"THANKS"I want to say a great big thank you first to all our wonderfulreaders for a great year and secondly a big hug to all our

advertisers. I know some will think it strange that I first thankall our free loading readers who pay nothing before I thank theadvertisers who actually allow us to pay our bills. The fact isthough, without enthusiastic and loyal readers there would be

very little value for the advertiser and they would quickldisappear.A number of years ago we were visited by a business consultant

(trying to sell us something) who had a pretty close look at what we do. One observation that he made was that we were "Atrusted source of information" and by golly when I thoughtabout it he was right on. While smart readers might be a bitsuspicious about reading "Ravings" and only the very naive

would trust that "Musings" thing, the entire balance of eachand every community magazine can be read with complete

faith that the news is entirely accurate (barring occasionalerror) and without any hidden agenda to try and influence you.A recent survey of our staff revealed that every respondent was

proud or very proud to say they worked for OssekeagPublishing. I assume that this is because they recognize theimportance of the news that we deliver to our communities andthe amount of positive feedback that we receive from ourreaders and advertisers. A recent survey of Debbie and myselfrevealed we were also proud or very proud of the staff that weget to work with. A great big thank you to you!!!

On behalf of all of us here at Ossekeag, we want to wisheveryone a very, very, Merry Christmas and Season's GreetingsMikie now has to get working on his shopping list!! Doesanyone know where I can find 52 large garbage bags full of

doggie treats?? That will take care of the missus!! And for theJet ... he just wants peace on earth and a blazing fire in the wood stove, but he has offered, out of kindness, to help themissus with her doggie treats if she needs any professionaassistance.

As usual we will be closing at noon on Christmas Eve andrd

return on January 3 in the New Year. While shutting down forthat long doesn't help the old bottom line, it is a nice break forthe staff and ourselves after a pretty hectic and busy periodleading up to Christmas.

"At this Christmas Season we remember and honour those who are no longer with us and cherish those who are." 800

ILLEGAL DUMP HOTLINEIllegal dumps have no boundaries. In New Brunswick they canbe found along public roads, near streams, on privateproperty, along railroad lines, and other out-of-the-wayplaces.Illegal dumping is misplaced solid waste and raises concerns

over safety, property values and quality of life. It is alsoreferred to as ‘open dumping’, ‘fly dumping’, ‘midnightdumping’, and ‘wildcat dumping’, because materials areoften dumped in open areas, from vehicles and, at times - lateat night.

An examination of the literature suggests economics andlow risk are factors affecting decisions to illegally dumpMore specifically, research indicates those who illegally dumpdo so because they: Lack a sense of ownership; Believesomeone else will clean up what they have disposed of; Lackpublic awareness about the health and environmental risks.

If you are aware of an illegal dump site, please contact the“Illegal Dump Hotline”, or use another avenue, should youprefer, being sure to provide sufficient information as tolocation: Toll-Free 1-877-777-4218; Fax (506) 847-1369; Email [email protected]. 827

RING IN THE NEW YEAR SAFELY10 Safety reminders for this Holiday Season - between visitingfamily and friends, dodging fellow shoppers at the mall andkeeping track of your hat, scarf and gloves, it is easy tooverlook simple things pertaining to seasonal safety.Allstate Canada offers the following tips to ensure you have a

safe holiday season:If you’re going on vacation: Always keep valuable jewelry in a

safe or hidden in a separate area of your home, ideally awayfrom the bedroom. If it’s all kept in one place, in a jewelry box

it makes it easier for a thief to find; Don’t give thieves an openinvitation to visit your home. Be mindful when postingpersonal information on social media sites, such as TwitterFacebook and Foursquare. The information posted on thesesites is public and can be easily accessed even if you think

your profile is protected. Do not post that you are going on vacation or upload pictures while you are away; Make youhouse look occupied. Arrange to have snow removed from

your driveway or sidewalk while you’re away. Suspennewspaper subscriptions and ask a neighbour to collect maiand flyers. Use automatic indoor and outdoor light timers. If you’re hosting a party: Keep in mind that the safety of your

guests is your responsibility. If they drive home intoxicated you could be blamed, or worse, sued. Plan ahead by having aguest room ready for overnight guests, handing out taxphone numbers for your area and having cash availableReduce hazards around your home for your guests. Shovelsnow from your driveway and walkway and keep both free ofice. To help melt ice, consider using a naturalenvironmentally friendly product such as alfalfa meal orsand.; Childproof your home if you expect young guests to

visit. Cover electrical outlets, block staircases and removefurniture and decorations that can be tripped over by littlefeet.

If you’re staying home: Carefully inspect Christmas lightstrands. Each year, remember to dispose of any defectivelighting such as frayed cords, cracked bulbs or loose

connections. Do not overload electrical outlets with lightsBe sure to turn off or unplug any decorative lights before yougo to bed or leave your home; Do not use candles with openflames. Candles that are forgotten or burn to the end can be afire hazard. Consider purchasing battery operated candlesand lights. Remember decorations such as wreaths, trees orpaper decorations are flammable; Be prepared. Check thesmoke detectors on every level of your home. Change thebatteries if you have not done so in the past year; Cut up theboxes from your presents and put them in your recyclingDon’t advertise to thieves that you have a new stereo or TV in

 your home. 907

INSPIRED HOLIDAY GIFTS FROM THE

KITCHEN

If the best gifts come from the heart, certainly the next-bestgifts come from the kitchen. Culinary treats can be perfectpresents for your foodie friends or just about anyone on yourlist - neighbors, teachers, and others for whom moreelaborate gifts are neither expected nor required. What'smore, the possibilities are endless and can be adjusted for

varying palates, allergies and preferences. Here are severalsuggestions for serving up delicious holiday gifts this season.

