From the Field All we hear on the news is about the ongoing drought in California. However when we met for our fall board meeting in Fresno it did nothing but rain all day. In spite of the weather we had a great meeting with a real positive outlook for HAUSA going forward. In 2014 the Board approved to use up to 5% annually of our reserve fund to fund approved projects. The office in Brattleboro is in need of an IT update and we approved a $2.9 million payable over 4 years to get this project done. This is a major undertaking but will provide much needed improvements in efficiences for both our employees and customers. This will also help our worldwide business as having compatible programs will help with future cross country pedigrees and classification information. We also replaced the roof on the office building and other small but need projects at the office. A reminder to all is we also have the list posted of prefixes that are up for reuse this year.. Any prefix that has been unused for 20 years is eligible to be used again by another breeder. Obviously it’s winter but it won’t be long and the spring sale season is right around the corner. Our area will be blessed with two opportunities this spring to market cattle. The Oklahoma State Sale will be in early April and The Kansas State Sale will be held the end of May this year in Salina. Thanks again for all your support and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!...and... LET’S GO ROYALS!!!!!Roy

Holstein Association USA is again having a good year in registra-tions: we are nearly 5,000 above last year’s totals at this time and on track to set a record. If you are thinking of getting caught up on registrations, let one of us know and we’ll be glad to help you. If you have a neighbor who has been using A.I., has been on DHI test, or has a good herd management program, let them know: the Start-Up program is open to all dairies that want to get official registration papers. By investing in a national member-ship, a calf less than 3 months of age can be registered for just a few dollars. It could open up your herd to many opportunities for sales and or bull contracts as well as the chance to take part in your state and national associations and to make lifelong friends.New TSU Pricing Holstein Association USA is offering new, lower pricing for Tis-sue Sample Units (TSUs), and for our new, official Holstein ear tag + TSU combos. TSU tubes, used for collecting and submitting DNA samples for genomic testing, are becoming more popular as the most efficient and reliable method for submitting genetic material. You can buy TSUs in boxes of 10 tubes for $25 per box, or boxes of 100 tubes for $240 per box. Customers purchasing at least 30 TSUs for their first order will receive a free TSU applicator (limit one applicator per customer, first order only), or the applicator may be purchased for $50. (You should purchase no more than a year’s worth of TSUs at a time). Customers testing most of the females born on their farm may be interested in our new tag + TSU combos, which provide a TSU in a nested pair with the producer’s choice of several official Hol-stein ear tags. Producers using TSUs and Enlight™ to identify their calves and order genomic testing materials can streamline their sample submission process and skip the genomic test paperwork by pro-viding TSU numbers at the time of ID and test ordering. Contact Holstein’s EASY Support Line (ext. 4205) for more information on that convenient option. And More… Holstein USA releases 2,200 prefixes, unused for more than 20 years, on December 31. The prefixes will then be available for members’ use. You can find out more by clicking on the button on our homepage. Also, for Junior Holstein members, our photo contest ends on January 5. Send in your photo that best illustrates the values of our industry and compete to win a Kindle Fire. You can find out more about it at: www.holsteinusa.com/juniors/index.jsp Meanwhile, for more information on any of our products and services, or for on-farm service, contact Holstein Association USA or one of your regional sales representatives. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator Val Dolcini announced that producers who chose coverage from the safety net programs established by the 2014 Farm Bill, known as the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) or the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs, can begin visiting FSA county offices starting Dec. 7, 2015, to sign contracts to enroll in coverage for 2016. The enrollment period will continue until Aug. 1, 2016. Producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office to schedule an appointment to enroll. If a farm is not enrolled during the 2016 enrollment period, producers on that farm will not be eligible for financial assistance from the ARC or PLC programs should crop prices or farm revenues fall below the historical price or revenue benchmarks established by the program.

Dallas Eugene Burton, 65, of Berryton, passed away Friday, Sept. 18, 2015. He died as a result of a single-car accident near his home. Dallas was born Aug. 22, 1950, at the Stubenhofer Home in Strong City, to John E. and Eldora Mae (Sherfffius) Burton. He grew up on a dairy farm in rural Cottonwood Falls and graduated from Chase County High School in 1968. He graduated from Emporia State University in Emporia in 1972, with a degree in biology and physics. He married Jill Staton on Feb. 14, 1970. They had two children, Shawn and Kevin. After graduation, he worked as the secretary of the Kansas Holstein Association and also as the editor of the Kansas Holstein Quarterly magazine. He eventually started his own business selling dairy cattle, which led to a sale he conducted with another dairyman, Ed Fellers. The one-time partnership led to a 30-year business relationship as Burton-Fellers Sales, LLC. The company specialized in one-of-a-kind sales that were innovative to the dairy industry and revolutionized genetics and breeding. One of their early ventures, the Holiday E. T. Extravaganza, was held annually for more than two decades and was one of the industry’s premier events. Burton-Fellers Sales also managed the annual National Convention Sale for many years, as well as other prominent dairy events. Dallas later started his own sales company, Burton Consulting, LLC. He continued to manage dairy sales until his passing. He recently managed the National Holstein Convention Sale in June 2015. He started a successful dairy website, www.DairyAgendaToday.com. The site features industry news and commentary and has live-streaming sales online. Dallas was admired and well respected in the dairy industry. He took pride in everything he accomplished, from handpicking cattle for his sales to personally designing almost every sale catalog he produced. He also worked to preserve the history of the industry, including many

