Christmas in England or Three Kings Day in Gran Canaria?

In England, children (and parents) will be looking forward to celebrating Christmas day. Not least for the presents. But children in the Canary Islands have to wait nearly two more weeks for their presents. You see, it is not Santa Claus or Father Christmas who brings the gifts. Following the Bible story, it is the three Kings or Wise Men who bring presents.

It always falls on 6th January and across much of Europe, Kings' Day, or Dia del Reyes is a bigger event than Christmas day. It is known as Epiphany in the religious calendar.

On the morning of 6th, the quayside is packed with famil ies ,

awaiting the arrival of the kings, because, of course, the Canaries are Islands and the camels cannot swim there. Instead, the colourfully costumed kings arrive by speedboats. After meeting the children , and being entertained by dancers and gymnasts, the kings start their procession around the island. Some of it is on camels, but much of it takes place in open sports cars and jeeps. Even Kings and wise men move with the times. They are escorted by Roman soldiers, to protect them from Herod .

Many houses in the Canary Islands have balconies, but not many have chimneys. So instead of seeing Santa coming down a chimney, you will see rope ladders hanging from windows and balconies, for the king to climb up.

I really enjoy King 's Day in the Canary Islands, but I never found out whether the children leave anything for the Kings and camels, like we leave a mince pie and carrots for the reindeers. I guess I will have to go back again next year.

TIPS FROM YOUR LOCAL BUTCHER RODNEY PRINCE ON HOW TO COOK

YOUR PERFECT CHRISTMAS TURKEY

TIP ONE BUY THE BEST QUALITY FROM YOUR LOCAL BUTCHER WHO WILL

VALUE YOUR CUSTOM AND TAKE TIME TO ENSURE YOU GETTHE EXACTLY

THE CUT, QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF MEAT YOU NEED AND GIVE YOU

ADVICE EXACTLY HOW BEST TO COOK IT.

LOCALLY REARED FREE RANGE ORGANIC NORFOLK BRONZE BLACK

fEATHERED TURKEYS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE THE BEST, BUT BARN REARED

WHITE TURKEYS ARE ALSO DELICIOUS.

IF YOU BUY A FROZEN TURKEY MAKE SURE IT IS WELL DEFROSTED,

PREFERABLY IN A FRIDGE FOR A FEW DAYS [UP TO FOUR DEPENDING ON

THE SIZE OF THE TURKEY. Weigh the turkey and calculate according to the

following table, approximate cooking times for unstuffed Turkeys at 220C

Gas mark 7

6 to Sib. Birds two to two and half hours

S to 121b. three to four hours

12 to 161b. four to five hours

16 to 20 lb. five to five and half hours

20 to 24 lb. five and half hours to six hours

Page 14: DECEMBER 20 13 - Allerton bywater parish council...Vicars Court, The Anchor Inn, Samuel Valentines, Lumby Garden Centre and GHM through Jake Beckworth. Thanks to all our sponsors as

Rest the Turkey for twenty minutes before serving.

Pre heat oven to 220c gas mark 7 rub the skin of the turkey with butter and

sprinkle with salt and pepper plus herbs if desired and or cover the breast

with strips of streaky bacon. Place the turkey on a trivet in a roasting tin

containing 1cm of water and cover with a tent of tinfoil, tucked under the

lip of the roasting tin.

Stuffing the turkey greatly increases the cooking time and to make sure the

turkey is cooked I would recommend cooking the stuffing separately

Place the bird in the oven at 220c Gas Mark 7 for half an hour then reduce

the temperature to 180c Gas mark 4 for the remainder of the cooking time

About half an hour before the end of the cooking time remove the foil to

brown the skin.

Use a food thermometer to check the bird is thoroughly cooked through.

In the thickest part of the breast and thigh the temperature should have

reached at least 73C or if you do not have a thermometer stick a skewer or

carving fork into the thickest parts and ensure the juices run clear. If the

juices run out pink cook a bit longer until the juices run clear.

