It can take decades to save the amount of money you need for a happy and secure retirement.

It takes a lot less time – maybe just minutes – for con artists to rob you of that security.

“When you’ve reached retirement, your goal should be to protect what you’ve saved because it needs to last you the rest of your life,” says Charisse Mackenzie (www.saturnwealth.com), a fi nancial planner.

“Unfortunately, there are plenty of scams out there designed to separate people from their money – and sometimes specifi cally older people.”

If you’re a baby boomer who’s recently retired or will soon retire, you want to be aware of such schemes, she says. If your elderly parents are still around, they could be susceptible, too, so you’ll want to help protect them as well.

Mackenzie says there are plenty of things to be wary of, but just a few to be on the lookout for include:

• Beware of “can’t miss” investments. Perhaps you’veheard radio commercials or online advertisements withtempting claims about “can’t miss” investments thatwill give you extraordinary returns. Be skeptical, veryskeptical, Mackenzie says. “You need to keep in mindthe old wisdom that if something sounds too good tobe true, it probably is,” she says. Yet often, retirees letthemselves be lured into these investments, Mackenziesays, and soon fi nd that the return in no way matcheswhat was promised, or worse, it could be a Ponzischeme of some sort and they lose everything.

• Be sure your fi nancial professional is licensed. It’salways a good idea to get help from a professional whenyou’re investing your money. But it’s equally importantto make sure that person is properly licensed andregistered to be doling out the advice they are givingyou, Mackenzie says. The Securities and ExchangeCommission points out you can check a fi nancialprofessional’s background through its database athttps://adviserinfo.sec.gov/.

• Beware of “pump and dump” schemes. Let’s sayan email pops into your inbox touting a great stockopportunity, but insisting you need to move quickly oryou’ll miss out. You could be the target of a “pump anddump” scheme. What’s that? According to the SEC, ina “pump and dump” promoters try to boost the price ofa stock with false or misleading statements about thecompany. Once the stock price has been pumped up, thefraudsters seek to profi t by selling their own holdingsof the stock, dumping shares into the market. They win,you lose.

“A little healthy skepticism never hurts,” Mackenzie says. “If someone is pressuring you or insisting that you must act quickly or you’ll miss out on some great investment, alarms should go off .

“You should always take time to weigh fi nancial decisions, especially when they could aff ect your retirement. You want to protect that money in every way you can.”

Charisse Mackenzie is president of Saturn Wealth (www.saturnwealth.com).

Want to give back this h o l i d a y

season? There are many ways to get into the charitable spirit. And if you need some inspiration for how to go about benefi tting those in your local and global community, consider the following ideas.

Serve a Holiday MealFood is one of the most

fundamental ways to show you care, and, delicious food and the holidays go hand-in-hand. Consider serving a warm holiday meal to someone who needs it.

There are many ways to do this, such as preparing a meal at home and delivering it to a sick or elderly neighbor, inviting a colleague or friend who doesn’t have family in the area to your home for a holiday meal, or volunteering in a food pantry to serve a meal to other members of your community. If these eff orts are not possible, look for a canned food drive near you and pick up some extra groceries to donate when shopping.

Give Access to Safe Water

Give a gift to a loved one this season that’s not only thoughtful for him or her, but also benefi ts the community at large. One great way to do that is through the gift of water. Due to microplastics and other common water contaminants, safe drinking water is not

necessarily a given these days. However, you can provide someone you love with at-home and on-the-go access to safe drinking water with a LifeStraw water fi ltration product.

Helping to reduce plastic waste by providing an alternative to single-use bottles, you’ll be making a global diff erence. What’s more, for every LifeStraw product purchased, including LifeStraw Go 2-Stage Special Edition, LifeStraw Universal and LifeStraw Play, one child in a community in need receives safe drinking water for an entire school year. LifeStraw provided its one millionth child with safe drinking water in Kenya in 2018. And new special edition bottles benefi t the Conservation Alliance, a public lands conservation organization, and LifeStraw’s Safe Water Fund, which supports natural disaster victims by providing them with safe drinking water.

Give Life

Did you know that the simple act of donating blood can save a life? Indeed, one pint of blood is all that’s needed to save three lives, according to America’s Blood Centers. Make an appointment at a local blood bank. It takes just about 10 minutes, and afterwards you can feel good about the potential diff erence you’ve made.

Another way you can be a life saver is by ensuring you are a registered organ donor. Use the holiday season as an opportunity to add your name to the National Donate Life Registry.

