Montgomery County High School will host the Gateway Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament

in the Arena on December 27-29. Please join us and cheer on the Indians basketball team!

Teacher web pages are available for both students and parents on the MCHS Homepage under the

Parents tab. Teachers are keeping their pages updated this school year to improve communication among teachers, parents and students. Information on the web pages includes teacher contact infor-

mation, important classroom dates, class schedules, and assignments.

The MCHS Library Media Center was awarded a Kentucky Bluegrass Award book grant. The Media Cen-

ter will be receiving two sets of this year's Kentucky Bluegrass Award nominees. The complete list of

2013 KBA books can be found on Destiny, the MCHS Media Center’s online catalog.

The culture at MCHS is evolving into a more positive and engaging environment. The students are ex-

celling in the classroom, on the fields of competition, and in life. With Montgomery County community

leaders, residents, business owners, teachers, parents, and students working together, MCHS can be-come a TOP TEN SCHOOL!

Congratulations to Brian Wagers for being named the 2012-2013 Hugh O’Brien Award winner!

The high school winner of the Farm to School contest is Madison Gooch. Her artwork will advance to

state competition this week.

We have a published illustrator in our midst! MCHS’s very own ‘Kat’ South has illustrated Will You Be My Friend? This new children’s book, written by Karen L. Clark, was released this

Patch.

Brynne Hubbard

I would love to recommend Ms. Brynne Hubbard, our cadet Battalion Commander, Mock trial team state champion, and now Air

force Academy nominee. Congressman Ben Chandler has recently nominated her to the academy. I believe she is the 1st to be

nominated from this school. Mr. Mansfield, who has been around along time said he can not recall one to the Air Force Acad-

emy . We have had West Point, Naval, and Coast Guard.

Big Ben, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Duomo, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, lots and lots more!! How about a summer trip to London? Better yet, how about Paris? How about Florence? Rome? How about all of the above??!! I am planning on leading a trip to these four destinations in the summer of 2014. I wanted to get the word out now, so that folks could spread their payments over a long period of time, or start saving their nickels and dimes. Also, there is a $200 discount for registering by January 7. All it takes is a $95 registration fee. The trip will be open to students taking AP or dual-credit classes, parents, faculty and staff. I really think this is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The cost for is about $3500 for adults and $3300 for students. The price will go up by $200 for those who register after January 7. The price includes all airfare, motor coach and train transportation, hotels, two meals a day, full-time tour director, admission costs for entrance to tourist sites, and all-inclusive insurance (the insurance is like Grandma’s nightgown – it covers everything!) I will need at least six travelers to make it a go. I am hoping for 18 or more. Go to my website (link below) to watch videos, get more de-tailed information, and register for the trip. www.eftours.com/1374227

The Weekly Word – December 14, 2012

Board Member Reception – Please make plans to join us on December 18th at 5:30 p.m. for a reception in honor of

Mrs. Reed and Mr. Osborne. Their terms on the Board of Education will end as of December 31st. The reception will be held at the Montgomery County Intermediate School in the media center. Let’s show these two individuals how much

their service to the students of Montgomery County has been appreciated. Christmas Parade – Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved with entering

the Camargo Elementary School and District floats in the Mt. Sterling Christmas Parade. It was great to see the staff and student involvement. The Camargo float was Rudolph the

Red-Nosed Reindeer and featured a wagon-load of “red noses” and an abominable snow-man. The district float was led by top Accelerated Reader students carrying a banner that

said, “Don’t just watch the movie; read the book!” in reference to the parade theme of

Christmas Movies. A special thanks to Polar Express conductor Brian Fletcher. Celebrating Success - (1) MCHS freshman, Kat South, is the illustrator of a chil-dren’s book entitled, “Will You Be My Friend?” The book is available for purchase at

Two Sister’s Pumpkin Patch. (2) Twenty-one MCHS students participated in Kentucky

Youth Assembly with much success including: outstanding delegate, outstanding speaker, outstanding bill, bill passed into law, delegacy of excellence, “wah master”,

and Speaker of the House. (3) Twenty-six McNabb students participated in Junior Kentucky Youth Assembly. Their accomplishments included: Bill passed into law, a

second bill passed into committee, outstanding delegate award, and outstanding delegation. (4) The district’s proposal for RTTT funds was ranked 61 of 347 districts across the nation. (5) MCHS stu-

dent Brynne Hubbard has been nominated by a Member of Congress to an appointment in the United States Air Force,

Military Academy Class of 2016. (6) Ninety-three families and a total of 364 people, attended the district-wide casual holiday meal hosted by the Office of Exceptional Children on December

13th. (7) Thanks to everyone who helped make Leadership Montgomery County’s Education Day visit on December 13th a success.

First Principal of The Sterling School Retires – A debt of gratitude is owed Hopey Newkirk as she prepares to retire this month after more than thirty years in the field of education. She

was the founding Principal of The Sterling School and the impetus behind its current success. She overcame challenge and adversity to serve the best interests of students. We wish her a

well-deserved rest and enjoyable retirement.

Student Attendance – The Montgomery County Intermediate School led the way in attendance this week with a daily

high of 95.79% on December 13th and a weekly high of 94.27%. It was a challenging attendance week for most due to widespread illness.
