Dear Parents:

The school year is starting wrap up and summer is just around the corner. The scholars have completed ISTEP+ testing for the year, and are now focusing on NWEA testing. We also have a number of other exciting activities coming up. Please keep a look out for information about these wonderful opportunities as

we finish up the school year.

Pike Township takes pride in providing every student with their best possible learning experience. To that end, we maintain elementary class size guidelines per grade level throughout the district. Deer Run Elementary School (DRES) will be sending home a form asking if your child will be returning to DRES for the 2016-

17 school year. This important information allows us to maintain appropriate class sizes as we plan for next school year. Please return this form to your child’s

teacher or the front office no later than Monday, May 23, 2016.

Online registration can be completed starting June 1st. Here is the link to the

May is Better Speech & Hearing Month!

Focus on listening and speaking with your child this month!

*Choose a book that you loved as a child and read it aloud or listen to it on CD with your child. This will help their listening compre-hension. Talk about what is happening in the story using who, what, when , where, and why questions, and discuss the parts that you

both liked the best.

*Play a game where you tell each other silly directions to follow (stick out your tongue, moo like a cow, do a funny dance). Start

with one step, and move up to 3-4 steps.

*Take turns finding an object around the house and saying that word in a complete sentence (“The banana is on top of the refriger-

ator”). Try to put two objects together in the same sentence.

*Have a category scavenger hunt. Have your child run around the house and find five things that are red, five things you wear, five things that make noise, five things that are soft, etc. Then, you can find five related items and have your child figure out what category

they belong to.

BOX TOPS!

It’s easy to help your school earn money for

fun activities, events, & supplies!

Buy your favorite Box Tops Foods!

Cut out the Box Tops from the packages!

Send the Box Tops to school with your child!

We get CASH for every single Box Top that is collected for things we need the most! Our goal this year is $1,500 and we need you to send in those Box Tops for that to

happen! All those Box Tops

really add up!!

The last and final character strength is ZEST. Below is the definition and some of the behaviors attached to the character

strength of ZEST.

Just a reminder, the goal of each of the character strengths is to build these words into the students’ everyday vocabulary. Please continue to use the character strengths of gratitude, grit,

social intelligence, curiosity, and self-control, and opti-

mism this month in your classrooms.

ZEST

Definition: having enthusiasm, excitement, and energy

Behaviors associated with Zest:

• Showing enthusiasm

• Approaching new situations with excitement and energy

Pike High School was once again ranked as one of the most challenging high schools in the nation. This is the fourth consecutive year we have made the list. We are ranked 33rd in the state and 1,789 (up 99 spots

from last year) in the country.

In their first week of participating in the Food Rescue Program, New Augusta Public Academy South set a

food collection record.

The Indianapolis Star honored Eric Bradley (Boys Rugby) and Lynna Irby (Girls Track) on their list of Indi-
