareness of someone else’s point of view is extremely relevant. In addition, reinforcing positive behaviors goes very far in helping children to be empathetic individuals. Another helpful way to build empathy in children is ex-plaining to them the effects of their behavior on others. It is important to point out to our children that they have the power to make others happy by being kind and generous. Another useful tool is to explain to our children who have hurt or distressed others, why their behavior is harmful, and furthermore, giving them suggestions for making amends to those hurt.

In addition, the way that we, as parents, handle situ-ations, resolve conflicts, provide the opportunity to solve real life problems can enhance the odds of producing em-pathetic individuals. Opportunities to “practice empathy”, whether it is real life scenario, or practice through other therapeutic techniques, such as role play or play therapy, force one to stretch one’s emotional spectrum and sharpen one’s emotional recall.

The value of empathy is vital to the growth and devel-opment of a caring moral society. The constant sharing of emotions and the analysis of situations and emotions, the capacity to be an attentive listener by hearing other people’s opinions, as well as the ability to validate another’s point of view are all crucial elements in teaching children to become empathetic adults. Education is a valuable tool to instill empathy in children. Learning about these social contexts, how to identify them and read cues within this framework, are essential skills that contribute strongly towards individual and social well-being. Whether it is at home, at school, or in the community, modeling an empathetic behavior is one of the keys to success. Within this context, empathy clearly maximizes an individual’s potential to be a successful and committed member of our society.

“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.” –Anne Frank

If you have ever taken a walk through the woods after a stressful day or found yourself wandering alongside a stream or lake just daydreaming, then you have experienced the natural calming effect of nature. Research shows that spending un-

structured time outdoors helps our brains develop and at the same time relaxes us naturally. While hiking, we’re joined by insects, birds, frogs, & deer. There are always new and exciting things to find in nature. Taking a walk everyday keeps us healthier and happier and it is something we can do at any age.

As we get older we gain the desire to go back to where we felt comfortable growing up. If you grew up in the country or your family often vacationed in the country, you’ll probably find yourself wanting to be surrounded by nature and wildlife as the years pass.

Did you know it is predicted that by the year 2030 nearly 1 in 5 people will be considered a senior citizen? Traditionally these seniors are taken care of at assisted living facilities and at nursing homes around the country. While the living conditions at these homes are sufficient for health care and basic needs, they often don’t bring senior citizens back to the comfortable lifestyle they once remembered.

Imagine living where your surroundings are in tune with nature. Imagine waking in the morning, when you choose, and through your window you see the vastness of the valley and surrounding hills. Stepping out the door you are welcomed by the seasons of the earth and living animals of that area. You may hear quietness, with spontaneous bits of wildlife around you, or maybe the babbling brooks, or wind in the pine trees, or an occasional cow & rooster calling.

Add beautiful sunsets, like the kind seen on the high deserts– stark blues and dark pinks. The change of seasons bring in migrat-ing birds: Canadian geese, sweet Barn Swallows, Bald Eagles, Finches, Quail, Red Tail Hawks, and Blue Jays, just to name a few. Spring brings frogs and crickets that sing in the summers, sounds not heard in a noisy city. Bears that visit in the evenings of fall, helping themselves to the fallen crop of apples, only to be chased off, by the excitement of other animals! Picture every day, being surrounded by deer and coyote, cattle, dairy and beef, horses, even llamas. This beauty is intertwined with the earth, and trees, and hills and ponds... Oneness with the spirit of nature.

Imagine fresh grown meals prepared with appreciation and care, and homemade foods according to the season, harvest and mood. A resident BBQ expert who’s always ready and eager for another divine creation! Dinner is served family style, filled with lively conversations, which is a delightful end to a beautiful day. Summer finds the seating outside, and food always tastes better after a day of fresh air! Winter brings the sweet smell of smoke from the firesides. Maybe your dog or cat is curled contentedly on your lap.

There is a new concept for seniors for Independent Living. Get back to country living, to a time when you felt comfortable and at one with nature. Maybe you’ve been living like this all your life, now nothing has to change. Enjoy the beauty of country living, wildlife, and a peaceful setting. Share adventures you have had, while making new ones with each day. Reside with nature and go back to the simplicity of youth!

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you... while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” –John Muir

For more than twenty-five years Dr. Carolyn Leaf has been researching the human brain, with particular emphasis on unlocking its vast

untapped potential. Her passion is to help us achieve much more of that potential by cleansing our thought-life of toxins.

This book contains yet another clear explanation of how science continues to prove that the mind-body connection is real. All behavior starts with a thought. Thought stimulates emotion, which drives our actions. She describes it as a sym-phony of electrochemical reactions in the body, which affect the way we think and feel. Therefore, toxic thoughts produce

toxic emotions, which lead to toxic at-titudes, resulting in toxic behavior.

This book can be seen as a detox manual that describes the anatomy of a thought and the influence it has over emotions and attitudes. When we un-derstand more about how it all works, we can learn how to control and change our thoughts, which will result in changed emotions and changed behaviors.

At any one instant, your brain is creatively performing about 400 billion actions. Each of these harmoniously regu-lated actions have both chemical and en-ergetic components that are responsible for triggering emotions.

So when you feel happy, your brain releases specific types of chemicals or neurotransmitters called endorphins or “feel good chemicals.” These endorphins are also the body’s natural pain killers. But when you feel sad, afraid or angry your brain releases different types of hor-mones. Actually, your brain and body can be compared to a prolific pharmaceutical factory producing a variety of chemicals depending on what type of emotion you’re experiencing.

Emotions that regularly release a tor-rent of destructive chemicals that are the most damaging over time are: unforgive-ness, anger, rage, resentment, depression, worry, anxiety, frustration, fear, excessive grief and guilt. Scientific research shows that around 87% of illnesses can be at-tributed to our thought-life, while only 13% are caused by diet, genetics and environment.

Dr. Leaf reports that studies link most chronic (lifestyle) diseases to an epidemic of toxic emotions in our culture. These toxic emotions can cause migraines, hypertension, strokes, cancer, skin prob-lems, diabetes, infections and allergies, to name just a few. And despite all the mar-vels of modern high-tech medicine, these illnesses are increasing worldwide.

