Events Round-UpAdopt-A-Husky

DuPage County Fair – 29th and 30th July 2011

Ruby and Baru had a blast at the DuPage County Fair onSaturday, and boy, did they attract a crowd!!! There wasno 'down time' for them or the volunteers at all. A successful day all around.

Cantigny Dog Days – 6th August 2011

Despite the horrible humidity AAH had a fun and rewardingday. Sales were good and lots of information was presentedand given out to the throngs who were in attendance. Therawas one of our star canines on the day.

Time For Paws – 5th November 2011

What a great success Time for Paws was at Bark 'N' Town! The sole purpose of this event was to invite pre-approvedhomes and previous adopters to come meet our wonderfulfoster dogs all in one location, Bark 'N' Town in Ingleside. And the best news of all -- Carlisle and Victoria went totheir new furever homes; Blaze, Sebastian, and Porscha(new girl) got their very own new foster homes. A very special 'Thank You' goes to Bark 'N' Town, our partner andsupporter of AAHI. They not only let us use their facility forthis event (again!), but have generously allowed our fosterdogs to stay with them when we are out of room -- and hadthe dogs groomed, too!! Their generosity has allowed us tosave dogs who might otherwise have had a very differentfuture...It was a wonderful day with lots of wagging tails!!

Happy Husky Bakery – 12th November 2011

Adopt A Husky was invited by our friends at Happy HuskyBakery in Evanston to be part of Community Days. Our volunteers and fosters, Selena & Kippens made sure thateveryone who stopped by was greeted properly! Thank you,Todd & Happy Husky Bakery for inviting us!

Meet REATTA…..A couple weeks ago, a petite red/white female was transported to usfrom downstate Illinois. Kevin L. met the transport and drove her upto our intake coordinator’s house. As soon as the back hatch of thecar opened, it was obvious that Reatta was not feeling well. Herbreathing was very heavy and you could just tell she was in need ofmedical attention. Reatta went directly from Kevin’s car to our medical coordinator’s car and off to the vet she went.

At initial exam, it wasn’t clear what was causing the breathing issue.Reatta was tested for heartworm and general tick bourne diseases. Both came back negative. X-rays were taken to see if there were anytumors or lung issues, none were found. It was determined that itwas a severe upper respiratory infection and an antibiotic was prescribed. After a few days, Reatta was feeling better, she had her appetite backand she was vocalizing any time Donna came near her to give her themeds. Each day Reatta was getting better until about a week later, blood was coming from her nose again. The vet was consulted and astronger antibiotic was given. Several days later, Reatta’s nose issue was worse. She was taken back tothe vet to be examined again. The vet agreed something wasn’t quite right. The vet said that she

wanted to do x-rays of her skull this time to see if there was a tumor in the nose orteeth issues.

What the x-rays revealed was shocking to everyone…..turns out Reattahad been shot and the buckshot was lodged just under her jaw. Reattahad come in with a scar on her nose but it wasn’t a recent scar so wereally didn’t give it much thought. The bullet had gone through hernose, broken several teeth and went through the bottom of her jawand lodged in the muscle under the jaw. Reatta had the pieces surgically removed but unfortunately, there are fragments in hernose that were not able to be reached with typical surgery. She also

had 5 teeth removed that were broken. Our vet has concerns about Reatta’s recovery because of the

fragments. It will take a specialist to remove the fragments but thereare several small pieces that she isn’t sure they will be able to safely

remove. Once Reatta is healed from her current surgery, she will be seen bythe Buffalo Grove Specialty Clinic to see if they feel they can remove the pieces

with highly specialized equipment. If fragments are left behind, will she need to be on antibiotics anytime she has a flare up? These are things to be dealt with inReatta’s future.

Adopt A Husky will do everything possible to get Reattahealthy, she deserves that much. This process will not be inexpensive. Her medical bill is at $700 already. If you wouldlike to donate to Reatta’s cause, you can do so by clicking onthe Donate button at www.Adoptahusky.com or you can senda check, cashier’s check or money order to Adopt A Husky, P.O. Box 87226, Carol Stream, IL 60188-7226.

Look for Reatta updates on Facebook or the Adopt A Huskywebsite.
