A Message from President KamasIt is hard to believe that
2013 is right around thecorner! I dont know about
you, but I am looking for-ward to a lile time to getcaught up.
We had an incredibleCAST in Corpus Christi. It
took many phenomenal volunteers andthe entire city of Corpus Christi, but itwas well worth it. Hats o to Ross Ann
and the 2012 commiee!I loved meeting so many of you. Thankyou for stopping by the 2013 booth andtaking time to speak wtih me (and grab acool water bole). I had a blast at the rsttimers breakfast. Danny Forster fromBuild it Bigger was a terric keynotespeaker. If you missed the documentary,
The Revisionaries, you missed somecritical insight to the Texas State Board ofEducation and how decisions are madeabout education in Texas.
A few of the highlights for me weremeeting Dr. Jacobs and the other awardwinners, catching up with friends andcolleagues that I dont get to see often
enough, and hearing my name over theloud speaker to wish me a happy birth-day!
If you havent sent your feedback aboutCAST, it isnt too late. We want to knowwhat your favorite sessions are and what
you love most. Who is the speaker youhave always wanted to hear? What is theone thing that would make CAST yourbest experience? Your feedback helps usplan beer for the next year.
Speaking of next year, planning is al-ready underway for our return to Hous-ton. Appetite for Instruction: Keep theBunsens Burnin will be here before weknow it. Remember that it takes a ton ofvolunteers to make CAST great so con-tact me and let me know what role youwant to play. There are commiees that
work before the conference and commit-tees that work during the conference.Trust me, you will love it! When you

Cuba Bird Watching TourBy Alton Biggs
In OctoberI was fortunate to have been asked to represent Holbrook Travel on a trip to Cuba. Be-cause Id previously led trips for Holbrook to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, Machu Picchu in Peruand Costa Rica for the Texas Association of Biology Teachers, they thought I would be a good person tohandle the money that would be needed to pay for guides, meals, tips, etc. Because not many peopleget a chance to visit Cuba I didnt feel I could turn the request down.
The particular trip I accompanied was sponsored by the Audubon Society. The trip had two mainpurposes to interact with the people of Cuba and to see the birds and other wildlife of the area. Therewere ten people in the group, including myself, and we were able to visit a surprising number of
localities, including urban and rural, highlands and lowlands, caves and islands. The people of Cubaseemed extremely friendly and the birding was excellent. Id go back in a heartbeat.
(left) During the rst day of the trip to Cuba we visited an urban park in Havana.Schoolchildren there are working on a project called Birds in the City and theyshared with the group some of their work to secure habitat for birds and otherwildlife.
(below) One of the primary reasons for the visit was to sight as many birds aspossible. On the second day I photographed the Cuban Trogon (Priotelus tem-
nurus), the national bird and an endemic species, in one of the dry forests of theisland. Endemics are found nowhere else in the world, and we got to see severalof them among our 130+ bird sightings.

Cuba Bird Watching Tour (contd.)
(right) Early morning mists cloaked the valleys of the Es-cambray Mountains in the center of Cuba. It was near thisarea that we visited a limestone cave where Che Guevaraheadquartered during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was in-teresting to see the building that had been constructed forGuevara inside the cave and his bed that is still found inone the buildings rooms.
(left) The Zapata wren (Fermnia cerverai), an-other endemic species, is the only member of itsgenus. This brownish bird was spoed in thedense shrubs of the marshy wetlands. The ZapataPeninsula is found on the southern side of Cuba.
(below) We visited the Korimakao Project, anexperimental art foundation set up in the ZapataSwamp. Talented artists of various disciplinescome to the area to work on their specialized art
forms. The group was treated to a mini-concert by a group that has been making music together forapproximately four years. The musicians seemed to enjoy the event as much as those of us in the audi-ence.

(left) Our group visited CayoCoco a long island just to thenorth of the main island ofCuba as Hurricane Sandy cameacross the island. The windhowled, but we were far enoughaway from the main storm thatwe didnt experience its fullwrath. While on Cayo Coco I
was able to photograph stillanother endemic species of bird, the Gundlach Hawk or CubanBlack Hawk (Buteogallus gund-lachii).
(right) We made a stop in Sancti Spiritus, UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. The pastel buildings reectedthe Spanish inuence, an seeing this Cuban cigar-smoking old man in front of his donkey lent an ideaof the towns culture. Cubans are a generally happypeople and music lls the air in the evenings and ac-companies almost every lunch and dinner meal.

Natural Resource / EnvironmentalLiteracy Plan
The core of who we are as Texans lies in thesustenance, history and culture built around ournatural world. The future of our natural and cultural
resources depends on every one of us having a senseof place and our role in that place. Therefore agroup of educators formal, informal and higher ed sat down to chart a path to natural resource/envi-ronmental literacy for Texas. A couple dozen writerswere convened from all over the state, other statesplans were collected and compared, and the TexasNatural Resource/Environmental Literacy Plan wasborn.
The vision statement encapsulates the goal of elevat-ing appreciation and knowledge that leads to per-sonal commitment.
All Texans value Texas natural resources, know theprinciples of natural resources stewardship and livesustainably.
This lofty task was broken down into six goals. Eachaddressed a dierent aspect or audience: Commu-nity, Formal Education, Informal Education, Profes-
sional Development, Funding, and Assessment.
On January 15, 2013 in San Antonio there will be aSummit to unveil the plan and identify rst stepsand leadership for implementation. For informationabout the plan or the summit check out theTexas Association for Environmental Educationwebsite.
Buzzword Bingo & Alphabet Soupby Kiki Corry
Literacy According to Merriam Websteronline, literacy is the state of being able to readand write. So what about all the other litera-cies that are tossed around like ping pongballs? I have come to interpret literacy as morethan just reading and writing, but having adeep, functional competency. For some, sci-ence literacy is the ability to read and writescience content, which falls far short of what isoutlined in the Benchmarks for Science Lit-
eracy from which I learned to teach. Is there adenitive denition for literacy? As best I cantell the answer is no.
When it comes to ___-Literacy, whoever ismaking the case denes what they are talk-ing about. Or, often, intentionally does notdene it, rather leaving the meaning open toindividual interpretation. In the case of natu-ral resource/environmental literacy the writers
of the Texas Natural Resource/EnvironmentalLiteracy Plan (NR/ELP) describe it as theknowledge, skills and ability to understand, analyze and address major natural resourceopportunities and challenges.
For me the take-away message is: Never as-sume you know what someone is talking aboutwhen they use the word literacy. Also dontexpect them to be able to dene it exactly.Listen to how they use it in context and adjustyour response accordingly.