The verdict is in. The mind and body are totally integrated, which means that not just your brain, but every cell in your body has memory. If your thought-life is toxic then you have toxic memories physically built into the neuronal con-nections of your mind, and the chemicals that accompany those toxic thoughts are coursing through your body in a series of feedback loops. The long-term effects may take years, but along the way you will suffer nagging illnesses, aches and pains. And all this time you will be deaf to the signals your brain is screaming at you, trying to get you to wake up and take notice before it’s too late. But the good news is that your brain can start to recover from years of accumulation of toxic waste in less than four days!

So what are some of the steps to detoxing? Start by understanding that

your brain and body work together every second, and that your thoughts are things. Understand that most of us engage in a pattern of thoughts that repeat over and over every day. Become very conscious of what you’re thinking. How many “could have,” “would have” or “should have” statements have you uttered today? How many “if onlys” were a part of your internal dialogue today? How many negative scenarios have you created of your future? How many times have you replayed a painful conversation or situation in your head? How much time do you spend speculating on “what bad thing might happen?” So become conscious of what you’re thinking and speaking. It might surprise you.

Also, find something to redirect your thoughts to, something you really want to do or something that makes you feel really happy when you think about it. This activates beneficial feel-good hormones and chemicals which literally flood your cells, raising your mood and your attitude. Then you begin to act out of those uplifting emotions rather than the old fearful ones.

Develop an attitude of gratitude. Be thankful for what you have now so that you can more easily reach your goals and dreams. Focus on happy memories of good times and con-sciously anticipate special events that are coming up. Associate with uplifting people. Spend time with those who bring you joy and happiness, not people who drag you down or irritate you. Hug your children often. Showing love is the greatest de-stressor there is. Research shows that loving touch automatically causes the release of natural healing chemicals in the body.

Know what your goals are and think about them every day. Focus on them, write them down, create positive scenarios around them, and see yourself achieving them. Remember, every time you feel good, you are coming closer to them. Find a way to play as often as possible. Laughter really is the best medicine, as it instantly releases a flood of feel-good chemicals that boost the immune system, simultaneously reducing levels of stress hormones. In fact, laughing 100 to 200 times a day is equal to 10 minutes of rowing or jogging!

Do your exercise anyway, in addition to laughing. Increased blood flow from the heart nourishes and cleanses the brain and organs. And if you break into a sweat, you will also get the added benefit of mood improvement prompted by the release of endorphins. Drink lots of pure water and eat healthy food to nourish your body and brain properly. Be conscious of what and why you are eating. And realize that sometimes when you think you’re hungry, you’re actually just thirsty.

There are additional suggestions which are beneficial, but basically this book is about changing your thoughts, which will change your emotions, which will change your life. It’s some-times hard to see what’s happening because you’re right in the middle of it, but it all starts with being aware of your thoughts, and understanding how they are controlling your mental, physi-cal, emotional and spiritual life. Dr. Leaf understands that toxic

H ASTROLOGICAL ALCHEMY ••• The Astrology of Self-Transformationsm

THE SUN IN Monthly Health Outlook:

SAGITTARIUSBy Robert Ayres

As we near the end of the year a cycle is coming to an end. We need to look ahead and make plans for the future. The mind and heart need a sense of direction and purpose in order for our lives to be fruitful. We

need goals towards which we strive so that we can accomplish what we desire. It gives life meaning.

The modern debate as to whether there is meaning to life is answered astrologically by the sign of the zodiac Sagittarius. It is the sign that rules wisdom and understanding. Culturally, it expresses as religion, philosophy and metaphysics. A modern synthesis of these principles is what Aldous Huxley named “The Perennial Philosophy.” This body of knowledge constitutes the universal cosmic laws upon which all life is based.

There is a divine design and a divine plan that gives mean-ing and purpose to life. In the individual consciousness this understanding and realization is contained within the higher wisdom mind. Each of us needs to actively develop and unfold this part of our awareness. It is present inside each and every

one of us. This is the archetype of the guru, the sage, and the wise one. When this awareness is lively and active within us, we are in a state of understanding how life works.

The cosmic laws that rule this game of life can be consciously worked with to position ourselves to live in harmony with life and the universe. This is the

foundation of establishing true health: to live in balance and harmony with all life.

The Sun enters into Sagittarius on November 21. Every year there is an enlivenment of this con-sciousness. It wants us to evaluate where we are and identify the trends of time that are affecting us. This should then become the basis for our seeing into and planning for the future. Having a plan becomes

essential during the times of dramatic change that we are now experiencing. For most people, their old plans and vi-sions of the future will need changing in order to adjust to the realities of these new times.

Physiologically, Sagittarius and its ruling planet Jupiter rule the liver and the pancreas. Sagittarians tend to have a weakness in these organs from overindulging. It is a good time to do a liver cleanse in order to release toxicity out of the system. The herbs of The Archer are good for the liver, increase bile flow, and work with the pancreas in balancing the metabolism. Some of these herbs are dandelion, horsetail, Oregon grape root, and wild yam. Bach Flower remedies ruled by Sagittarius are vervain and wild oat. They can be useful now. This biochemic salt ruled by this sign is silica. This quartz substance facilitates cleansing and the release of toxins. Let’s get healthy.

This time of year, all over the world, people are thinking about gift giv-ing. Stores of every description are devoting precious floor space to

induce a hurried buyer to purchase that “something special.” Sparkling lights, bright colors and festive music accom-panies elaborate gift displays.

However, especially in view of eco-nomic conditions, buyers are more prudent than ever with their purchasing dollars. No one wants to give a gift that ends up in the closet or basement covered with dust.

For adults, the gift choices often are tools, clothes, candy, jewelry and so on. However, the best gifts are ones that bring the recipient the greatest benefit and satisfaction.

Living in the Land of Overindulgence, many give gifts of exercise equipment - hoping the recipient may aspire to new heights of physical health. Unfortunately, many of these well-intended gifts go un-used— becoming valets for ironing that needs to be done.

According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA), home exercise equipment sales have more than doubled in the last 10 years and

health club memberships have seen a 63 percent increase. Yet a closer look

reveals that the number of people who exercise more

than twice a week has not increased. The SGMA report further

that nearly one fifth of home exercise equipment goes unused.

