Here are some highlights

In 2011 energy savings from continued improvement in the energy efficiency of 11 IEA member countries equalled 1 337 million tonnes of oil-equivalent (Mtoe). This level exceeded the total final consumption (TFC) from any single fuel source in these countries, and was larger than the total 2011 TFC for the European Union from all energy sources combined. Energy efficiency savings in 11 IEA member countries were effectively displacing a continent’s energy demand.

Energy efficiency finance is expanding and innovating, with new funding approaches and business models; there is a notable expansion in funding for development aid projects, as well as in the use of funding vehicles such as energy service companies (ESCOs) and on-bill financing mechanisms.

Vehicle fuel economy standards now cover 70% of the global passenger light-duty vehicle (LDV) market and will drive the market for more energy-efficient vehicles in the next five years. New standards are estimated to lead to energy efficiency investments of USD 80 billion annually out to 2020 and will save between USD 40 billion and USD 190 billion in fuel costs.

The market potential for energy efficiency is growing significantly in OECD non-member economies. This is pronounced in the transport sector, where passenger travel is estimated to increase by 90% by 2020 from 2011 levels.

The Energy Efficiency Market Report 2014 (EEMR 2014) estimates that investment in energy efficiency markets worldwide in 2012 was between USD 310 billion and USD 360 billion.

Investment in energy efficiency was larger than supply-side investment in renewable electricity or in coal, oil and gas electricity generation, and around half the size of upstream oil and gas investment. Investment in energy efficiency is distributed unevenly across countries and energy-consuming sectors (buildings, domestic appliances, transport and industry).

The annual report, now in its second year, shows that investments in energy efficiency are helping to improve energy productivity – the amount of energy needed to produce a unit of GDP. Among 18 IEA countries evaluated in the report, total final energy consumption was down 5% between 2001 and 2011 primarily as a result of investments in energy efficiency.

What’s on my power bill?DEC MEMBER

October 17, 2014 – The beauty of having a

deregulated electricity market here in Alberta is

that consumers have access to countless energy

providers and a wide array of competitively

priced electricity plans to choose from. Plus, if you

own a micro-generation system, it’s so easy and

seamless to connect to the grid. However, before

deciding on an electricity provider and a micro-

generation system, you should probably first

understand how your electricity bill is calculated.

It is important to note that the only portion of

your bill which changes when you switch between

electricity retailers is the energy charge which

is dependent on your electricity rate and the

administration fee which is set by each retailer. As

a micro-generator, you will automatically receive

a micro-generation credit on your monthly bill for

excess energy supplied to the grid, regardless of

which retailer you have signed on with.

On Saturday October 4, 2014 more than 120 families, farmers, cooperatives, institutions and businesses opened their doors to more than 3,300 attendees in Ontario and Alberta.

Green Energy Doors Open is an annual, single-day, province-wide showcase providing access to sustainable and decentralised energy projects, businesses, manufacturing sites, education programs and other related initiatives.

Alberta’s Green Energy Doors Open SuccessWe were able to reach and exceed the 2014 GEDO’s goals in Alberta with:

• 15 hosts

• 10 sponsors and organisational

partners

• 9 communities

• 300 attendees

We would like to thank our hosts, sponsors and partners for supporting this initiative, enabling us to organise it in the first place and spreading the word. This support was vital to making this first Alberta's Green Energy Doors Open a huge success with close to 300 attendees in 9 communities across the province.

GEDO 2014 encouraged users, producers and advocates of sustainable and decentralised energy to open their doors in order to raise awareness, understanding and support for sustainable energy by providing people with the opportunity to visit, see, touch and talk about the projects in their backyard.

DEC worked closely with OSEA to bring the success of Ontario’s Green Energy Doors Open (GEDO) to Alberta

Media Coverage at GEDO

CTV Two Alberta

A special thanks to CTV Two Alberta for providing substantial support by broadcasting a Public Service Announcement (PSA). The PSA video was on air from August 23rd until October 4th. If you missed it, click here to watch it.

As part of the CTV Two support for GEDO, they allowed us to choose two DEC members for a Sustainability Connector video campaign. The campaign included professional produced videos to showcase sustainability projects on CTV television.

We thoroughly appreciated the op-portunity to showcase our local renew-able projects in Green Energy Doors Open. Our solar energy project hosts were able to share their success with the community, which generated ex-citement about renewables and the role that solar energy can play in Canmore. Green Energy Doors Open provided the perfect opportunity see real projects.

Lori Rissling Wynn, Town of Canmore

We had 51 guests including one from Newcap TV and two from local newspapers. The President of Lake-land College also attended GEDO. A number of people travelled from Ed-monton after seeing the CTV com-mercial. The open house at CSI was a great success.

Veronica Peterson, Lakeland College Alberta’s first GEDO was a great suc-cess, and Eden Project was pleased to have taken part. We welcomed more than 15 guests to tour the garden and made some valuable connections with the local community. It was a great op-portunity to share what Eden Project is about and to network with potential colleagues and customers who are in-terested in the same goals for a greener planet and more sustainable lifestyles.
