Dear Students, (and Parents/ Guardians)

I am delighted to introduce to you the Year 9 Option process.

Despite the uncertainty which surrounds the educational climate, the comprehensive

information package which we have collated this year ensures that you will be some of the

most well informed and well-prepared students who have made Key Stage 4 option

choices.

This booklet is designed to help inform you about the choices that are available to you and

is complementary to both the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ document and the ‘Option

Videos’. You will also have an opportunity to speak (virtually!) to a member of staff at Year

9 Options Evening on 11.03.2021. This thorough information package provides clear

guidance so that you, with the help and guidance of your parent/guardian, can make an

informed decision.

You have an element of choice in your Key Stage 4 programme of study. You have

experienced a range of subjects at Key Stage 3 and are now able to make certain option

choices for study at Key Stage 4. Choices made at this stage may have a bearing on the

subjects that will be available to you at Salesian Sixth Form College and also guide future

career pathways.

We aim to provide as much flexibility as possible within the Key Stage 4 curriculum. Please

be aware, however, that although we strive to give as many of you the ideal choice of

subjects, in some cases, we will not be able to do so. Classes are limited by considerations

such as room size (or the demand for specialist rooms) and staffing availability. This is the

case in all schools. The information, and curriculum offering, is correct at the time of

publication, yet may face change due to the aforementioned considerations. The final

curriculum structure will be based on your choices and, although this is a complicated

process, we are confident that as many of you will follow a programme of study that is

appropriate to you and gives you the opportunity to access the next stage of your

education.

We hope that you find the provided resources helpful. I would encourage that you (and

your parent/guardian) read (and watch!) all information carefully and raise any questions,

worries, or concerns with the appropriate Head of Department or member of the pastoral

team.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum- General Information. All students study the following subjects as part of the core Curriculum:

• English- Language and Literature • Mathematics • Science (Double or Triple) - Triple Science is delivered as part of the Core

Curriculum to current Year 9 set 1 and set 2. • Religious Education • Physical Education- All students will have access to 4 lessons over 2 weeks. They

will continue to build on existing knowledge, develop new skills and understanding and progress strategy and tactics within game situations with a view to maintaining a healthy attitude to physical activity for a lifetime.

• PSHE- 1 lesson over 2 weeks. Every student will then choose 4 options. Further information about this process is found in the booklet. From these 4 options 3 will be allocated. These 3 options will then be studied at Key Stage 4. For some option subjects (due to the nature of the subject), certain criteria are required to be fulfilled. For some option subjects, the type of course to be studied will be allocated by the Head of Department. This can be done on the basis of prior criteria, or knowledge of the individual student. You should read, and watch, all supplementary information carefully to ensure that you are fully aware of all requirements and possible routes of study in each subject. We cannot guarantee that all choices made will be possible to study. This is due to staffing, required class sizes and timetabling restrictions. If impacted, you will be contacted directly by your Head of Year. If required, you might be contacted regarding your option choices if further discussion is deemed necessary. For further questions, please read carefully the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ document on the Options Portal.

ENGLISH- Language and

Literature

What exam board will I study with?

AQA How will I be assessed? At the end of Year 11, you will be awarded 2 separate GCSE Qualifications in English. These qualifications are English Language and English Literature. At the end of Year 11 you will be assessed in the following way (all exams are written papers, unless noted): English Language

Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing- 50%

Writer’s Viewpoints and Perspectives- 50% English Literature

Shakespeare and Nineteenth Century Novel- 40%

Modern texts and poetry- 60%. Non Examined Unit- Presentation and response

You will also deliver a presentation in a formal context and respond to questions and feedback. This does not contribute to the final grade, but appears as an endorsement on your certificate.

What skills will I develop?

Interpretative skills by exploring a range of texts from a variety of contexts and genres.

Developing a critical approach to literature.

Development of an understanding of key literary and linguistic concepts and terminology.

How to analyse a variety of texts, including prose, fiction and non-fiction.

Promoting your point of view and listening to the views of others.

Understanding the social and historical background to poems and novels.

Analytical essay writing.

How might English contribute towards my future studies and a career?