Re-think your cookies: If you want to put a twist on tradition, consider some alternatives such as decorating greeting-card-sized cookies with personalized messages, filling decorative

jars with all of the dry ingredients needed for your favoritecookie recipe or giving the gift of dough - three differentkinds of cookie dough rolled into logs, wrapped in wax paperand tied at the ends with festive ribbons.

Take a dip: Dipping store-bought confections such aspeppermint sticks, candy canes, candied orange peel, shortbread cookies, or even fresh figs in good-quality chocolate (a mix of dark, milk and white chocolate is evenbetter!) will transform these everyday items into holiday-

worthy gifts.Think drinks: Make your own mix with ground chocolate and

sugar or package a high-quality store brand in a festively decorated jar, then add some peppermint sticks, chocolate-coated spoons or homemade marshmallows to the mix.

Have a jam session: Handmade jams, preserves and fruitcompotes are always appreciated. Your creation can beaccompanied by the recipe, some scones or great toastingbread, or even a decorative serving jam jar.

Bark that's as good as its bite: Chocolate bark is a deliciousno-bake gift that's so easy to make. Recipes are everywhereand you can customize the bark with your recipients' favoritenuts, dried fruits and other tasty tidbits.

And spice: For people who love to cook, great ingredientsmake exquisite gifts. Think about the gift of flavor in the formof spices, either from the bulk aisle at your favorite upscale

grocery chain or a well-loved specialty retailer. Spices can bepurchased in small amounts and then presented in decorativeairtight jars with handwritten labels. Other options include

your own spice blends or purchasing whole spices andpresenting them along with the appropriate tool for grindingor grating them.

Themed baskets of food will generate big smiles fromeveryone on your holiday list. Here are some ideas that areboth simple and special.Breakfast basket: Fill a basket with homemade pancake and

waffle mix and a bottle of real maple syrup, or go continental with a batch of freshly baked scones and a jar of lemon curd. For the caffeine lover, two mugs, one filled with a favoritegourmet coffee or tea and the other packed with some

homemade pastries or a jar of jam.Pasta basket: The centerpiece of this gift could be a jar of   your famous spaghetti sauce, which is surrounded by apackage of fresh pasta, a bulb of garlic and a wedge of Parmesan cheese.

Pizza basket: Start with a package of homemade pizzadough, add a jar of pizza sauce or pesto, then decorate thebasket with a merry mix of cheeses and popular pizza add-ons,such as pepperoni, olives, olive oil, garlic, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, and small packets of spices, such asoregano or red pepper flakes.

To ensure that your gifts don't go to waste, be sure to addinstructions for storing and handling the food -- especially those items that need to be refrigerated. CH8

MY LITTLE CHURCH Will it be there when I need it?

Everyone loves their own little church. No one wants to see itget closed down. It's where they were baptized, married, and

will be buried. A lot of people just use the church to behatched, matched, and dispatched . . . but, if that is the only time they darken the door of the church, how will it survive?

The little church where you grew up or of which you are amember needs to be maintained, heated, and certainly needsa spiritual leader (priest or pastor). Each little church needs

the prayerful presence of a congregation and stewardship -the 3-T's - time, talent, and treasure. Otherwise, when youneed the church, it will be gone - closed due to apathy, lack of interest.

It might help to consider reasons for maintaining churchattendance:-Because believers need help to reflect on the past week andsee it as just a small part of the journey of life.-Because you will benefit from being taught and led in

worship by others, rather than feeding on a constant diet of  your own choosing.

-Because you need regular reminders of your standing inChrist, help in acknowledging and confessing your sins, andteaching about God's truths.

-Because you need to hear how believers in the paststruggled, grew, and lived out their faith.

-Because you need to experience artistic and creativeexpressions of the faith, such as music, ritual, prayers,

architecture, or creeds.-Because you will benefit from silence before the Lord once ina while.-Because you need help to face the issues of life and faith aspresented through the teaching.-Because you need to hear about the experience of other

contemporary believers.-Because you need an alternative to the constant messages ofa culture that ignores God.-Because you need a conscious break from work and self

interests in order to concentrate on the Lord.-Because you need to hear reminders of God's love.-Because you need help in praying.-Because you need to belong to a community of faith that

includes others who are trying to live out the gospel.I was glad when you said to me, " ... Let us go to the house of

the LORD!" Psalm 122:1. See you in Church! cc15

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW Dreaming of a white Christmas? Many people look forward tonew-fallen snow to add to the picture of the holiday season. How many, though, give thought to how snow actually forms?Snowflakes are ice crystals that form in the clouds. Water

vapor freezes and clings to the dust particles in the air. As thecrystals group together, they form snowflakes.Snowflakes are hexagonal crystals, meaning they always havesix sides. Snowflakes can grow in different forms, includingcolumns, needles, plates, dendrites, columns with plates, and

irregular shapes. Complex shapes emerge as the flake movesthrough differing temperatures and humidity levels. When snowflakes melt and refreeze they may come down

from the sky in the form of a ball instead of a flake. These areknown as graupel.Snowflakes are unique in that no two are the same. Because

they are ice crystals, they are also clear in color. However, when gathered on the surface of roadways or other items, they collectively reflect the light and give off that white hue.