important documents and photos. His reach crossed generations, and he will be long remembered for his vast contributions and love of dairy cattle. He married the love of his life, Linda Parsons, on Sept. 19, 1992. At the Kirby House in Abilene. The couple lived in Abilene before moving to Berryton in 1996. As a couple, they enjoyed hosting parties and family get-togethers, traveling and spending time with dear friends. A practical joker, Dallas always loved sharing a laugh with friends and family. He was an understanding, thoughtful, patient man who knew life was a “do-it-yourself job.” He was a skilled woodworker and loved crafting unique items for his six grandchildren. He will be forever remembered by those he touched. Dallas is survived by his wife, Linda, of Berryton; two sons — Shawn Burton (Debra), of Basehor, and Kevin Burton (Allenyn) of Phoenix, Ariz.; two step-sons — Shawn Forsberg (Michelle), of Rose Hill, and Shae Forsberg, of Salina; a sister, Velva Burton Carter (John) of LeCompte, La.; two brothers — Vaden L. Burton (Sharon) of Sloan, Iowa, and Delwin K. Burton (Sharon Lea) of Emporia; a sister-in-law, Deanna K. Burton, of Emporia; six grandchildren — Garrett and Hunter Forsberg of Rose Hill, Kyleigh Forsberg, of Salina, Andrew and Maya Burton, of Overland Park, and Maris Burton, of Phoeniz, Ariz.; nine nieces and nephews — Lori Vanderlick (Thomas), Jim Carter (Pixie), Kristi Butler (Ricky), Sarah Harvey (Andrew), Kyle Burton (Michelle), Matt Burton (Markie), Renae Fletcher (Jeff), Adam Hagemann (Stacey) and Jared Hagemann (Abby); and 20 great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John E. and Mae Burton, and a brother, Dennis D. Burton. A celebration of life service was held Sept. 26, at the Flint Hills Community Church in Cottonwood Falls. Memorial contributions to the Dallas Burton Memorial Scholarship may be sent c/o Marty Matlock, 9997 Allisonville Rd., Suite A, Fishers, IN 46038.

The Mid-States region and the country lost an ardent Holstein cheerleader with the death of Dallas Burton. A long time leader in the dairy sales industry, Burton devoted his life to the dairy industry and breeders throughout the country.

We have fond memories of Dallas over the years. He is an individual that really helped prod us along in our beginning’s in the registered Holstein industry. He always tried his best to treat us well, and we made good friends of each other, especially the week of our sale in September of 2011! He spent about a week up by us, and we enjoyed getting to know him and his fellow coworkers. It was kind of like, you treat me well, I will treat you well, with Dallas. Always saw the best in him, and our hopes he did the same with us! We miss him!Dwight and Anita Rokey, Kansas

In 1984 most folks thought the committee was nuts for selecting Burton-Fellers as the sale manager, since they had never done a national sale before. Dallas was very nice to work with, gave us good suggestions about different things and we ended up with a record breaking sale, and that record stood for several years. I have always been proud to call Dallas a good friend. I know the success of that sale led to him being ask to work for our 2012 sale in Springfield.Ed Steele, Missouri

Dallas was an early mentor to me in the sales business. He taught me to always tell everything you know both good and bad about a consignment to a potential buyer. Repeat business is built on trust and honesty and that is how you get ahead in life he would tell me. I loved his practical joking, even when I thought it wasn’t as funny as he did! I loved watching him laugh at his own jokes! But what a big heart! You would see Dallas from 50’ away and when he saw you, that big smile of his would just start to grin and by the time he reached you, he was handshaking, smiling even bigger and he just made you feel good inside! He always wanted everyone else to be happy. I know of no other warmer, kind soul who impacted me in such a positive manner. So many of us lost a good friend, I cherish all my memories of him and he think of him often.Scott Culbertson, Minnesota

