2 SPORTS REPORTER December 12 - 18, 2012
Here's a look at each of the newly-elected USBC Hall of Fame
bowlers:
Rick Steelsmith: Steelsmith A former Team USA member and colle-
giate national champion at Wichita State, Steelsmith was the player to
beat in the late 1980s. The four-time All-American was the World
Bowling Writers, International Bowling Media Association and
Collegiate Bowler of the Year in 1987. He also claimed the USBC
Masters title in 1987 and returned to the tournament lanes in 1988 to win
Regular All-Events and Team All-Events at the Open Championships.
Shirley Levens: Levens owns three titles at the Women's
Championships - Classic Doubles in 1982 and back-to-back Classic
Team titles in 1993 and '94 - and has been dominant at the state and local
level with 16 Florida Queens titles, 14 state championships and 12 city-
tournament wins. Her victories at the 2002 and 2005 Senior Queens
made her the first player to win the event twice and helped her to four
consecutive IBMA Senior Woman Bowler of the Year honors.
Sandra Postma: Postma won the Queens in 1995, but has had an even
bigger impact at the senior level. She is the only three-time Senior
Queens winner with titles in 2004, '06 and '08 and was the first of two
bowlers in history to win both events. She owns seven city titles and six
state crowns.
Frank Santore: The late Santore, a New York City and New York
State Hall of Famer, was a standout individual during the heyday of
team bowling, claiming three individual titles at the Open
Championships. He won Regular All-Events in 1950 and '53 and
Regular Singles in 1953, to go along with third-place finishes in Regular
Singles and Regular Team in 1950 and a fifth-place team effort in 1949.
Don McCune: McCune has enjoyed success at multiple levels of the
game. His 10 top-10 finishes at the Open Championships between 1968
and 1974 included Classic Team (1968) and Classic Doubles (1969)
titles, but his biggest impact came on the PBA Tour. He collected eight
Tour victories, including six on the way to PBA and IBMA Player of the
Year honors in 1973.
Tamoria Adams: Adams is a USBC Life Member, and her service to
the sport of bowling spans four decades. She has served a number of
leadership and delegate roles in local and state associations and became
a member of the original USBC Board of Directors in 2005, following
time as a Women's International Bowling Congress Board member and
vice president. Her committee assignments over the years include col-
lege bowling, legislation, diversity, volunteer services and now USBC
National Policy and Legal/Legislative. Email - [email protected]

December 12 - 18, 2012 SPORTS REPORTER 3
SEATTLE (Dec. 2, 2012) – Lorraine (Rainy) Stitzlein, arguably
the most influential woman in Professional Bowlers Association his-
tory, died on November 30, in Akron, Ohio. She was 84.
The only woman inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame was PBA
founder Eddie Elias’ executive assistant and business secretary in
the organization’s formation years. But she was much more than an
office manager.
A brief bio used in her 1992 induction into the Summit County
(Ohio) Sports Hall of Fame explains:
“Her bio lists her as a businesswoman and housewife, but her busy
career since she graduated from (University of Akron) in 1948 has-
n’t left Rainy Stitzlein much time to stay at home. She is a fashion
expert and businesswoman, the first woman named as an honorary
member of Beta Gamma Sigma Kappa of Ohio, a national organiza-
tion for business administration. She is a community activist,
involved in many local and national charities. She is a member of
the UA Board of Trustees.
“But in the sports world, Stitzlein is best known for her contribu-
tion to the Professional Bowlers Association. In fact, she’s referred
to as the First Lady of the PBA. She joined Eddie Elias Enterprises
in 1958 and helped Elias found the PBA that year as the business
secretary, organizing the staff and handling the finances. But she
was more than that. If Elias was the father of the PBA, Stitzlein was
the “mother, midwife, nurse, aunt, cousin and hostess,” a sports
writer once wrote. She continues to serve as executive vice president
of Elias Enterprises.
“In 1978, she was named Lifetime Honorary Member of the PBA.
In 1980, she was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame for meritori-
ous service. She is the only woman ever named to any men’s pro-
fessional sports hall of fame.”
Stitzlein served as Summit County Metro Parks Commissioner for
several years. She was a trustee and/or board member with the
University of Akron, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of
Medicine, and American Cancer Society. Active in the Ohio thor-
oughbred racing community, she served as a commissioner with the
Ohio State Racing Commission for 10 years, and was president of
The Rainbow Company, a firm that represented sports celebrities.
The University of Akron’s Stitzlein Alumni Center is named in
honor of business leader Harry Stitzlein and his wife, both well-
known University of Akron alumni. She is survived by her brother
Chuck Gates, sister Beverly (Jim) Ewing, and their extended fami-
lies. She is preceded in death by her husband and brother Al Gates.

16-Year-Old Jake Rollins 768
In Youth Travelers CompetitionBy Vince Albrecht
FAIR LAWN, NJ - This week’s Bowler of the Week in the Stan Niemiec
Youth Travel League was Fair Lawn anchor Jake Rollins who blazed his
way to games of 251-256-261-768. The odd scores in games’ one and
three resulted from an errant delivery from the 16-year-old that left the
bizarre 4-7-6-9-10 split in each game. Jake took out the 6-9-10 leaving
the 4-7 costing him nine pins in wood on both occasions. With the help
of Hassan Izzard 189-172, Jake’s Fair Lawn quartet came away with
four points, but Holiday II captured game three and wood with a league
best 867 scratch behind anchor Kevin Macchia 204-224-268-696, Joe
Malyack 204-244-221-669, Colette Malyack 225-198 and Frank
Olandesi 180.
Bowler City I moved into second place with an incredible 2525 scratch
set in sweeping past Montvale. Of the quartet’s twelve games, nine were
deuces: Rob Gilbert, Jr. 237-226-221-684, Ryan Perez 230-209-627,
John Draney 224-218-625 and Eric Grabusnik 209-203. Montvale’s
highs were posted by Katie Didonato 191-515 and Matt Russell 173.
In the thriller of the session, Boonton edged Bowler City IV, 5-2, tak-
ing the opener, 886-885 and wood 2700-2698. Strong numbers were
rolled by Justin Puchalski 210-204-603, Karl Kattermann 236-592, Pat
Teshima 226-581 and Brian McGrath 212. Highs for BC IV were Nathan
Tombo 190, Nick Ferrante 180, Mariah McKelvey 170 and Caitlin
Tombo with three above average games.
Holiday I bowled well, but lost three close games, the opener by eleven
pins and the finale by seven in a 2650-2594 setback to third place Bowler
City II. Anchor Brian Rizzi tallied 213-202-595, Frank Magyar 216-590,
Graham Mulligan 204 and Nick Cilento 201. BC II was led by James
Kane 241-596, Justin Garcia 221, Welmer Paguay 187 and Kristen
Kane’s three over average efforts.
The Bowler City III squad enjoyed a good afternoon, winning all seven
points as all four posted better than average scores: Nick Reyes 202-576,
Olivia Wank 199-504, Louis Ferrante 171 and Arielle Wallace 162.