A Grade 5 in English is currently required for entry to Salesian Sixth Form College.

A specific English grade is required for studying some subjects at Salesian Sixth Form College. For example, Grade 6+ is required to study subjects such as English Language, English Literature and also further subjects such as Biology.

Careers such as journalism and sports journalism, advertising, law and teaching may expect a specific level of qualification in English.

Should I be aware of anything else relating to studying English at Key Stage 4?

You will receive 10 English lessons across each 2 week cycle (5 English Language, 5 English Literature).

English exams are not ‘tiered’. All students studying English take the same paper.

You receive separate English Language and Literature lessons.

You will be taught in ‘sets’. These ‘sets’ remain fluid across the course of your study.

You may also have separate teachers for each discipline of Language and Literature.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded 1 GCSE in Maths. At the end of Year 11 you will be entered for either ‘Higher’ or ‘Foundation’ tier Maths. In the ‘Higher’ tier paper you can be graded 4-9. In the ‘Foundation’ tier paper you can be graded 1-5. Both ‘Higher’ and ‘Foundation’ tiers are examined via the same length and style of exam. However, questions in each paper will differ. At the end of Year 11 you will sit 3 papers in the following format:

In the ‘Higher’ tier paper you can be graded from ‘9-9’ to ‘4-4’. In the ‘Foundation’ tier paper you can be graded ‘5-5’ to ‘1-1’. Both ‘Higher’ and ‘Foundation’ tiers in Double Science are examined via the same length and style of exam. However, questions in each paper will differ. At the end of Year 11 you will sit 6 papers in the following format:

You will need to achieve at least a ‘6-6’ to study Science at A-Level.

Careers such as Pharmaceuticals, Aeronautics, Ecology, Forensic Science, Meteorology, Finance, Engineering and Microbiologist and Medicine may require a specific grade to have been achieved in Double Science.

Science ‘Triple’

If you wish to be considered for Triple Science, you must discuss this with your

science teacher to see if this is the right science course for you. Your teacher will look

at both your academic performance and attitude to learning over the past three years

to see if Triple Science is suitable for you. As this course is very demanding, you

should be consistently achieving top grades in your year 9 exams and end-of-topic

tests in Science.

Year 10

You will study all the combined science topics described on page 9. However, these

topics are extended and studied in more depth. Also more complex subject content

is introduced, such as spectroscopic methods, and natural and synthetic polymers.

Year 11

You will study all the combined science topics described on page 9. Again,

these topics are extended and studied in more depth. As part of the course,

additional topics and content will be introduced such as nuclear fission and

fusion, space physics, and plant biology and disease.

Examinations

Triple science is a completely linear course: students sit all exams at the end of the course. There is no controlled

assessment for this course; it is assessed by written exam only.

At the end of Year 11 you will sit a total of 6 exams: 2 each for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each paper is 1¾ hours

long. The exams will consist of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response style questions. At the

end of the course, students will achieve three separate GCSE qualifications in science, one for each subject.

During the course, you will carry out 8 required practical activities for each of the science disciplines. The techniques and skills acquired during these practical sessions will be assessed in the written exam papers.

What’s next?

A study of the sciences can lead to careers in Pharmaceuticals, Aeronautics, Ecology, Forensic Science, Meteorology,

Finance, Engineering and Microbiologist.

In the Sixth Form science is divided into three separate disciplines. Students who wish to pursue a career in the sciences (and therefore study one or more science A-level) must have studied Combined Science or Triple Science (the latter is not an essential requirement for studying any of the A Level sciences).

Should I be aware of anything else relating to studying Double Science at Key Stage 4?

You will receive 12 Science lessons across each 2 week cycle. This is for each Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics).

You will study each Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) with a different Science teacher.

Tiers of entry for Science remain fluid throughout the course of your study.

A final decision on tiers of entry will not be made until after the Year 11 mock exams.

A professional (and well-informed) judgement will be made by your teacher regarding the final tier of entry. The focus for this decision will be ensuring that you are in the best possible position to achieve an outstanding grade.

SCIENCE- Triple

What exam board will I study with?