A snowflake is often the universal symbol for winter or  wintertime conditions. In Russia, people have long madepaper snowflakes during the Christmas season and hungthem in the windows. A snowflake also was the symbol of the

winter olympics in 2002.Although snowflakes are cold, snow can actually act as an

insulator. The intricate shapes of snowflakes trap air inbetween the flakes as they pile up. These tiny pockets of airprevent air from circulating, thus preventing heat from beingtransferred by convection. CH1

WHY ARE THERE OVERSIZED SOCKSHANGING ON YOUR MANTEL?

According to a very old tradition, the originalSaint Nicholas left his very first gifts of goldcoins in the stockings of three poor girls whoneeded the money for their wedding dowries. The girls had hung their stockings by the fire

to dry. Up until lately, it was traditional toreceive small items like fruit, nuts and candy in your stocking, but these have beenreplaced in the last half-century by moreexpensive gifts in many homes. The traditionof a lump of coal in the stockings of naughty children comesfrom Italy. CH14

ORIGINS OF THE CHRISTMAS WREATHThe Wreath which is traditionally displayed on the front doorof a home during the weeks of Advent and the Christmasseason once was a multiple role.

The wreath is intertwined with red ribbons which is done toexpress the festive spirit, while its evergreen leaves weresymbolic of the everlasting life promised to the faithful by thebirth of Jesus Christ. The circular shape was a reminder of thecrown of thorns placed on His head by the Roman soldiers

when they ridiculed Him as the 'King of the Jews'. Anotherreason for the wreath being used as part of celebrationsrelated to the god Bacchus, whose worshippers were thought

to have worn circular ivy crowns. The evergreen boughs were believed to protect a home from

evil spirits, which were thought to be plentiful during thisdark time of the year. During the Middle Ages the red berriesof holly were believed to keep witches out of the home; this is

why holly became the traditional and lucky evergreen for the wreath-making. CH 18

“THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS” - HISTORY

A Visit from St. Nicholas", also known as "The Night BeforeChristmas" and "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" from itsfirst line, is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 andgenerally attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, although theclaim has also been made that it was written by Henry Livingston, Jr.

The poem, which has been called "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American", is largely responsible forthe conception of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth

century to today, including his physical appearance, thenight of his visit, his mode of transportation, the number andnames of his reindeer, as well as the tradition that he bringstoys to children. Prior to the poem, American ideas about St.Nicholas and other Christmastide visitors variedconsiderably. The poem has influenced ideas about St.Nicholas and Santa Claus beyond the United States to therest of the English-speaking world and beyond.

According to legend, A Visit was composed by Moore on asnowy winter's day during a shopping trip on a sleigh. Hisinspiration for the character of Saint Nicholas was a localDutch handyman, as well as the historical Saint Nicholas.

While Moore originated many of the features that are stillassociated with Santa Claus today, he borrowed other aspects

such as the names of the reindeer. The poem was firstpublished anonymously in the Troy, New York, Sentinel onDecember 23, 1823, having been sent there by a friend of Clement Clarke Moore and was reprinted frequently thereafter with no name attached. Only later did Mooreacknowledge his authorship, and the poem was included in an1844 anthology of his works. Moore had written it for hischildren, and being a scholar and professor, did not wish atfirst to be connected with the poem, but his children insistedthat it be included in the anthology.

Moore's conception of St. Nicholas was borrowed from hisfriend Washington Irving's, but Moore portrayed his "jolly oldelf" as arriving on Christmas Eve rather than on ChristmasDay."By having St. Nicholas arrive the night before, Moore

"deftly shifted the focus away from Christmas Day with itsstill-problematic religious associations." As a result "New   Yorkers embraced Moore's child-centered version of Christmas as if they had been doing it all their lives."

In An American Anthology, 1787-1900, editor EdmundClarence Stedman reprinted the Moore version of the poem, including the German spelling of "Donder and Blitzen" headopted, rather than the earlier Dutch version from 1823,"Dunder and Blixem". Both phrases translate as "Thunder andLightning" in English, though the German word for thunderis "Donner", and the words in modern Dutch would be"Donder en Bliksem". CH12

DISTRICT 6 - LITERACY TIPSHow to support Teen Reading:

-Read to them! You could read stories, poems, articles from a newspaper ormagazine or even the Sunday comics.-Share! Talk to your teens about what you arereading and encourage them to talk about

what they are reading. Talking about what you've read makes it meaningful and provides

a bonding moment for you and your teen.

-Take them to the library or book store! Make sure they haveplenty of time to find books and materials that interest them.-Freedom of choice! Allow your teens the freedom to choosetheir reading materials. They read a lot of heavy material inschool, so let them pick something light or fun to keep theminterested in reading.-Stock up! The more books, magazines and other reading

materials you keep around the house, the more likely yourteen is to pick up the habit. Remember, you can borrow booksfrom the library!-Tune in! Planning on spending a lot of time in the car? Pickout an audio book to listen to with your teen.

