Saint Lawrence Bulletin 12/14/2014

Citation preview

From the Desk of Fr. Underwood: This time of year we give thanks to God for His many gifts and we prepare for the greatest gift—the birth of Jesus Christ our Savior. It has been a tradition here at St. Lawrence to share some of the parish needs so parishioners can thank God and celebrate the birth of our Savior through a gift to the parish. This list will be posted in the bulletin for several weeks. If you would like to make a gift to the parish, please select an item (or items) on the list, place the money (or check) in an envelope marked “WISH LIST 2014”

with your name on it as well as the gift you have selected. The envelope can be given to me, Fr. Duquaine, the Parish Office, or placed in the collection. Thank you in advance for sharing your many gifts with your parish!

Q: What is that little dish by the tabernacle? A: It is called an ablution cup and it is a glass dish that has water in it so that a priest or EMHC can rinse any particles of the Eucharist from his or her fingers. This is a way to show reverence for the Body of Christ. When it is time to replace the water, it is poured down the sacrarium (a sink only used for purifying sacred vessels that drains directly into the ground rather than to a sewer). It is important to show reverence to the Eucharist by the way that we treat even the smallest particles. This is why the priest is tasked with purifying the sacred vessels after communion.

RCIA – The Period of the Catechumen Please help us welcome the inquirers who participated in the Rite of Acceptance &

Welcoming into the order of Catechumens at the 9:30 Mass on Oct. 26. This Rite is of the utmost importance. Assembling publicly for the first time, the candidates who have completed the period of the pre-catechumen and declare their intention to the Church and the Church in turn, carrying out its apostolic mission, accepts them as persons who intend to become its members. God showers his grace on the candidates, since the celebration manifests their desire publicly and marks their reception and first consecration by the Church. Please welcome: Phil Trice, Deb Trice, Adam Cornell, Crystal Cornell, Maggie Cramsey, Brian Puskar and Justin Wilson. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue their journey of faith. Inquiry sessions continue to meet. Won’t you join us for an inquiry session? For more information please call the Parish Office or Jim at 447-2939.

Thanks again to all of the people who helped out with the show both on and off the stage, and thanks to all of the audience members who bundled up to watch. We couldn't have done it without you!

Marriage Moment—A trip down Memory Lane #9: The Honeymoon. Not everyone takes a honeymoon after their wedding but whether you did or not, savor the early days of your marriage. What made them special? What did you learn about each other.

Parenting Pointer—December 12 was the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe - Patroness of the Americas. Tell your children the story of Juan Diego. One thing that is important about Mary's appearance is that she took on the look of this Mexican peasant. How do I think Mary would look if she appeared to me today?

“THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT, DECEMBER 14, 2014”

Solemn Evening Prayer Our seminarians know that they have a lot of support in their journey of priestly discernment and preparation, but I need your help to show them your actual faces and hearts in person! Will you help me? On Tuesday, December 30th from 7:00-7:30pm in Lafayette at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception you can join Bishop Doherty, the seminarians and me for the celebration of Solemn Evening Prayer. As part of this celebration, Bishop Doherty will formally institute James Baxter, Cole Daily, John Nguyen and Coady Owens in the Ministry of Acolyte, as well as Christian DeCarlo and Jonathan Matthes in the Ministry of Lector. As they experience these ministries they continue to approach the full ministry of the priesthood by proclaiming God's Sacred Word and assisting in more formal ways at the altar in various celebrations of the Eucharist. This Institution is a simple Rite, but it brings them ever closer to being fully conformed to Jesus the Head, Shepherd and Spouse of the Body of Christ! Will you help me show them your support by joining us in prayer at 7:00pm on December 30th at the Cathedral? I am thankful for your many ways of supporting our local culture of vocations! I also pray that you experience a renewal of Grace during the coming season of Advent! —Fr. David Hasser, Office for Vocations
