RESTON, Va. - September 29, 2017 - NPES President Thayer Long commends the GOP tax reform framework announced by President Donald J. Trump and House and Senate leaders as a solidstarting point, which provides full and immediateexpensing of capital investment, including for newcutting-edge printing, publishing, converting andmailing technology. “This framework’s focus oneconomic growth and jobs, along with its inclusionof full and immediate expensing, reflects one ofNPES’ top government affairs priorities, for whichthe Association has advocated for many years,” saidLong. “Full and immediate expensing is the single-most powerful pro-growth, job-producing provision inthe entire framework.” But Long cautioned, “as withall legislation, details matter, so NPES will closelymonitor the legislative process, provide more analysisas specific information emerges, and weigh-in whereneeded.”

Additionally, NPES Vice President, Government Affairs Mark J. Nuzzaco stated that, “NPES member company executives and their employees should be prepared to advocate directly with their members of congress when the time is ripe.”

Summarized, the GOP tax reform framework includes the following business-related provisions supported by NPES:

Full and Immediate Expensing of Capital Investment: The single-most powerful pro-growth, job-producing element of the proposal, full and immediate expensing, could grow the long-run size of the U.S. economy by 4.2 percent, which would lead to 3.6 percent higher wages and over 800,000 full-time jobs – The Tax Foundation – part of which would result from increasedinvestment in printing, publishing, converting andmailing technology.

Lower Corporate Tax Rates, Including Pass-Through Entities: Provides a top corporate rate of 20%, and 25% for pass-through entities, which

comprise the majority of smaller businesses and are the source of many jobs, including those in the printing, publishing, converting and mailing industries.

Repeal of the Estate Tax: Provides for the preservation, continuity, and economic feasibility of transferring family-owned businesses from one generation to the next, and

Retention of the Research & Development Tax Credit: Providing for the retention of the R&D tax credit that facilitates technological innovation and the new jobs that flow from it.

Despite the overall increase in construction spending, the figure has seen steady declines for much of the past year. (U.S. construction spending in trillions of dollars, seasonally adjusted, revised figures) Credit: Mary Tyler March/Construction Dive, data from Commerce Department

Taking the time out of your days to attend sessions where we have the ability to learn and collaborate will become increasingly important as this disruption continues to explode. LEARN, EDUCATE, EMBRACE CHANGE, and PARTICIPATE!

Thank you to everyone for attending and a SPECIAL THANK YOU to those that participated in the Educational Sessions - Mark Luncsford, Bruce Franz, Bryan Franz, Andrew Heslinga, Greg Howard, Aric Manion, Mark Kadonoff, Steve Coyle, Bob Christensen, and Steve Mueller. Also, to the RSA office who despite last minute changes and upsets always manage to keep us organized!

New Wide-Format Systems from the SGIA ExpoThe Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans was packed with wide-format and specialty printing equipment during the SGIA Expo. Here are some of the wide-format systems we checked out.

UVgel Ink Technology

Canon U.S.A. showcased the 64˝ Océ Colorado 1640 roll-to-roll printer. Its UVgel ink instantly gels on contact with media, resulting in precise dot gain and positional control, perfectly repeatable images and instantly cured, durable prints. aThe Colorado 1640 boasts a top speed of 1,710 sq. ft./hr. and delivers high-quality, POP prints at 430 sq. ft./hr., faster than other competing systems. It features a heavy-duty drawer mechanism that holds up to two rolls of media at one time, each weighing up to 110 lbs.

LED Flatbed Printer

The new EFI Pro 24f LED flatbed printer made its worldwide debut at SGIA Expo. The 4x8-foot printer contains powerful features with LED inkjet imaging, variable drop grayscale head technology in a true flatbed design with moving gantry and multi-zoned vacuum table. The new dedicated flatbed printer gives users powerful results with outstanding image quality at production speeds, a broad color gamut, optimized ink usage and access to more profitable jobs.

Automatic X/Y Cutter

COLEX featured the new Fotoba 126˝-wide XLD 320 X/Y super-wide roll cutter. It is capable of cutting flexible media up to 126˝ wide and 40-mils thick along with a range of textile/fabric material. It uses Fotoba cutmarks to follow the edge of the image, regardless of any feed misalignment. An optional motorized roll feeder is available that can hold rolls up to 660 lbs.

