HALVORSEN, J.: Sarabande con variazioni / Passacaglia /Concert Caprice / BRUNI, A.B.: 6 duos Concertants, Book 4 (Lomeiko, zhislin)

Natalia LomeikoYuri Zhislin

Johan Halvorsen was one of the leading figures in Norwegian music during his lifetime. His folk-inspired Concert Caprice on Norwegian Melodies evokes the natural world while his Passacaglia and Sarabande echo the sophisticated world of the Baroque. Virtuoso violinist Antonio Bruni thrived in Paris despite the French Revolution, and his Duos Concertants are underrated gems of the repertoire.

Greek Flute Music of the 20th and 21st Centuries

AngelicaCathariouChara IacovidouKatrin Zenz

This dazzling collection of flute music demonstrates the powerful individualism of contemporary Greek composers. It ranges widely, from the dirge that incorporates folk

material in Theodore Antoniou’s Lament for Michelle, to the use of ancient Greek modes in Giorgos Couroupos’s Elégie. Dimitri Terzakis employs micro-intervals to sonically fascinating effect in Zwei Märchen, whilst Yannis Ioannidis explores extremes of dynamics and registers in Fragmento II, a powerful example of the vitality and variety to be found in all these compositions.

Anima mea - Sacred Music of the Middle Ages

Ensemble Cosmedin

Anima mea explores the Christian concept of the soul through these masterpieces of medieval Sacred Music. Hildegard of Bingen’s beautifully exalted harmonies represent God’s order in the music of the spheres. The recently

rediscovered Erfurt Ritual contains sung music from Master Eckhart’s historical context. These antiphons are performed here for the first time since 1525, along with chants from the liturgy of the Roman mass, music from the Notre Dame School, and a glorious Magnificat.

HAYdN, J.: Flute Trios Nos. 15-17

Uwe GroddChristopher HinterhuberMartin Rummel

It is not known for sure why Haydn chose the flute over the more usual violin in these three trios. Possibly it was to appeal to English or aristocratic taste for the instrument. Whatever the reason,

there is no lessening of his profuse lyricism and contagious wit in these charming works. Both the D major and G major Trios end with virtuosic and witty pay-offs, whilst the F major is rather different; a more symphonically oriented work that fuses seriousness and fun in equal measure.

CHOPIN, F.: Piano Trio / Rondo in C major

Emily Beynon Simon Crawford-PhillipsPhilip MooreKungsbacka Piano Trio

Exploring the byways of Chopin’s work reveals gems such as the elegant Rondeau for two pianos, and the Variations for flute and piano on a theme by Rossini then at the height of his popularity.

PILATI, M.: Piano Quintet / LONGO, A.: Piano Quintet

Circolo Artistico EnsembleAldo Ciccolini (piano)Dario Candela (piano)

This release champions two relatively unknown Neapolitan composers. Mario Pilati’s style was described by musicologist Gianandrea Gavazzeni as “southern Baroque, full of songlike

whims and lively impulses”, and the rhythmically vital and deeply expressive Piano Quintet of 1927–28 is one of his most important early pieces.

dEBUSSY, C.: Orchestral Works, Vol. 7

Emmanuel CeyssonAlexandre Doisy Paul MeyerJean-Yves ThibaudetLyon National OrchestraJun Markl (conductor)

An important marker in Debussy’s compositional development, the Fantaisie reflects something of the influence of César Franck’s Symphonic Variations yet embodies his own new aesthetic. Unpublished in Debussy’s lifetime, it is heard here in its 1968 revision.

LANCINO, T.: RequiemRadio France ChoirRadio France Philharmonic OrchestraEliahu Inbal

Thierry Lancino’s vast Requiem is a challenging and eloquent contemplation on human mortality which the composer describes as ‘both an epic fresco and sacred ceremony’. In a paradox which brings the Christian into dialogue

with the Pagan, Lancino presents an exploration of Death and Time which is both human and relevant, as well as posing eternal and unanswerable questions. This recording captures a unique and moving event, performed by a stellar cast of artists and France’s leading choir and orchestra.

My First Classical Music Album

The ‘My First’ album series from Naxos is the ideal springboard for a lifelong journey through classical music. Each selection is carefully tailored for younger listeners and includes famous tracks as well as unexpected gems. The booklet is full of information on every piece of music. Unique and imaginative,

these CDs will open a door to a wonderful world that children and parents can discover together.

