Can you sense the changes in the air and smell the spices of warm

pumpkin pie? Yes, that’s right, we are officially into fall! But fall isn’t just about pumpkin pie, Halloween, and turkey carving, it is also a time to give thanks, to reflect on

good memories, and to look forward to the months ahead. In this edition of the “By Your Side” newsletter, we are going to do just that: thanking our dedicated home care and hospice teams in recognition of National Home Care and Hospice Month. We also want to give a big thank you to our many wonderful donors who every year contribute to SVNA so that we can continue our mission of caring for you, your loved ones and all those in our community. So warm up the fire, grab a cup of warm tea, settle into your favorite reading chair and enjoy this edition of “By Your Side.”

Warm regards,

November is National Home Care and Hospice month, a time to recognize the millions of caregivers who make a remarkable difference in the lives of the patients they care for. “This month we honor all the dedicated nurses, therapists, and aides who provide high-quality health care and supportive services in patients’ homes throughout the United States,” Val J. Halamandaris, President of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) remarked. “They make the difference between life and death on a daily basis and are the very personification of ‘caring.’”

During the month of November, SVNA recognizes our dedicated team of nurses, therapists, clinicians, aides, volunteers and office personnel who go the extra mile to make positive impacts on the lives of those who are in our care. “It takes a special person to work in the home healthcare and hospice fields,” says Executive Director, Michele Gorat. “During this special month, we pay tribute to our talented home care and hospice professionals at SVNA who make such a difference in our patient’s lives every day.”

Let’s help make November a special time of celebration to honor home care and hospice workers and volunteers for all they do for patients around the country - thank a caregiver during National Home Care and Hospice Month!

Morgan Lamb, RN Joins SVNA

SVNA welcomes Morgan Lamb, RN to the SVNA team. Morgan comes to us from Sharon, CT and is a graduate from Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vermont.

When we asked Morgan about what prompted her choose a career in nursing this was her response: “From a very young age, I knew I wanted to help people. As I got older and had to make a decision about college, I knew exactly what I wanted to focus on, nursing! I happen to have a long line of nurses in my family, so I was always asking questions and wanted to hear stories about their nursing journeys. As a result, there was never any lack of support as I chose my school and wrestled my way through Nursing School.”

Then we asked Morgan why she chose SVNA and here is her response:“Once I passed my Boards to become a Registered Nurse, I knew I wanted to stay local. I have grown up in Salisbury and I couldn’t think of a better way to put my new skills to use, than to serve the community which has helped shape me into the person I am today. I am so excited to start my own Nursing journey with the SVNA and learn all that I can to become a well-rounded nurse and give back to my community!”

Morgan also had a very good insider’s perspective on SVNA as her mom, Christine Lamb, has worked for us for over 12 years and her grandparents – Wayne and Eleanor Neville - are hospice volunteers and Mrs. Neville is also a registered nurse. So I guess we can say Morgan is carrying on a family tradition!

IT’S NOT TOO LATE!

It’s Flu Season – Influenza, also commonly known as “the flu” is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. During a regular flu season, about 90 percent of deaths occur in people 65 years and older. Flu season in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May.

An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community.

New Intern at SVNA - Sarah ZealorSarah Zealor, a senior at Western Connecticut State University (WSCU) is completing her senior internship at SVNA. Sarah is majoring in social work and has paired up with SVNA’s MSW Virginia Gold. Virginia will be Sarah’s mentor as she completes her internship. We decided to get to know Sarah a little better and thought we would share what we found out:

Question #1: Why did you select SVNA? Answer: The answer surprised us – we were not Sarah’s first choice!? However, Sarah states that if she had to apply again, SVNA would be a first choice stating “I find the work that SVNA does very interesting. The elderly population is one you know and hear about, but don’t really know about.” Sarah was also impressed by the fact that SVNA can handle patients of all ages from babies to the elderly.

Question #2: What made you decide on majoring in social work? Answer: “I always like to help people and I feel I am a good listener. My friends always come to me when they have a problem and I can usually see things from a different perspective so I am able to help them. It really feels good to be able to help people and point them in the right direction.”

Question #3: What do you hope to gain from your internship?Answer: “I hope to gain a better understanding of the elderly population; it’s growing significantly and as a result you will have experiences with elderly individuals so having knowledge to help this population will be very useful.”

Question #4: Where did you grow up and where do you live?Answer: “I grew up in Kent, graduated from HVRHS and still live in Kent. I like the Northwest Corner and that everyone knows each other; it’s a big but little community.”