So, how do you effectively encourage physical activity? Give the gift of classes! Yoga, Pilates and aerobic classes offer ca-maraderie as encouragement to continue. Sports lessons like tennis, bowling, or golf are also just a few examples of fun ways to motivate folks.

Many of our loved ones may overlook their need for a well-deserved break. Give the gift that benefits their well being. Be it a facial, manicure, pedicure, spa treat-ment or the healing touch of massage. There are approximately 75 different types of massage—all relaxing and restorative.

According to a survey done by the American Massage Therapy Association in 2007, more people are getting mas-sage therapy for medical purposes than for relaxation. The survey showed:

• 87 percent agree that massage can be effective in reducing pain

• 85 percent agree that massage can be beneficial to health and wellness

• 59 percent would like to see their insur-ance plans cover massage therapy

The benefits of massage are unchal-lenged. Massage lowers blood pressure, reduces pain, eases muscle tension, en-hances the metabolic system, improves circulation and the list goes on.

Giving the healing gift of massage has become easier with gift cards enclosed in a beautiful gift basket. Most massage therapists give discounts on several treat-ments purchased at one time. Give a gift that last a year—one massage a month.

In these stressful times, physical activity and a calming massage is a welcomed re-prieve. When it comes to feeling good and helping your body run well, exercise and massage are truly some of the best gifts.

People suffering from extreme fatigue, difficulty sleeping, foggy thinking, lack of motivation and body aches and pains for extended periods may be experiencing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Other typical symptoms associated with CFS include muscle weakness, hypersensitivity, dizziness, diges-tive disturbances, depression, and weak immune

system.

As you can imagine, chronic fatigue has a dramatic impact on someone’s ability to func-tion effectively in the world. Often, people experiencing these symptoms tend to take extreme measures, pushing themselves just to keep going. Common ways of doing this

include drinking lots of coffee, cutting back on non-essential activities and taking sleeping pills in a futile attempt to get some rest. Unfortunately, aside from getting them by in the short term, these measures don’t usually fix the problem and often end up making it

worse.

And, since Western medicine doesn’t have any way to effec-tively treat this problem people often don’t know where to turn for help. In fact, until recently many physicians didn’t acknowledge it

as a disease at all.

An Oriental Medical Perspective

Because Oriental Medi-cine views diseases in the context of whole-body imbalances, the first thing necessary when treating

CFS is identifying what un-derlying patterns exist. This

is because the same symptoms require very different treatments

from one person to another.

Five underlying Oriental Medicine patterns commonly show up as CFS symptoms. They are:

• Damp Accumulation• Damp Heat Obstruction• Qi Deficiency• Yin Deficiency• Yang Deficiency

Complicating the issue is the fact that it is possible for someone to have more than one of these patterns at the same time. That’s why careful diagnosis is important for rapid results in restoring energy and focus.

Because the above terms mean little or nothing to someone unfamiliar with Oriental Medical diagnoses. Let’s look at them more closely to understand them better.

Damp Accumulation is a kind of stickiness or turbidity of fluids in the body. Typically, a heavy, lethargic, ‘stuck’ quality accompanies it. Imagine being in an extremely humid environment. This describes the heavy quality of this pattern. Dampness impairs easy movement and activity in everything from muscles and connective tissues to digestion and even brain function. Most often it is directly related to digestion and food choices, although it can also come from exposure to humidity.

Damp Heat is similar to dampness but with additional heat-like symptoms – fe-ver, constipation and restlessness accom-panying fatigue are examples of this.

Qi Deficiency is another way of saying lack of vital energy. If someone’s digestion or breathing is weak, or if their adrenals are just plain tired, Qi Deficiency is com-monly at the root of it. Symptoms might

include getting tired after eating, feeling out of breath when climbing stairs or an over-all lack of ability to get things done. This can also show up in a weakened immune system and in food allergies, both common features of CFS.

Yin Deficiency typically shows up in disturbed sleep, symptoms of dryness, lack of focus, fatigue, and night sweats. Usually the symptoms are chronic. A person with this pattern often feels subjectively much warmer than normal, although they won’t have much, or even any elevated tempera-ture on a thermometer.

Yang Deficiency is more of a cold pat-tern. General lack of motivation, extreme tiredness and getting cold easily are some of the ways this shows up.

TreatmentsA person’s pattern or patterns of imbal-

ance determine the best approach when treating CFS with Oriental Medicine. Most commonly, people receive acupuncture and herbal formulas to help rebalance their system. Also patients receive specific food recommendations to support their overall health and eliminate contributing factors such as food sensitivities and allergies.

The length of time to correct CFS de-pends on a number of factors, particularly how long the symptoms have been present and their severity. Usually it takes 3 to 4 months or more to feel dramatically better, although there will be gradual improve-ments along the way.

One of the most important areas within the study of the stars is the investigation of the four elements—earth, air, fire and water. We are told that these four elements are the building blocks of creation.

In Ezekiel’s vision of the throne of the Supreme Being, we are introduced to the Four Holy Animals, the Chayoth ha Chodesh. These four animals—The Bull, The Lion, The Eagle, and The Man—surround the throne of God.

These animals symbolically represent the four fixed signs of the zodiac: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Each sign of the zodiac has an elemental rulership of earth, air, fire or water. Each of these four fixed signs is connected with one of these four elements. Taurus is fixed earth; Leo is fixed fire; Scorpio is fixed water; and Aquarius is fixed air. Fixed signs embody the force or power of love. Love expresses as desire, so we find that the elements are permeated by the energy of love, desire, and attraction.

The four holy animals, corresponding to the four elements, form the primary building blocks of creation. In truth, these elements are light vibrating at distinctly different frequencies. They possess different energies, qualities and functions. Ev-erything in creation is constituted of varying combinations of these elements.

It is at the level of the earthy, dense, physical dimension that the elements play their most significant role. With the Kab-balistic Tree of Life, the tenth and lowest Sephiroth is a sphere divided into four parts. These four parts represent the primary rulership of the elements. When we examine the human being, we will discover that the four elements play a significant role. We are conditioned by these elements.