My First Mozart Album

If you listen carefully to this CD, you will get to know one of the best composers in the world. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived 250 years ago but he carries on being famous—so he must have been special. He giggled a lot. He was also good at playing the piano and the violin. And he wrote this amazing music, which people still love hearing today. See if you love hearing it too!

Nikolay Andreyevich RIMSkY-kORSAkOV (1844-1908)

Seattle SymphonyGerard Schwarz (conductor)

Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral genius shines through in his colourfuloperatic suites, and that from his final opera Le Coq d’or is richly dramatic and expressive. The complicated folk-based story of the

Snow Maiden is simplified into four enchanting movements, and that of Sadko into a single, radiantly descriptive tone-poem. The thrilling legend of Mlada is represented by vivid dances and a final Cortège. Gerard Schwarz’s recording of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade (8.572693) with the Seattle Symphony was described as ‘absolutely terrific’. (ClassicsToday.com)

HANSON, H.: Symphonies (Complete), Vol. 2 - Symphony No. 2 / Lux aeterna / Mosaics

Susan GulkisSeattle Symphony OrchestraGerard Schwarz (conductor)

Hanson’s intent in 1930 to write music that was “young in spirit, lyrical and romantic

in temperament”, was fully realised in his ardent Second Symphony. This, his best known symphonic statement, acknowledges a Sibelian inheritance through horn fanfares, powerfully lyric string writing, and a sense of unity both all-embracing and memorable.

My First Piano Album

Listen to the piano turn into a bumblebee, a donkey, trolls, a bird, a horse and a butterfly! Sometimes it isn’t anything except a piano, but the music coming out of it is exciting and beautiful. Can you spot Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star? Mozart makes it twinkle in all kinds of different ways. There are so many things to enjoy here, and all from one amazing musical instrument: the piano.

WALLACE, W.V.: Maritana

RTE Philharmonic ChoirRTE Concert OrchestraProinnsias O Duinn

Maritana was one of the most popular of mid-nineteenth-century British operas. Its 1848 première was a triumph and was soon followed by performances in opera houses from Vienna to Philadelphia.

The absurd plot, which contrasts life at the Spanish court with that of the Gypsy street-singer of the title, is subsidiary to the appeal of a string of infectious and much loved arias such as There is a flower that bloometh and Yes! Let me like a soldier fall. 8.660308-098.578207

HEIFETz, Jascha: Miniatures, Vol. 2 (1944-1948)

This second of two volumes (Vol. 1 is available on 8.111379) completes the repertoire recorded by Jascha Heifetz during his short wartime period with American Decca. Aware of the need for lighter music while touring for the US troops, Heifetz nonetheless refused to play down to his

audiences, praising the G.I.s’ ‘interest in good music’. This more classical programme represents the violinist’s staggering virtuosity and range, from a spectacular paraphrase of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville to the lyrical expressiveness of Saint-Saëns’s The Swan. The inclusion of four rare V-Disc recordings concludes a remarkable legacy of uniquely vibrant performances.

PRIMROSE, William: Recital, Vol. 1 (1939-47)

The great Scottish violist William Primrose revolutionised the playing of his instrument through both his virtuosity and the myriad colours he could evoke. Fully the equal of his colleagues Heifetz and Feuermann, he recorded a number of concertos and sonatas. But he also committed a substantial

number of shorter pieces to disc, from Chopin and Dvořák to Kreisler and Arthur Benjamin.

danças Brasileiras

São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Roberto Minczuk Dance and Brazilian music are often regarded as more or less synonymous, in the same way that the samba to many of us is Brazilian dance! But the many acclaimed recordings by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra of symphonic works, tone poems and operas by

Villa-Lobos, Camargo Guarnieri and other Brazilian composers, have demonstrated the variety of their national music, and in the same way this disc brings proof of the rich and many-faceted nature of Brazilian dance.

