Dear Friends,

Greetings from Global Ayurveda Festival 2020!

Civilizations have endorsed intellectual conclaves as their existential necessity. When great minds met history was made…or unmade. Powerful thoughts have changed the course of politics, countries and

mankind. Whenever human being felt it difficult to “be”, guiding thoughts have come as saviors. It was this profundity in a blessed few that helped the advent of Ayurveda from its celestial abodes, as the myth exalts. An impeccable system of thinking and communicating kept this sastra alive, helping it keep an unbroken continuity, helping it trounce intimidating invasions and innumerable adversities. Let us salute those masters and their minds!

The sparks of the quest for knowledge and experience have expunged all boundaries and we stand with our traditional wisdom facing a global community represented by simple clientele to serious scientists. We are happy to invite you for the Global Ayurveda Festival 2020, planned to make the most needed dialogue to happen on Ayurveda in a contemporaneous setting. It will be for 5 days from 16 to 20, May 2020. Angamaly, Kerala will become the venue for us to see new dreams about Ayurveda and to get guided to materialize them.

This time GAF will have having three major components, an International Seminar, a Global Ayurveda Exhibition and an International Cooperation Conclave.

Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), in association with the Governmental and Non-Governmental bodies, is organizing this Global Ayurveda Festival. As in the previous Festivals, we are bringing together the best for the Ayurveda fraternity– to learn, to experience, to collaborate, to progress and to expand. It will be an event that meets the needs of all - from students to scientists, from practitioners to policy makers and from educationalists to entrepreneurs.

Welcome – the world is waiting!

Global Ayurveda

It represents theglorious traditions of Kerala Ayurveda

It’s a Global

It is a Festival

Kerala had remained the cradle of pristine knowledge, culture and heritage, including that of Ayurveda. Ayurveda,

as it is practiced in Kerala, has come to represent an untainted form of traditional Indian wisdom on health and medicine. This virgin form of Ayurveda has been enriched with immense regional innovations and improvements to take the shape and form we see today. The contributions of Ayurveda traditions of Kerala, in the form of commentaries to classical treatises and as texts on applied Ayurveda and as formulations and treatment modalities, have made this state emerge as “Ayurveda’s own country” for seekers across the globe. The status of Ayurveda in Kerala is thus unique, with many living traditions unknown to other parts of the country and with the highest practitioners to population ratio in comparison to any other place in the world.

For the individuals and institutions cherishing a dream to go global – GAF 2020 is the beginning. It is a platform to

coordinate the efforts of all committed members from these countries to place Ayurveda as a global system of medicine. The stakeholders from many countries will be sharing their experience, needs and ideas for collaborations as they look at Ayurveda as something worth depend upon. GAF – the vision and the opportunity are truly, purely global. The previous editions of GAF had encouraging participation of stakeholders from world over, precisely from 42 countries in the last GAF. We expect more participation this time and foresee contacts, business, services and expertise transcending boundaries with ease.

GAF is conceived not as an exclusive serious academic program or just as a fun filled celebration. It is indeed a

‘festival’ in its true sense. “Utsava”, the festival in Sanskrit, means ‘upwardly mobile/flowing’. It is also a significant ritual traditionally initiated to rectify the negativities that lessen the presence of divinity in a place of worship. The intention behind GAF is similar – the authenticity and purity of Ayurveda are to be upheld and the upward progression of this science needs to be facilitated. It has a combination of everything essential for this to happen – intense academic sessions, exhibition, panel discussions, debates, public awareness programs, social participations, incorporation of art and culture, etc.

Globalization is the spread of products, services, information, and jobs across national borders

and cultures. For a traditional knowledge system like Ayurveda, it is a social, cultural,

scientific, political, and legal phenomenon. What we wish and strive for is a globalization that

doesn’t alter the identity of Ayurveda. GAF 2020 is meant to project and promote authentic Ayurveda

with science, services, products and policies occupying the centre stage of expositions, deliberations

and exhibition, arranged as part of this mega event. GAF 2020 will function as a platform for global

players, policy makers, practitioners and preachers to meet and transcend to the next level, in business,

international facilitations, and universal health care. The door to the world that waits for Ayurveda

opens with GAF. Enrol and Explore!

Since the time men sails in search of treasure, pleasure, land and wisdom, to buy or to sell or just for adventure a good number of foreign

feet that fell on Indian soil, sought perfection and a sense of completeness. Ayurveda and Yoga were the two streams of Indian knowledge that helped them achieve spiritual, mental and physical well being. This happened much before we realized the economic importance of Ayurveda and Yoga. Government of India has decided to make these traditions available to the humanity and to make use of the potential and advantages that are available in India in the field of Medical and Wellness Tourism.Medical and Wellness paradigms sustain the health continuum – something very close to Ayurveda in concept and application.

