WARM UP

Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) about the following:

Think about what your life would be like without a skeleton. What activities would be hard for you to do? What

would it feel like to not have a skeleton? Why is it important to have

a skeletal system?

THE HUMAN BODY UNIT

The Human Body Unit

BIG IDEA: The human body is made up of systems that work together to perform necessary functions. These systems make it possible for humans to grow, reproduce, and maintain life.

Part I:

The human body is

complex.

The skeletal system provides

support and protection.

The muscular system makes

movement possible.

Part II:

The respiratory system gets oxygen and

removes carbon dioxide.

The digestive system

breaks down food.

The urinary system removes

waste materials.

Part III:

The circulatory

system transports materials.

The immune system

defends the body.

The integumentary system shields the

body.

Part IV:

The nervous system

responds and controls.

The endocrine

system helps

regulate body

conditions.

The reproductiv

e system allows the

production of offspring.

Part V:

The human body

changes over time.

Systems in the body

function to maintain health.

Science helps people prevent and

treat disease.

11/29NOTE-TAKING STRATEGY = OUTLINE

(FEEL FREE TO BE CREATIVE WITH COLOR IN YOUR NOTES)

Taking notes helps you understand new information. The notes you take can also be used as a study guide for later review. It’s important to take

organized notes so that you can learn & understand the material.

3 TYPES OF JOINTS IN OUR BODIESI. Movable

A. Ball and socketB. HingeC. PivotD. Gliding

II. Slightly movableIII. Immovable (fixed)

WHAT ARE JOINTS?A place where two bones

meet.

Page 9: D.E.A.R

I. MOVABLE JOINTSA. Ball and socket - Moves in any

direction (Circular movement,

Rotation)

1. Where in the body:ShouldersHips

Page 10: D.E.A.R

I. MOVABLE JOINTSB. Hinge Joints (Think: Door Hinge) - Moves in

only one direction 1. Where in the body:

ElbowsKneesKnuckles

Page 11: D.E.A.R

FYI!!!! 1. MOVABLE JOINTS C. Pivot Joints – allow rotating movement from

side to side

1. Where in the body:top of the neck

Page 12: D.E.A.R

FYI!!! 1. MOVABLE JOINTS D. Gliding Joints – allow sliding

movement back and forth.1. Where in the body:

wrist Carpals

Page 13: D.E.A.R

II. SLIGHTLY MOVABLE JOINTSA. Type of Movement:

Can flex slightly

1. Where in the body:Ribs to sternumVertebrae

Cartilage allows the vertebrae in our back to move slightly --------

Page 14: D.E.A.R

III. IMMOVABLE JOINTSA. Type of Movement:

Cannot move at all

1. Where in the body:Cranium (skull bones)

Page 15: D.E.A.R

WHAT DO JOINTS ALLOW US TO DO?

Joints enable us to MOVE!! Joints allow us to rotate our arms and

hips Joints also allow us to bend our fingers,

elbows, and knees

Cartilage = Allows joints to move easily, cushions bones, and supports soft tissue

LIFE WITHOUT JOINTS PARAGRAPH* Write a paragraph that answers the following questions completely. Check off each question as you answer it. Please be detailed, creative, and make sure your response is at least 8 sentences long.

□ What is the definition of a joint? □ Why are joints so important?

□ What would your life be like if you did not have joints? Describe what waking up

and getting ready for school would be like if you did not have any joints.

TALK ABOUT ALL 4 DIFFERENT KINDS:ball and socket slidingHinge immovable