Before stringing lights or adding tinsel to the tree, you can truly get into the holiday spirit by fi nding meaningful ways to give back.

THINGS BLACK PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW

Charles Richard Drew (June 3, 1904 – April 1, 1950) was an American physician, surgeon, and medical researcher. He researched in the fi eld of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge to developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II. This allowed medics to save thousands of lives of the Allied forces. The research and development aspect of his blood storage work is disputed. As the most prominent African American in the fi eld, Drew protested against the practice of racial segregation in the donation of blood, as it lacked scientifi c foundation, and resigned his position with American Red Cross, which maintained the policy until 1950.

Early life and educationDrew was born in 1904

into an African-American middle-class family in Washington, D.C. His father, Richard, was a carpet layer and his mother, Nora Burrell, was a teacher. Drew and his siblings grew up in D.C.’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood and he graduated from Dunbar High School in 1922. Drew won an athletics scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts, where he graduated in 1926. An outstanding athlete at Amherst, Drew also joined Omega Psi Phi fraternity. After college, Drew spent two years (1926–1928) as a professor of chemistry and biology, the fi rst Athletic Director, and the football coach at Morgan College to earn the money to pay for medical school.

He attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, receiving his MDCM in 1933, and ranked 2nd in his class of 127 students. A few years later, Drew did graduate work at Columbia University, where he earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree, becoming the fi rst African American to do so.

Academic careerIn 1941, Drew’s distinction

in his profession was recognized when he became the fi rst African-American surgeon selected to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery. Drew had a lengthy research and teaching career and became a chief surgeon.

Blood plasma for British

projectIn late 1940, before the U.S.

entered World War II and just after earning his doctorate, Drew was recruited by John Scudder to help set up and administer an early prototype program for blood storage and preservation. He was to collect, test, and transport large quantities of blood plasma for distribution in the United Kingdom. Drew went to New York City as the medical director of the United States’ Blood for Britain project. The Blood for Britain project was a project to aid British soldiers and civilians by giving U.S. blood to the United Kingdom.

Drew started what would be later known as bloodmobiles, which were trucks containing refrigerators of stored blood; this allowed for greater mobility in terms of transportation as well as prospective donations.

Drew created a central location for the blood collection process where donors could go to give blood. He made sure all blood plasma was tested before it was shipped out. He ensured that only skilled personnel handled blood plasma to avoid the possibility of contamination. The Blood for Britain program operated successfully for fi ve months, with total collections of almost 15,000 people donating blood, and with over 5,500 vials of blood plasma. As a result, the Blood Transfusion Betterment Association applauded Drew for his work. Out of his work came the American Red Cross Blood Bank.

Personal lifeIn 1939, Drew married

Minnie Lenore Robbins, a professor of home economics at Spelman College whom he had met earlier that year. They had three daughters and a son. His daughter Charlene Drew Jarvis was the president of Southeastern University from 1996 until 2009.

Death

Beginning in 1939, Drew traveled to Tuskegee, Alabama to attend the annual free clinic at the John A. Andrew Memorial Hospital. For the 1950 Tuskegee clinic, Drew drove along with three other black physicians. Drew was driving around 8 a.m. on April 1. Still fatigued from spending the night before in the operating theater, he lost control of the vehicle. After careening into a fi eld, the car somersaulted three times. The three other physicians suff ered minor injuries. Drew was trapped with serious wounds; his foot had become wedged beneath the brake pedal. When reached by emergency technicians, he was in shock and barely alive due to severe leg injuries.

Drew was taken to Alamance General Hospital in Burlington, North Carolina. He was pronounced dead a half hour after he fi rst received medical attention. Drew’s funeral was held on April 5, 1950, at the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.

Despite a popular myth to the contrary, once repeated on an episode of the hit TV series M*A*S*H, Drew’s death was not the result of his having been refused a blood transfusion because of his skin color. This myth spread very quickly since during his time it was very common for blacks to be refused treatment because there were not enough “Negro beds” available or the nearest hospital only serviced whites. In truth, according to one of the passengers in Drew’s car, John Ford, Drew’s injuries were so severe that virtually nothing could have been done to save him. Ford added that a blood transfusion might have actually killed Drew sooner.