C.P.E. BACH –Solo keyboard Music, Vol. 23

Miklós Spányi (clavichord)

In his acclaimed series of C.P.E. Bach’s music for solo keyboard, Miklós Spányi has constructed a programme consisting of four sonatas from the 1750’s, including the closing Sonata in A major

(Wq65/32), described by Dr. Darrell M. Berg in her liner notes as one of Bach’s most graceful works for keyboard. The sonatas are interspersed with a number of shorter pieces: Solfeggios and Fantasias composed mainly to be used in the teaching of Bach’s own students, which included members of the nobility, as well as aspiring professional musicians such as his younger brother Johann Christian. BEETHOVEN PIANO CONCERTOS NOS. 1 & 2

Mario Galeani (piano)Royal Philharmonic OrchestraGrzegorz Nowak (conductor)

Mario Galeani and Grzegorz Nowak partner once more in a brand new recording of Beethoven’s piano concertos. This is a companion disc to RPOSP013 Piano Concertos Nos. 4 & 5 featuring the same artists. As with all of the RPO’s recent own-label CDs, this was recorded in the wonderful acoustics of London’s Cadogan Hall, the RPO’s London home.

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN: String Trios

Trio ZimmermannFrank Peter Zimmermann (violin) Antoine Tamestit (viola) Christian Poltéra (cello)

For their second release on BIS the Trio Zimmermann has chosen to record Beethoven’s String Trios Op.9 – a set of three that the composer

himself upon their completion described as ‘la meilleure de mes oeuvres’ – the finest of his works. He composed them in 1796-98, after two earlier contributions to the genre which both clearly followed in the footsteps of Mozart’s great Divertimento K563.

Martin FRöST – dances to a Black Pipe

Martin Fröst (clarinet) Australian Chamber Orchestra directed by Richard Tognetti

Martin Fröst isn’t just one of the major clarinettists of our time – he is also an intrepid adventurer who challenges conventional notions of how classical music should be

presented. He has played Bach-Gounod’s Ave Maria while doing figures-of-eight on roller-skates, performed the part of dancing soloist (wearing a bird’s mask) in Anders Hillborg’s clarinet concerto Peacock Tales, and is constantly giving new proof of his curiosity when it comes to repertoire that defies genres.

BIS-SACD-1863

Snowflakes –A Classical Christmas

Øystein Baadsvik (tuba) Cantus women’s choir; Trondheim Symphony Orchestra / Torodd Wigum

On five previous discs the astonishing tuba player Øystein Baadsvik has demonstrated his incredible versatility as a musician,

while at the same time establishing that ‘anything a violin can do, a tuba can do too’, to quote a review in the Daily Telegraph of his first disc on BIS, Tuba Carnival. As Baadsvik writes in his own liner notes to the present disc: ‘Every tuba player soon learns to live with people’s “oompah-oompah” prejudices, but rarely have these been challenged more boldly than here.

Broken Branches – compositions by Stephen Hough

Michael Hasel (piccolo); Marion Reinhard (contrabassoon and bassoon); Stephen Hough (piano); Jacques Imbrailo (baritone); Steven Isserlis (cello); Tapiola Sinfonietta Gábor Takács-Nagy

As the internationally-renowned pianist Stephen Hough writes in his liner notes to this composer portrait, he began composing at the age of six, around the time he began to play the piano. Until the age of twenty he continued to write music, but then, ‘owing to a combination of diminishing time and fading compositional self-confidence’, stopped almost entirely.

Richard WAGNER: Götterdämmerung

With the fourth part of the “Ring des Nibelungen”, the curtain descended on the central work of Richard Wagner.

After “Siegfried” this spring, OehmsClassics is now presenting “Götterdämmerung” from

Hamburg in an excellent cast. Simone Young created a sensation with the Hamburg Philharmonic at the premiere; Claus Guth’s directing concept was variably received by public and press.

The features of the 4-CD box are of high quality, as with the previous productions from Hamburg: alongside an extensive preface by Udo Bermbach, the booklet also includes the libretto in German and English.

One of the most famous piano concertos is now released in a complete new production: World famous pianist Tzimon Barto worked together with no less a person than his pianist colleague and conductor Christoph Eschenbach. Both of them show us a very new and exciting version of the score which we never listend before. After the final concert of this production at the Berliner Philharmonie the audience and the press reviews has been very enthusiastic.