In looking at our natal chart, we find that one of the basic pieces of information that is extrapolated from the horoscope is the balance of the elements. There will be a list of the elements and which of your natal planets are in which element. There is also a weighted score, with a numerical value, showing the strength or weakness of that element in your total make-up.

Generally, most people have one or two elements that are stronger than the others.

You want to make a note of your strongest and weakest ele-ments. Determine whether you are more fiery, watery, earthy, or airy. These each relate to an emphasis of specific types of consciousness. Fire corresponds with spirit, which is passionate; air corresponds to mind, which is reason; water corresponds with soul, which is love; and earth corresponds to the body, which is will.

The ancients related the elements to the health of the human being and called them the humors. The analysis of the humors was a fundamental part of a physician’s approach to healing, up to the beginning of the 1700’s. From that point, a non-spiritual paradigm for healing grew to dominance. It is not a consid-eration today, except in the Ayurvedic medicine of India. It is something that needs to be intelligently reinvestigated as it can provide answers to situations that are difficult to diagnose.

The ancient doctors and healers that were established in the star wisdom, identified four types of personality based on the balance of the elements within the individual. These four humors are believed to be related to subtle functioning of the bodily system. The dominance of the fire element results in a choleric disposition; the air element expresses as a sanguine disposition; the water element manifests as a phlegmatic dis-position; and the earth element expresses as a melancholic disposition. These are distinctly different principles, elements, and vibrational frequencies influencing the well-being of the bodily constitution.

For true health at every level of our being, we are striv-ing for perfect balance between these elemental forces and principles. The more closely the elemental score in your natal chart is balanced, the more truly healthy you will be. The more imbalanced the elements are, the more health problems you may have. You want to take a note of your strongest and weak-est elements and know that in principle you want to lessen the intensity of expression of the strongest element and strengthen the energetic expression of the weakest element.

For example, if you are too strong in earth and weak in air then you want to stimulate your mind and reduce your fo-cus on your financial affairs. Read a book, go to a lecture, do a crossword puzzle, and try to lighten up on the heavy respon-sibilities of life. These patterns cannot be sporadic to show results. They need to become new habit patterns.

Below are examples of how these disposi-tions might manifest:

Choleric: hot tempered, combative, rash, thoughtless, bold, brave, active, flushed in the face. Mars is the planet corresponding to this disposition.

Sanguine: optimistic, active, kind, just, cheerful, companionable and of a rosy complexion. Jupiter is the ruling planet.

Phlegmatic: dull, stolid, passive, methodical, lethargic, and pale of com-plexion. The Moon is the ruling planet. Melancholic: sad, unsuccessful, unfor-tunate, discontented, servile and of dark complexion. Saturn is the ruling planet.

From an energetic perspective, each of the elements and temperaments have specific combinations of the principles of hot/dry and cold/moist. They are as follows:

Fire/choleric = hot/dryAir/sanguine = moist/hotWater/phlegmatic = cold/moistEarth/melancholic = dry/cold

Do your own research and find out if there is truth to the wisdom of the stars. There are many ways that this can be done. Be creative.

It can be a natural foodie’s nightmare—the holidays offer an excuse for many to

over-indulge in sweets, treats and everything else they try to avoid in the months leading up to the tumultuous trifecta of October, November and December. Not only will it weigh on your waistline, but the often unavoidable eats around the holidays can lead to issues deep within the body.

Three is the magic number—if you don’t have at least one-to-three complete bowel movements every day, you may be consid-ered unhealthy. Embarrassing as it may be, constipation is the number-one gastrointesti-nal disorder in the United States, and the food we eat around the holidays only adds to the body’s inability to rid itself of waste.

Chances are you have experienced frequent if not chronic constipation. You might not even real-ize you’re constipated as physical symptoms are often non-existent with the urge to pass being absent altogether. Others may experience bloating, discomfort and fatigue. Constipation by itself can be miserable, but some sufferers addi-tionally experience painful bowel movements that can become compounded by hemorrhoids that form due to straining.

It’s important to understand that constipation is a condi-tion that should be addressed, no matter how much or how little discomfort you experience. When waste matter remains in the colon for a long period of time, recent studies show that bacteria and other harmful matter can be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream.

In a healthy body, waste travels through the digestive tract in a predictable, regular cycle,

usually taking between six and 24 hours to pass. Sometimes, however, waste

matter passes through the large in-testine too slowly and the result

is called constipation. There are many causes that can in-terfere with this process. Lack of fiber is one of the most common-known reasons for constipation, but it can also be caused by not drinking

enough water, lack of exercise, ignoring the “urge” to have a

bowel movement and plain old stress. Other causes can include

having a lazy colon that does not contract properly—this can be caused by abusing over-the-counter laxatives. Many prescription drugs and certain neurological disorders can also slow down the movement of waste materi-als through the colon. Fortunately, the unwelcome effects of constipation can

be easily relieved naturally.

If you’re unaccustomed to a high-fiber diet, move into these recommendations slowly. A sudden in-crease of dietary fiber can be quite a shock to the system and can even cause further digestive problems. It’s best to start by eating lots of whole grains, especially brown rice; raw or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables; beans, nuts and seeds. Chew thoroughly and don’t eat too much at one sitting – even of healthful foods.

People with constipation often have a magnesium deficiency. Green leafy vegetables are high in this mineral, as well as in fiber, so now you have another reason to eat kale, broccoli, spinach and brussels sprouts. Prunes and figs are time-honored sources of dietary fiber. Try making one of these items part of your regular morning breakfast. Flaxseeds are a lesser-known but highly concentrated source of fiber. Don’t cook them; instead grind and sprinkle some on your cereals or salads. It’s recommended that adults use one-to-two tablespoons of ground flaxseeds daily, along with 10 ounces of water. Children can take one-to-two tea-spoons.

If you can’t in-crease the fiber in your diet, try to incorporate a dietary fiber supple-ment such as psyllium hulls, Natures Sun-shine’s Nature’s Three or their Irritable Bowel Fiber into your daily health routine. Dietary fiber holds water and helps to keep the stool soft, while added bulk helps to move the stool through the colon. If other fiber supple-ments fail in your attempt to become regular, try taking Chitosan (a form of dietary fiber) along with vitamin C. The chitosan binds to fats from the foods we eat, making the stool soft and smooth. The vitamin C helps to activate the chi-tosan in the stomach.