HOLIDAY SEASON3 Ways to Give Back This

Holiday Season

Kids First Initiative Holiday Meals Experience PROVIDING A EXPERIENCE THEY WILL NEVER FORGET It is with great pleasure that I announce Kids First Initiative Holiday Meals Experience. Over the

past 12 years KFI has hand delivered thousands of meals to kids and their families in nineteen states, three countries and one U.S. territory. Starting in November 2018 we will be traveling over 8,000 miles, making stops in 11 locations in the United States, Canada and Haiti all to deliver meals and some holiday joy..... to kids and their families. On Tuesday, December 4, KFI Holiday Meals Experience will be making a stop in the wonderful city of Jacksonville, FL at 3:30 PM.

The Kids First Initiative (KFI) is a progressive grassroots organization that is actively working to help break the cycle of poverty by providing young people with vital resources that will ensure them a more successful life. According to famed psychologist Abraham Maslow, there are four basic human physiological needs that are not only the foundation for motivation, but serve as precursors to one living a successful life. These four needs are warmth, rest, water, and food. Unfortunately, there are children in every county in the United States who not only wake up hungry, but attend school and go to bed hungry on a daily basis. The United States Department of Agriculture states that there are 13.1 million American children who reside in homes that are food insecure. Studies show that children who are food insecure have a tendency to participate less, both inside and outside of the classroom.

“HBCU dancers are some of the hardest working women on the yard, and they give their all in every performance. Their skill and on-the-field radiance shined in every #RadiantDanceOff submission we received so choosing just one winning team was a huge challenge,” says Keelia Brown, founder of HBCU Dance Corporation, Inc. “The #RadiantDanceOff competition shines a light on the confidence and talent of the amazing

women on the teams, and the prize from The Tampax and Always Radiant Collection will help them keep dancing.”

This was the second annual #RadiantDanceOff contest, a national online dance competition designed exclusively for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Created in 2017, the contest was designed to change the fact that African-American women avoid activities like dancing, and even compromise their style during their periods1. The contest highlights the bold moves and fierce styles worn by HBCU dance lines to show women everywhere that they can wear and do whatever they want with confidence, any day of the month, and showcases the incredible skill of majorettes across the country.

This homecoming season, eligible HBCU dance teams competed to earn one of the top five spots in the #RadiantDanceOff competition. As per last year’s program, eligible teams entered by submitting a two-minute video that was voted on by fans, alumni and students, along with a short essay highlighting why their team runs the yard. A panel then judged the five dance teams with the highest number of votes on:

Difficulty of dance steps, cohesiveness and technical proficiency

Originality of dance performanceCreative execution of wardrobe selection

Ability to convey character and expression in the dance

Essay submission“The Tampax and Always Radiant

Collection is all about giving women the freedom to be the fiercest version of themselves any day of the month,” says Melissa Suk, Brand Director, North America Feminine Care at Procter & Gamble. “The women of Howard University radiate confidence every day, and we’re happy we can help them shine even brighter on the field.”

By: W. Earl Kitchings

The Raines defense continued to show their dominance in the 2018 FHSAA Playoffs with a stern defeat of West Nassau High, to win their second consecutive 4A Regional Championship in a 42-0 shutout at Earl S. Kitchings Stadium.

With less than 50 seconds gone in the first quarter, Uriah Ratliff picked up a Warrior fumble at the six yard line and scored his second defensive touchdown of the year. From that point, the Vikings defense played a very disciplined game, taking two turnovers and scoring on both in the second half. Senior linebacker Aric Horne picked off a Dallas Mumford pass, and returned it 32 yards for a score. Three minutes later, linebacker Janorris Robertson scooped up another Warrior fumble, and took it 68 yards for the final score of the game. Allowing a total of 113 yards (89 yards rushing, 24 yards passing) of total offense yards on the night, it was the second consecutive game Raines has allowed less than 120 yards, while holding its sixth opponent to less than 10 points this year.

Using a potent double wing-T offense that came into

the game averaging 226 yards per game, West Nassau (9-3) attempted 38 carries, and crossed midfield only three times in the entire game, with their deepest penetration being inside the Raines 25 yard line. However, as they have done in most of the games this season, the Viking’s defense refused to yield further opportunities, as the defensive line kept constant pressure on the Warriors. Other defensive standouts were Javon Bonsell, Jamon Goodwin, Trayvon Hobbs, and James Tarver (1 Int.). On the night, Raines had 5 takeaways, including three fumble recoveries, and two interceptions.