-Reading is a gift! Give your teen books, magazinesubscriptions, graphic novels, audio books or gift certificatesto book stores as presents.-Lead by example! Make sure your teen knows you set asidetime for reading every day. If they see you enjoying reading asa hobby, they'll realize that reading is fun and a hobby worthpursuing.

SEASONAL SONG - HOLIDAY FAVORITEThe song "Winter Wonderland" has become a staple of holidayradio. Much like "Jingle Bells," "Winter Wonderland" was notintentionally written to become a Christmas carol, butevolved into one over time. The song was published in 1934 bycomposer Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard B. Smith. Smithresided in the town of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and wasinspired to write the lyrics of the song after seeing HonesdaleCentral Park and his own childhood home blanketed in snowSmith actually wrote the lyrics while being treated in the

West Mountain Sanitarium in Scranton, Pennsylvania, fotuberculosis. Many singers have performed the song throughout the years

so much so that it is often a standard song on artists' holidaycompilations. Some of the better-known and earlier versions

were made by The Andrews Sisters and Perry Como."Winter Wonderland" has evolved into one of those songs

that inspires visions of snowy splendor. Original lyrics featurea portion of the song mentioning young lovers being marriedspontaneously by a travelling "parson," a Protestant ministerSome thought those lyrics sent the wrong message tochildren, and another version was written with a circus clowninstead. The song has been sung with either bridge in placeand even both in lengthier versions of the tune.

For those who want to enjoy their own winter wonderlandand sing along with this classic winter carol, here are thelyrics:"Winter Wonderland"

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,In the lane, snow is glistening

A beautiful sight, We're happy tonight, Walking in a winter wonderland.Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird.He sings a love song, As we go along,

Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman,Then pretend that he is Parson BrownHe'll say, "Are you married?"

 We'll say, "No man,"

But you can do the job while you're in town.Later on, we'll conspire as we dream by the fire,To face unafraid, the plans that we've made,

Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman,

And pretend that he's a circus clown We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,Until the other kiddies knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,Though your nose gets a-chilling.

We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland. CH2

rd Wednesday, February 23  - 7:00pm, Annual General Meeting for2010 to be held at the Centre. Remember that your 2011membership needs to be paid in order for you to have votingprivileges at the meeting. More details will follow in upcomingE-letters. This year the Board and Executive plans to bringforward revisions to the HRAA Bylaws, following a motion that

was passed at out last AGM in February of 2010. The changesare still being reviewed, and they will be posted on our websiteonce they are approved by the Executive and Board.News from the Riverbank: The river had a coating of iceunusually early this year, with significant ice covering themain stem for several days earlier this week. But, the recentmild weather has melted all the ice, and is maintaining waterlevels at the two meter mark at the Centre. The ice moved ourmigrating waterfowl along, although there’s still some ducksand geese holding in the open water. The water levels haveprevented us from doing our annual fall redd count ofspawning salmon, but we are still hoping for a weather windowthat will let us do at least a partial count on the upper river. Alindications are that salmon are in the river in good numbers. One unusual sighting locally has been a partially albino deer

sighted repeatedly in the Meenan’s Cove area: the young buck(four or six points) is colored normally in its front end, but thehind-quarters are about 50 per cent white. Quite an unusualsight, especially since this deer seems willing to pose forphotos! There’s also been reports of an otter being sighted inthe lower river. Let us know if you’re seeing any unusua

wildlife sightings in the local area: we’d love to share theinformation with other members.

COMMUNITY FORUM HELD IN HAMPTON

School District 6 and theTown of Hampton invitedlocal residents of theH a m p t o n a r e a t o aCommunity Forum to learn

what Hampton youth aresaying about the community and to discuss how, as aschool community, we can

continue to support youth. The forum took place at theHampton Middle School inthe Leah McGowan Theatre

thon Monday, December 6 at7:00pm.

In the spring of 2010, and in partnership with HorizonHealth Network and the Town of Hampton, School District 6administered an Attitudes and Behaviors: Profiles of StudentLife survey with Hampton area students. This same survey, initially done in 2002, gave the community a starting point tomeasure how students spent their time, their perceptions of school and community life and their participation in a wide

range of risky behaviors. The results of the two surveys are  very interesting and were revealed at the forum. Whileimprovement was noted, it is evident that there are stillassets to grow.

The forum had many community participants from a variety of backgrounds. A presentation was made on the results of the student survey by the organizing committee and thensmall breakout groups were formed to discuss the elementsof the survey and what things could be done to make theHampton area a more asset-rich community.

Results of these discussions are being compiled by theHampton Leisure Services Advisory Committee and will bemade available to the participants as well as any otherinformation on the developmental assets through Gena

Fowler, Director of Leisure Services at 832-6201 [email protected]. 134

ORIGINS OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

One of the most common symbols of Christmas - at least inthe United States and Canada - is the twinkling Christmastree, which is often depicted with piles of shiny gifts under itsbottom branches. The origin of the beloved holiday evergreenhas been debated for centuries, with some historiansasserting that it has Christian roots and others contendingthat its roots are pagan. However, many explanations tracethe custom of having a decorated evergreen tree inside the

thhome to 16 century Germany, while others go back 300

years earlier to a tradition that began with the Miracle Playssponsored by local churches.

While its specific origin is unclear, we do know that theChristmas tree tradition spread first across Europe and thenthroughout the world. In the US, Christmas trees were firstseen in communities with prominent German populations in

th ththe late 18 and early 19 century.