Hot cereals or warm liquids at breakfast can stimulate contractions of the lower intestine. Enjoy some hot oatmeal or herbal tea, or do as our grandmothers did and add lemon juice to a glass of warm water. Also, it’s sug-gested you consume fermented products on a regular basis to keep your intestinal flora in balance. Kefir and sauerkraut are good choices, as is live, unsweetened

yogurt once the acute constipation is relieved.

It’s wise to avoid foods that are fried or otherwise high in saturated fat. Fat can slow the travel time through the intestines. It’s also recommended to avoid sugar, chocolate, refined flours, processed foods and dairy products. Caffeine and alcohol should be entirely avoided when experiencing an episode of constipation—they are hard on the digestive system and dehydrating.

Detoxifying your body can work wonders for constipation. You may

wish to undertake a three-day vegetable juice fast. Juices that are especially support-ive of a cleanse for constipation include aloe, cabbage, apple and green drinks. You still need fiber during a constipation cleanse, so add psyllium husks or flaxseeds to your juices.

Inactivity can also cause abnormal bowel movements. Start an exercise program and

get your body moving. Lastly, take a good probiotic such as acidopholis or bifidophilus to help promote a healthy environment within the colon.

Don’t fall into the holiday junk food-trap. Experiment with healthy recipes to complement the festive time of year, and keep your body in tip-top shape, inside and out.

Astragalus, also known as Astra-galus membranaceous, Huang Qi, Bei Qi, Hwanggi and Milk Vetch, is a plant native to Asia.

The Chinese name of the herb, Huang Qi, means “yellow leader”, because the root, which is the part used medicinally, is yellow - it is considered to be one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. The roots are boiled in water then removed and dried, often combined with other herbs such as gin-seng, angelica and licorice.

Though the supplement is used pri-marily for night sweats, diarrhea and in energy tonics that are taken daily at certain times of the year, there is an ex-tensive list of what astragalus can help treat: colds and influenza; persistent in-fection; fever; multiple allergies; asthma; chronic fatigue; fatigue or lack of appetite

associated with chemotherapy; anemia; wounds; heart disease; kidney disease; hepatitis; stomach ulcers.

Two key functions of astragalus are its immune function and its use against various heart conditions. One way it is thought to work is by increasing the production of immune cells. Because of mild antiviral activity, it may help prevent colds. Considering the diuretic effect of astragalus, which would lower blood pressure, it may cause blood vessels to relax, thus lessening the risk of heart disease.

How to Take Astragalus:Depending on the form in which you

are taking this supplement, your recom-mended dosage will vary. Doses from one to 25 g per day are usually consumed. Higher doses may actually suppress the

AstragalusBy Brittany Russell

immune system. The recommended dose for adults in various forms are as follows:

• Decoction (strong boiled tea): three to six g per 12 ounces of water, three times per day.

• Fluid Extract in 25 percent ethanol: two to four mL three times per day.

• Powdered Root: 500 to 1,000 mg three to four times per day.

• Ointment: 10 percent astragalus ap-plied to surface of a wound. You are warned to not apply to an open wound without a doctor’s supervision.

• Tincture in 30 percent ethanol: three to five mL three times per day.

Astragalus can be given to children, though, if the child has a fever, they should not take the supplement because it may cause the fever to last longer or grow stronger. A child’s dosage can easily be adjusted according to the recommended adult dosage. Adult dosage is based on an adult weighing 150 pounds. Determining a child’s dosage should be done on an individual basis, according to their weight as well (if he or she weighs 50 pounds, the dosage should be 1/3 the adult’s).

Precautions When Taking Astragalus:

As long as the supplement is taken at recommended doses, astragalus has no serious side effects and can be taken safely. Women pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their physician before adding it to their supplement regimen. If you are taking any of the following medications, consult a doctor as well: antiviral medications; drugs that suppress the immune system; diabetes medica-tions; high blood pressure medications; diuretics/water pills; anti-coagulants. Before starting a supplement program for your children, it is always good to check with your integrative health care practitioner first.

Q: Are pets good Feng Shui?

A: Pets are natural batteries of Ch’i and they can bring the loving spirit out in just about anyone. It is well known that bringing pets into hospitals and retire-ment homes strengthens the health and well-being of patients and residents. As is always the case in Feng Shui, the key is care. When pets are treated with love and dignity, they bring tremendous energy into a home. Keep pet homes fresh and clean to ensure the health and vitality of your pets, as well as the quality of Ch’i flowing through your home. Keep cat and rabbit litter boxes extra clean, dog runs and horse stables need to be kept clean as well. The Ch’i is also enhanced in and around your home by inviting wild birds to visit your balcony or window. The more urban your domain, the more important it is to invite nature in. As much as you can, bring nature with all its nourishing Ch’i close enough to your home to be enjoyed daily.

A superb enhancement to any envi-ronment is the addition of an aquarium with 9 living fish. Ideally, eight of the fish should be gold, with the ninth fish being black. Eight fish symbolize prosperity and the ninth abundance. An aquarium used in the living environment helps to demonstrate using all five of the elements, providing perfect harmony.

Q: Are plants good Feng Shui?

A: Plants are superb Ch’i enhancements when they are healthy and vibrant. They

help us to stay connected with the won-der of the natural world, while providing us with a sampling of natures variety and beauty. They also supply us with clean air. Choose plants with a friendly appear-ance, such as those with rounded leaves or a generally soft, graceful appearance. Plants are often used in Feng Shui to soft-en sharp angles and corners of furniture and architecture. Healthy vibrant plants improve Ch’i. When a plant becomes dis-eased or unsightly, don’t spend too much time trying to nurse it back to health, replace it as soon as possible.

Silk plants, as long as they look healthy and alive, are viable substitutes for living plants.

Fresh flowers add color and sensuality to most rooms and provide great Feng Shui. However, flowers are not good to have in the bedroom, they actually deplete the room’s Ch’i.

Dried plants and flowers are not rec-ommended to enhance Ch’i. They often lose their vibrancy, after a short time. Potpourri is also frowned upon in Feng Shui, for the same reason.

