On the morning of March 4, 2016, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office detectives and regional SWAT task force operators served a search warrant on a residential compound near Superior to search for a shooting suspect and the weapon used in a February 28 shooting of a 35-year-old male. Five adults were arrested, including the alleged shooter, 49-year-old, Joe Bribiescas. The weapon used in the assault was recovered on the property. Just after 4 a.m., on Feb. 28, PCSO received a call from the staff at Banner Gateway Hospital in Gilbert about a shooting victim at their emergency room. The victim was shot once in the abdomen and survived the wound. He reported the shooting happened at a residential property on Hewitt Station Road where he had been visiting a friend at a property on Hewitt Station Road near Superior and had been shot by a man he knew as Joe Bribiescas. Investigators determined the property where the shooting took place was

located at 33235 E. Hewitt Station Rd., Superior. Once it was determined that the suspect was on the property, investigators obtained a search warrant to search for the gun and the suspect. “This property is best described as a compound with many different structures and potential hazards for deputies serving the warrant,” said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. “The detectives and SWAT operators on the regional task force are well trained for these dangerous searches, and our planning and training served us well to keep everyone safe during this operation.” On the afternoon of March 4, a multi-agency search warrant operation was conducted at the Hewitt Station Road property. The regional SWAT team served a search warrant on the property at about 9:00 a.m., assisted by PCSO Detectives, members of the PCSO Narcotics Task Force, and U.S. Marshal’s Violent Offender Task Force. The suspect, Joe Bribiescas, was located

and arrested on the property. His brother, Raymond Bribiescas, was arrested on outstanding felony warrants as well. A female on the property during the warrant service, Christine Gomez, was arrested for two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, after two pipes commonly used for meth were found in her pocket when she was detained. An unrelated subject, Scott Gwin, was found on the property and arrested on a Maricopa County felony warrant for possession of dangerous drugs for sale and possession of narcotic drugs for sale. Another person on the property during the warrant service, Robert Howell, was arrested for misdemeanor warrants but was later released due to a medical issue. “During a search of the property,” Babeu said, “the weapon used to shoot the victim, a Ruger .22 cal. pistol, was recovered, along with numerous items of drug paraphernalia. A large bag of methamphetamine was also seized. Joe Bribiescas was booked for one count of

A press release issued by Representative Paul Gosar office on Monday announced that Chi’Chil Bildagoteel most commonly known as Oak Flats campground in the Tonto National Forest has been registered as a historic district by the Federal Keeper of the Record. In late 2015, the Keeper of the Record returned the original application to the Tonto National Forest due to several inaccuracies in their application. In early February 2016, the Tonto National Forest

re-submitted the application, this time indicating the place was an unnamed address near Superior, Arizona vs Kearney, Arizona as their original application stated. They also did not include the information that this area is most commonly known as Oak Flats to the public in the application. A request for a full copy of the nomination application has not been fulfilled at press time. According to early reports, the public had until Friday, March 4, 2016 to submit comments in favor or against the designation. Gosar’s press release indicates that on Friday, March 4, at

approximately 3:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time the Keeper of the Record submitted a letter to Rep. Gosar stating that the area would be designated even though Representative Paul Gosar and Representative Ann Kirkpatrick both requested that the comment period be extended to allow the public to make comments. Both Representatives have requested that the application be denied and asked for an extended comment period. The designation will create additional processes in the federal environmental permitting for the Resolution Copper mine

project. This designation does not reverse the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange which was passed in 2014. The land exchange was requested by Resolution Copper to develop their mine east of Superior. There is currently a bill in both the US House of Representatives and US Senate to reverse the Land Exchange called the Save Oak Flats bill. At press time it does not appear that the bill has received much traction in this Congress. The House bill was introduced by Rep. Raul Grijalva and the Senate bill was introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders.

Senior U.S. District Judge Stephen M. McNamee issued a decision last week to enforce an arbitrator’s award that ASARCO must pay a negotiated quarterly bonus based on the price of copper to the hundreds of employees hired after June 30, 2011. The company had denied the benefit and with this ruling the company will be forced to pay the bonuses. The award is estimated to be worth more than $10 million. The unions represent 2000 workers at five ASARCO locations in Arizona and Texas won the arbitration in December 2014. The Region 28, National Labor Relations Board issued a fourth consolidated complaint against the company for unfair labor practices. Those complaints include unlawfully implementing portions of it’s “last, best and final” contract proposal. At press time there were no comments from the company on the expected pay outs of the bonuses or other complaints made against ASARCO to the NLRB.

