The French department has three new advanced courses for second and third-year students. The geology department has new courses on the evolution of the earth and the environment of the earth. The history department has two new courses, one on the historical backgr9und of current social and political issues and the other an introduction to historical studies. Manufacturing technology will offer a new course in sales engineering designed for persons who sell technical products, systems, and services. The philosophy department has developed new courses on ethics and medicine, including rights of patients and obligations of health care professionals, and on law, psychology, and morality, including study of the judicial system in terms of punishment, deterrence, and retribution. The political science department has new courses on the modern Chinese political system and on public policy analysis of the law, courts, and society. The School of Public and Environmental Affairs will offer a new survey course in public and environmental affairs and a new course on governmental labor relations. The department of religious studies will offer eight new courses on the study of religion and biography, religious traditions in Asia, Western comparative ethics, religion in America, black religion in America, health care and genetics, religious themes in American poetry, and independent study in religion. The speech and theater department has developed new courses in which includes emphasis on concentration, memory, analysis and note-taking; advanced oral interpretation, broadcasting regulations and procedures, American theater from 1875 to 1950, and creative dramatics. * * *

ON STAGE -- SHOWCASE OF MUSIC

~ A Japanese husband-and-wife team, enrolled in the artist-diploma program at the I.U. School of Music, will be half of the string quartet performing the Tuesday (Dec. 17) program of the IUPUI Showcase of Music. The quartet is composed of artist-diploma and doctoral candidates at the school.

Joining Mr. and Mrs. Chihiro Kudo, first and second violin, will be Janes Van Valkenburg, viola, and Ludwig Eberhard Rath, cello.

Van Valkenburg is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and has appeared as soloist with three orchestras. Rath, a native of Munich, Germany, was a member of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and has toured in Europe with several chamber orchestras.

Kudo is a product of the Suzuki method, a Japanese system of teaching stringed instruments that is rapidly gaining popularity in this country. Students learn to perform the classics by ear and give impressive group concerts. Kudo's experience includes private teaching and playing with the Japan Philharmonic and Tokyo Symphony as an extra.

The Kudos have toured the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, England, Holland and France. Mrs. Machie Kudo also has performed in Austria, Denmark and the U.S.

The quartet will perform selections from Beethoven and Kodaly at the 8:15p.m. program in the Lecture Hall auditorium, The performance is free to IUPUI students with I.D. cards. Single admission is $1.

CALENDAR CHECK-OFF

Monday -- "Cardiac Metabolic Effects of Adrenergic and Cholinergic Agents," Cardiovascular Pharmacology Seminar by Russell Gardner, graduate student; Medical Science Building, Room 205, noon.

Tuesday -- "Chole.;v~xin Induced Intestinal Enterosorption," Physiology Seminar by Dr. Gordon J. Leitch, associate professor of physiology at the Evansville Center for Medical Education; Medical Science Building, Room 205, 3:45 p.m.

Goodies Galore -- All IUPUI employees are invited to a two-part party Wednesday in the University Hospital Cafeteria. The open house--with yummy refreshments--is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and again from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Sub-Stewed -- The Stew Committee will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday (same place as last week) to discuss the reorganization of the sherry subcommittee. Ms. Pamela Perry will present a paper titled: "Confidence Factors in the Use of the IBM 360/40 to Identify and Define Cross-Cultural Similarities between Ragouts and Goulashes on the Barley-Basil Reference."

Ho! Ho! Ho! -- Santa Claus plus Snoopy and his friends will highlight the annual Marion County Sheriff's Christmas Party for the youngsters at Riley Hospital at 2:30p.m. Friday.

ISO-- Under the baton of Dr. Charles H. Webb Jr., dean of the I.U. School of Music, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir will present two special performances of Handel's "Messiah." The programs will be given Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 21-22) at 3 p.m. in Clowes Memorial Hall. Ticket prices range from $3 to $6, with a special rate of $1.50 for all young people under 18 years old and college students with a valid I.D.

Last Call for '74 -- The last issue of the Green Sheet for 1974 will come out early (hopefully) next week. Deadline for same is 5 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 17). We won't see you again till the week of Jan. 12, 1975. And the deadline for that issue will be 5 p.m. Jan. 8. All clear?

Plan Now -- It is necessary that paperwork for all academic appointments requ1r1ng I.U. board of trustees approval be filed no later than Monday, Jan. 6, with the Dean of the Faculties Office, Room 108, Administration Building.

Special -- The Fine Arts Society of Indianapolis has arranged with the Grammophone Shoppe for contributors of $20 or more to get a certificate to exchange for any domestically produced LP disc at the store. The donations of $20 or more must be received by the society on or before Dec. 31 (this year) and the certificate you receive must be redeemed at the store before Feb. 28, 1975. Society address is P.O. Box 1706, Indianapolis 46206. This is a special offer for IUPUI-ites.

~~ Memorial -- Mrs. Anne Walker, a vital Cheer Guild member for 29 years, died Nov. 25. Mrs. Walker had given more hours of service than any other volunteer and had received many honors for her service. Cheer Guild members plan to dedicate the stained glass window in the new chapel in University Hospital in her memory. Anyone wishing to contribute a memorial ~ft may send it to the Cheer Guild Office, Room 46K, Riley Hospital.

~--· Sheldon H. Ber~a1 will join the I.U. Hospitals this week as assistant director, systems and planning. Bergman has been with the American Hospital Association as assistant director of the division of planning for the Bureau of Management and Planning.

Named -- ul G. Sch~ has been named assistant re istrar of IUPUI, replacing Robert A. Patterson, now with Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Schnep , an Indianapolis native, comes to IUPUI from the Bloomington Campus where he was an assistant registrar in the Office of Records and Admissions. The Registrar's Office also recently welcomed Mrs. Kathleen A. Faulkner as assistant to the registrar.

NURSING PROGRAM

~Y the Nursing Service Research Seminar is organ1z1ng an all-day colloquium next month called "Nursing Research -- The Local Scene."

The colloquium, sponsored by the Nursing Service Department and the School of Nursing, is scheduled for Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the school. Persons from all health disciplines are invited. A detailed program will be available soon.

Objectives of the program are to increase exposure and interest among nurses in nursing research, to provide feedback to hospital personnel on different studies and to provide a forum for persons in research.