As the gatekeeper of consciousness, the ego has a profound effect upon the expression and

health of the larger personality. Like the iris, which regulates the amount of light entering the eye, the ego regulates the sensory data that reaches the “retina” of your inner mind. For example, if you believe that a certain drug (e.g., Prozac) will elevate your mood, you are more likely to experience an elevated mood when you take it. In pharmaceutical research this is called the “placebo effect.” Our beliefs influence our perceptions. The ego also regulates the “light” that passes from the soul to the outer world of relationships. If it is your deeper calling to be a high school teacher, but your chosen profession is that of a real estate agent, the light of your inner na-ture is occluded by your ego identity, that of a real estate agent. On the other hand, if your calling is real estate, and you do sell real estate, people are likely to perceive the congruence between who you are and what you do. Your true nature shines forth more freely and brightly.

In October’s article I described the process of ego develop-ment. To briefly summarize, a newborn infant has no ego and, though responsive to sensory stimulation, is without conscious-ness and a sense of identity. As the child grows and interacts with the outer world, the ego begins to take form and to differ-entiate itself from the rest of the psyche. The separation of the ego from the unconscious psyche represents the psychological birth of the individual and the dawn of consciousness. Further development and strengthening of the ego involves a taming of the instincts and passions, and the gradual establishment of a resilient, stable identity.

It is interesting to note that the process of ego develop-

ment is reflected in the creation myths of various cultures. For example, most creation myths depict the world as being formed from a featureless and formless substrate, a “primordial oneness” or “nothingness.” These images are apt representations of the undifferentiated psyche of the newborn infant. The psyche of the newborn is raw potential–without development, definition, or organization. A second theme in creation myths is the separa-tion of land from water and/or the earth from the sky. These events correlate with the development of the ego and its separation from the unconscious. Where there was one, there are now two; where there was just the unconscious, there is now consciousness and the unconscious. Differentiation

of the psyche has begun. A third theme found in many creation myths involves a clarification of the hierarchy between animals, people, and the creator/deity. Typically, humankind is placed below the creator(s) but above the animals and plants. From a psychological perspective, this implies that men and women are to be the masters of their instincts and emotions (the animals), but servants of the creator and the Self. Taken literally, creation myths are interesting but irrational stories. Looked at symboli-cally, they offer fascinating clues regarding the deeper nature, challenges, and path of the developing psyche.

One of the chief symbols of consciousness is light, e.g., sun-light, firelight, lamplight (but not a Bud Light). A man dreams: “I am driving down a mountain road at night. It is very dark and I am worried my headlights will go out. If they go out on this winding road I will surely crash.” In the dream the mountain is a symbol of a higher, more spiritual perspective. The dreamer’s fear that his headlights might go out symbolizes his concern that a newfound insight/consciousness will fade away. Since

ConsciousnessBy Andy Drymalski, EdD

the car is an extension of his ego, the dreamer’s apprehensions probably reflect his resistance to the integration of a new and potentially transforming level of consciousness. A similar theme is raised in dreams where the dreamer is trying to turn off a light, or where he/she is trying to go to sleep. Symbolically, the dreamer wants to be unconscious of something. For example, a young boy who was resisting a necessary change in his life had the following dream. “I dreamt I fell asleep and started to dream. In the dream I turned off my lights and went to bed. I fell asleep and entered another dream. In that dream I turned off the lights and went to bed. I entered another dream. In that dream I turned off the lights and went to bed....” To our occa-sional frustration but ultimate benefit, the deeper psyche can be just as stubborn in its pursuit of consciousness as the ego is in its avoidance.

Eyes are another important symbol of consciousness. The “third eye,” for example, is the eye of insight and knowledge. To dream of being blind can symbolize a lack of conscious awareness in some area of your life. Dreams of buying new glasses, or of visiting an optometrist or ophthalmologist fre-quently symbolize the need or opportunity for expanding your consciousness.

Like an eye, windows regulate our view of the world and therefore describe our level of consciousness. If you dream you are in a house with small, darkened, or blurry windows, the psyche may be saying that your consciousness is constricted or impaired in some way. A man dreams: “I crashed my car and shattered the windshield.” Not only is his psyche warning him of the potential for a “crash,” it is also suggesting that the lens (windshield) through which he views the world is inadequate to his needs.

To dream of being bitten by a snake is an invitation to greater consciousness. Snakes are symbols of the psyche and of the process of transformation. Such dreams often occur when you are being initiated, voluntarily or involuntarily, to an important but unfamiliar aspect of life. If you have dreamed of being bit-ten by a snake, think back to what was going on in your life

at that time. Chances are it was a time of significant transition or initiation, such as leaving home for the first time, beginning your first job, getting married, or becoming a parent.

To achieve a higher level of consciousness we must some-times break the law–not the formal laws of society, but the “laws” of our ego and established identity. We each have a set of laws by which we live. They are our beliefs about the nature of the world, God, the psyche, and self. They are our beliefs about who we are and who we are not, what we can become or cannot become, what is possible and impossible, what is impor-tant and unimportant, what is right and what is wrong. Growth in consciousness often involves going beyond our established worldview to discover the laws of the deeper Self. Adam and Eve broke the law by eating the apple (of consciousness). From a psychological standpoint, they left the blissful realm of uncon-scious oneness, and began the arduous journey of conscious development, or individuation. Similarly, Prometheus stole fire (a symbol of consciousness) from the gods and gave it to hu-mankind. Zeus punished him by chaining him to a cliff where, for all eternity, eagles would feed at his wounds. These stories imply that consciousness comes at a price. Gone is the childlike carefreeness of unconscious being. With consciousness comes choice, will, responsibility, and a moral component to life. And yet, the task of consciousness seems to be our destiny. After all, it was God who placed the serpent in the Garden of Eden, and Zeus could have kept a tighter leash on Prometheus. Each of us is a keeper of the fire, and the level of consciousness that we can bring to our own life and relationships will be our most valuable gift to the world.

From Forward Roll...

To Honor RollSubmitted by Tom Boughner

Summary: Developing motor skills is one of the most effective ways to ensure a smart start for kids – literally. Studies show strong links between motor skill development and cognitive development. The links begin in early childhood and continue through life.