Superior’s 28th Annual Apache Leap Mining Festival is slated for March 11-13 and organizers are ready to celebrate all things ‘Miner’. On March 11, the Festival kicks off at 6 p.m. with a carnival and vendors and live music. Saturday, March 12, and Sunday, March 13, are packed all day with the opening parade beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Events include top notch entertainment throughout the event, hilarious Chihuahua races, panning for “copper”, roping competition, food and retail vendors, handmade crafts market, beer garden, Saturday night street dance with Bobby Cook and his band, lots of “hands on” things to do for all ages. The grueling mining competition with a $2,000 purse will headline the day! Watch a Mine Rescue demonstration, enjoy a tour of the Resolution Copper Mine property (reservations suggested), view an abandoned mine safety exhibit and other mine related activities. Walk the mine history trail. Mining and mine related companies will be here to talk to you about the process and types of copper mining and what that means to the area. Festival takes place on Main St., Superior. The event is family oriented and ALL FREE except carnival and vendors. Check the Chamber of Commerce website for schedules and updates. www.superiorarizonachamber.org or call 520-689-0200.

Superior has always been just a few steps away from Hollywood, many major movies have been filmed in

Superior along with many commercials. Most of residents are aware of the set designs of Billy Holmquist and his displays on Main St. however now Smokey’s Mercantile is home to Fishgate Productions along with art galleries and several retail boutiques. How did you find Superior: Deb Kay and her sister Rita had grown up in Apache Junction, eventually they moved to California to pursue their careers but three years ago Deb returned to Arizona and the two took a drive to Superior. Deb had been looking for a home for her studio and decided that Superior was going to be home to Fishgate Productions. She purchased the Smokey’s hardware store from the Chamber of Commerce and now her studio has a permanent home along with several art galleries, a few retail boutiques and the Ray Federal Credit Union is set to open this month. Artist Carla Keaton has her gallery in the mercantile along with the Global Encounters boutique which features unique jewelry and watch repair. The mercantile still has several spots open for

retail boutiques or small galleries for local artist. Many other artists are featured in the public spaces of the mercantile. Fishgate Productions is a joint endeavor by Deb Kay and her sister Rita Betty, together produce short films, documentaries, commercials and are now beginning their production of a feature film called Copper Town which is about a mining family. The sisters plan to shoot Copper Town in Superior. They have begun the funding process and will be looking for community support on the film endeavor. Advice to fellow business owners & budding entrepreneurs: Deb recommends following your passion and having a dream “There will always be obstacles, you just have to do it” she explained. The “In Your Biz” column is sponsored weekly by the Superior Chamber of Commerce in an effort to further promote their business members. To learn more about the Superior Chamber of Commerce you can visit their website www.superiorarizonachamber.org or call them at 520-689-0200. The Chamber meets the third Wednesday of every month at their building 165 Main St. in Superior, Arizona.

SUPERIOR POLICE REPORTContinued from page 3

By Andrew LuberdaSuperior Sun

The Superior baseball team won the consolation championship of the 35th Annual Joe S. Padilla tournament last weekend in San Tan Valley, defeating Round Valley, Globe and Coolidge in successive games last Saturday at Combs High School. The Panthers went 1 – 2 in pool play before Saturday’s bracket play, due in part to the late arrival of several team members as result of the basketball team’s deep run in the state tournament. “We didn’t play too bad (at the start) considering the basketball boys reached the semifinals,” Superior head coach told the Superior Sun. “We only had one day of practice with them so we were able to get a lot of reps in and a lot of (swings) in pool play. They shook off the rust really quick and played some pretty good baseball to win three-straight.” Freshman pitcher Steven Ybarra pitched a complete-game shutout in a 7 – 1 win against Coolidge in the championship game. The 5-foot-10 left hander allowed one earned run on four hits, struck out four, and walked one. Junior Edgar Galindo led the Panthers’ offensive attack, going 2-for-2 with a double

and three RBI. Senior Elias Olmos also had two hits, one of them a double. Lorenzo Garcia and Nicolaus Cruz each drove in a run. The six games played in four days at the Padilla tournament prepared the Panthers for the upcoming regular season. “I’m glad we got the extra reps in,” Olmos said. “It got us back in the groove of playing baseball again and we’re looking forward to getting the (regular) season started.” Olmos says Cruz, Ybarra and Galindo give the Panthers a strong starting rotation to go along with an experienced defense. That combination figures to make the Panthers a contender for a state title, something the multi-sport athlete hopes he can end his high school career with. “I’m looking forward to winning a state championship,” Olmos said. “It’s my last time playing with these guys so I’m hoping we can make a run at it and create some great memories.” Ortega believes his team can make the “run” Olmos is hoping for. “Now we’re ready to go,” Ortega said about the regular season. “We have to make that jump from being a good team to a great team and we have the players to do it.” Upcoming schedule: March 15 at Ray (4 p.m.) and March 16 at Miami (6 p.m.).
