With so much on our plates between Thanks-giving and New Year’s Day, the holiday season can be hectic. Fortunately, there are many ways to save time and make the holiday season more manageable.

• If you don’t have plastic clips to hang lights around windows and to the eaves of your home, inexpensive clothespins will work just as well. If you’re concerned about the color of the wooden clips, paint them holiday hues before stringing the lights.

• Put a bath mat, rug-side down and rubber-side up, beneath your Christmas tree stand. This allows you to spin the tree as you hang lights and ornaments without damaging the fl oor underneath. It also makes it simple to undress the tree once the season is over. Use a tree skirt to hide the mat.

• Squeeze artifi cial tree portions into concrete form tubes. First wrap the tree portions in twine and then slip them into the concrete sleeves. Each tube can be stowed in attic or garage rafters, freeing up precious space.

• Use empty squirt bottles to make baking and cooking easier. Pancake and cookie batters can be squirted from the contain-ers for less mess.

• Store one or two strings of lights in a plastic shopping bag to keep the strands from getting tangled. Hang the bags from a hook in a garage or stack them in a storage bin.

• Use plastic zip ties to attach garland and lights to bannisters. They’re easy to assemble and will not damage the bannisters.

• A paper towel holder can be screwed to the wall in a craft room to neatly hold spools of ribbon. Simply pull the length you need from the spool and cut for easy decorating.

• Mount a tree stand to a piece of wood with screws or glue. This prevents spills from reaching the fl oor while stabilizing the tree.

• Old maps make interesting gift wrap and are a nice change of pace from commercially produced paper or newsprint.

• Wrap duct tape or another type of sticky tape around your hand. Pat over fallen pine needles that accumulate around the tree. In hard-to-reach areas, wrap the tape around a broom or a fl oor sweeper.

• When traveling for the holidays, use a brightly colored suit-case or fl ashy tape to make your suitcase stand out from others at the airport.

• Place hardened brown sugar in a baking dish, cover it with a moist paper towel and either microwave it on high for 20-second intervals or place it in a 300 F oven for fi ve minutes. This will soften the sugar, making it easier to use the sugar to prepare your favorite holiday cookie recipes.• Save plastic bread ties, which can be used to make tags for the wires on certain devices. Such ties also can be used to organize decorating components and to keep your place on a roll of tape.

• Measure the inside of your picture window and construct a wooden frame to its dimensions. Staple holiday lights to the frame and then easily slip the frame in and out of place each year.

• Hang a live wreath or some boughs of evergreen in your home to give it that fresh pine scent if you have an artifi cial tree.

• Color-code storage containers so you can easily fi nd holiday decorations in the attic or basement.

• Pack for a holiday excursion using a collapsible clothing storage hanger for closets. Fold clothes on each fabric shelf and then collapse it into your suitcase. When you get to your destination, unfold and hang it in a closet so all of your clothes will be at the ready.

Complete the holiday with gingerbread.Whether leaving cookies out for Santa or simply spreading some holiday cheer among family and friends, the following recipe for “Soft Glazed Gingerbread” from Elizabeth M. Prueitt and Chad Rob-ertson’s “Tartine” is sure to please this holiday season.

Soft Glazed GingerbreadYields 12 to 20 cookies

Dough33/4 cups all-purpose fl our1 tablespoon cocoa powder4 teaspoons ground ginger11/2 teaspoons ground cloves2 teaspoons ground cinnamon1/2 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon salt11/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar1 large egg1/2 cup blackstrap or other dark molasses2 tablespoons light corn syrup

Glaze1 cup confectioners’ sugar2 tablespoons water

To make the dough, stir together the fl our, cocoa powder, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, baking soda, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Set aside.

Using a stand mixer fi tted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium-high speed until creamy. Slow-ly add the granulated sugar and mix on medium speed until the mixture is completely smooth and soft. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rub-ber spatula as needed. Add the egg and mix well.

Add the molasses and corn syrup and beat until incorpo-rated. Stop the mixer again and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the fl our mixture and beat on low speed until a dough forms that pulls away from the sides of the bowl and all the ingredients are well incorporated. Re-move the dough from the bowl, fl atten it on a large piece

of plastic wrap into a rectangle about 1 inch thick, cover the dough with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line a baking sheet with parch-ment paper or a nonstick liner.

Unwrap the dough and place on a fl oured work surface. If using a plaque with a design, roll out the dough 1/3-inch thick, lightly dust the top with fl our, press your cookie molds over the dough, and then cut the shapes with a small knife and place on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Place the shapes onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch between them.