Parents want what is best for their kids— Every moment of every day. They want their kids to succeed in the classroom and on the play-ground, and eventually to go to

college and land a good job doing fulfilling work.

While there is no magic formula that will ensure your child has a successful life, there is a proven way to help jump-start their fu-ture—by helping your child develop motor skills. And the sooner you start, the better.

What are motor skills?

Put simply, motor skills are movements that use the small and large muscles of the body. These skills can be divided into two categories, fine motor skills and gross motor skills. The former involves small movements of the body, such as tying shoelaces, moving a toy from one hand to the other, cutting with scissors, stacking building blocks or writing. Gross motor skills involve large movements: crawling, walking, play-ing catch or doing a somersault.

Developing motor skills is a more complex process than building muscles because it requires coordination of many body parts, including the brain, muscles, bones, joints and the nervous system.

How does developing motor skills influence a child’s cognitive ability?

Motor skill development can be thought of as cross-training for the mind.

Researchers have taken images of the brain to learn what parts of it are activated

when children are learning motor skills and what parts are activated during cognitive or thinking tasks. They learned that both activities caused the same section of the brain – the cerebellum – and similar neurons to activate.

This means that teaching chil-dren skills such as balance and con-trolled movement can enhance the complexity of their brain structure. Repeated experiences that teach new and increasingly challenging

motor skills actually help strengthen the brain’s neurological pathways.

The more developed the brain be-comes, the higher a child’s cognitive

functioning is likely to be.

Can motor skill development help kids do better in school?

The answer is yes, according to several studies. Scientists have looked at the physical activity, motor ability and school-readiness of 6-year-olds and found that those with more highly developed motor skills demonstrated a greater level of school-readiness and fared better in kindergarten than those with less developed motor skills. Academic success extends well beyond kindergarten; scientists have found correlations linked to motor skill development through second grade.

What should parents know about motor skill development? 1) Start young. During the first two years of a child’s life, rapid brain develop-ment brings with it certain time periods during which children are most receptive to learning certain skills. The window for learning fine motor skills, for example, ends around the age of 10. Once the win-dow closes, kids can still learn the skill, but it will be more difficult and require more work.

At even a few months old, infants can start developing their motor skills by sit-ting up, rolling, crawling, clapping, wav-ing, reaching and grasping for objects.

2) Repetition, repetition, repeti-tion. Like multiplication tables or the alphabet, motor skills are best learned through guided repetition, to the point of where performing the skill becomes automatic. It is not always a good thing for kids to learn a skill and be rushed onto the next activity. Repetition gives a child more opportunities to experience success, build confidence and develop strength and endurance. The practice of perfection makes perfect.

Toddlers especially can become ob-sessed with a particular skill or activity and want to perform it over and over. Here again, repetition is a positive thing because the child is internalizing the skill and developing his or her muscle memory.

3) Challenge your child. It is healthy to present your child with new challenges and risks, but do so with no expectations; while you may be ready to try something new, your child may not be.

The more that parents lead by example in taking small risks, the more likely the child will be to follow. Demonstrate the physical skill, create excitement for it, provide positive motivation, and your child will likely want to try for himself or herself.

If your child does not want to try some-thing new, accept it, but leave a window open for them to change their mind: “If you don’t want to try a forward roll, that’s okay. But in the meantime, watch me do

it! If you want to try later, you can.”

4) Don’t mistake child development with training for the Olympics. Parents like to identify areas where their child excels, and push them toward that activity with the thought that a college scholarship or Olympic berth could fol-low. Parents who fit this mindset are not thinking about the benefits of activities – they are just thinking about the external awards.

The focus should be on a child’s individual abilities: establish a baseline for what the child can do now, and then reach beyond it to help the child stay motivated. Fun and positive activities foster a joy for physical activity that will last throughout a child’s life.

Where can parents learn more about motor skill development?

A wealth of books on the topic exists; ask your local library or bookstore for some recommended titles.

There are many programs today that offer classes especially designed to help kids develop motor skills.

We are bombarded daily with environmental pollutants, which enter our bodies through the air we breathe, and chemical additives in the food we eat.

Free radicals scavenge our system, contributing to tissue degeneration. Hydrogenated and processed foods, vitamin and mineral deficient diets, hormone injected beef and poultry, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genetically engineered foods. It’s a wonder the natural healing capacity of our bodies can keep up with the challenge. More and more of us are finding that our bodies cannot.

Many factors contribute to a sluggish or stagnant lymph flow. Common to many of us are a lack of adequate exercise, fatigue, a stressful lifestyle and even emotional shock, the physical shock of a minor car accident, the stress on one’s system from cold temperatures and, of course, infections can cause swelling from slight to significant – this is a definite indication that the lymph is not properly moving.

So, what exactly is your Lymph System?Your Lymphatic System is one of the three fluid circulatory

systems of the body. The other two are the blood circulation and the cerebrospinal fluid circulation. The lymphatic system consists of a system of ducts and vessels, the lymph nodes and the lymph fluid.

Much like your circulatory system that supplies blood, the network of lymph vessels serves almost every cell in your body.

In reality, you easily have twice as much lymph fluid in your body as blood. The lymph continuously bathes each cell and drains away the debris in a circulatory system powered only by your breathing and movement.

Strung along the lymph vessels like pearls knotted on a string, the lymph nodes serve as a series of cleaning filters. Lymphatic fluid percolates through the nodes, being purified and immunologically boosted at every stage.

The lymph vessels and nodes are made of lymph tissue. A crucial function of the lymph tissue is generating and storing white blood cells, these are the blood cells that fight infection. Besides the lymph nodes, principal lymph organs include the bone marrow (where white blood cells called B-lymphocytes are made), the spleen, the tonsils and the thymus gland (where T-lymphocytes are made).

Because the lymph cleanses nearly every cell in your body, symptoms of chronic lymph blockage are diverse and can include:

• allergies and food sensitivities• frequent cold and flu infections• joint pain• headaches and migraines• menstrual cramps• arthritis• fibrocystic breasts & breast tenderness• sinusitis• muscle cramping• tissue swelling• fatigue• mental fuzziness• mood irregularities• depression

And the list goes on.

