By Senator Matt Rosendale (Glendive) Te Billings Gazette recently reported that the

Federal Government has decided to try and balance thebudget by reducing payments to counties that containFederal Lands. See Montana counties take $20 millionhit in spending bill by om Lutey.

Areas o our state that once had thriving economiesand strong communities have been decimated by themismanagement o these lands and prohibition on theuse o those natural resources. Just as disappointingis the ailure o the Federal Government to ulllthe obligation to our rural schools and provide the

unding that those districts would otherwise be ableto generate themselves, IF they were able to tax thosesame lands and or manage them locally in a responsiblemanner. Te Gazette reported in Lincoln County aloneapproximately $4 million a year could be lost due tothe Secure Rural Schools program being lef out o thespending bill. Tis is part o the larger problem that leaves thelocal communities subject to the whim o the ederalgovernment and the special interests that seem tocontrol the use o the land. Over the past twentyyears the ederal lands located within Montana havebeen underutilized and access has been dramaticallyreduced. Wildres have compromised air quality andwater quality. Wildli e and valuable habitat have been

destroyed; some so severe it will be years be ore any vegetation or animals return. Private property has beendamaged or completely lost. Businesses have closeddown and vital in rastructure necessary to the timberindustry has simply moved out. It is time we have a discussion about who best canmanage these lands Montanans or Non-ResidentLandowners 2500 miles away. Maybe the trans er o

ederal lands isnt the answer, however i it is not, surelyour citizens deserve a larger say in the ashion that theselands are managed.