Allow the turkey to stand and rest for 20 minutes prior to serving.

This method has always worked for me and can be used for cooking Geese,

Ducks or boneless turkey beast crowns all of which we can supply to order,

together with chipolata sausages ,bacon wrapped pigs in blankets and

sausage meat for stuffing for the perfect Christmas celebration.

CHARLES DICKENS

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Have you ever wondered what inspired Charles Dickens to write a Christmas Carol?

Basically it was money he required money to settle a debt. The reason he wrote it

was that his mother died shortly before Christmas and they usually went out

carolling together but owing to the fact she was no longer there he decided to write

a book about Christmas instead[the year was 1843].

Charles Dickens was a devout Christian and wanted to disclose the industrial

victimisation of humans in industrial England. Money was more va lued than human

values such as charity, humility benevolence, mercy and sharing human love which

was the essence of Christian values cherished and celebrated at Christmas in praise

of the birth of Christ.

Ch ildhood experiences and his sympathy for the poor inspired his writing. When he

was 12 years old his father was imprisoned for debt. Charles had to pawn his

collection of books, leave school and take a job in a factory. During this period he was

humiliated at his condition and witnessed the plight of other impoverished families.

This short period of his life had a profound effect on his writings. Years later he

visited mines where he saw first-hand the effect the Industrial Revolution on

chi ldren. After seeing the appalling conditions of child labour, in 1843 he planned to

write a pamphlet titled "An Appeal to the People of England on behalf of the Poor

Man's Child . This pamphlet later became the base for a Christmas Carol.

The book was a success and the great historian Thomas Carlyle went straight out and

bought himself a Turkey after reading Dickens tale of the redemption of Scrooge.

Novelist William Thackeray called a Christmas Carol "a national benefit" One

American entrepreneur gave his employees an extra day's holiday. Publication had

been a great success the book selling in excess of 6000 copies.

Dickens last public reading of the book took place in London at St James Hall on

March 15th

1870. At the end of the performance he told his audience. "From these

garish lights I vanish now for ever more, with a heartfelt, grateful, respectful and

affectionate farewell" There was a stunned silence, broken by a tumult of cheering.

Dickens departed from the platform for ever, he died three months later aged 58.

THE LYCH GATE

Many churches have a Lych Gate built over the main entrance to the enclosed area

around the church, the word can be spelt lich or Lytch is from the Anglo Saxon

meaning corpse. The gate marks the division between consecrated and

unconsecrated ground. This is where the coffin bearers stand to shelter to await the

clergy to lead the procession before the burial. Normally there is only one Iych gate

in a churchyard wall, although Troutbeck in the Lake District has three. The original

Iych gates had seats, a Iych cross and a Iych stone - a slab on which to rest the coffin .

There are many remaining medieval lych gates although no perfect example remains,

many were destroyed or damaged after the Reformation but many were rebui lt

during the Gothic reviva l during Victorian times. One of the oldest surviving

structures is at St Georges Church, Beckenham Kent a thirteenth century gate

restored early this century.

Flesh and blood campaign

National Transplant Week 2013 coincided with the Church of England General Synod meeting in York. As part of a session at Synod, Or Paul Murphy, National Clinical Lead for Organ Donation for NHS Blood and Transplant met with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt Hon Justin Welby, as well as one of the leading advocates for thefleshandblood campaign the Rt Revd James Newcome, Bishop of Carlis le. The Rt Revd, who is the lead Bishop on healthcare for the Church of England discussed, along with other representatives of the General Synod ways in which the UK Church can continue to support NHSBT in their goal to increase registered blood and organ donors nationwide. Or Murphy commented,

"There continues to be a great need for people throughout the UK to

register to donate blood and organs. It is incredibly encouraging to have the support of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop James and the Church of

England, and the broader UK Church. It is through partnerships like the fleshandbloodcampaign that we will see awareness rise and the

current need met. "

Research conducted as part of the campaign suggests Christians in the UK are above average when it comes to choosing to donate their organs. Wh ilst 31 % of the UK population overall have joined the NHS Organ Donor Register, 48% of the Christians surveyed said they had signed up.