Throughout the world, Christmas trees are a symbol of thecontinuation of life through the dark, cold months of winterand are linked both to the winter solstice and the belief thatthe birth of Jesus brought light into the world. In many partsof the world, Christmas trees have long been set up and takendown according to the calendar. Traditionally, they werebrought into the house on Christmas Eve and removed theday after Twelfth Night (January 6th), and varying from thesedates was considered bad luck.

Red + Green = Christmas: While the colors green and redare now synonymous with Christmas, the association of thesecolors with the holiday originally had nothing to do withSanta, elves or even mistletoe. Like so much holiday lore, theorigins of the red-and-green Christmas theme have long beendebated, but the explanation that appears to be most deeply

throoted in fact begins in 14 century Europe, when Adam and

thEve's Day was celebrated each year on December 24 . At thatime, churches presented dramatic performances - calledMiracle Plays - that were intended to teach religious topics toa largely illiterate population. For Adam and Eve's Day, people

gathered to watch the "Paradise Play," which presented thestory of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Since no appletrees were available in the middle of winter to represent theTree of Good and Evil on stage, a pine tree with apples tied toits branches was used instead. The use of a "makeshift" apple tree worked so well that many

churches adopted its use. The "Paradise Tree" eventuallybecame so popular in Germany that people started to erectevergreen trees in their homes and decorate them with redapples. Over time, the green of the trees and the red of theapples became widely associated with the celebration oChristmas. CH10

WHY DO WE SEND CHRISTMAS CARDS?

Dating back to the Victorian Days, we find the origin of the

Christmas card. Sir Henry Cole and John Horsley invented a

card that displayed three panels. On these panels, several

pictures are drawn. On the middle panel there is a depiction

of a family at a festive table scene. The side two panels show

an act of Christmas charity, such as clothing the poor. At the

bottom of the card was written "Merry Christmas and Happy

New Year." Perhaps this origin dates back even a bit further

with something known as "Christmas Pieces." Young British

boys away from there family, while at school, wrote home to

greet their parents, but more importantly to show them how

their writing was progressing. Today, Christmas cards are

sent as a token of holiday affection and greetings. CH 19

WINTER-PROOF YOUR HOME Your home may protect you from the harsh winds and chillingtemperatures of a Canadian winter, but have you taken stepsto protect it?:1. What may seem like small cracks in pipes can actually leakout gallons of water and cause considerable damage to yourhome. If you notice that water has stopped running from yourtaps and suspect frozen pipes are the culprit, call a plumberimmediately to assess the situation.2. Disconnect all garden hoses and purchase covers foroutdoor faucets to keep the cold out.3. Insulate pipes that are most likely to be exposed to thecold, such as those located in the attic or crawlspaces of yourhome.4. Seal any cracks in all pipes that could let in the cold. This

will help to keep pipes from freezing and save money onheating costs as well.5. On extremely cold days, allow several different faucets todrip slightly with lukewarm water, as the constant movementof the water can keep them from freezing.6. Shut off the water before you trave and open all faucets todrain your pipes before you leave. Excess water can freeze andcause pipes to burst while you are away.7. Know how to shut off the main water valve in your home andshow everyone living in your home how to shut it off in case of an emergency.

8. Have your furnace inspected annually, preferably beforethe temperature drops below zero.9. If you have a fireplace or use a woodstove, be sure to have

your chimney cleaned and inspected and take properprecautions when lighting these fires.10. Familiarize yourself with your home’s insurance policy todetermine what is and isn’t covered.

STAPLE OF HOLIDAY DECORChances are, holiday revelers will find themselves underneaththe mistletoe at least once this holiday season. While theymight know what to do when that time comes, they might notknow the history of that plant above their heads. Especiallysacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was believed to bestow lifeand fertility, while also protecting against poison and servingas an aphrodisiac. Mistletoe would later take on a morepolitical meaning, as the ritual of cutting the mistletoe cameto symbolize the emasculation of the old king by his

successor.Nowadays, mistletoe is typically hung in doorways or

entryways from one room to another. This tradition can alsotrace itself back several centuries to the Middle Ages. Duringthe Middle Ages, branches of mistletoe were hung fromceilings to ward off evil spirits. Throughout Europe, mistletoe

was placed over doorways in the house as well as the stables asa means to preventing the entrance of witches.

The tradition of kissing underneath the mistletoe likelystems from the belief that mistletoe bestows fertility and isoften associated with the Roman festival of Saturnalia, aperiod of merrymaking that pre-dated Christmas. In 18thcentury England, a young lady standing underneath themistletoe could not refuse to be kissed. Once kissed, the kiss

would signify deep romance or eternal friendship.History also suggests that mistletoe was a symbol of peace

In Scandinavia, mistletoe was considered a plant of peace  When standing underneath the mistletoe, enemies coulddeclare a truce and spouses could end any marital turmoi

 with a kiss. CH5

DEVOURING FRUITCAKE FACTSThe holidays and fruitcake have long been intertwinedFruitcakes are often mocked, detested and discarded. Fewgifted foods create such strong derision. However, fruitcake istradition. And as most people know, Christmas is all abouttradition. Fruitcake is an enduring tradition, most simplybecause the food, well, endures. Most fruitcakes will last 8 to12 months if wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and stored in anairtight container. If frozen, their lifespan could be endlessJokingly, many families have said fruitcake is the only food

durable enough to become an heirloom. While mocked, itmay entice a few people to know just how fruitcake hasbecome a holiday treat.