Cut-and-Print Devices

The UCJV Series UV-LED cut-and-print devices from MimakiUSA are 64˝ UV printers offering in-line cutting capability and featuring white ink to enable four-layer printing. Two models are available: the four-color UCJV150-160, and the UCJV300-160 that can accommodate up to seven ink colors. UV-LED curing enables printers to utilize an expanded range of media including many thin film substrates that may be too sensitive for latex or solvent high heat fixation systems. Four-layer printing available on the UCJV300-160 model offers an enhanced print capability that allows designers to build layered, transformative graphics for backlit applications.

Flatbed or Roll-Fed

FUJIFILM North America, Graphic Systems Division debuted the Inca SpyderX, a flexible and powerful flatbed and roll-to-roll UV inkjet press. Using the Fujifilm Uvijet XS ink system developed specifically for the SpyderX, it delivers high-speed production up to 2,476 sq. ft./hr. with pinpoint accuracy. Designed and manufactured by Inca Digital, the SpyderX platform incorporates FUJIFILM Dimatix printheads and Fujifilm Uvijet ink. The 126˝ wide, six-color plus white SpyderX is available as either a flatbed or a combination flatbed/roll-fed model, for handling rigid and flexible substrates.

Dye-Sublimation Printer

Epson showcased its new SureColor F9370 dye-sublimation printer. This 64˝ production printer boasts speeds up to 1,169 sq. ft./hr.. Ideal for high-speed, economical, medium- to large-volume dye-sublimation transfer printing, the SC-F9370 features an integrated new fabric wiping system and advanced roll-to-roll media support system to accommodate a greater variety of transfer papers. The SureColor F9370 leverages dual PrecisionCore TFP printheads and Epson UltraChrome DS with High-Density Black ink to produce output with exceptional color saturation and extremely high contract ratio for a range of textile and apparel applications.

Low-Maintenance Reliability

Ricoh unveiled the Ricoh Pro T7210, designed to bring low-maintenance reliability and ease of use to the decorative printing market. It can handle diverse materials of varied thicknesses, supporting substrates up to 4.3˝ thick with a print size of 6.9x10.5 ft., which lets users print on one 4x8-ft. board or a variety of pre-cut pieces. Using Ricoh’s high-viscosity UV ink and patented piezoelectric printheads, the Ricoh Pro T7210 prints at speeds of 538.2 sq. ft./hr. A media gap adjustment sensor automatically measures substrate thickness and adjusts printheads accordingly, making it easy to switch between different substrate thicknesses and produce reliably accurate prints on the first try.

Exceptional Printing, Accurate Cutting

Roland’s most advanced wide-format printer/cutters ever, the TrueVIS VG models, combine innovative technology with performance, precision and efficiency. Both the VG-640 and VG-540 incorporate four FlexFire print heads, which deliver droplets in three sizes and a 25% wider print swath than Roland’s previous inkjets. The combination with Roland’s specially formulated, cost-effective TrueVIS INK ensures exceptional results at print speeds of up to 374.6 sq. ft./hr. Accurate, reliable integrated contour cutting further enhances productivity and versatility. Additional features include a choice of seven- or eight-color ink configurations, a convenient Bluetooth-enabled Roland DG Mobile Panel and powerful VersaWorks Dual RIP software.

B.L. Makepeace Acquired by Archimedia Solutions Group

Mark DiPasquale, Paul Hallisey, and Jane Simmons

Archimedia Solutions Group has acquired B.L. Makepeace, Inc., a highly respectedand venerable supplier of engineering, construction and surveying supplies for morethan 120 years. Terms of the transaction werenot disclosed.

With both companies serving the same marketplace, the acquisition allows Archimedia to apply its progressive, solution-driven model to a much broader client base and create a greater level of responsiveness and service across the spectrum of equipment and supply sourcing, maintenance and service, administration and advisory services associated with modern print technology.

Archimedia was formed in 2006 and offers on-site print management including cost recovery solutions, technical support, and exceptional customer service. While Makepeace has seen, and adapted to, many industry transformations over the past century, the company today is a supplier of engineering, construction and surveying supplies from Oce, Canon, HP, Topcon, Seco and more.

“Based on the similarity of our missions and the amazing legacy Makepeace has forged since 1895, we’re both humbled and honored to bring our two companies together for continued success serving the architectural, construction, engineering and surveying markets,” said Mark DiPasquale, co-founder of Archimedia. “Our traits are nearly identical from high levels of service and responsiveness to the implementation of solution-driven innovations,

Archimedia is extremely proud to be the caretakers of the Makepeace legacy, its goodwill and the relationships it has built for more than a century.”

“Since the World War II era, Makepeace has grown under its current owners and I am personally grateful to every employee – present and past – who has contributed to our success,” said Paul Hallisey, president of B.L. Makepeace. “Today is not the end of their efforts. Instead, we see this as a new beginning with an even more successful future and we’ve entrusted Archimedia with our company’s heritage because of the cultural fit we see between the two companies and the services we will offer for generations to come.”