Edexcel

How will I be assessed?

At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded with the equivalent of 3 GCSEs in Science. You will be awarded each Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) as a separate GCSE. At the end of Year 11 you will be entered for either ‘Higher’ or ‘Foundation’ tier for each separate Science. In the ‘Higher’ tier paper you can be graded from ‘4-9’. In the ‘Foundation’ tier paper you can be graded ‘1-5’. Both ‘Higher’ and ‘Foundation’ tiers in Triple Science are examined via the same length and style of exam. However, questions in each paper will differ. At the end of Year 11 you will sit 6 papers in the following format:

SCIENCE- Triple Should I be aware of anything else relating to studying Double Science at Key Stage 4?

Current Year 9 Set 1 and Set 2 will study Triple Science. Please refer to the ‘Year 9- F.A.Q.’ document for more information regarding this.

You DO NOT have to study Triple Science to take A-Level Science. Neither do you have to study Triple Science to study Medicine at University. The most important factor with any desired future career paths or study is the achievement of an outstanding grade.

At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded with 1 GCSE in Religious Education. At the end of Year 11 all individuals will sit 2 Religious Education exams. The Religious Education paper is not tiered. The Religious Education paper is graded from ‘1-9’. You will sit the following papers from the Religious Education ‘B’ (Catholic Christianity) specification:

Catholic Christianity- Paper 1- 50%

Perspectives on Faith (Theme A, Theme B and Judaism)- Paper 2- 50%

What skills will I develop?

Knowledge and understanding of different religious and ethical arguments and the impact and influence in the modern world.

Application of teachings from religious beliefs and specific references to sources of wisdom and authority including scripture and Church teaching.

How specific religious beliefs influence Catholics today.

Studying of modern moral issues such as abortion and euthanasia as well as forms of expression including: music, artwork, and films.

Perspectives on faith from a world religion- Judaism.

How might Religious Education contribute towards my future studies and a career?

Religious studies provides a firm foundation for any career that involves engaging an ability to think through issues and reach conclusions. Many journalists, lawyers and teachers may have a qualification in RE.

You can continue to study RE in the Sixth Form, through Philosophy and Ethics A Level.

Everyone will continue studying RE in Sixth Form. This study in non-examined, however it is compulsory for all Sixth Form students.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded with 1 GCSE in Fine Art. Throughout the course you will build a portfolio of work, and also sit a final exam. The Fine Art exam is not tiered. Your Fine Art qualification will be graded from ‘1-9’. You will be assessed in the following way:

Unit 1- Portfolio of Work- A portfolio is selected from work undertaken during the course and must include more than one project. The work is set and marked by your teachers, and moderated by the exam board- 60%

Unit 2- Externally Set Task- Question papers are issued by the exam board from 1st January in Year 11. Preparation time is unlimited, then you have 10 hours of sustained focused study to respond to your chosen starting point and complete a piece of work. The work is marked by your teachers and moderated by the exam board- 40%

What skills and knowledge will I develop?

Creativity. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to express your thoughts, ideas and artistic vision in a variety of different ways.

Independence. You will be required to work independently, working with your teacher to develop ideas and concepts for your portfolio.

Organisation and planning. You will learn how to be organised and be able to work towards deadlines.

How to express yourself in a range of artistic ways. You will have an opportunity to consider a variety of different artists and learn a range of new artistic styles and techniques.

How might Art contribute towards my future studies and a career?

Art can contribute to a range of careers including Theatre and Prop Design, Illustration, Architecture, Graphic Design, Beauty Therapy and make up, Florist, Fashion, Advertising, Sign Writing, Web Design, Page Design and Publishing, Editorial work and work throughout the creative world.

At Salesian we also offer A Levels in both Fine Art and Photography and many students go on to study creative subjects at Art Schools and Universities.

Should I be aware of anything else relating to studying Art at Key Stage 4?

As an ‘Option subject’, you will receive 6 lessons of Art per fortnight.

To ensure the very best possible grade, the Fine Art GCSE requires commitment outside of lessons. You will work with your teacher closely to ensure that you manage your portfolio and meet deadlines.