I met Dallas Burton in the early 1980’s showing cattle at the Kansas State Fair and a friendship was started. Dallas and Ed Fellers had started their own dairy sales business about that time and I had worked many dairy sales and dispersals

Memories of Dallas Burton

as a ringman with Gary Estes who was starting in the auction business. Gary later became their main auctioneer. Dallas asked me to pick cattle in Texas and Oklahoma for their state sale. This led to me working in many dairy dispersals in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Nebraska. The sales crew who was made up of Gary Estes, John Grubaugh (the tent man!) and me. Ed did all the inside work with registration papers and any updates that needed made. Gary, John and I worked outside with Dallas. This is where Dallas like to be. I can’t not tell of all the pranks we played on one another. It was a lot of fun, but a lot of work also. I can still hear Dallas telling a joke and laughing at his own joke. It you know Dallas that laugh was something I will always remember him for. He always tried to make you feel like you were the best and always made you feel good about yourself. Thanks to Dallas I still pick cattle for the Oklahoma sale today. We will all miss this Holstein enthusiast. Every time I turn on dairyagenda I will think of Dallas. Dallas also loved coming to the Southern National and often bragged to others how well it was run. He often commented that the type of cattle in the Oklahoma State Sale was the type he really liked to sell.Bob Griggs, Oklahoma

In 1975 I was 14 years old and wrote a letter to the Secretary of the Kansas Holstein Association and ask for his help in finding my first Registered Holstein heifer to purchase. I had no idea that first meeting with Dallas Burton, Secretary of the Kansas Holstein Association would turn into a 40 year friendship with Dallas presenting me with so many opportunities in the Registered Holstein business I couldn’t keep count. From the purchase of that first heifer, all the cattle I sold in Burton-Fellers sales, numerous

bull syndicates, to Manager of Dairy Agenda Today. Dallas opened so many doors, introduced me to so many people in the industry and taught me so many things. But the most important thing Dallas gave me was his friendship.David Jons, Kansas

I worked a few sales with Dallas. He was always very pleasant to work with. Dallas was one of the more creative people in the sales industry. He would come up with new ideas and new ways to market cattle.Kenneth Hall, Arkansas

I met Dallas through Jack Kay. Jack was managing sales in Texas and I was calling his sales and Dallas was reading pedigrees. In 1980, Dallas and Ed Fellers started working sales and I worked with them. Dallas was a sincere friend. He was a giver and wanted to please people, along with being a very good writer. But what I will always remember are his practical jokes. We were working the Brookview Dispersal in Ohio. I had gone back to the room and was watching some football. I noticed some popcorn scattered around the room and thought that the hotel hadn’t done a good job cleaning. Suddenly I saw some albino mice looking for the popcorn. I went down to the front desk and complained, meanwhile Dallas and Ed got the mice out of the room. When I got back we couldn’t find the mice anywhere in the room. Dallas had planned the entire thing and even had the hotel staff working with him.Gary Estes, Missouri

He was a man who went by one name, “Dallas.” Everyone knew when you said Dallas, you were referring to Dallas Burton. He was an icon in the purebred dairy business and was known for this ‘outside of the box’ ideas that made Burton-Fellers cattle sales unique and

successful. His creativity and willingness to take a risk is what drove Dairy Agenda Today to go online in March of 2009 and be the successful online dairy magazine that it is today. But more than his success in promoting purebred Holsteins, Dallas cared. He cared about the man who went to the barn twice a day to milk his cows 365 days a year. He cared about the family who would be impacted by low milk prices. He was concerned about making sure the men who trusted him to sell their cattle, received the best price and that the buyer was also going to be successful with his new purchase. Dallas also cared very deeply about his family. While I only met a few family members, I knew about the character and accomplishments of all of them. The tenacity of his parents to carve out a life in the Flint Hills of Kansas, the kindness of his brothers, the achievements of his children and grandchildren and the unfailing love of his wife. At Dairy Agenda Today we miss Dallas. We miss his creativity, his crazy sense of humor, his love for Kansas basketball and his desire to drive the website to be better and more successful tomorrow than it was yesterday. While it was a wonderful opportunity to work side by side with Dallas, even more it was a privilege to call him a friend. He is loved. He is remembered. He is missed. Melissa Hart, Michigan

Jean WoodisBetty “Jean” Woodis, age 89, of Arvada, Colorado, passed away October 2, 2015 at home on the family farm. Jean was born Betty

Jean Spencer on March 24, 1926, in Denver, Colorado, daughter of Ernest and Jean (Wallace) Spencer. She grew up in Denver, Hereford, and Lakewood Colorado. During her senior year at Lakewood High School, her father passed away. So upon graduation, Jean went to work and helped her mother support her younger brother, Wally and sister, Rita. In 1944, she married Rudy Zehnder. During the World War II years, Jean became a federal service employee. She worked at the Lowry Air Force base (CO) in cost accounting and by the end of the war; she was head of the office. After the war, Jean and Rudy moved to the farm west of Standley Lake. They had seven children; Diane, Rudy, Ernie, Carol, Brain, Barbara, and Stephen.

