NOTES. Commencing with the January issue, Mr. F. W. Read has kindly

consented to under take the oompilation of the MONTHLY LIST. 'Will Secretaries of SUb-Committees please note that all matter for insertion should be if possible, in Mr. Read's hands by tbe 15th of the month, and in any ~ase not later tban tbe last Sunday but one in the month?

\Ve wish to draw the special attention of m€Illbers to the Special General Meeting on December 14, as per notice enclosed, wbich is to be fOllOWed by a discussion on "The New South Place." It is hoped tbat tbere will be a large attendance. .

'Ye record with deep regret the sudden death, from beart failure, on November 7, in Kobe, Japan, of Mr. Robert Young, Editor of the " Japan Chronicle." At the unday morning service on November 12, Mr. F. \V. Read referred to the passing of Mr. Young, and spo.>ke of his work in ] apan and his services to tbe Society. Mr. l{ead's address is printed in tbe December" Humanist. ,. Below will be found a short memoir by Mr. 'Vm. Rawlings. F . M. O.

MR. ROBERT YOUNG AS I KNEW HIM. The news of the sudden death of Mr. Robert Young comes as a great

shock and sorrow, and the South Place SOCiety loses in hi-n one of its best and most devoted friends. I do not quite know the period of his membership, but he was certainly a member during several years of Dr. Con way's ministry, and until Dr. Con way's df>.ath was his intimate friend and admirer. The number uf members who can remembE'r South Place before Dr. Conway's first retirement is, alas, getting velY few .

T knew very little of Mr. Yc·ung apart from his ass().~iation with South Place, and of this alone can 1 speak. He was exceedingly modest and retiring, notwithstanding his ~trength of character, his activity of mind, his fertility of idea, and his earnestness of purpose. This fact is made manifest when I remember that we were fellow-members for very many years before we became personally acquainted. We were only intimate friends after I be-:ame Treasurer of the Society. The filling of this post very Soon made me realise how generous a friend South Pla.:e had in Mr. Young. There was no fund for any good purpose to which he did not give his liberal support. And he gave earnest thought as well aa financial help. He was full of ideas of a practical nature. In Ihe Course of years and in m!J.ny difficult times he sent me from botn sides of the globe long letter' full of suggestions and propositions, which were mest helpful in solving problems in the working of the ociety. Distance made no difference in his thought of Soutb Place. During his life in Japan, South Place and its welfare was always one of his main concerns, ,md he made a point of keeping himself iu the closest possible touch with its proceedings.

J always think of Mr. Young as a true disciple of Dr. Conway: .lS

one who had, by nature or by acquisition, many of the same traits and characteristics. He h1.d an intense love of liberty; liberty of thought, of speech and action. He was oulspoken in his condemnation of all forms of nppnssion, national, state, religious, or social. He was fervent in hi~ desire for international peace, being practically" it peace a t any price" man; and, ahls (the irony of it), he l o~t a dear son in the great war, making in this way bis sacrifice in the fight against aggression :tad terrorism. A true lever of liberty must of necessity be a lover of his fe ll ow-man. This Mr. Younll' was. He cid all tbat in him lay, by voice and ren, to further every just caus~, to right ever y wrong, to remvve ever y obstacle to perSonal happiness, to social and national welfare. He did all this quietly, but forcefully and with effect.

I t is given tq very few to do more. ' VM. RAWl.INCS.
