Friendships Through Education Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home has a tri-partite mission to serve our veterans, assist in research efforts, and to educate future health professionals. Our residents assist in this effort by participating in interviews with medical, dental, nursing and OT students, and now a student of psychology has chosen to fulfill a class requirement by visiting with a Georgia War resident. Heather Nichols, Activities Director, paired Macy with Dr. Robert Crumrine. Macy Ellis is spending time during the fall semester getting to know Dr. Crumrine. Studies in her “Psychology - Adult Development of Aging” class at Augusta University are expanding her knowledge of aging, and Dr. Crumrine is deepening her personal understanding of growing in age and wisdom. “I like to help people with their education. I have worked with OT students and medical students my entire career,” states Dr. Crumrine. We thank our veterans who enjoy spending valuable time as honorary “professors” with Augusta University’s “health Professionals of tomorrow.” Their time and effort is an Important piece in these students’ development and understanding.

It’s the end of the year already! Wow! Time flies when you’re having fun with the residents and staff here at Georgia War Veterans Nursing home. My prayer is that all who come through these doors will be inspired and find hope. Speaking of inspiration and hope, I was talking with a good friend and colleague, the Associate Director of Pastoral Care at Augusta University, Brennan Francois. He is M A D (Making a Difference) everyday! I asked him about Christmas, and this is what he shared with me and will hopefully inspire you. "What is Christmas? To me, Christmas is about hope. The world was dark, broken, and in need of hope. It was then, and just at the right time that God gave us Christmas in the form of a baby, born to Mary, in a stable, in Bethlehem. The Christ-child became a priceless gift to everyone. Hope was found in this baby. His light expelled darkness. Despair was overtaken by joy. The world had something to look forward to, something to live for and, if necessary, something to die for.” Can hope be found in GWVNH? Is there light and joy in this place? Undoubtedly, we see some of the bravest, most courageous, strong, and brilliant people ever born to this world become weak, disorientated, and dependent. We experience the grief and pain of their loved ones as they witness changes that are unwelcome and hard to bear. We, the staff, are overwhelmed by what our senses take in as we care for the residents of the Blue Goose. However, every time we cross the threshold of this place, it's an opportunity to extend hope to patients, their families, and to each other. Our kind, caring, compassionate service is a daily gift and our privilege. Our smiles and laughter are to gifts of joy. Our residents look forward to seeing us and receiving the gift of hope we bring. They look forward to our conversations. They anticipate our tender touch, our thoughtful acts, and our kind spirit. Hope is born daily and lives boldly right here at GWVNH. We are with them. We give them something to look forward to. In their life and for some at the time of their death, we are extensions of the Christ child. We are dispensers of hope. To me, that is Christmas! Merry Christmas from Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home & your Chaplain. - Chaplain Timothy Lark

Love Leaves A Memory Those we love don’t go away,
They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
For death leaves a heartache No one can heal,
And love leaves a memory No one can steal