Punt return specialist Davarius Thomas had another outstanding game, returning one punt for a 56 yard score in the third quarter, giving Raines a 28-0 lead. That return tied former Raines great Lito Sheppard for four punt returns for touchdowns in a single season. In the second quarter, Thomas almost tied the single season record of five punt returns for a touchdown set by Willie Wright in 2015, had it not been for the West Nassau punter slipping in between a couple of Vikings players to make the tackle.

While the Raines defense

utilize their opportunities to score, the Viking’s offense did manage two scores in the second quarter to give them a 21-0 lead going into the half. Quarterback Barron Coates (3-10-1, 74 yards, 1 TD) found Davian Holliman on a 32 yard strike at the 3:24 mark. In less than two minutes, Brandon Marshall scored his 22nd touchdown of the season, with a 12 yard run. Nigel Smith was perfect on the night with 6 PAT’s.

Marshall’s score tied his record from 2017. His 122 yards pushed his season total to 1,593 yards, and moved his closer to the 4,000 yard, giving him 3,900 career rushing yards. He also increased his career point total to 332 points.

The Vikings (11-1) find themselves in the same situation they were in a year ago. With one more game against Dunnellon, another win, will earn them another trip to Orlando for the state championship against Ft. Lauderdale University High, or, in a rematch of the 2017 game against Cocoa. With this team playing “championship football” it probably won’t matter to Coach Deran Wiley who the next opponent is, as long as the game is in “O-Town”.

Ebony Magazine Releases Its Ebony Power 100 Issue Featuring Michelle Obama

EBONY magazine unveils its highly anticipated December 2018/January 2019 EBONY Power 100 issue, featuring the celebrated icon for women across the globe, Michelle Obama. The former first lady opens up to journalist Miles Marshall Lewis about her passions, trials and tribulations as today’s most accomplished custodian of female empowerment and philanthropy, while sharing her journey toward completing her first memoir, Becoming.

“You learn to be grateful for what you have. You learn to find the good in things. From our vantage point as Black women, we spend a lot of time looking upward,” Mrs. Obama says during her in-depth interview.

Michelle Obama talks about her upbringing in Chicago and her time as an Ivy School leaguer at Princeton, before entering the White House with her husband—both of whom lead the Entertainment & Arts category as honorees in this year’s EBONY Power 100 List. Michelle gives a candid account about her decision to not run as

a politician and why politics is simply not her cup of tea. Also featured in this issue is an exclusive and effervescent fashion photo shoot with the cast of Pose, the dance musical drama on FX. A striking and colorful eight-page spread for the New Year shows a stylish cast from the series, which includes Billy Porter, Dominique Jackson, Mj Rodriguez, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Indya Moore and Dyllón Burnside—all captured in their own playful mood.

“I cannot think of a better way to end the year than with a uniquely revealing and eloquently candid interview with one of today’s foremost pioneers of social indoctrination and women’s empowerment,” says EBONY Media Operations CEO Michael Gibson. “After

reading our in-depth interview, it will undoubtedly give you the urge to buy Michelle’s first memoir. Giving this winter’s must-see issue a stunning contrast is the rather bubbly photo shoot with the colorful cast of Pose—whose individual characters come to life in our exclusive fashion editorial. We may even be lucky enough to see members of the cast at this year’s EBONY Power 100 Gala.”

The Full Armor Of GodBy Linda D’ Nise

As I was seeking to achieve a right-sized body through principled eating and lifestyle change I was entering into this foreign “principled eating” environment. I found I had to learn to use new approaches to manage the emotional disturbances. I had to completely abandon those approaches that I once relied on to get through. Before taking on this journey of principled eating I could only rely on sugar, flour and excess quantities to soothe the uncomfortable feelings. Now, in this new structured and principled eating environment, when the winds of emotion blow, I had to have a new and reliable means to achieve comfort. When I didn’t have knowledge of and ready immediate access to these reliable means, I was in jeopardy of crashing into the reliance on the old and damaging fixes. Thus I was not ever able to achieve the goals I sought successfully and enduringly.

The emotional disturbances are unpredictable yet their erratic surfacing in the calm experience are sure to consistently manifest, and without warning. The individual can do nothing to stop these disturbances from surfacing. All he can do is develop a constant protection from whatever disturbance may come about.

The prayer that goes up to God petitioning, “God please don’t let anything bad happen today” is a vain and unreasonable request. God never promised me that no temptations or seeming stumbling blocks to thwart my progress would come my way. What He provides me is a protective armor to weather the bad experiences when it appears they come upon me. This protective armor is a mental/spiritual positioning, an unwavering reliance on Him.

