Once again we would like to take this opportunity to extend best wishes to the many families in our community celebrating Lunar New Year. This is the year of the Dog, commencing on February 16th. The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese zodiac, after the Rooster, and before the Pig. We would like to wish a very happy and prosperous year to our Van Horne families. Many of our staff, students and their families will be celebrating Lunar New Year. In keeping with our inclusive practices, it is important to recognize that in past this celebration has sometimes been referred to exclusively as Chinese New Year. However, Lunar New Year is actually celebrated by people in a number of different countries including (but not limited to) China, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia, Tibet, Singapore and Taiwan. In addition, please let the office know of a cultural event which the school can recognize by helping decorate the front foyer. Thank you to Daisy Singh, Loretta, Alison Chu, Lily Wu, Rosalina Barril and Lucy Lui for all the beautiful decorations and for organizing the red envelopes, fortune cookies and mandarin oranges. Raising Money for Children’s Hospital! Thank you to Ms. Barber’s Grade 5 Students: Chloe, Lauren, Addison, Natasha and Seraphine for organizing a bake sale event to raise $385.85 for children’s hospital. We are really proud to know that the idea for bake sale to raise money for the hospital was entirely the students. Once again, our Van Horne students made us proud for organizing this important event. To Ms. Barber and the parent helpers, thank you for supporting our students. Well done!

Dear Van Horne Families

LUNAR NEW YEAR! Once again we would like to take this opportunity to

extend best wishes to the many families in our community celebrating Lunar

New Year. This is the year of the Dog, commencing on February 16th. The Dog

occupies the eleventh position in the Chinese zodiac, after the Rooster, and

before the Pig. We would like to wish a very happy and prosperous year to our

Van Horne families.

Many of our staff, students and their families will be celebrating Lunar New

Year. In keeping with our inclusive practices, it is important to recognize that in

past this celebration has sometimes been referred to exclusively as Chinese

New Year. However, Lunar New Year is actually celebrated by people in a

number of different countries including (but not limited to) China, Korea,

Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia, Tibet, Singapore and Taiwan. In addition, please

let the office know of a cultural event which the school can recognize by helping

decorate the front foyer. Thank you to Daisy Singh, Loretta, Alison Chu, Lily

Wu, Rosalina Barril and Lucy Lui for all the beautiful decorations and for

organizing the red envelopes, fortune cookies and mandarin oranges.

Raising Money for Children’s Hospital!

Thank you to Ms. Barber’s Grade 5 Students: Chloe, Lauren, Addison,

Natasha and Seraphine for organizing a bake sale event to raise $385.85

for children’s hospital. We are really proud to know that the idea for

bake sale to raise money for the hospital was entirely the students.

Once again, our Van Horne students made us proud for organizing this

important event. To Ms. Barber and the parent helpers, thank you for

supporting our students. Well done!

Choice Programs: The Vancouver School Board also offers

programs of choice that include French Immersion, Early

Mandarin Bilingual, Indigenous Focus, Montessori or Fine

Arts. If you are planning to apply for one of the district

programs you still need to register your child at your English

catchment school. Choice Programs online registration

opens January 15, 2018. You can apply to attend a choice

program through our online application and to receive more

information by visiting https://www.vsb.bc.ca/school-

registration

Cross Boundary: If you are interested in having your child

attend an English school that is not your catchment school,

then you should apply through the cross-boundary

application process. Applications will be accepted at the

requested school beginning February 1, 2018. The cross-

boundary application deadline is February 28, 2018. Cross-

boundary applications will only be considered once all

catchment students have been accommodated.

Mini School: For students in Grade 7 that applied to a

District Mini School Program, first offers go out on

February 20th. Please visit:

http://www.vsb.bc.ca/programs/mini-school-registration

Grade 7 Students, Parents/Guardians: A reminder to

Grade 7 students to submit their Grade 8 Application to Ms.

Cianelli in the office or you can drop it off directly to the

high school. Please note if you are planning on applying Cross

Boundary to one of the high schools, you MUST also register

at your catchment school. If you need any help with this

process, please let the office know. Thank you!!