The oldest references to fruitcake date back to Romantimes. Ancient crusaders and hunters consumed fruitcakemade with preserved fruits, pomegranate seeds, pine nutsraisins, and honey. Fruitcake was a durable commodity thatcould persevere on long trips. Because of its combination ofingredients, fruitcake was also a good source of energy, muchthe way a trail mix is good for today's hikers. In the 1700s, Europeans baked a ceremonial fruitcake at the

end of the nut harvest. It was saved and eaten the following year at the harvest, with the hopes it would spur anothersuccessful harvest. Fruitcake evolved to more of a delicacy inthe 1800s, even being served with tea in high society. It isrumored that Queen Victoria waited a year to eat a giftedfruitcake as a show of restraint and moderation.

Fruitcake can be an integral part of a holiday celebrationand not because it's being used to block drafts from under adoor. Instead of giving fruitcakes as gifts, they should beserved as part of the holiday feast. In addition to the sugarcookies and pies on the Christmas table, celebrants can serveslices of fruitcake featuring their favorite ingredients. CH6

 MOORE FROM OTTAWA

Rob Moore, MP Fundy Royal

The past year has seen many economicchallenges to small businesses around the

world. In Canada, our government is  working to ensure that our smallbusinesses are the best-equipped to deal

with these challenges. This is one of thereasons that the International Monetary Fund has ranked Canada’s economy as thestrongest economy in the G-7 for 2010 and

2011. This is good news for Canada and good news for oursmall business owners. This year’s Global Entrepreneur

th st Week, from November 15 -21 , was cause for celebration.Small and medium-sized enterprises are the foundation of

our economy because they account for 98% of all businessesin Canada. Our government is proud to stand with them toensure that they have access to the tools they need tosucceed in the market. One of the ways we haveaccomplished this is through partnering with smallbusinesses through the Canada Small Business FinancingProgram, which delivers approximately $1 billion infinancing annually through loans to small businesses and

start-up companies.Assisting entrepreneurs succeed in the current climate is

one of the top priorities of our government, which is one of the reasons we have increased the Small Business Thresholdto $500,000. Our government also believes thatentrepreneurs and small business owners should be able to

work directly with the market, and this is why we have cutfederal red tape 20% from 2006 to 2009. We have also set up aRed Tape Reduction Commission to study ways to make themarket more accessible to our Canadian small businessesand more affordable for Canadian families. We also loweredthe corporate tax rate to 11% so that our entrepreneurs canbe more successful in Canada. Along with this, we have cut

the GST for all Canadians from 7% to 5%, and introduced aTax Free Savings Account, so that you can keep more of yourmoney in your own pocket. With the end of the year approaching, our government is

looking to small business owners and families from ourregion to provide suggestions for our upcoming SpringBudget. If you have suggestions or comments, I wouldencourage you to get involved in the Pre-Budgetconsultations by visiting www.fin.gc.ca/prebudget-prebudgetaire/1-eng.asp and leaving your comments. 513

"SENTINEL'S" THERE FOR YOU( But You Have To Register )

"Sentinel" is the new high-tech tool to help the Town oHampton and its Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) ifthere is an emergency. It was recently installed in the townand in several other southern New Brunswick communitiesincluding Saint John. While it has several components, theone that will affect most people is the one that will notify us inthe case of an emergency. While the EMO hopes an emergency will never happen, it has

to be prepared in case one does. One part of that preparationis making sure there's a way of telling people, first of all, thatthere's an emergency; what sort of emergency, and then whatthey should do about it.

That's where "Sentinel" comes in. When the Town oHampton and its EMO decide that a situation is severeenough to be declared an emergency, it can activate"Sentinel". The system will send a message or messages tocitizens to let them know what's going on. These messagescan go out by e-mail, text, or telephone - or all three; but inorder to be notified, you have to be on the list; and in order tobe on the list, you have to sign up. It's free, and there are acouple of ways to do it.

You can go to the Town of Hampton website and click on"Register Now for the new Emergency Preparedness Systemon the right-hand side of the page. Then follow theinstructions. There is also a list of Frequently AskedQuestions and Answers there. If you wish, you can also drop into register at the Town Office on Centennial Road.

Emergencies do happen, and the goal of the Town and itsEmergency Measures Organization is to make sure no one ishurt and there is little or no damage to property. One way todo that is to make sure everyone knows what's going onThat's why it's important to get yourself signed up on the"Sentinel" system. 124

KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED - CHRISTMAS BREAK

Winter break can be the perfectrespite for school-aged children.

Although not quite halfway throughthe school year, the timing of winterbreak does come when kids might bepreoccupied with the holiday seasonand all that comes with it. Kids may be distracted about parties andpresents, butparents maybe

preoccupied with finding ways theirkids can spend their time during

  winter break - a typically two-week

hiatus from school that begins shortly before Christmas and ends with kids'return to school shortly after New

Year's Day. Parents facing the dilemmaof finding something for kids to doduring winter break should considerthe following tips.