The two may have done little more than talk about the weather before they began playing the largely standards-focused Impressions, but from such mundane chitchat comes a performance that exemplifies the best of what each of these fine musicians does - but

also, with the push-and-pull of two different musical personalities, demonstrates the ability and willingness of each to be drawn outside their normal predispositions, to create music that’s the best of both, and something a little more, and a lot special. – John Kelman

The transparency of the quartet’s intent and mode of operation allow hearing inside the music, from which details of descent and association emerge. In response, memory, and imagination, memory’s

mirror, suggest familiar analogies – such as the guitar’s Appalachian folk arpeggios in “Pendulum Music”, the tenor saxophone’s vocalization and the raga-like development of “Descent”, the bluesy edge of “Esther”, the multiple meters in “Rat Man”.

Produced by Mathias Rüegg

Mathias Rüegg directed the Vienna Art Orchestra from the late 1970s until its closure in 2010 and is therefore a major figure in the Austrian Jazz scene. The Swiss musician left an Austrian mark on the European music world by combining the harmonic world of Jazz with the most eminent works of the entire history of music.

“Jazz” is usually associated with improvisation, which creates new content in every performance through the spontaneous dialogue of the musicians on stage. The Vienna Art Orchestra was famous for that, but also increasingly admired for mathias rüegg’s road from improvisation to notated music.

Nikolay Andreyevich RIMSkY-kORSAkOV (1844-1908)The Legend of the Invisible City of kitezh

Mikhail Kazakov, Vitaly Panfilov, Tatiana MonogarovaMikhail Gubsky, Albert Schagidullin, Alexander NaumenkoOrchestra e Coro del Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Alexander VedernikovEimuntas Nekrošius (director)

The Invisible City of Kitezh, completed in 1905, is a remarkable opera that fuses folklore, mysticism and realism. Its subject is the story of the advancing Mongol army’s entry to Great Kitezh and the city’s subsequent miraculous survival. Rejecting archaisms and the more religiously inclined suggestions of his librettist, Rimsky-Korsakov sought to create an opera that “is contemporary and even fairly advanced”. It is therefore throughcomposed, hinting at times at Wagnerian procedure, and flooded with the composer’s rich, apt and brilliant orchestral palette, fully supportive of the powerful vocal writing.

Described as “the great Verdian bass” (Le Figaro) and a “Mefistofele who stood out over all the others” (Der Neue Merker), Carlo Colombara brings some of the most famous bass rôles to life in this wide-ranging programme. Emotions range from the pride of Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen, through the terrors of Verdi’s Attila, to the tender recollections of Rachmaninov’s Aleko. Mephistopheles strides powerfully through both Gounod and Boito’s operas, and Rossini’s comic wit contrasts with the darkness of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. 2.110612 (DVD)

MAHLER: Symphony No.2

Diana Damrau, soprano; Petra Lang, mezzo-soprano Chor der Deutschen Staatsoper Berlin; Staatskapelle Berlin Pierre Boulez

Born in 1925 in Montbrison, France, Pierre Boulez is one of the most distinguished composers and conductors in the world today.

With his uncompromising approach to the score, Pierre Boulez’s Mahler readings have long fascinated critics and audiences alike. Boulez eschews the romanticized readings common in performance tradition and instead reveals the real joy and terror in Mahler’s large-scale symphonies.

Vocalists Diana Damrau and Petra Lang join forces with the Staaatskapelle Berlin and the Staatsopernchor as the perfect ensemble to bring Boulez’s vision of this gargantuan piece to life.

Boulez’s interpretation is truly infused with light. This performance really does give a new perspective on a much-loved symphony.

Raphael Haeger, Simon Rössler, Franz Schindlbeck, Jan Schlichte, Wieland Welzel (percussionists) Berliner Philharmoniker Yutaka Sado

The Program will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in November. This debut concert performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker by the Japanese conductor Yutaka Sado was hailed in the press as a triumph. The musicians decided to raise funds for the relief efforts following the cataclysmic earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011. The programme consists of From me flows what you call time, a perfect blend of East and West, by Japan’s most enduring composer Toru Takemitsu, and Dmitry Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, which so successfully blends the demands of the Soviet authorities with the oppressed public’s need for an emotional outlet. Live recording from the Philharmonie, Berlin, 20 May 2011. Directed by Michael Beyer. This DVD production is a Charity Concert for the victims of the Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster from March 11th 2011. The profit generated will be donated to a special section of the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS), which

was especially founded for earthquake victims: ‘Japan: Earthquake and Tsunami’, and will therefore be distributed directly among the population affected. Immediate help for the Japanese people in need is thus guaranteed.