Fleshandblood is a campaign to mobilise the church to increase the

number of blood and organ donors in the UK, a call to recognise a need

and respond with an act of generosity.

Founded as a partnership between Kore and NHS Blood and Transplant,

the campaign aims to ra ise the profile of donation within the church and

encourage donation as a personal gift. It seeks to equip individuals and

churches as advocates for donation helping them engage with their family,

friends and community.

ALLERTON BYWATER CRICKET CLUB

The cricket club had its best season for a number of years with the first team gaining promotion on the last day of the season. A nine wicket win at Yorkshire Main saw them finish 2nd in division 3, their 16th win from 22 fixtures. It was a real team effort with seven players scoring over 200 runs plus two with over 150 whilst the main five bowlers all took 20 wickets plus. Four players moved up from last year's successful 2nd eleven including Chris Thicket who took over the captaincy and did an excellent job. Matt Longdon returned after two years out, whilst Michael Wade returned halfway through the season. The second eleven had a disappointing season but had lost their best players to the first eleven. They included 3 to 4 15 year olds most weeks that hopefully will benefit from the experience next season.

The Tuesday night evening league side had a good season winning their group and reaching the final. They played a strong Ackworth side and put up a good show, taking them into the 18th over despite only making 110. Tom Greenwood hit 5x6s in an excellent 42 whilst Michael Wade made 35. The side was a mixture of both teams three fifteen year old playing in the final. The side was led by Tom Greenwood in his first attempt as captain under the guidance of Richard Lamb.

First eleven batting; Matt Longdon 20 inn ings not out 5, runs 448 highest score 75, fifty's 5, average 29.9. Paul Dalby 16 innings not out 1, runs 349 highest score 68, fifties 2, average 23.5. Churchyard

Again, we must appeal for people to cooperate by abiding by the regulations of the Churchyard.

The dustbin men sometimes cannot move the bins because of people filling them with soil. Please do not dig trenches round graves. We are required to fill them in, as they are a safety hazard. Many people visiting the churchyard are elderly, and we have had cases of ladies falling due to people digging out trenches. It is not only a breech of ru les but very dangerous.

Soon people will be bringing their Christmas wreaths. These will be moved from the beginning of February.

Thank you for your cooperation.

A new initiative to combat Poaching was launched on the 1st

October 2013. Tackling

poaching is one of the priorities 44% of all wildlife crime reports from across the UK

with Hare coursing. All poachers are trespassers and it is a criminal activity

Many Police forces are developing rural crime strategies to combat poaching

where the tackling of all wildlife crime and particularly poaching are a priority.

Project Trespass will help in the effort to coordinate intelligence and responses to

the reports of crime.

Project Trespass aims to coordinate action across England and Wales by informing

Farmers, Landowners and Gamekeepers along with Land Management organisations

regarding what measures to put in place to prevent poaching.

Give intelligence to the Police to allow them to target offenders and publicising the

results of their actions such as arrests, seizures and convictions.

Anglers reporting incidents to the Police should refer to Project Trespass and the

Elementary Guide to Angling Law & Fisheries Enforcement which is available to all

Police Officers on the Police Online Knowledge Area .

ALERTON ANTHOLOGY No 79

CHRISTMAS MMXll

THE HISTORY OF ST MARY THE LESS ALLERTON BYWATER

The foundation stone was laid by Mrs Davison Bland of Kippax Park and was

consecrated by Bishop Bickerstilt on March 10th 1865 the church cost £2500

to build .

On the west wall was a peal of eight Carillion bells given by the parishioners

in June 1920 to commemorate the signing of peace on 28th June 1919.