-Take a vacation: Vacation is the easy  way out. Winter break might mark theonly time until summer that parentscan spend quality time with their kidscompletely away from the distractionsof everyday life. Vacation can mean a

trip to warmer climates or simply packing up the car to go spend time

with the grandparents. If there's any   vacation time to spare, considerhitting the road.

-Teach kids some practical lessons:Kids likely won't miss the classroomduring winter break, but that doesn'tmean there aren't enjoyable ways forkids to learn while they're away fromschool. Teach kids practical lessons, like how to cook a favorite meal or how to fix things around the house. This

gives parents a chance to spend somequality time with their kids whileencouraging kids to learn beyond theclassroom. And who knows, suchlessons at home may uncover a child'shidden talent.

-Encourage kids to read for pleasure:Reading improves vocabulary and canstimulate a child's imagination.During the winter break, encouragekids to read a book or the daily newspaper for pleasure, assuring them

there won't be any quizzes or tests after each chapter. Get

the ball rolling with a few books given as presents duringChristmas or Chanukah. Or take a trip to the local librar yand let kids choose their own books.-Soak up some snow: Parents who work from home can livenup the day during winter break by heading outside with thekids to build a snowman or have a snowball fight. Moms anddads will enjoy the break from work while kids get some funin the snow. CH3

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS - ORIGINS

The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas carothat enumerates a series of increasingly grand gifts given oneach of the twelve days of Christmas. Although first publishedin England in 1780, textual evidence may indicate the song isFrench in origin.

The twelve days in the song are the twelve days startingChristmas day, or in some traditions, the day after Christmas

th(December 26 Boxing Day or St. Stephen's Day, as being thefeast day of St. Stephen Protomartyr) to the day before

thEpiphany, or the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6 , or theTwelfth Day). Twelfth Night is defined by the Oxford EnglishDictionary as "the evening of the fifth of January, precedingTwelfth Day, the eve of the Epiphany, formerly the last day othe Christmas festivities and observed as a time ofmerrymaking.

Although the specific origins of the chant are not known, itpossibly began as a Twelfth Night "memories-and-forfeits"game, in which a leader recited a verse, each of the playersrepeated the verse, the leader added another verse, and so onuntil one of the players made a mistake, with the player whoerred having to pay a penalty, such as offering up a kiss or asweet. The earliest well-known version of the music of the song was

recorded by English scholar James O. Halliwell in 1842, andth

he published a version in 4 edition The Nursery Rhymes oEngland (1846), collected principally from 'oral tradition'. Inth

the early 20 century, English composer Frederic Austin wrote an arrangement in which he added his melody from"Five gold rings" onwards, which has since become standardThe copyright to this arrangement was registered in 1909and is still active by its owners, Novello & Co. Limited.

TRANSITIONS - HIGH SCHOOL & BEYOND

There is a flurry of activity at this time of year as we prepare for

the holiday season and the long winter ahead. This passing fromone season to another is made easier and more enjoyableultimately, with thoughtful planning, preparation and a positiveattitude.

Similarly, the transition to life after high school is madesmoother with a plan. For high school students with anintellectual disability, such as Down's syndrome or AutismSpectrum Disorder (ASD), careful planning is also important. Atransition plan begins with a vision that is positive and possiblefor the future of the student and his or her family. It is a processthat respects student choices at all stages, and is meant toaddress the particular needs of the individual and will be asunique as the student is.

A Transition Facilitator can help with this process by meeting

with the student, family and school-based team to discuss thestudent's goals and identify the services and supports that wilbe needed to meet these objectives. The goals can be related toemployment, post-secondary training, social inclusion orindependent living.

The Transition Facilitator may take the leadership role in thedevelopment of a transition plan. While the role of professionalsis important, the process will be far more effective if a studentand his or her parents take an active role in sharing ideas andresponsibilities. Parents can take a leadership role bydeveloping ongoing and positive communication with teachersand the other professionalsinvolved. It also helps whenfamilies have been proactive

by fostering a growingindependence and healthy self-esteem at home by addingrights and responsibilities asthe child grows and maturesover time.

GO GREEN WITH HOLIDAY CLEANUPThe holiday season has arrived. Celebrations and gifts willbe at the forefront of the festivities. Once all of the gifts aretorn open, there are bound to be mounds of wrappingpaper in each and every home, which can mean damaging

waste for the environment. Wrapping paper, boxes andribbons tossed straight into the garbage can mean thatpounds of added trash will end up in landfills across thecountry. According to the Clean Air Council, an additional5 million tons of waste is generated during the holidays inthe United States. Four million tons of that waste is

wrapping paper and shopping bags. There are smartersolutions to dealing with holiday clean-up.

The first step is choosing environmentally responsible  wrapping materials. Glossy, metallic or embellished  wrapping paper may not be easily recycled - or evenrecyclable at all. Instead, look for wrapping paper that ismade from recycled materials and can, in turn, be recycledonce more. Consider wrapping gifts in plain, brownmailing paper and decorate the outside with earth-friendly paints.Next, nix the tissue paper inside of gift boxes. It doesn'treally serve a functional purpose, except for further

delaying the reveal of the gift inside. Tissue paper aloneaccounts for a lot of extra trash. Skipping it means a person

will be saving money and the environment. Here are someother green cleanup tips:

-Designate a child or adult to gather the discarded wrapping materials and sort the piles into trash. Ribbonsand bows can be reused, as can many gift boxes and bags.-Shred paper items that are bound for the trash to reducetheir volume and require fewer trash bags for transport.-Find out if a shipping store will take foam peanuts and air-filled wraps to be recycled.-Be sure to collect expired batteries and recycle them at afacility that does so.