As the children became 4-H members, they primarily had dairy projects, so naturally Jean became a 4-H leader for the next 15 years. Through the years, the girl that was city-born had adapted to the country and became dairy oriented. In 1967, she and the children assumed full responsibility of the herd of 43 head. In seven years the herd was built to 96 head of registered Holsteins with several excellents that bore her prefix, JEANZ. In 1973, she married John Woodis a former dairy farmer and employee of MEDA. In 1974, the JEANZ herd was dispersed. She served as Colorado Holstein Assn. Secretary/Treasurer for 17 years, during which time she was instrumental in establishing the Colorado Holstein Scholarship. Served as a director for 10 years on the Mountain Empire Dairyman’s Assn. Board. She became the first woman to be appointed to represent semen sales, when she became an exclusive distributor for Tri-State Breeders in Colorado. At this time she started her own business, Depend-A-Bull Semen Service. She also was on the AAA Mating Program as one of the maters under the direction of Bill Weeks. Other accomplishments include: serving on the Northwest Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, Member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Society, Board of Director on the North Plains Planning Community. Jean is survived by husband, John of Arvada, CO; three daughters: Diane Ossenkop of Lincoln, NE, Carol (Stan) McGarvey of Bellvue, CO, and Barbara Kirkmeyer of Brighton, CO; four sons: Rudy (Carol) Zehnder of Lakewood, CO, Ernie Zehnder of Arvada, CO, Brian (Terri) Zehnder of Arvada, CO, and Stephen (LuAnn) Zehnder of Greeley, CO; two step-daughters: Nancy Worster of Long Beach, CA and Sharon Woodis of Byers, CO; two step-sons: Larry (Irma) Woodis of Ft. Myers, FL and Bobby (Jane) Woodis of Sidney, NE; 26 Grandchildren, 27 Great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother, her former husband, and Uncle Al. Funeral services were October 15, 2015 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 12735 W. 58th Ave, Arvada, Colorado, 87002 In lieu of flowers; donations can be made to the Colorado Holstein Scholarship Fund for a memorial to benefit Holstein Youth are in care of: Gertie Chapin, 10868 Highway 144, Weldona, Colorado, 80653.

Willis H. ArmbrustWillis Armbrust, age 88 of Omaha, NE passed away Nov. 12, 2015,after a brief battle with lung cancer. Born Nov. 13, 1926

on a farm near that is now part of Omaha, Willis graduated from Central High School. He met Dolores Nielsen, a Chicago native who had grown up near Irvington at a local dance, said their daughter, Amy Armbrust of Omaha. They were married for 65-years. The Armbrusts built a nationally recognized herd of Holstein cattle. Willis was named Nebraska’s “outstanding young farmer” in a 1955 Junior Chamber of Commerce contest. In 1960 the couple sold the herd and launched Willis Armbrust Sales Service, a dairy auction company that conducted sales across the Midwest. By the mid-1970’s the Armbrust began developing their farmland with Armbrust Acres. Part of the land continued to be farmed until 1983. Ten years ago, the Armbrusts donated land along with $1 million to help build the YMCA that bears their name. They were also active in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Millard. Willis was preceded in death by wife, Dolores Armbrust. He is survived by daughter, Amy Armbrust of Omaha; son, Scott Armbrust (Nancy) of Green Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren: Matthew Armbrust, Kurt Armbrust, Adrian Dykstra, and Jacob Dykstra; brother, Dwayne Armbrust (Nancy) of Elkhorn; sister-in-law, Lorraine Barton; brother-in-law, Marty Nielsen (Diana); nieces and nephews. MO Judging Team Seeks SupportThe Missouri 4-H Dairy Judging team is seeking sponsors to assist in covering travel and other training expenses throughout the year. Individual families as well as companies are invited to sponsor and all levels of support are welcome. The team is currently in training, and additional travel is needed to develop a nationally competitive team. Due to change of goals in a current corporate sponsor, the team will need to replace a significant portion of their annual support, and are also seeking to develop an endowment fund that will provide long term funding. All donations are tax deductible and made to the Missouri 4-H Foundation. In a recent Missouri study, 98% of the participants said that being on a dairy judging team was ‘very important’ both educationally and professionally.
