Issue 23 Thursday 3 August 2017 Dear Parents/Carers, Week 3!! It was great to see how busy the Working Bee had been on Sunday! A massive shout to all the families who came and helped to keep our school looking fabulous, especially during the messinessof the build! It was great to hear of students in our Yr 6 group coming along to help and taking pride in their school. BUILDING UPDATE: Im sure you will all agree that Learning Community One (LC1) is really taking shape. Now that the steel is in place it is easy to see how the building is going to shape up! Over the coming two weeks we will start to see the wall framing going up. Some roofing may also start to be added to LC1. Over the coming fortnight the slab for Learning Community Two will be poured. There has been some delay with the pour on slab two as the builders have found they have needed to do quite a lot of blinding to prepare the area. Electrical and plumbing works around the site will connue. Some of the shrubs and small trees found between the main administraon building and the site will be cleared over the coming weeks. These trees and shrubs were marked at planning stage as needing to be removed for the build to progress. Eventually this space will become the Foundaon play area. Meanwhile, work is connuing on the girlstoilets. We have had some ongoing issues with leakage from the portable toilets on the carpark. I have been working closely with Graeme from Bay Builders to ensure the problem does not happen again. Issue 23 Thursday 3 August 2017

Dear Parents/Carers,

Week 3!! It was great to see how busy the Working Bee had been on Sunday! A massive shout to all the families who came and helped to keep our school looking fabulous, especially during the ‘messiness’ of the build! It was great to hear of students in our Yr 6 group coming along to help and taking pride in their school.

BUILDING UPDATE:

I’m sure you will all agree that Learning Community One (LC1) is really taking shape. Electrical and plumbing works around the site will continue. Some of the shrubs and small trees found between the main administration building and the site will be cleared over the coming weeks. These trees and shrubs were marked at planning stage as needing to be removed for the build to progress. Eventually this space will become the Foundation play area. Meanwhile, work is continuing on the girls’ toilets. We have had some ongoing issues with leakage from the portable toilets on the carpark. I have been working closely with Graeme from Bay Builders to ensure the problem does not happen again. PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM:

In the PYP the balance between acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, development of conceptual understanding, demonstration of positive attitudes, and taking of responsible action is referred to as the Five Essential Elements. 1. KNOWLEDGE

Significant, relevant subject matter that we wish students to explore and know about. 2. CONCEPTS

Powerful ideas that have relevance within and across the disciplines and which students must explore and re-explore in order to develop understanding.

3. SKILLS Those things the students need to be able to do to succeed in a challenging world.

4. ATTITUDES Dispositions which are expressions of fundamental values, beliefs, and feeling about learning, the environment, and people.

5. ACTION Demonstrations of deeper learning in responsible behaviour through positive action and service; a manifestation in practice on the other essential elements.

PYP LEARNER PROFILE ATTRIBUTE OF THE FORTNIGHT:

Is your child a THINKER? At Parkhill this is what we believe a THINKER is:

I use critical and creative thinking to solve problems. I think before I act - the actions I take have an impact.

I show honesty and respect when making sensible decisions.

I use my initiative.

GAMES CLUB:

During lunchtime we run a Games Club in the Hall. Children from across the school gather to play board games,

Lego, chess, dominoes, dolls and much more. Recently the children have been learning about how to play string

games. A big thank you to Judy who has been coming into school to help teach the children these games. Playing

board games, card and other games that involve strategy and discussion are so great for a child’s development.

They are fun, engaging and ‘screen free’! Kidspot is a great website full of great ideas – and instructions!

REMINDERS:

Bring It Brekky:

I am excited about our first ‘Bring It Brekky!’ Please come along for a chat and catch-up on Monday 7th August. The breakfast is an opportunity for parents to network, catch up and chat – out of the cold! Please bring along a plate of something you enjoy for breakfast to share with the group. Anyone and everyone is most welcome! Thanks to Suzanne Carmody and Pippa Papageorgiou for organising this.

Louie’s Afternoon Tea:

Thank you to our parent community led by Anny Murray for organising an afternoon tea to say goodbye and best wishes to Louie. Many of you will have known Louie for many years. We were very sad at the end of last term to say goodbye to Louie as a staff. This is now your opportunity to thank him for the years he gave to Parkhill and to say your goodbyes. Please do come along to the staffroom on Thursday 10th August at 2:30pm.

PARKHILL COMMUNITY CROWDFUNDING CALL OUT

We are very keen to hear from anyone in our community who may have an interest in helping us out with this initiative.

With crowdfunding, individuals and organisations raise money for projects by collecting relatively small (or large!) amounts of money from local businesses and the wider community. This approach taps into the collective efforts of a large pool of individuals—primarily online via crowdfunding platforms.

Please contact Vanessa on 0439 356 931 if you can assist or would like more information.

THANK YOU LOUIE!

The PFA would like to show our appreciation for all the assistance and support Louie has given us and our children during his time at Parkhill. Please join us at 2.30pm in the staffroom on Thursday 10th of August.

Louie is really missing the school community so we would love to see as many people attend as possible.

If you are able to bring a plate please email Anny Murray at [email protected]

Hope to see you there!

Parent Opinion Survey 2017

WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK.

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an

annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted with a sample of

randomly selected parents at each school.

It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student

engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help

inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The

survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the

fieldwork period from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August.

Approximately 30% of randomly selected parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All

responses to the survey are anonymous.

The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Survey language guides will be provided in a range of additional languages, but please contact the school should you require any further assistance. The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September, and these results will form part

of our Annual Report.

For further information, please contact the office or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyparent.aspx