-Christmas trees can be taken down and sent for mulching. Many communities collect trees after the season is over forthis purpose.

Because there is bound to be some extra garbage duringthe holidays, individuals can take steps to curb trash inother aspects of their lives this time of the year. Some ideasinclude using cloth napkins and actual dishes and cutlery instead of disposable items. Before purchasing new giftpaper, sort through last year's collection to see what itemscan be reused. Cutting the front off of holiday cards andusing them as gift tags is another way to recycle. CH4

WE LIVE IN THE COUNTRY, THERE IS NO RUSH!As you all know, the 2010-2011 hockey season is in full swing. Iwould like to take this opportunity to remind everyone attendinggames in our Community Center that offensive behavior andlanguage while in the building will not be tolerated. Atminimum, the consequences of such behavior will result in theoffender being asked to leave. If the circumstances are severeand there is evidence supported by witnesses, a criminal chargeof Disturbing the Public contrary to Section 175 of the CriminalCode could be brought against those found in contravention.

Please keep in mind that there are usually small children presentat the games and everyone would rather watch our HamptonTeams compete than deal with unruly patrons of the rink.

Patrols will be made by uniformed and plain clothes officersduring High School games both inside and outside the rink.Anyone found in possession of liquor or other illegal substanceswill be charged accordingly. Let’s all enjoy our national sportand avoid these problems! GO HAMPTON!

The second thing I would like to bring to your attention is torequest that the driveway from Main Street to the Hall Road atthe RCMP Building not be used as a thoroughfare to avoid thetraffic light at the intersection of these streets. As well, pleaserefrain from using these areas to turn around. Both of theseactions could create an unsafe situation for both our officers andthe public as there may be an emergency vehicle leaving theoffice at any given time.

Finally, since this will be the final issue of the Herald beforeChristmas and for 2010, I would like to thank everyone forcontinuing to support our Community Angels Program withyour generous donations. On behalf of all of the employees of the Hampton RCMP Detachment I would like to wish all of you avery Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please make it asafe one for you and your families. SCHOOL DISTRICT 6

SCHOOL CLOSURE/DELAY

DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

School District 6 will communicate all information about

school closures and delays prior to 6:30 a.m. on local

radio stations, toll free at 1-888-868-6555, Snowline at

8 4 8 - S N O W ( 7 6 6 9 ) , D i s t r i c t w e b s i t e a t

www.district6.nbed.nb.ca, or follow us on Twitter at

SchoolDistrict6. On days when the weather is uncertainit is good to check and see if schools are open.

The School District will consider one of the following

options when making decisions regarding school

closures during inclement weather situations:

1. Schools will remain open as usual. Therefore,

no announcements will be made.

2. All schools will be closed for the day.

3. Some schools will be closed (by geographic

region).

4. Buses are delayed one hour, with all schools in

the district opening at their regular time to

receive students.

5. Schools may be closed early when the weather

conditions are anticipated to deteriorate

significantly during the day. Every effort will be

made to personally notify elementary parents.

If the weather is deteriorating, you may want to

check your home phone for a message, or our

District snow line or website. It is important to

ensure that alternate arrangements are in

place for your child/children if schools are

dismissed early.

Ultimately, parents have the final decision in inclement

weather situations. If you feel that walking/drivingconditions in your particular area are hazardous, you

may choose not to send your child/children to school.

Absences on these days will not be a factor in

determining a student’s attendance record.

Andrew Hopper, Superintendent

11 CHRISTMASES, REALLY! Amazing to think this will be our eleventh Christmas with

Ossekeag Publishing. We have spoken of it often, but this was our first year of participating in the Hampton Santa

Parade with a float. A special thank you to all the members

of our extended Ossekeag family who made this possible.

We had a blast. What a great start to the joy of the holiday

season, and a reminder that it is about joy, about family and

about community. As for myself, my shopping is under control, my cooking

and cleaning always get done (as much as necessary

anyway), and Santa will find us regardless of how clean the

floors are or even if there is a cobweb or two in the corners.

Christmas is about friends and family, love and laughter,

peace and goodwill to all. And if the tree falls down in the

middle of the night (one year it came down twice), or youforget to turn on the oven, or the dog eats the turkey (or

even only half of it), all of these "disasters" become part of

the family history to laugh about for years to come. There

is nothing you could buy and gift wrap for me that can

compare to having everyone together for Christmas . . . and

Mum's amazing Christmas feast that she puts on every

year.I hope you will have a fabulous holiday season, that you

will relax and enjoy time with family and friends, and that

each of us can extend a little of that seasonal warmth to

those among us who have burdens they are struggling with.

Big hugs and kisses to all you faithful readers who are the

reason for our humble success; may you have the very best

of everything that money can't buy. A special Merry

Christmas to my Mum, the true heart of our family, to Mike

who loves to tease but most importantly loves, to my

daughters who have become amazing young women, to my

brother Wayne who gives generously of his time to all of us

when our cars go "phooey" or something doesn't work, and

to Carmen, the grandest grand-daughter, who brings

smiles to our faces every day. Miss you Dad. 801