GRADE 6 & 7 PARENTS/GUARDIANS: SACY is hosting a

series of workshops for parents/guardians entitled “Building

Bridges with our Teen”. The session will explore “ the

developmental changes (social, emotional and cognitive) of

adolescence and explores ways our parenting can shift to

accommodate these changes. The parent-child relationship

is a strong protective factor for youth during the teen

years and our ability to keep the lines of communication

open and the relationship strong are key to supporting youth

in healthy decisions across a number of areas (from

academics to friendships to substance use and more). The

workshops are interactive and lively, and parents regularly

report how useful they are in practical skills to reduce

tension and support youth. Seating is limited. Please

register on eventbrite: www.SACY.eventbrite.ca

THANK YOU VAN HORNE PAC: We are very grateful

to the PAC and Van Horne Parents for supporting Van

Horne’s Literacy Program. We want to acknowledge

your generous offer of $3000!!

DIVISION 9—PROJECT BASED LEARNING

I had the great pleasure of visiting Ms. Ko’s and Mr. Jovick’s class to see our

grade three students engaged in their learning. The students worked hard on

an inquiry project researching areas of their interest. This was a great

opportunity for Grade 3 students to demonstrative their understanding using a

variety of medium including technology to show case their work. A big “Thank

you” to Ms. Ko and Mr. Jovick providing an opportunity to the students.

SCHOOL GARDEN: Currently Van Horne is exploring and looking at ways in

which students can work collaboratively to participate in a greening project

which will include installation of 4 garden beds. A variety of plants and herbs

will be planted in the beds including Indigenous plants. The teachers

participating in this project received a grant from Think & Eat Green@School

of 1601.00 to support this project. In addition, Mr. Bruyere, who is heading

this project also presented a proposal to the PAC and the PAC has contributed

1200.00 toward this. We look forward to some of our grade 2-7 students

participating in this outdoor education.

On Wednesday, February 7th several divisions took

part in Global School Play Day. Van Horne was just one school from hundreds

around the world bringing back unstructured creative play without adult

intervention. Students were encouraged to bring toys and interact with each

other without any adult telling them what or how to play. Our students had a

great time and it was wonderful to see students working together and solving

problems peacefully. Overall, it was a huge success! Way to go Van Horne

students! Please visit www.globalschoolplayday.com for more information and to

watch a short TEDx video by Peter Gray on the decline of play. Thanks to Ms.

Aliphtiras for inviting staff members to participate in this important initiative.

Poem by Nicholas Park, Div 8

The supermoon rose For the second time this month

It was big and red The blood moon was pink

Because earth blocked the sunlight The sun is ugly

Because of the bright colour And now it's really shiny

Our Leadership Box is growing with our blue leadership

cards. Anytime a staff catch a student demostrating

the Van Horne Code of Conduct they receive a Blue

Leadership Card and twice a month the office pulls out

2 winners from the box.

Van Horne students truly understand the value of

service. Service for the sake of service is our motto.

As Dorothy Height notes, “Without community

service, we would not have a strong quality of life.”

We have many students in Grade 4-7 that are actively

involved as our community Leaders: Office Monitors, PA

Announcers, Playground Leaders, Library Monitors, Gym

Equipment Monitors, Safety Patrol, AV Crew, MCs

and Student Council. We would like to recognize these

students for participating in the different roles. Please

check out our Van Horne Website for the names of our

leaders. Every child is welcome to help out in any way they

would like to – it’s been great seeing the little ones Grade 3

and 3 coming in and asking how they can help!!

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART: We are thrilled that Sir William Van Horne is

supporting the Jump Rope for Heart Program and we look forward to having all

our students participate. This program helps to promote health among youth by

teaching skip rope activities and getting children excited about fundraising for

the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In the coming days, your child will be coming

home with a pledge form. You can help by encouraging family, friends and co-

workers to donate to this worthy cause. On-line donations can also be made.

More information to come.

Why should you donate?

Not only are you supporting a worthy cause but your donations will help our

school earn badly needed sports equipment that will help keep our students

healthy and active.

How can you donate?

Your child can collect money in their pledge form or donations can be made on-

line. On-line donations will earn our school extra points for purchasing gym

equipment. As well, when donating on-line a tax receipt can be printed off

immediately. More information will be coming home with your child on Tuesday.

When will it take place?

All students will be jumping on Friday, March 9th. Pledge forms and monies

collected need to be handed in to your child’s teacher no later than Tuesday,

March 13th.

Over a 3 year period, Van Horne students had raised $25,119 for the Heart

and Stroke Foundation! Please help us reach our goal of $7,000.