This is how the Scriptures address this: Ephesians 6:11-18, “Put on the whole armour

of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

I applied this Scripture like this: Put on the whole armour of God [utilize all of the tools of the GSF Program], that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devils [that I will not fall to the temptations of the latest fads to manage weight]. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood [getting the latest food plan that offers the quickest weight management is not what challenges me], but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places [the challenge for me is to not yield to the temptations in the media, from friends, from my own calculations, imaginations and appetites that seduce me to stray from the divinely safe and intelligent road to enduring health and peaceful sanity]. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God [keep the principles of the program central in my thought and be mindful to use the tools consistently], that ye may be able to withstand the evil day [that when strong temptation comes my way, I will be

fortified against it], and having done all, to stand [and having done everything available to me to stay abstinent, I shall survive the temptation and remain abstinent].

Dear VS,I am flying out of town

on a business trip. I will be staying at a hotel and needing to eat out. How do I manage being on the GSF plan on this business trip?

Jet Setter, Durham, N.C.

Dear JS, I found it crucial to plan at

least a week or more ahead if I am planning an out of town trip. The first thing I do is make sure that the hotel at which I shall be staying has a microwave and a refrigerator. I find out where the nearest grocery and convenience stores are. I am also sure to arrange for my easy transportation to get to my principled nutrition. If I must eat at a restaurant I follow the rules I outline in the section of this book, What is Wrong With Eating At A Restaurant?

Dear VS,Won’t I look older and more

wrinkled if I lose a lot of weight?

Aging Gracefully, Memphis, TN

Dear AG,I was advised that I would

look older and more wrinkled should I lose a lot of weight. My goal was more about detoxing my body from all sugar and flour. The weight loss was a natural and guaranteed side effect that occurred when I eliminated these dangerous elements. Amazingly, I looked much younger when the weight dissipated. I want to look like whatever it is that God originally designed me to look like. I am confident that when I am obedient to God’s universal divine principles, I can only reflect beauty and grace. I have no desire to comply with any other standards.

ADVICE

First Black Woman To Lead Harvard To Show Students Of Color They’re Not AloneBy Kimberley Richards

A black woman will lead Harvard University’s prestigious student newspaper for the first time since it was founded in 1873.

Kristine E. Guillaume, 20, made history as the newly elected president of The Harvard Crimson. Her upcoming post has made headlines since it was announced earlier this month and comes amid increased media scrutiny over the way black female reporters are treated – particularly by President Donald Trump.

The Harvard junior, majoring in history, literature and African-American studies, says she is proud to have been named the first female black president of The Crimson. She hopes her new position will help encourage other people of color who are “navigating institutionally white and male spaces.”

“I feel really lucky to be taking on The Crimson at this time and to show other people of color you are not the only one — because so often you are the only one,” she added.

Guillaume, from Queens, New York, said prior to

Harvard, she was heavily involved with the student newspaper at her high school and eventually worked her way up to becoming the editor-in-chief of its literary magazine.

She had her sights set on attending Harvard, and The Crimson had been a “major part of that ambition,” she said.

Born to a Chinese mother and Haitian father, both immigrants and physicians, Guillaume said her parents instilled in her the importance of knowing what’s going on around the world outside of her “own personal bubble.”

The 20-year-old has served as one of the chairs for The Crimson’s Diversity and Inclusivity committee, aimed

at making the newspaper more welcoming to students from all backgrounds, The Crimson reported.

“Kristine’s previous work with the Diversity and Inclusivity Committee has demonstrated her commitment and dedication to ensuring our editors — regardless of identity or background — find a home at 14 Plympton St,” said the paper’s current president Derek Xiao in an interview with the Boston Globe earlier this month.

Xiao also commended Guillaume’s goals to build the paper’s “digital storytelling” and her business plans to “scale the organization’s alternative revenue streams” to secure financial stability.

PEGGY A. QUINCE, Florida’s fi rst female African-American Supreme Court Justice

retires after twenty years of service on the state’s highest court. A celebration of Justice Quince’s notable service and career will be held at Innisbrook Resort & Spa located at 36750 US Highway 19 North, Palm Harbor, Florida on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 6:00 PM. A judicial tribute to Florida’s African American judiciary will be included as part of the celebration.