Based on these answers we think Sarah is going to make a wonderful social worker and we are excited to have her with us at SVNA.

Fall can be a great time to focus on attaining a healthy weight. The cooler temperatures and colorful leaves make our daily walk a little more pleasant. And then there are the looming holidays with their traditional opportunities to overindulge – if we get a head start on our healthy eating plan, we’re more likely to keep it up when Halloween candy, turkey gravy and Christmas candy tempt us.

There are plenty of other reasons to work toward a healthy weight, check out these medically documented benefits:

You’ll lower your risk for many diseases. Obesity increases your risk for numerous diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, certain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease. Losing weight can, in many cases, immediately reduce your risk for these diseases.

You’ll lower your risk of injury. Not only does carrying extra pounds increase your risk of disease, but it also nearly doubles your risk of injury – everything from falling to overexertion.

You’ll save money. If you eat less, you’ll probably spend less on food. That’s the first, most obvious way you save money by dropping a few pant sizes. But it can save you money in numerous other ways. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a person who’s obese has medical costs $1,429 higher per year than someone who maintains a healthy weight.

You’ll sleep better. Obesity raises the risk of sleep disorders, including apnea, one of the most serious. The loss of restful sleep leads to the production of more of a hormone that makes you hungry. The hungrier you are, the more you eat, which, in turn, decreases your chance of having a good night’s sleep – a vicious circle. By losing weight, you’ll sleep better and be less hungry.

You’ll have more energy. Those extra pounds make it harder for your heart to get blood to every part of your body and for your body to move extra pounds from Point A to Point B. Just imagine having to carry a 30-pound sack of flour around all day to understand the effect. Shedding those pounds means your body has to work less hard, freeing up all kinds of energy – to play ball with the grandkids, to exercise more, to do whatever your heart desires!

To help you reach your healthy weight, stay active and reduce your risk of injury join one of SVNA’s Matter of Balance Classes. Classes are FREE and located at various community locations – check out our calendar at www.salisburyvna.org or call us at 860-435-0816 to find a class near you. Source: IlluminAge AgeWise

Charitable Bequests & SVNA A charitable bequest is one of the simplest ways that you can make a significant contribution to SVNA. It might surprise you to learn that you don’t have to be wealthy to make a real difference. In fact, most charitable bequests come from middle-class households.

Your bequest will enable us to continue to provide compassionate and exceptional healthcare to your neighbors for years to come. Including SVNA in your will enables you to control your assets during your lifetime while providing an important future gift to your community. And, your charitable spirit will be an inspiration to others. Because of generous, forward-thinking friends like you, SVNA has been able to provide advanced healthcare and hospice services to the residents of the Northwest Corner for over 110 years. We thank you!

The services of a qualified legal counsel or a financial planner should be sought for specific advice pertaining to your estate plans.

SVNA By Your Side | 7

On Sunday, June 21, we came together as a Community of Caring to honor and remember our loved ones who had died. The ceremony consisted of poetry readings, spoken and quiet reflections, and sharing of stories. Pat Thorney, an SVNA RN, sang a heartfelt solo, “Turn, Turn, Turn”. The ceremony ended in a release of 350 monarch butterflies. It was a lovely way to honor the memory of our loved ones.

Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association has a New Spokesperson!

Jane Curtin, a long-time resident of the Northwest Corner, is representing SVNA by recording our public

service announcement (PSA) on WHDD Robin Hood Radio in Sharon, CT.

Jane has had a long and illustrious career as an actress and comedian. She was one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. And, in

1984, she starred in the family sitcom Kate & Allie, earning two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress. In 1996, she also starred

in another successful comedy series, 3rd Rock from the Sun.

So tune into WHDD Radio (91.9 FM or 1020AM) and listen to our new spokesperson or go to our website for the link: www.salisburyvna.org. We are thrilled and honored that Jane Curtin is the new voice of SVNA!

A Day of Remembrance & Special Butterfly Release

Our first, annual Community Health and Wellness fair was held on October 1, 2015 at the Town Grove in Lakeville from 3-5pm. Close to 60 residents came to take advantage of the free health fair, which provided attendees with a wellness screening, skin cancer screenings performed by Dr. Laurie Slotnick, fall risk assessments, flu shots, social services, and an opportunity to meet with an Affordable Care Act Assister and Medicare Advisor, Janet Carlson of PharmaCare. SVNA staff was also on hand to discuss SVNA services and supports available to the community. Participants received door prizes and participated in several free raffles.

Michelle Holst-Grubbe, RN provides a wellness screening at the health fair.
