2011 Year 12 Results Over the New Year we have received very pleasing news about the achievements of the Year 12 class of 2011. All 21 students graduated with the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE); the Year 12 diploma. Every student achieved a nationally recognised Vocational Education & Training qualification (VET Certificate). Of the nine students who were OP eligible, all achieved an OP within the commendable 1-15 range (from the total range of 1-25). Every student who made application for a Tertiary studies position through QTAC received an offer. These are fantastic results!! Congratulations to all our 2011 graduates on their great achievements. MSB is committed to maximising every student’s outcomes so that they leave school with a qualification valuable to them. Special acknowledgement of the outstanding commitment and professionalism of MSB’s staff who’ve supported, guided, and inspired our students through their achievements!

Building MSB Building works have continued in earnest throughout the holidays. Refurbishment of the MSB Kitchen incorporating Trade Training facilities is complete. The new Library and ICT Learning Centre construction will be finalised by Easter. Bernard’s ground floor residential accommodation refurbishment works will be finished at the end of this month. Finally, the expansion of Morrissey House (girls residence) will be taking place until the end of May. Once these residential works are complete and students have moved into these facilities, former dorms will be converted to teaching spaces, new administration facilities will be provided in the existing Library and staff amenities will be upgraded. MSB has also been successful in an application for a Solar Power generation system. The $50,000 system will be installed on the Science Centre roof (Frayne Block) in the first half of the year. 2012 is shaping up to be the year of delivery! CAUTION: Please take due care in moving about the site with so much construction activity taking place. Over the next few weeks we are looking forward to welcoming the 2012 NET Team to MSB. Meanwhile most of the action will be taking place in the classrooms as our core business of learning, teaching and growing takes highest priority. We will be breaking new ground with fellow schools across the nation as the roll out of the Australian Curriculum gets underway.

God bless us all! Mr Luke Reed MSB College Principal

Last Friday, 3rd February, the College travelled to the Atherton Swimming Pool to fight out who was the best team at swimming. Some amazing feats were achieved with 8, long stand-ing, records broken. The rumour around the College is that the swimming carnival was a fantastic day and fun was had by all. The results speak for themselves. The carnival was a very close run affair with only 17 points separating the top two houses and only 118 points separating all the houses. Well done to all Age Champions for your shining achievements. Huge congratulations must go to the PATRICK’S team as they pulled out everything they had to topple Ber-nards and snatch the lead. The next big sporting event to look forward to is the

Narelle Oliver visits Mount St Bernard College

In December, 2011 award –winning Australian children’s author and artist, Narelle Oliver visited our College to conduct a professional learning workshop linking picture books and the Australian Curriculum.    photo: Alita Stewart, Ravenshoe State School

Ms Oliver’s works include Leaf Tail (1989),High Above the Sea (1991),The Best Beak in Boonaroo Bay (1993),The Hunt (1995),Sand Swimmers (1999),Baby Bilby, Where do you Sleep? (2001),Mermaids Most Amazing (2001),The Very Blue Thingamajig (2003) Dancing the Boom‐cha‐cha Boogie (2005),Home (2006), Twilight Hunt (2007),Fox and Fine Feathers (August, 2009).  Many of these titles have won or been short‐listed for major Australian picture book awards.

(http://www.narelleoliver.com /resources/Publications.pdf )  The hard work and skill involved in creating picture books for all ages was soon apparent. Ms Oliver’s

outstanding artwork and sparse use of text demonstrates the painstaking collaboration of design,

colour, line and language that comes together to promote enjoyment and learning with picture

books.  Her works ignite  the imagination and provide a stunning visual experience that connects

with natural habitats and animal behaviour.

Mrs Weedon (Library) and Ms Martin (Kitchen) took part in this day of art and language. It included

hands‐ on practice in linocut design and printing.  Thanks to Alita Stewart for local co‐ordination of

this informative and worthwhile event.

The program was an initiative of the School Library Association of Queensland (SLAQ Inc) , “a state‐

wide professional association that provides opportunities for its members to connect students and

learning through a variety of literacies, to work collaboratively with educational professionals and

share pedagogical ideas. “ (http://www.slaq.org.au/).

SLAQ’s 2012 conference, ‘Northern Escape – Connect –Create – Challenge’   will be

held in Cairns 3rd to 5th July.  Key note speakers include  Lyn Hay, lecturer with the

School of Information Studies, Charles Sturt University, Jenny Lucca,  Head of

Information Services at Toorak College, Melbourne and Boori Monty Pryor,

Australian Children's Laureate and past guest here at MSB.   Anyone interested in

reading, literacy and great learning is welcome to register to attend the conference. Visit  the SLAQ

website.  Don’t forget to keep abreast of great articles and events in our National Year of Reading.

Family Mobile Phone Rules   Do you wish you had thought to have some rules for mobile phone use in your family? It’s not too late. This is new technology which involves new ways of thinking and dealing with the impacts of its use. Talk with your partner or other care givers about what the rules might be. Then tell your child you have discussed it and here are the new rules. Children and particularly teenagers like to know where the boundaries are. They may still push at them but they actually like to know where both you and they stand on an issue. Make some rules non-negotiable – you won’t change, and some that are open for negotiation if they do the right thing. There are many excellent websites about this topic. A good example of helpful advice can be found at: http://ktrapp.hubpages.com/hub/5-Cell-Phone-Rules-You-Must-Put-in-Place-When-Your-Kids-are-Young Each rule is accompanied by an explanation of why they have chosen it, the best way to carry out the rule and dealing with objections that your child might have against it. Their five basic rules are:

No mobile phones in the bedroom at night. No cell phones in school. No cell phones on family days, family meals or other important family times. No picture mail. Make sure that each cell phone contact is a real friend or family member.

Personally I am not so sure about a blanket ban on picture mail but certainly you need to have a discussion with them about the consequences of “sexting” – sending explicit photos of anyone via email or phone. Other good sites are: http://askmeanmom.blogspot.com.au/2008/02/rules-for-teen-cell-phone-users.html http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/mobile_phones_teenagers.html/context/1110 http://www.parentsareimportant.com/2011/04/four-rules-for-cell-phone-use-by-kids.html http://pediatrics.about.com/od/safety/a/510_parental_controls.htm http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=288&id=2704 If you have any queries about mobile phone use or would like some help putting these rules into place we are always happy to discuss it with you and your child. Maths/Science Tutoring Mathematics & Science tutoring is being offered free to all students of MSB this year and will be held in the school li-brary on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 – 4:30 pm. This is a good opportunity for students to get help with their Maths & Sci-ence on a one-to-one basis or to use the time for completion of homework and/or catch up on missed class work. Mr. Jamieson – HOF Mathematics/Science

Woolworths Earn and Learn bears fruit Thanks to everyone who brought in Woolworths dockets in 2011 for the Woolworths/Modern Teaching Aids Earn & Learn campaign. Our school library was rewarded with a book holder, stationery supplies and some great new books. Below library assistant, Ms Vermaas and Year 11 student, Glen Ningiga (Yr 11) from Port Moresby pose with our prizes.
