Dear Padre June 21, 2020
Why does the Church oppose stem-cell research, especially when it has the
potential to cure illnesses like Parkinson’s disease?
Stem cells are unspecialized cells with the ability to divide and produce a variety of more specialized cells. Scientists hope that one day they can be coaxed into specific kinds of cells that can cure disease or repair diseased organs. In a 2008 statement, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops said there are two kinds of stem cells. Adult stem cells come from umbilical-cord blood, adult tissue, and placenta that can be obtained with no harm to the donor or ethical problems. Embryonic stem cells, on the other hand, are obtained by destroying embryonic human beings in the first days of development. Since harvesting these cells involves the deliberate killing of humans, obtaining or using this kind of cell is immoral. This is why the Church has opposed extending federally funded stem-cell research beyond currently existing cell lines. Although stem-cell research may hold therapeutic potential, it’s never permissible to sacrifice a person. “The same ethic that justifies taking some lives to help the patient with Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease today can be used to sacrifice that very patient tomorrow, if his or her survival is viewed as disadvantageous to other human beings considered more deserving or productive,” the bishops said. Catholics should support more research on adult stem cells, which show great promise, and resist efforts to expand research using embryonic cells. ~From Sexuality and Morality: Answers for Modern Catholics, © 2014,

St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) is famous as a theologian, reformer of the Carmelite Order, and spiritual advisor to the great Spanish mystic, St. John of the Cross (1542-1591). But Teresa's ministry was not well received in her community. Her sisters had grown lax in Faith and practice, and when she called for reform their response was to throw her out of convents that she herself had established. On one occasion, she was turned out at night in the middle of a rainstorm. Dressed only in her coarse wool habit, she climbed into a donkey cart and was riding along when the wheel of the cart hit a ditch and the cart turned over, dumping Teresa into the mud. She sat there, in mud-soaked wool, looked up to Heaven, and said, "Lord, if this is the way you treat your friends, it's no wonder that you don't have many!" But frustrated as she was, Teresa clung to God. In one of her meditations on the Disciplines of the Holy Spirit, Teresa talks about how we must not be deceived by the appearance that evil triumphs over good. She wrote, "God uses the Devil as a sharpening-stone for Christians." Teresa not only taught this lesson, she lived by it. She never gave up on God, even when her sisters opposed her by going to priests and bishops to make trouble for her. She kept right on teaching what she knew to be the truth. And eventually, she won out. Her desire was to be faithful, and God prospered her efforts. Today, she is known as a Doctor of the Church -- an exemplary teacher and thinker -- while the nuns who treated her so badly remain dead and unknown. And the Carmelite convents of Teresa's reform continue to this very day. Teresa understood what the prophet Jeremiah was talking about in the first reading and what Jesus was teaching in today's Gospel lesson. We must be bold in our prayer of faith, asking God to give us the strength to weather the difficulties of life. In our perseverance we can be an example and help others to seek God’s help and blessing in their lives, too. Be not afraid, God is with us always! Peace,

Question for Prayer this Week
How will I spend some peaceful time with Jesus this week?
Prayer is time to be at peace.
Heart of Jesus, our peace and reconciliation, have mercy on us.
O God, come to my assistance!
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Complete ministry schedules and bulletins are on our website: www.catholic3nd.com. Copies of the
ministry schedule are available at the front of the church starting the 2nd Sunday of the month.
Let us pray that we may grow in the love of God.
Father, guide and protector of Your people, grant us an unfailing respect of Your name, and keep us
always in Your love. Amen.

When did God as “Father” become
common? Jesus called Him Father, but was
that common? Referring to God as “Father” took place in
Old Testament times, but it was rather
unusual prior to the coming of Jesus, who
regularly referred to his heavenly Father,
e.g., John 1:14, 18.
In the Old Testament, God is referred to as
the father of the nation of Israel several
times, (Deut. 32:6, Is. 63:16, Mal. 1:6). He is
also referred to the father of certain people
more than a dozen times, (e.g., 2 Sam.
7:14, Ps. 89:26). And at other times, the im-
agery of “fatherhood” is present even
though the word Father is not used,
(Ex. 4:22-23, Mal. 3:17). In coming to redeem
the world (see John 3:16-17), Jesus invites us
into an intimate relationship with His heav-
enly Father in which we can call Him “Abba”
or “Daddy,” (e.g. Mark 14:36, Rom. 8:15, Gal
4:6)