When George Harrison was Vicar's Warden he used to play hymn tunes on

the bells and he had the hymns on a piece of paper stuck on the west wall

inside the church near where the bell ropes were. The bells became unsafe in

the late 1950s and were taken down.

The stained glass windows were presented by the Rev T D Bland and Mr J D

Bland, the Rev A Blair, Mr Atkinson, Mr Cliff, Mr Prince and the Rev James

bell who was Vicar for thirty three years. His window shows the coat of arms

of Newfoundland and Canterbury, featuring scenes of a painting by William

Holman Hunt [1820-1910) with the inscription2Behold I stand at the door

and knock"

On Palm Sunday 1947 the War Memorial window was dedicated and

unveiled [I was in the choir on this occasion). In September 1997 two

windows from St Aidans Church Great Preston [Now in use as a village hall))

were installed at the west end of the church.

The oak pulpit with the figure of my good shepherd in the centre panel and

the brass eagle lectern were the gift of Amy Sarah Stoker post

mistress1918,the carved oak panels were placed in the chancel in 1920 by

Mrs Robertshaw and Mr Herbert Skelton in memory of their parents.[M r

William Granger Skelton who had been parish clerk from 1865-1918) The oak

Reredos was presented by Mr J B Corb it as a thanksgiving for a great

deliverance from drowning in 1904.

The black and white marble flooring [covered today by wood and carpets]in

the Chancel was given by the Rev A L Curry and t he work was carried out by

Ita lian workmen.

In 1924 the church council gave a chased processional cross in memory of

John Harrison aged 29 years who died during a morning service he was a

chorister from 1911 to 1928.

The church council resolved to thoroughly renovate the interior of the church

to mark the diamond jubilee of the parish in 1925. In 2015 it will be 150 years

old but I don't know the name fo r 150.

The gas lamps were replaced by electric lighting and the west end windows

and the smaller ones were wee entirely covered by plate glass to protect

them. The reopening service was held on Saturday 5t h March 1927.

In May 1938 it was reported the renovations had been made to the interior

of the church transforming the appearance. The organ was also overhau led

and cleaned by experts.

The Bishop dedicated t he carved oak panelling, the gift of the Rev James Bell

erected on the organ side of the Chancel to mark the completion in 1937 of

his 21 years ministry in the parish and also as a thanksgiving to God.

Mr Ivor Russell organist was responsible for t his beautiful workmansh ip so

ski lfu lly done. Later t he alter and Reredos were pa infu lly carved by Mr Ivor

Russell which took him 18 months to complete . These were dedicated on

Palm Sunday 1944in memory of Mrs Dutton, also remembering Sailor Fred

Parkinson who was killed in action in 1943

The Lych gate was erected in and dedicated to the memory of Hugh Smithson

manager of the local colliery for 30 years. In the interest of road safety the

Lych gate was removed from the south entrance to the west in Vicars terrace

in the 1960s when alteration were made at church corner.

The parish War Memorial is situated across the road from the church on the

corner of Main Street. The memorial is made of Portland stone and is 22 feet

high. Inscribed on imperishable bronze panels which depict "The Angel of

Peace" and "The Angel of Victory" are the names of 142 men who fell in

action in the World Wars.

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a

Happy New Year.

George Parkinson

I am very sorry but this will have to be the last Allerton Anthology that I shall

write .

My memory is getting worse also I rely on other people to compile it, so I've

decided to call it a day. I would like to thank everyone for putting up with me

I've been doing the Anthology for 19 years 9 months.

By the way if you meet me in Castleford or Allerton have a word with me;

chatting is good for you and me.

Take care all of you and all the very best.

George Parkinson

We would like to thank George for his Anthologies and all the effort he has

put in over many years, his input into The Allerton will be sadly missed by

many who looked forward to his memories of years gone by, but

unfortunately Father Time catches up with all of us eventually.

We wish George and his family all the best and may he have many more

years of reminiscing with his friends throughout area.
