ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS
SCHEDULE
2019
GAUDETE SUNDAY
Third Sunday of Advent
Each Mass has its own “Entrance Antiphon.” This is a sentence or
two, most often from the scriptures. We can sing it at the beginning
of Mass (although, in this country, we usually begin Mass by singing
a hymn instead of the antiphon). Years ago, people gave a title to
each Sunday’s Mass. The title came from the first Latin word of the
day’s antiphon. The entrance antiphon for the Third Sunday of Ad-
vent begins, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” These words are from St.
Paul’s Letter to the Philippians. In Latin, “rejoice” is
“Gaudete” (gow-DAY-tay). So today is called Gaudete Sunday.
Why should we rejoice on this day in the middle of Advent? The
antiphon tells us why: “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say,
rejoice! The Lord is near.”
CHRISTMAS MEMORIAL FLOWERS:
Sacred Heart invites all parishioners to con-
sider a memorial flower contribution for
Christmas. As is our custom, a listing will
be included with the bulletin, and all will be
remembered in the Christmas Masses.
Please put your form in an envelope and drop it in the collection
basket, or return it to the parish office. An offering of $30 will as-
sist in decorating the sanctuary and church for Christmas. In order
for the names to appear in the bulletin insert, this form must be re-
turned by Tuesday, DECEMBER 17, 2019.