“We have experienced a decade of rapid and continual growth in markets across the U.S. and already seen massive consolidation within the vertical,” said Jane Simmons, co-founder of Archimedia. “When we were founded 11 years ago, traditional copy centers were still very much a part of the marketplace. However, our business model proved to outpace brick and mortar service providers and now – by combing our two companies’ best practices – we have an amazing opportunity to provide our new client base with significant benefits by applying a level of responsive and flexible customer service by establishing greater control over technology and ongoing support while also having access to the industries’ best supplies.”

Today’s acquisition will create a combined professional services team of more than 60 employees operating in 28 states with a current primary service area of suburban and metropolitan Boston, Hartford and Rhode Island.

About Archimedia

Lynn Imaging of Lexington, Kentucky was named Partner of the Year and HP was named Vendor of the Year at the ReproMAX Fall Conference held in New Orleans, Louisiana October 11-13, 2017. Each award was voted on by over 150 ReproMAX Partner companies who are considered to be the industry’s largest and most progressive wide format print service providers. Each company faced significant competition in both the vendor and Partner award sectors. The recipient is chosen via a ReproMAX Partner company vote.

Each year, the Partner of the Year award is presented to a leading ReproMAX Partner that actively participates with and contributes to ReproMAX, demonstrates technical and process innovation/adaptation and employs generosity towards company employees, customers, community, and the industry. According to Mike Carter, President of Lynn Imaging, “ReproMAX consists of firms that are leaders in our industry. Winning this award by a vote of those fellow ReproMAX partners is a tremendous honor. All of the Lynn Imaging and Monster Color family are very proud and grateful to be named Partner of the Year.”

“The RSA staff works hard on behalf of its members and appreciates all of you. If you are struggling with rebate processing, equipment pricing, vendor issues etc., please lean on us because we are stress tested and ready to help”

Well it’s early November and we have already had a snowstorm in Denver. Remember my point a few newsletters ago about the need to be prepared as you leave one season for another? The last I left you, I was heading off for vacation to the Florida Keys, but it seems a feisty storm named Irma had other plans for our family. So, a week in the mountains was the compromise and I traded flipflops for hiking boots. I still accomplished my mission of getting some much-needed relaxation.

I can report, on a personal level, that our daughter who lives in south Florida survived the storm without damage and all our RSA member companies in Florida and their employees came through without harm as well.

Upon returning from vacation I found the RSA office was full bore ahead in planning and organizing the fall shareholders meeting that was only 3 weeks away in addition to preparing for our last Gateway tradeshow in Seattle. Oh! There was the Inspire technology conference by Synnex the week before our shareholder meeting that I committed myself to attending. To add some last-minute stress there was a guy named Nate who threatened to storm on and cancel our meeting in New Orleans. Leaning on a sports analogy again, those three weeks reminded me of the 6v3 soccer drills I practiced over and over all through my HS and College Careers. Being a defender, you were always part of the three inside the circle trying to win the ball from the 6 whose job it was to possess and keep you chasing it. Despite the unfair odds, you quickly learned how to work with your 2 other teammates to develop a strategy to win possession of the ball. You also found out how your team of 3 responds to stress.

As a team do you cooperate, cover space, take a position you’re not familiar with to accomplish your goal? Or do you sit back cover your own position and hope the other two guys do the same?

KEVIN’S CORNER

Kevin Howes, Executive

Director

Well I am happy to say that my RSA teammates showed themselves to be the former and not the latter under the duress their Executive Director subjected them to. I would like to personally thank Kellie, Rebecca, Tyler, Celeste, and Dan for their teamwork in helping us pull off a successful tradeshow, vendor conference for me and fall shareholders meeting in a very compressed time period. I know I don’t have to say it, but I will just the same. The RSA staff works hard on behalf of its members and appreciates all of you. If you are struggling with rebate processing, equipment pricing, vendor issues etc., please lean on us because we are stress tested and ready to help.

Until next month, remember “a successful team beats with one heart.”

SGIA TradeshowOn Thursday, RSA members joined thousands of other industry professionals exploring the SGIA tradeshow looking at the latest technology, equipment, supplies, software and applications in the Wide-Format Display Graphics Industry.

Young ProfessionalsThe Young Professionals Event was held on Thursday afternoon. The YP group has become a

staple of the RSA semi-annual meetings and this session was particularly exciting. Mikel Monsen led an open discussion about StrengthsFinder 2.0, which has been adopted by many within the RSA as a methodology of developing our strengths rather than trying to overcome our weaknesses, which in turn helps us move in a direction that is strategically relevant to the overall growth and success of the business.

