1 #ChiZone17 Dear Rotarians and Friends, On behalf of more than 60,000 Rotarians in Zones 28 and 29, we are honored to welcome you to Chicago for ChiZone 2017! We will be celebrating the Past, Present, and Future of Rotary in the Birthplace of Rotary. Our Host Committee has many wonderful events planned for you. We will celebrate the Past with a Rotary History and Heritage Tour, including visits to Room 711 where the first Rotary meeting took place, to the residence of our founder Paul Harris and to his memorial gravesite, to a meeting at the first club, RotaryOne, and of course, a visit to Rotary International. We will also hear some messages from the early days of Rotary, not to mention celebrating the past with a “Roaring 20’s Great Gatsby Party!” We will celebrate the Present with updates on Rotary by our global leaders, and spend time in continuous learning of our best practices presented in informative seminars, including a renewed focus on leadership development. We will have a special presentation by John O’Leary, whose inspirational message will be remembered forever. We will also celebrate the Future with a visit from Rotary International President-Elect Barry Rassin, Rotary Foundation Trustee Sushil Gupta, and we will enjoy a special evening for dinner at the Adler Planetarium, located on Chicago’s lakefront with spectacular views of the skyline, and next to the Rotary Centennial Park. We will host a ground-breaking program for Future Leaders. And finally, we have some surprises planned for you, so enjoy the ChiZone celebration! As Chicago natives, Nancy and I are proud to welcome you to our home. And like Rotary, for more than a century the City of Chicago has been motived by the words of its famous architect, Daniel Burnham, whose transformation of the city was based on the theme of “Make No Little Plans!” So, welcome to the Birthplace of Rotary, where we have been Making A Difference in the world in service to others since 1905. Warmest regards, Robb and Nancy Knuepfer Rotary International Director

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

Welcome to this Rotary Institute. Over the next several days you will have the opportunity to celebrate our successes, expand your network across borders and cultures, and share your ideas for the years ahead. As Rotarians, our commitment to service is what drives us, and we want to be part of something larger than ourselves. This Institute is where we take our passion for community service to the next level, finding inspiration in each other’s accomplishments to bring our service to greater heights.

I hope you take the knowledge gained at this Institute back to your clubs and districts to help them succeed throughout the coming year. Together we will achieve great things through our service in Rotary: Making a Difference.

NICKI SCOTTCHIZONE CHAIR DISTRICT GOVERNOR D6450 2014-15 ROTARY CLUB OF NAPERVILLE SUNRISE, IL USA

Rotary is a way of life for Nicki who consid-ers herself to be a global citizen. The values of Service above Self, internationalism and building understanding between different cultures and religions resonate strongly with Nicki’s own principles. After serving as President of Naperville Sunrise in 2009/10 and Assistant Governor in 2011 she had the honor of serving as District Governor 6450, in 2014-15. In continuation of her work with Rotary Nicki was appointed to a three year term as Rotary Coordinator for Zone 28 beginning July 1, 2016. Most recently, she was invited by President John Germ to serve on Rotary International’s Strategic Planning Committee.

Having experienced first hand in Zambia and India the incredible good that The Rotary Foundation and our EndPolioNow effort does in the world, Nicki is a strong supporter: a founding member of the Paul Harris Society, a Major Donor and member of the Bequest Society.

With a background in corporate finance, strategic planning and change management consulting Nicki then owned a promotional product business for 12 years and developed expertise in branding and entrepreneurship. She recently returned to being a mentor and coach for CEOs and business owners as one of the newest Peer Advisory Group Chairs in the Chicago-land market for Vistage Worldwide. Both Rotary and Vistage are great out-lets for Nicki’s core passions; professional speaking, business coaching and leadership development. She aims to use these skills in service to Rotary International to help to bridge the gap to the next generation of leaders for our second century of service to the world.

Nicki’s son Sam (24) is an industrial designer in Chicago and daugh-ter Chloe (21) is in her senior year at Arizona State University studying Non-Profit Leadership and Sustainability. Both children have been deeply influenced by Rotary ever since they traveled to Zambia with Nicki aged 13 and 11.

We hope you will join us in thanking the staff at the Westin Chicago Northwest for their out-standing hospitality and service. The Westin has always been welcoming and supportive of Rotary events held at their facilities. When RID Robb wanted to bring Zone 2017 to Chicago, it was an easy decision to recom-mend this hotel. Filling an entire hotel with Rotarians creates a very special effect.

We also need to give a special thank you to Audrey Bach, Convention Services Manager, for her assistance. She has definitely gone the “extra mile” in her service.

FALL COLOR - MORTON ARBORETUM

The Morton Arboretum is at 4000 Route 53 in Lisle, about fifteen miles from the Westin in Itasca. Trees. Not a forest of them. Nor a parkway. Or a backyard shelter. But a cathedral. Trees that humble you with their grandeur. Trees that inspire you with their grace. Trees that restore you with their beauty. Trees that take you to a place you’ve never seen before. The mission of The Morton Arboretum is to collect and study trees, shrubs, and other plants from around the world, to display them across naturally beautiful landscapes for people to study and enjoy, and to learn how to grow them in ways that enhance our environment. Their goal is to encour-age the planting and conservation of trees and other plants for a greener, healthier, and more beautiful world. The Arboretum is open 365 days year! The grounds are open from 7:00 to sunset daily. Buildings, exhibits, and facilities have select hours. Because it is an outdoor destination, it occasionally is closed due to extreme weath-er.

When Joy Morton established The Morton Arboretum in 1922, he envisioned a “great outdoor museum” of trees. Today, their living collections inspire visitors to appreciate, learn about, plant, and protect trees. The Arboretum champions the world’s trees through plant collections, science and conservation, education, and

outreach.

The Morton Arboretum’s 1,700 acres hold more than 222,000 live plants representing nearly 4,300 taxa from around the world. Situated on the rolling Valparaiso moraine and bisected by the East Branch of the DuPage River, the Arboretum is planned and planted to nurture and display trees and shrubs in environments conducive to their growth.