You cannot take both ‘Fine Art’ and ‘Photography’.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded 1 GCSE in Business. Throughout the course you will work towards completing 2 exams at the end of Year 11. The Business GCSE exam is not tiered. Your Business qualification will be graded from ‘1-9’. You will be assessed in the following way:

Paper 1- Written Exam- Investigating a Small Business- 50%

Paper 2- Written Exam- Investigating Business- 50%

What skills and knowledge will I develop?

Business analysis and calculation skills. You will consider how to analyse a Business. You will learn formula needed to calculate outcomes such as profit, loss, tax, revenue, cost, income and expenditure.

Extended writing and Comprehension skills. You will be required to read and analyse information about a variety of different Businesses. You will then analyse and evaluate this information. You will then learn how to write extended responses, using key calculations and formula to support your answer.

The theory of Business methodology. You will examine the methods and theory used by business owners to grow their businesses, the marketing and financial decisions that they must make, and how they try to best use staff. You will then analyse and evaluate this information. You will then learn how to write extended responses, using key calculations and formula to support your answer.

How might Business contribute towards my future studies and a career?

Business GCSE can help you understand the basic methodology, theory and principles used to run a Business.

Business GCSE can help you understand a variety of different economic challenges which are present for Businesses today.

Should I be aware of anything else relating to studying Business at Key Stage 4?

Due to the nature of the Business GCSE and BTEC course (and timetabling requirements) the school has the following procedures in place relating to the allocation of the Business GCSE and Business BTEC as option choices.

At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded 1 BTEC Award in Business and Enterprise. Throughout the course you will work towards completing 2 portfolios of individual study (Component 1 and 2) and a 2 hour written exam (Component 3). The Business BTEC course/exam is not tiered. Your Business qualification will be graded from ‘Distinction*-Pass’. You will be assessed in the following way:

Component 1- ‘Internal Assessment’- You will examine the nature of different enterprises. You will also reflect upon the skills of an entrepreneur. You will complete a portfolio of work based around these concepts. This work will be graded by your teacher and moderated externally. - 30%

Component 2- ‘Internal Assessment’- You will plan and prepare a ‘micro-

enterprise’ activity. You will develop, plan, research and present a ‘micro-

Practical application of computer skills. Creative i-Media is a ‘practical’ course. You will use computer programmes to complete a variety of different projects.

Knowledge of how a variety of different computer programs can be used to build websites and animations. Throughout the course you will develop a multi-page website for a specific task. You will also design and create a digital animation for a specific purpose.

Independence. You will be required to work independently, working with your teacher to develop the knowledge and ideas required for your portfolio of work.

Organisation and planning. You will learn how to be organised and be able to work towards deadlines.

How might Creative i-Media contribute towards my future studies and a career?

There are a wide range of careers requiring ICT and Media skills in our modern economy. You could use this GCSE as an introduction in to considering a future

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

What exam board will I study with?

Edexcel How will I be assessed? We offer Modern Foreign Languages in French, Spanish and Italian. At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded 1 GCSE in your chosen Language. Throughout the course you will work towards completing exams which test a variety of ‘Language Skills’. These skills are ‘reading’, ‘listening’, ‘writing’ and ‘speaking’. The Modern Foreign Language exam is tiered. In the ‘Higher’ tier paper you can be graded from ‘4-9’. In the ‘Foundation’ tier paper you can be graded ‘1-5’. Both ‘Higher’ and ‘Foundation’ tiers in Modern Foreign Languages are examined via a slightly different length and style of exam. However, you will still be assessed in same skills (with the same exam weighting):

What skills and knowledge will I develop?

The knowledge and skill of reading and writing in a modern foreign language: As part of the reading paper, you will be assessed on your knowledge of your chosen language across a range of different types of texts. This includes ‘advertisements’; ‘emails’, ‘letters’, ‘articles’ and ‘literary texts’. When preparing for a written assessment, you will develop mental agility as this involves being able to use past, present and future tense structures within a variety of topic areas.