Interested in how StrengthsFinder 2.0 can benefit you and your employees? Please visit the website at: https://www.gallupstrengthscenter.com/home/en-us/strengthsfinder

Vendor Reception. The Vendor Reception is always a highlight of any RSA meeting and for good reason. It is one of the times where the RSA collective gets direct facetime with our many preferred vendors. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet up with many of our friends and colleagues that we don’t get to see very often. The open flow of conversation is one that we will keep going for years to come.

Business MeetingThe business meeting was excellent, and the board members did a resounding job presenting their committee reports. The highlight, however, was the discussion related to the dues increase. The process was calm and orderly, and everyone who wanted to be heard was. The vote has yet to be certified, but once it is we will ensure that you are made aware of the outcome of this very important vote.

New Board MembersSy Hussaini of Source Graphics rotated off the board in his position of Products and Services chairperson and Bob Christensen of AXSA Imaging took his role and will serve in that capacity for the next two years. Bruce Franz moved from his role in Marketing and National Sales to executive board rotation and will serve as secretary for the next year and chair the communication committee. Stephanie Justice, Bay Area Printing and Graphic Solutions, will now move into the Marketing and National Sales position and will hold that role for the next two years. A special thank you to Michael Shaw who has rotated off the board after serving the executive board for the past four years.

Regardless of distributor, the RSA office administers the rebate process for you.

Are you Canon Service Authorized? If so there’s even better news as you can receive Customer Satisfaction and Pro-Series VAR+ monies upfront and not have to wait 6 weeks until your paperwork is processed. Even if you are not Canon Service Authorized, you are eligible for the iPF Printer Rebate and once again the RSA office administers this process for you, so your reps can spend their time selling and not chasing paperwork.

Benefits of being an RSA Shareholder! Read on...

DID YOU KNOW?

As an RSA Shareholder, you receive preferential positioning when selling Canon printers relative to other associations and the rest of the reprographic industry.

The RSA qualifies for Platinum Level Hardware rebates which are

as much as $850 better than Silver Status and up to $500 better than Gold Level. Not many of our members would qualify for Platinum rebates on their own.

As part of the RSA, you also qualify for a quarterly Platinum Level 3 consumable rebate on ink and Printheads. This rebate level is typically reserved for dealers who purchase over $300K in Printheads and inks and over $28K in media based on MSRP. As we have very few members who qualify for these rebates on their own, it means you receive an additional 20% on ink and PH and 7% on media purchases by belonging to the RSA*. For the typical member purchasing an iPF785 MFP, there is an additional $260-$510 of profit versus a similar sized unaffiliated competitor. Sell a 300ml ink set with the printer and there is an additional $127 of profit by being an RSA member. Throw in a Printhead and there is another $90 in the deal for you. Purchase your Ink, Printheads and Media through our Distributor Partner National Azon and you can get these rebates upfront.

Friday Vendor PresentationsCanonIt is always a pleasure to hear from our esteemed friends at Canon. Amit spoke to us about the new image PROGRAF TX Series, designed to meet the needs of customers who have higher productivity needs for their technical documents. Consisting of four new devices (imagePROGRAF TX-3000, TX-3000 MFP T36, TX-4000 and TX-4000 MFP T36), the TX series features major advances to the core technologies of Canon’s imagePROGRAF five-color devices, including a new pigment ink, print head and enhanced security capabilities, as well as a new 36-inch scanner for the MFP models. He also laid out the guidelines for becoming a reseller for this new line of printers which includes mandatory advertising on the Reseller's website. Remember you must complete the TX Training from Canon – if you have not received the instructional email about how to access this training, please contact the RSA Executive office – and you must be willing and able to list the TX product line on your website. The product has launched, and shipping will begin mid-late November.

“Another interesting and educational meeting, looking forward to the next…”

Christian Cummings, Idaho Blueprint

We concluded our business meeting with a panel discussion named: “How I Run My Business,” hosted by Mark Kadonoff, Aric Manion, and Steve Coyle. The session was met with excitement and the open forum allowed for some excellent conversations that many of our members could relate to. One key topic that resonated with everyone in the room was the difficulty in hiring, motivating, and maintaining a sales team in today’s Reprographic environment. The RSA is considering forming a committee to address this topic on behalf of the membership with the goal of adding educational content throughout the year and to our bi-annual meetings. If you have interest in leading or participating in this committee, please contact Kevin at the RSA office.
