JUBILEE OF MERCY: MERCIFULL LIKE THE FATHER ADVENT - GAUDETE SUNDAY

“Rejoice in the Lord always.”

Dear Parishioners and Visitors:

Send Your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and Your Church with

renewed enthusiasm…” (Prayer for the Jubilee of Mercy).

What can I do for the Jubilee Year of Mercy?

Visit the Holy Doors around the Archdiocese of Los Angeles especially in Our Lady of the Angels Region: Christ the King (deanery 14), (2) St. Joan of Arc (deanery 13), (3) The Cathedral (deanery 15), and (4) St. John Chrysostom (deanery 16).

“The faithful who visits a pilgrimage church during the Holy Year and fulfill the requirements of Confession, Communion, and Prayers for the Holy Father may receive the Spiritual Indulgence attached to the Holy Year” (Bishop Clark’s Memo).

Pope Francis wrote about the Holy Doors in the BULL OF INDICTION OF THE EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE OF MERCY:

“When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy. Mercy will always be greater than any sin, and no one can place limits on the love of God who is ever ready to forgive. I will have the joy of opening the Holy Door on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. On that day, the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope…

I will announce that in every local church, at the cathedral – the mother church of the faithful in any particular area – or, alternatively, at the co-cathedral or another church of special significance, a Door of Mercy will be opened for the duration of the Holy Year.

At the discretion of the local ordinary, a similar door may be opened at any shrine frequented by large groups of pilgrims, since visits to these holy sites are so often grace-filled moments, as people discover a path to conversion.

Every Particular Church, therefore, will be directly involved in living out this Holy Year as an extraordinary moment of grace and spiritual renewal. Thus the Jubilee will be celebrated both in Rome and in the Particular Churches as a visible sign of the Church’s universal communion.” www.im.va/content/gdm/en/ giubileo/bolla.html).

CELEBRATE This Sunday, God rejoices and sings because of us. We read in Zephaniah today that God “will sing joyfully because of you, / as one sings at festivals” (Zephaniah 3:18). We know plenty about singing at festivals. Already our ears are ringing with the songs and carols that anticipate the Christmas season.

Paul reminds us of the source of our own double rejoicing: God is the mighty savior who is in our midst (in Zephaniah’s words). Because this is so, says Paul, we can rejoice and be at ease. We don’t have to worry, for God’s peace will stand guard over our hearts and minds.

A medieval carol depicts Christmas as “my dancing day” and urges us to enter into the dance. Why all the merrymaking? Because “the Lord is near,” as Paul reminds us (Philippians 4:5). He then points to another reason for the dancing: the dawn of the promise of peace, the peace beyond all understanding, that is now within our grasp. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Gaudete Sunday - Rejoice in God

The third Sunday of Advent signifies the midpoint of our faith and spiritual journey toward Christmas. The priests are encouraged to wear rose vestments to remind God’s people to be joyful as we change our way of life.

Gratitude to the 2015 Christmas Committee

I want to take another opportunity to express my gratitude to all committee members, parish staff, and volunteers for all their hard work and collaborative efforts during the last 6 months: planning and executing this year’s Christmas Event. Many committee members spent numerous hours and sacrificed their weekends to be at all the masses to sell raffle tickets and promote the events.

ADVENT REFLECTION - “TO MAKE” - “TO MOLD”

My mystery words that begin with the letter “M” are to guide us in our spiritual journey and reflection. Week 1: To make - finding ways and elements in life that make us better. Week 2: To mode - 3 dimensions (a) changing our ways according to God’s image; molding is an on-going process; (b) we do not come from the same mold like objects in manufacturing—from childhood to adulthood we are shaping ourselves according to God’s will; (c) during this Advent season, we are called not to be molded or stagnant where fungi can grow in us spiritually, but to renew ourselves daily. “God’s anger lasts but a moment, his mercy forever” (Pope Francis).

With our deepest gratitude to all our generous Christmas Party Donors, Event committee

members & volunteers, and Patrons

The Season of Advent THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

SCRIPTURE: Philippians 4:4-7

(Reader)

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. "The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God. "And the Peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

REFLECTION (Reader)

Joy is at the heart of the journey through Advent to Christmas. Joy in the knowledge of what God has done throughout the ages; joy in the realization that God is able and that God does change things for the better; joy in the assurance that God can enter into our lives no matter what our situation may be. The Apostle Paul calls us a life of rejoicing: . . to live a life full of rejoicing and gentleness . . to put aside worry in the confidence that the Lord is near . ..to lift our requests in prayer, with thanksgiving . . to trust that the Peace of God will guard our hearts and minds.

Let us then consider the condition of joy in our lives. Do worries sometimes seem larger than our belief that God is near? Does the busyness of our lives sometime interfere in

our life of prayer? Does anxiety over the big things of the world ruin the little joys of life?

Advent is a time when we can clean out the inner stables of our lives so that new life can be born, our spirits may be refreshed, and our lives may be renewed in the joy of salvation.