Understanding how to speak and listen in a Modern Foreign Language: You will improve your ability to understand native and authentic conversations in your chosen language, and be assessed on this skill in a listening paper.

Global Citizen: Learning a Modern Foreign Language will give you the confidence (and ability) to converse and understand with people from a wide variety of cultures.

What exam board will I study with?

Eduqas How will I be assessed? At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded 1 GCSE in Music. Throughout the course you will work towards completing 1 written exam at the end of Year 11. You will also complete 2 ‘Non-Examined Assessments’ throughout the course. The Music GCSE exam is not tiered. Your Music qualification will be graded from ‘1-9’. You will be assessed in the following way:

Component 1- ‘Performance and Non-Examined Assessment’- This element of the course will include two of your own compositions. You will finalise and submit these in Year 11. You will also perform both a solo piece and an ensemble piece on your chosen instrument or voice. - 60%

Component 2- Written Paper- The written exam paper is in two sections. Half will be based on pieces that you have studied in class and the other half will be listening to brand new music and answering questions on it.- 40%

What skills and knowledge will I develop?

You will develop your listening skills by studying a wide range of music including Romantic and Baroque, as well as popular music, jazz and music from around the world.

You will develop skills to compose two pieces of controlled coursework in any style, most likely using computer software such as Sibelius or Cubase.

You will also develop your performance skills by preparing a solo and an ensemble piece which will be recorded in Year 11.

How might studying Music contribute towards my future studies and a career?

At the end of Year 11 you will be awarded 1 Cambridge National Award (Level 2) in Physical Education. Throughout the course you will work towards completing 3 portfolios of individual study and a written exam. The Cambridge National Award (Level 2) in Physical Education is not tiered. Your Cambridge National Award (Level 2) in Physical Education qualification will be graded from ‘Distinction*-Pass’. You will be assessed in the following way:

Component 1- Internal Assessment- You will consider skills, techniques and use of tactics and strategical ideas in both an individual and a team sporting activity, as well as an understanding of the rules. You will then undertake several officiating roles within an activity. – 25%

Component 2- Internal Assessment- You will develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills required to be an effective sport leader and plan, deliver and review safe and effective sporting activity sessions. – 25%

Component 3- Internal Assessment- You will identify several careers within the sports industry, how to gain access to these, the wider context of the role they play and the development paths within them. – 25%

Component 4- Written Exam- You will explore a range of topical and contemporary issues in sport, relating to participation levels and barriers. You will consider the promotion of sporting values, what constitutes ethical/unethical behaviour (e.g. - performance enhancing drugs), the role of major sporting events such as the Olympics and how governing bodies advance sports’ attempts to positively impact society. – 25%

You will develop a knowledge and understanding of the human anatomy and how sports performance can be improved, via a number of physical and mental strategies.

You will develop an understanding of the broad variety of concepts which inform all aspects of Physical Education. This can include issues such as ‘socio-economic factors’ in participation.

You will develop your practical skills. This includes 3 sporting activities to a high level of technical ability.

You will develop your practical ability in specific sports. This will include individual, team and a free choice from a variety of different sports. Your practical activity will be graded and externally moderated.

Studying Physical Education continues to promote a healthy lifestyle. It can further inform decisions that you make to live a healthy life.

You must be actively involved in at least 1 sport outside of school. This sport must be exam board approved. Furthermore, you must have access to coaching for skill development and also access to competition.

MAKING MY OPTION CHOICES

When can I make my Option Choices? You will be sent a link to a ‘Microsoft Form’ AFTER Options Evening. The time leading up to options evening is an opportunity for you to put yourself in the best position to make a well-informed choice. You will then have to submit your choices by 17.03.2021. Confirmation of option choices will be via letters sent AFTER the Easter Holiday (W/B-26.04.2021). How should I make my Option Choices? You should carefully consider the information which has been made available to you, and the discussions which you have had with teachers. You should reflect on questions such as:

- Should I be doing the Ebacc? - Have I read all entry requirements for each course? - Have I made my choices for the right reason?

Will I be guaranteed all my Option Choices? No. In all circumstances we will do our very best to fulfil the request made.