Prior to her Supreme Court appointment by Governor Lawton Chiles and Governor-elect Jeb Bush in December 1998, Quince also held the distinction of being Florida’s fi rst female African-American District Court Judge, having served on the Second District Court of Appeal from 1993 to 1998. Quince’s judicial appointments were preceded by her career of public service which included more than thirteen years as Assistant Attorney General (Criminal Division) handling numerous appeals and presenting oral argument before the Second District Court of Appeal, the Florida Supreme Court, the Eleventh Circuit

Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Quince served as Tampa’s Bureau Chief for three of those years.

Quince is a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Quince’s civic and community affi liations included Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Jack and Jill of America, Inc.; the NAACP; The Links, Inc. and the Urban League. Quince’s interests and plans after retirement include world travel and service on an independent review panel regarding claims of innocence by persons convicted in Hillsborough County, Florida.

The American C i v i l L i b e r t i e s

Union, the ACLU of Florida, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) today fi led an administrative complaint with the Florida Department of Education on behalf of the family of Clinton (C.J.) Stanley Jr., a six-year-old Afr ican-Amer ican boy who was enrolled at A Book’s Christian Academy in Apopka, Florida. A Book’s denied C.J. entry to his fi rst day of school because he wears his hair in locs which go past his ears.

In kicking C.J. out of school on his fi rst day, A Book’s cited a discriminatory school policy that prohibits certain hairstyles that target and disproportionately penalize Black students. The complaint argues that because A Book’s receives public funding, its policy violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

C.J. was enrolled at A Book’s through a publicly funded scholarship program. He arrived for the fi rst day of school at A Book’s on August 13, 2018, only to be told that he could not attend school because his hair extended below his ears and was styled in locs. A Book’s handbook prohibits boys from wearing “dreads” and requires boys’ hair to be “tapered cut, off the collar and ears.”

“By stigmatizing students of color and preventing them from going to school, hair policies like A Book’s serve only to harm students like C.J.,” said LDF Assistant Counsel Angel Harris. “Florida has a responsibility

to ensure that any schools receiving public funding comply with federal civil rights laws. We urge the state Department of Education to take steps necessary to prevent other children from enduring an ordeal similar to C.J.’s.”

“No child should be humiliated and deprived of an education because of how they wear their hair,” said Nancy Abudu, legal director of the ACLU of Florida. “C.J.’s school – and the state Department of Education – should take steps to avoid subjecting other current and future students to this trauma. Racial equity must be considered in all school policies.”

A Season Worth

Fighting For

By Michael JenningsSports Photo Journalist

Last week, from Pop Warner to high school, I just have to throw it all in one pot and make a full course meal. We’ll start this entrée out on Hammond Blvd. where the BOLLES BULLDOGS TOOK ON TRINITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY. These two 5A private school powerhouses clashed to see who would move forward in the playoffs. Trinity’s RB #3 Marcus Crowley (Ohio State commit) would be too much for the bulldogs as he seemed to be a grown man amongst boys; leading the Conquerors to a 34-7 victory. Now, I don’t know if it was Trinity Christian winning 4 times in the last 2 years that had Bolles so salty. But, they didn’t come to shake hands after the game. Maybe it was the downpour of rain that Friday night, but that’s neither here nor there. I’ll just stay on the positive. And, just like the

ever so popular 80’s hit by Milli Vanilli goes, I’ll just “Blame it on the Rain.”

Two Jacksonville Pop Warner teams traveled to Orlando to face the Miami Goulds in a regional playoff showdown to represent Florida in Disney for the Nationals Tournament. The Jr. Pee Wee Sweetwater Ravens fell short! Not even the game planning and experience of Ravens coach Mike Lundy could overcome young phenom #3 Daniel Harper (aka Big Man) of the Goulds. In an interview, Lundy raved of the young stallion saying, “He had the sweetest feet I’ve ever seen at the Jr. Pee Wee level in Pop Warner.” Next season Lundy will be moving up to Pee Wee for another run at a national championship.

The future of Pop Warner in Duval County are the Westside Wildcats Pee Wee team. They put on for the city as they defeated the Miami Goulds to take a trip to Disney for the 1st time in franchise

history. I give much props to the Westside organization, because defeating the Goulds speaks volumes. Most teams out of Dade County face stiff competition all season. When you come out of Miami, your team is battle tested. I look to see the team in BLUE to make a great push for their 1st National Championship.

Moving to the Westside of Jax, the Edgewater Eagles came to

town and dominated Lee High 41 to 7 - ending their season. Them Moncrief boys, Raines High, was triumphant and will continue their season; defeating West Nassua 42-0. The posse across the Buckman Bridge, the Mandarin Mustangs that is, handled business.