Bake the cookies until lightly golden along the sides but still soft to the touch in the centers, 7 to 15 minutes. The timing will depend on the size of the individual cookies.

While the cookies are baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar and water until smooth.

When the cookies are ready, remove from the oven and let cool on the pan on a wire rack for about 10 minutes. Then, while the cookies are still warm, brush a light coat of glaze on top of each cookie. Let the cookies cool completely.

The cookies will keep in an airtight container in a cool place for about 2 weeks. They do not freeze well, however, as glaze becomes watery when they are thawed.

Men and women with gluten allergies may want to avoid tra-ditional dinner rolls, but holiday hosts can take steps to ensure everyone gets to enjoy dinner rolls. The following recipe from Jeanne Sauvage’s “Gluten-Free Baking” (Chronicle Books) is a gluten-free version of a beloved holiday staple.

Dinner RollsMakes 18 rolls

4 tablespoons granulated sugar2 cups warm milk (about 110 F)2 tablespoons active dry yeast3 cups gluten-free all-purpose fl our2 teaspoons xanthan gum4 teaspoons baking powder1 teaspoon salt2 extra-large eggs1/4 cup neutral-fl avored oil such as rice bran or canola2 teaspoons vinegar, preferably apple ciderMelted unsalted butter for brushingTapioca fl our for dusting

Brush 18 standard muffi n cups with melted butter and dust with tapioca fl our.In a small bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of the sugar into the warm

milk. Whisk in the yeast to dissolve. Set aside to proof. The mixture will get foamy. In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose fl our, xanthan gum, baking powder, salt, and remaining 3 tablespoons sugar. In the bowl of a stand mixer fi tted with the paddle attachment, beat the eggs on medium speed until foamy, about 3 minutes. Add the oil and beat for 2 more minutes. Reduce the speed to low, add the vinegar and beat to combine. Add the yeast mixture and beat to mix. Add the fl our mixture and beat to combine, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat for 3 minutes longer.Distribute the dough equally among the prepared muffi n cups and fi ll them about three-quarters full. With a sharp knife that has been dipped in tapioca fl our, cut a deep slash in the top of each roll. Dip the knife in fl our before each cut, and don’t worry if a little extra tapioca fl our is left on top of the rolls.Preheat the oven to 375 F.Let the dough stand in a warm, draft-free place to rise until doubled in bulk, about 40 minutes.Brush the top of each roll with melted butter. Bake until the tops are a nice golden brown, about 20 minutes. If they start to brown too quickly, loosely tent the rolls with aluminum foil. Remove the rolls to wire racks to cool. If you are serving them immediately, it’s nice to put them in a tea towel-lined blanket to keep warm.

The First NoelThe fi rst Noel the angel did sayWas to certain poor shepards in fi elds as they lay:In fi elds where they lay a keeping their sheepOn a cold winter’s night that was so deep.Noel Noel Noel NoelBorn is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a starShining in the east beyond them far:And to the earth it gave great lightAnd so it continued both day and night.Noel Noel Noel NoelBorn is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same starThree wise men came from the country far;To seek for a King was their intent,And to follow the star wherever it went.Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew nigh to the north-west;O’er Bethlehem it took it’s rest,And there it did both stop and stay,Right over the place where Jesus lay.Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three,Fell reverently upon their knee,And offered there in his presenceTheir gold and myrrh and frankincense.Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the kind of Israel.

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heavenly Lord,That hath made heaven and earth of nought,And with his blood mankind has bought.Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,Born is the King of Israel.

O Come All Ye FaithfulO come all ye faithful joyful and triumphantOh come ye O come ye to Bethlehem;Come and behold him born the King of angels;O come let us adore him Christ the Lord.

God of God light of lightLo he abhors not the virgin’s womb;Very God begotten not created:O come let us adore him Christ the Lord.