The scope of Ayurveda as a curative medical system is immense in a global platform. Add to this the roaring wellness industry that provides Ayurveda care, mainly preventive in nature, especially for the major killers – the life style diseases. India is considered as the fastest growing travel destination for health seekers, with a projected 22 % annual

growth as per the latest available Global Wellness Tourism Economics Report. Such an international tourist contributes more towards foreign exchange than an average international tourist as the first spends 65% more than the latter. These medical and wellness tourism potential of Ayurveda translates the “incredibility” of India to a more meaningful manner.

GAF 2020 is bringing together the world of Ayurveda’s medical/wellness care providers and its health seekers to one platform this May. Here we will proudly showcase this potential of Ayurveda to the world, deliberate course of action for a global promotion of Ayurveda’s medical potential and present to the policy makers, an undeniable proposal for a better positioning of Ayurveda – nationally and then globally.

Ayurveda Medical Tourism will be featured in all the three major components of GAF 2020, International Seminar, Global Ayurveda Exhibition and Global Ayurveda Matrix, as plenary deliberations, exhibits and business explorations respectively.

Focal Theme - Ayurveda Medical Tourism : Actualizing India’s Incredibility

The concept of Healthy Child, Healthy World is gaining popularity across the globe.

World Health Organization’s statement - Children represent the future, and ensuring their healthy growth and development ought to be a prime concern of all societies – places this responsibility on the shoulders of a larger community than just that of the conventional medicine. It is time to understand the possibilities of Ayurveda in Child Care and effectively incorporate it in policies and plans. The concept of Child care in Ayurveda starts from pre-conception stage, with

the preparation of the father and the mother, proceeds through pregnancy care and ends when the child attains adulthood. We saw many of these concepts misrepresented and debated unhealthily in recent times. GAF takes as its responsibility to bring clarity and conviction to the true possibilities of Ayurveda in this area through a structured seminar on key aspects of child care, like:

•Preparation to conceive a healthy child

•Pregnancy Care•Post-natal care•Neonatal care

•Immunization and Ayurveda•Paediatric nutrition•Praakaara yoga, Suvarnaprasa•Growth and Development•Common paediatric conditions

and their management•behavioural and psychological

disorders•Developmental disorders•Genetics•Healthy upbringing

The purpose of the seminar is to expand the presence of Ayurveda, to place it effectively in public health domain and thus play a prominent role in child care and nation building.

Resurgent Ayurveda: Science initiatives in Ayurveda Many multidisciplinary approaches are now known that studied the concepts, procedures and products of Ayurveda in terms of modern sciences such as Molecular biology, Immunology and Chemistry etc. Government of India had an ambitious initiative called Golden Triangle Partnership for validation of traditional Ayurvedic Drugs and development of new drugs.

Ayurveda biology, the pioneer initiative for the above objectives, is the most inspiring among the many for its outcome, impact and reach. This panel discussion will have the best brains that worked, and continue working, in these areas of research and revalidation – all meant to make Ayurveda resurgent once again in a newer world and time. The intention of this discussion is to let know the status and progress of these initiatives to a global community and thus inspire them in their pursuits to popularise Ayurveda.

Co-location of Ayurveda Co-location of AYUSH services at Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres and District Hospitals is a Government initiative to mainstream AYUSH systems. Many corporate hospitals have also established Ayurveda unit in their facilities. This Panel Discussion is meant take stock of this practice of co-location and assess how far it has helped to mainstream traditional medical system – whether it is integrated, allowed to involve or is just tolerated is what we will discuss here. The panel will consist of conventional medical experts, heads of leading corporate hospitals, Ayurveda doctors running such centres and Government representatives.

Environment, Climate Change and AyurvedaThe period we are currently on Earth is called as Anthropocene, the geologic timescale dating from the commencement of significant human impact on the Earth’s geology and ecosystems. This period has the maximum negative impact on Earth, with human impact causing sizeable damage to the biodiversity, climate etc and forcing us to live with serious environmental issues like climate change, pollution, environmental degradation and resource depletion. This situation is alarming for the stakeholders of Ayurveda, as the science they represent depends heavily on the Nature. This session is to bring together environmental and Ayurveda experts to assess the impact of the changes in the Nature – like the changing disease patterns, dwindling natural resources etc. It is a responsible and important initiative under GAF.

Vaidya Parishad A discussion forum of practitioners. A prescribed format to better our practical knowledge. For the first time in such a large platform.

This is meant exclusively to whet the clinical decision making skills – to diagnosis and to prescription. Individual practitioners and representatives of leading clinical establishments will present rare/complex cases in the presence of experts, which will be followed by discussion on the process and correctness of the diagnostics and treatment decisions.