They travelled to Wekiva winning 19-7 and will be able to continue their quest for a State Championship.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started their game in usual fashion last Sunday up in Orchard Park, NY,(from behind) as they trailed

the Buffalo Bills 14-0 in the 1st half. I’ll have to admit, even with the Jags down in the dumps and on a losing streak this season, the team in all black showed a lot of fight was left in the tank. Unlike most teams that are down early in the game, the Jags abandoned the pass attack (which is not surprising with Blake Bortles at QB) and made it on, with a dog fight in the trenches as they ran the ball on 16 of 17 plays over the next two drives. It seemed that the Bills defense were literally just standing around the way Jags RB Leonard Fournette went to running rapid, and rumbling up 18 carries for 95 yards. Jax tied the game at 14 and drove the ball all the way to the Bills 1 yard line for the go ahead score then the bottom fell out and the unthinkable happened. Jacksonville’s best player Leonard Fournette, and the only hope of a victory, was over on the sideline fighting and throwing elbows with Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson. Westbrook scored a TD on a screen play that was called back because of a holding penalty. Starting guard Andrew Norwell was carted off with an ankle injury and Mr. Perfect himself Josh Lambo missed a chip shot field goal that could gave given the Jags the lead. Leonard Fournette was ejected from the game and Jax would go on to lose 24-21.

With this Jaguar season going up in flames, and with this lost guarantee another non- winning season which makes 10 in the last 11 years, someone has to be the downfall. I guess the organization pointed the finger at Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett who is the 3rd OC to lose their job while directing an offense led by Blake Bortles, who has also been benched. Back up QB Kody Kessler will start this Sunday at home in Jacksonville when the (3-8) Jags take on the Indianapolis Colts.

Hawks End 10 Game Losing

StreakBy Timothy Parker

Finally! For the first time since November 3rd, the

Atlanta Hawks won a basketball game. They ended their 10 game losing streak, with a 124-123 victory over the Hornets at State Farm Arena on Sunday night.

“A lot of happiness on (the players) faces,” coach Lloyd Pierce said. “This is the feeling we want to have.”

Trae Young, shared the same sentiment, saying, the locker room’s “mood was energized,” after ending their near-month long skid.

But the win didn’t come easy. The Hawks had to stop one of the NBA’s leading scorers, Kemba Walker, in the game’s final seconds.

Walker drove in the lane with 4.6 seconds left to play, looking for the winning bucket, but instead was rejected by John Collins as time expired.

“We all knew 100 percent the ball was coming to Kemba on the inbound,” Collins said. “He ended up going for the floater and I timed it perfectly and got the game-winning block.”

The American Diabetes Association estimates that over 30 million

Americans are affected by diabetes and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. In the African American population, studies show that we are disproportionately affected by diabetes in comparison to the general population. The rates of diagnosed diabetes among African Americans is 12.7% compared to 7.4% of whites.

Not only does the African American community face the dilemma of increase diabetes diagnoses, but also face numerous of health care challenges when trying to manage diabetes; such as cost for treatments, medications, limited supplies and access to primary care to maintain a quality of life.

Eli Lilly and Company, a global leader in diabetes care, understands these gaps and burdens of costs in the African American community. They understand that there are gaps in health care for communities of color and working to help close it by reducing the cost of insulin and making sure that everyone will have equal access to their medicines.

For this reason, Eli Lilly has launched Lilly Diabetes Solution Center and Helpline in the African American community to ensure people receive comprehensive treatment for diabetes. To spread the word on this effort, Lilly will launch this announcement with full page ads in African American newspapers across the country.

Beginning next week, the National Newspapers Publishers Association representing Black newspapers will be running advertising in selected markets announcing the solutions center as an opportunity for African Americans to receive affordable diabetes medication. This is especially great news for African Americans who are disproportionately affected by diabetes and its effects. This collaboration with the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center will help decrease the complications of diabetes by making sure that access to affordable insulin is available to improve the quality of life in the African American community.

About The Lilly Diabetes Solution Center and Helpline

The Solution Center is a solution-oriented

program to provide relief for those who are not insured, underinsured or have high out-of-pocket expenses. It will assist people to gain access to affordable insulin, resources and options. Specifically, the center provides cost savings solutions, free clinic information to receive support and short-term and long-term options for immediate needs.