What can we do about it?Doctors in Europe and the Far East have recognized the

lymphatic system for its importance in the prevention of disease for many centuries. They believe that poor lymph health un-derlies a host of conditions, from cellulite to cancer. Yet, here in America, our practitioners are only now starting to realize

the importance of the lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your body’s ability to heal from injuries, as well as, ward off disease.

Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Dr. Estrid Vodder pioneered the specialty of medicine called “lymphology” back in 1930. They introduced a technique used today called “Manual Lymphatic Drainage” or Lymphatic Massage, which is a series of careful hand movements that stretches and twists the skin to move the lymph fluid through the body.

In early 1980, Ed Skilling was the first to build on the fre-quency research of Royal Rife after his work had been dropped in the 1950s. Mr. Skilling is the inventor of Electro Medicine which is used to break up blockages and barriers in tissues through re-polarizing cells and molecules; dissolving lumps and mineral deposits. He suggests that this method detoxifies the body by moving and balancing the three fluid circulatory systems of the body, all at the same time, providing a clean and more efficient transport of nutrition.

Of course, there is no substitute for eating properly (avoid fried foods; they clog the lymph), hydrate the body by drinking plenty of pure water (to help with cleansing), exercising regu-larly (to stimulate the deep lymphatics), breathing deeply (to stimulate the lymphatic flow in the thoracic duct of the abdo-men), jumping on a rebounder or doing light skin brushing in the direction of your lymph flow. You can also enhance your lymph system’s ability to do it’s job by incorporating a lymphatic drainage treatment into your health care regime.

Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated holi-day on the planet.

Yet, do we really know why we celebrate the way that we do? Do we know where our fam-ily traditions came from? Do we know the true meaning of Christmas?

The Christmas tree originated during

the time of Pagan winter celebrations when an evergreen tree, which repre-

sented life and hope, was brought inside and hung upside down. Holly and mistle-toe have their roots in the winter solstice traditions as well and hung on doors and windows to keep out bad spirits.

The tradition of Christmas stockings began in Germany. Originally stockings were meant to hold five small gifts, one for each of the five senses: taste, smell, touch, sight and sound. Embroidering the stockings with names kept Santa’s confusion at bay.

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is when he assisted a father with his three daugh-ters. The three young sisters were destined for a life of poverty because their father didn’t have the dowry to offer for the care and honor of his daughters in mar-riage. St. Nicholas gifted the family with enough gold to ensure their marriages. St. Nicholas was devoted to assisting the lives of those in need. He rendered the

Spirituality & ChristmasWHAT DOES CHRISTMAS MEAN TO YOU?

By Terry Lockett

most basic teachings of giving and car-ing. His joy was in the spirit of giving, the spirit of touch-ing people’s lives and making a life long dif-ference in the quality in which people lived.

Christmas has the capability of bring-ing out the best of human nature. Random acts of human kindness are most common at Christmastime. Out of all the traditions the one that reigns truest, longest, and most complete is the tradition of human dignity and kindhearted action.

What gift will you give at Christmas time this year? What family tradition will you pass along to the next generation? How will you inspire your friends and family this year? What does Christmas mean to you?

Giving a pet at Christmas time may be a wonderful feeling but can come with big consequences. Before you bring that puppy or kitten home, find out if your family is ready for a pet.

There are a lot of things to consider before choosing a family pet. Pet ownership is a big responsibility. New pet owners can expect to care for a new friend for up to ten years, sometimes longer. Never decide to get a pet on an impulse, first consider some important questions. As much as possible, ask and answer these questions before bringing a pet home:

What kind of pet does my family want? What type of pet is appropriate for our lifestyle? Can we afford a family pet—food, equipment and medical care when needed?Do we have time for a pet–training and exercise? Can we meet the needs of the breed that we have chosen? Are we prepared to deal with pet problems and bad behavior?Does anyone in the family have allergies? Will the children adapt well to a new pet? Will our other pets tolerate a new pet?It is important to do extensive research on finding the right

family pet. There are many online resources that can help you determine your readiness and what is the proper breed for your family. Making the wrong choice can lead to frustration and heartbreak.

The bookstore might also be a good place to stop before you pick out your new family pet. There are many great titles avail-able that cover topics such as training, breeds, even ‘owner’s manuals.’

Take the pet quizzes at www.lifescript.com. These can be helpful in your quest for picking the right family pet.

Before going to a breeder, consider checking your local animal shelter first to adopt a family pet. Rescue groups can also offer great additions to the family. Check with your local ASPCA or animal shelter for a list of local groups who may have the type of pet you are looking for. Shelter and rescue group animals may not have papers but 25-30% are purebred.

Food. You’ll need pet food. There are many options—from mass-market brands to organics. Again, it is important to con-sider your pets breed when meeting their nutritional needs. Also, the healthier the ingredients in your pet’s food the healthier your pet’s life will be.

What about a bed? Will your new pet be sleeping with you? Better get down to the pet store to buy toys, bedding, collars, grooming tools, pet bowls and potty training pads if needed. What about a house—does your pet need a house?

Remember, no matter what type of pet you choose, it is a lifetime commitment. There are no guarantees that the pet you choose will turn out the way you want so be sure that you are choosing the right pet for your family.

NATURAL House-Cleaning Tips: Traditional house cleaning products are extremely toxic and regular use is thought to increase the incidence of can-cer. Protect your family and the environment by using non-toxic products for regular cleaning from “Organic Housekeeping” written by Ellen Sandbeck.

1. Use distilled white vinegar to prevent stubborn toilet

scum: First remove any auto-matic toilet cleaners to prevent a harmful chemical reaction and flush. Then plunge all of the wa-ter from the bowl. Fill the bowl with the vinegar up to the scum stain and leave for atleast eight hours, scrub and flush. More household cleaning tips avail-able throughout this issue…

2. Do not use harmful moth balls to protect your

clothes, they are poisonous to humans, not just moths! Instead, use fragrant, natural substitutes, such as cedar, rosemary or lav-ender.

3. Remove water rings on wood with one tablespoon

white vinegar mixed in one cup olive oil. Use a clean cloth to rub on stain, then let sit for five minutes. Remove with a dry cloth.