Sing choirs of angels sing in exultationSing all ye citizens of heaven above;Glory to God in the highest:O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

See how the shepards summoned to his cradel,Leaving their fl ocks, draw nigh with lowly fear;We too will thither hend our joyful footsteps;O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;Jesus, to thee be glory given;Word of the Father, now in fl esh appearing:O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Deck the HallsDeck the halls with boughs of holly,Fa la la la la, la la la la.Tis the season to be jolly,Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Don we now our gay apparel,Fa la la, la la la, la la la.Troll the ancient Yuletide carol,Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,Fa la la la la, la la la la.Strike the harp and join the chorus.Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Follow me in merry measure,Fa la la la la, la la la la.While I tell of Yuletide treasure,Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,Fa la la la la, la la la la.Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Sing we joyous, all together,Fa la la la la, la la la la.Heedless of the wind and weather,Fa la la la la, la la la la

Easy to make and fun to play with, this puzzle will become a true keepsake. Use a favourite photograph, children’s school art, numbers or maps. Using half-inch pine for the backing ma-terial ensures no sharp edges. Remember both sides are available if you wish to make a dou-ble-sided puzzle. Resize the pattern to fi t your puzzle, or design your own shapes.

What you’ll needTools• plastic straight edge or scraper 1630-266• scroll saw 1345-048• sander 1262-369

Material• Weldbond adhesive (or equivalent) 2020-413• fi ne sandpaper 1233-793• rubber cement 5738-650• backing material (¾” pine)• photograph or artwork of your choice

Step-by-step

1. Cut backing material to the size of the photograph or art-work to be used. If you are using the puzzle pattern provided, your photograph may be enlarged on a photocopier, which is what we did. However, it is also easy and fun to design your own pattern. 2. Seal the surface of the backing material with Weldbond ad-hesive, smoothing over the entire surface with a straight edge. Allow it to dry thoroughly. The milky appearance will become clear when dry. 3. Apply a second coat of Weldbond, in a similar manner, to the surface of the backing material and immediately place the pho-tograph onto the wet surface. Use a straight edge to carefully remove any bubbles or ripples etc., taking care not to damage the surface of the photograph. Allow it to dry completely. 4. Apply a coat of Weldbond to the surface of the photograph. Be sure to apply the coat as evenly and smoothly as possible. Again, the milky appearance will become clear when the glue dries. When dry, a second surface coat may be applied to give a harder, more durable surface. 5. Apply a thin coat of rubber cement to the backside of the puzzle pattern (NOT the picture surface), and quickly place it over the photograph surface. This will hold the pattern in place while you cut out the jigsaw puzzle and protect the surface of the puzzle during that process. It will peel off once the puzzle

has been cut out. 6. Using a scroll saw, cut out the puzzle pieces. Tip: Practice using the scroll saw on a piece of scrap wood. Cut all horizon-tals, then all verticals. 7.Carefully peel off the paper pattern from each puzzle piece, gently removing any residual rubber cement.

The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season and they make great conversation starters at those holiday parties too!

• Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

• In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed Decem-ber 25 the offi cial celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible.

• Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassail-ing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifi cally calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specifi c indication that they visited the in-fant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

• Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anony-mously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents.

• Santa has his own offi cial postal code. It’s H0H 0H0.

• The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiv-ing and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fi t Christmas.

• Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999.

• Christmas was not declared an offi cial holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870.

• Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in En-gland was a pig’s head and mustard.

The Greeting Card Association says Americans purchase some 6.5 billion greeting cards every year. Of those, around 1.6 billion are Christmas cards. Exchanging cards is a great way for people to show their loved ones that they’re thinking about them, and such cards make for festive ornaments to display around homes. But when the holiday season ends, recycling those cards into other items can make good use of the paper resources and turn what’s normally a single-use item into an enduring trinket.

• Turn this year’s cards into next year’s gift tags. Cut out circles, rectangles or any shape you desire. Otherwise, visit the scrap-booking aisle of your favorite craft store and purchase a paper punch to make easy work of cutting those shapes.

• Transform a greeting card into a mini puzzle for a youngster or see the project on page 10.

• Glue characters from Christmas cards onto a sheet of magnet. Then use these magnets for decorations next year.

• Frame favorite cards so their messages can endure year after year.

• Turn a beautiful card into a keepsake. Use a decoupage medi-

um to attach a card to a ceramic or wood backing. Coat with a polyurethane top coat to protect it.

• Use greeting cards to make wine charms for holiday enter-taining. Guests can keep track of their glasses with ease.

• Use cut-outs of cards to improve the appearance of plain gift wrap or bags.

• Insert cut rounds of greeting cards into the inside of can lids to create crafty ornaments.

• Encourage kids to make a photo collage from the cards they like. Mount their efforts on poster board and save for next year.

More fun trivia from page 11

• Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female.

• Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped fi nd shelter for Mary to give birth kept their fl ock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

• Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in drop-pings to propagate new plants.

• Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.