Lilly is dedicated to making sure that no one has to pay full price for insulin. And for those who currently pay high costs of insulin, Lilly is wants to provide lower costs insulin options. “We don’t want anyone to have to pay full list price for their insulin, and many people who do will be able to pay significantly less by calling our helpline,” said Mike Mason, senior vice president, Connected Care and Insulins. “Our goal is to ensure that people paying high out-of-pocket costs for Lilly insulins are matched with the best solution available to reduce their financial burden and help ensure they receive the treatment they need.”

Lilly has also donated insulin to three relief agencies that serves communities of color globally and particularly in the US -- Americares, Direct Relief and Dispensary of Hope. They have distributed insulin to 150 free clinics around the country. The helpline will direct people toward these clinics in their local communities and provide information on how they can obtain it.

Lilly wants to hear from those who have trouble paying or cannot afford their insulin by calling the helpline. If there is an immediate need, please call the helpline to learn the immediate and long-term best options of care.

“We encourage people who pay near full list price for insulin and those who don’t have the financial means to afford the costs they face to call the helpline,” Mason said. “We want to help people find ways to obtain insulin at more affordable prices.”

Help is available now by calling the Lilly Diabetes Solutions Center helpline at 833-808-1234 to get more information and immediate assistance. Representatives will be available from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm (ET) Monday through Friday.

By Oscar Blayton

Most readers will be familiar with this scenario. A white

politician that you have not heard from in two years starts to show up at Black churches, glad-handing the pastors, reciting for the congregation his or her accomplishments that you’ve never heard of and reminding you to vote for him or her in the upcoming elections.

It’s a scenario that is played out in most political districts where Blacks make up a significant portion – but not the majority – of the electorate. We know very little about these absentee politicians except that they are “the lesser of two evils” – the choice offered to those Black folk allowed to vote, since the end of the Reconstruction.

The question is: Why are we consistently faced with only being able to choose between the lesser of two evils each election cycle? Or put another way: “Why can we not have more options when selecting who will represent us?

The answer is that we do have more options. We simply must constantly stay politically “woke” and not wait until the last minute to pay attention to who the potential candidates are. Politicians interested in running in 2020 already are lining up at the starting gate. People aspiring to become the next president of the United States already have advance people in Iowa and other key states in preparation for the primary elections. Those eying congressional seats, state and local offices are organizing their political teams in order to hold on to those offices or to unseat an incumbent.

2016 has shown us that if we do not get engaged, we are in danger of being saddled with a lying racist, bent on erasing all of the gains people of color have made during the last five decades.

2018 has shown us that when people organize, they can overcome many of the obstacles that are strewn in our paths to equal justice and the freedoms promised to us by the U. S. Constitution. 2018 also has shown us that there are those who would deny people of color justice and freedom by blocking us from our guaranteed right to vote.

The Georgia governor’s race shone the light on how bigots and racists will go to any lengths to tilt the vote in their favor by removing voters from the rolls and by making it more difficult for voters to get to the polls to cast their ballots. Republican Brian Kemp ran for governor of that state while refusing to step down as its secretary of state, the office that oversees elections in Georgia. Over the years, Kemp systematically removed Black voters from the rolls through various questionable means, giving himself a clear advantage by increasing the percentage of would-be voters who were white.

There are those who will try to cheat us out of our rights, including our right to vote. There are those who will try to steal elections in the way that Trump did in 2016 with the help of Russian interference. These people can be stopped, however. They can be stopped by you and by me. They can be stopped by your parents and your voting-age children – and by your aunts and uncles and cousins and friends.

The way we stop them is by looking for people qualified to run for office in federal, state and local elections and helping them to win. These people can be found among your parents and your voting age children – and your aunts and uncles and cousins and friends. They must be identified and then encouraged to run for office. And when they run, we must support them. We must support them with our time, our labor and with

our money. There may not be many of us that can give much of any of these things, but we can each give something.

If we make more of an effort, we can get more elected officials of the type we want and deserve. The proof is in the pudding. 2018 saw a record number of women of color elected, and it is expected that these women will work to steer America back on the correct course to fulfilling the promises of our Constitution.

According to the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, women of color now will occupy:

38 seats in Congress9 statewide elective offices456 state legislative seats and10 mayors’ offices in some of the

nation’s 100 largest cities. We, as people of color, are in a pitched

battle for our rightful place in this nation. And it is a battle that we will not win if we do not enlist as many people as possible in the fight. If we do not identify, enlist and support candidates who champion our best interests, then we deserve the callous and unjust treatment that we receive from elected officials who do not respect us.

The clock is running and so are the same tired old politicians. It is time we bring some serious champions into the fight.