ASEAn mEEt: traditional medicines for Global HealthIndia, along with China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand and the ASEAN Countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, brunei, vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia – constitute the ASEAN Plus Six group. It is a regional intergovernmental organization, which promotes cooperation and facilitates economic, political, security, military, educational and socio-cultural integration among its members and other countries in Asia. Many of these countries share cultural, religious and philosophical identities. The traditional medical knowledge in these countries also shares certain similarities, paving a way to interact, to associate and to mutually help establish more effectively. The “ASEAN Way” refers to a methodology or approach to solving issues that respects the cultural norms and in a traditional medical context it means useful application for a scientific and political global footing.

In this edition of GAF, we will

have practitioners, researchers, students and other stakeholders of traditional medical systems of these countries, coming to explore Ayurveda. We are expecting the participation of governmental representatives and policy makers from these countries.

International Delegate Assembly :Globalizing Ayurveda - Scope, Chal-lenges and SolutionsAyurveda services and products are available all over the world. There are many Ayurveda learning opportunities in all these places too. There are isolated initiatives in the research field as well. However, only in a few countries Ayurveda related activities happen in a legal and ethical manner because of many reasons that are unfavourable. Despite that there are crusaders across the globe, passionately committed to the promotion of Ayurveda, fighting many adversities to establish authentic Ayurveda. In this discussion we will have major players from the US, Europe, Russia, Latin American Countries, ASEAN countries discussing their country specific scope, challenges and solutions in the presence of formal representatives of governments.

Special Session on Ayurveda medical tourism This will be a high-level event aimed at stakeholders from global medical tourism and international patient market and service providers from medical, wellness and hospitality industry in India. The purpose

is to highlight the medical might of Ayurveda, to iron out policies and plans for adaptation to newer global medical requirements and to facilitate meeting and formalizing collaborations with global partners. This session will be attended by Governmental representatives too, who have admirable initiatives to promote Medical and Health Tourism in target markets and at various international platforms by making use of the potential and advantages that are available in India – like Ayurveda.

Panel Discussion Ayurveda in Africa: Assessing India’s Preparedness

India and Africa share a rich history of use of traditional medicines in healthcare delivery. Of late there is also a growing global recognition of efficacy of traditional health prac-tices in meeting local healthcare needs. In light of the recent policy push towards greater engagement with Africa through the ‘10 Guiding Principles for India Africa Engage-ment’, Ayurveda can serve as an important vehicle to meet the ob-jective of one of the Principles, i.e., healthcare support. India’s oral and written tradition of Ayurveda can be leveraged towards introduction in healthcare delivery and export of products and services to Africa. The rise of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, heart dis-eases, and diabetes, and high costs associated with modern health care systems give Ayurveda an opportu-nity to showcase its relative strength in the area. Offering such services and using its own experience to facilitate integration of traditional

African medicine into the continent’s na-tional health care systems open up new possibilities towards deepening India’s engagement with Africa.

India’s own domestic preparedness for this global promotion becomes crucial in this regard. Ensuring product safety and quality assurance through stringent standards subscriptions is imperative. besides domestic standards, it is global standards development that will give Ayurveda the acceptance in interna-tional destinations like Africa. Given the extensive use of medicinal plants as a fundamental component in traditional healthcare system, sustainability and traceability in supply of raw materials is also important. Cooperation and mutual support at international fora relevant for traditional medicine is key to growth of traditional medicine systems of India and Africa. Towards this end, evolving joint strategies for expansion of trade classification through Harmonised Sys-tem (HS) of Codes is important. India- Africa partnership at the World Customs Organisation (WCO) for expansion of HS codes to accomodate herbal sector could prove a mutually beneficial proposition The Panel will explore prospects and challenges of trade in Ayurvedic and herbal products and services. It will also discuss promotion of Ayurveda in Africa including possible areas of collaboration and suggest strategies towards this end.

Kerala Ayurveda Alumni meet

Kerala Ayurveda Alumni meet will pro-vide a unique platform for the alumni of Kerala Ayurveda from across the globe to come together to discuss, debate and cooperate for mutual advantage. The meet will also explore the role that the alumni could play in the growth and development of Ayurveda, especially guiding young entrants to the opportuni-ties around the world.

Ayurveda Solidarity Meet will bring together various public personalities like

Political leaders, Policy makers, Educationists, Poets, Writers, and Social Workers, who are ardent followers of Ayurveda to generate more interest among the public to pursue Ayurveda and to give a much needed impetus to the efforts of mainstreaming Ayurveda both in India and abroad.

Cultural MeetAyurveda is deeply in grained into the cultural ethos of India, and it is only logical that we leverage the natural patronage that Ayurveda holds among the cultural icons of our times to promote Ayurveda

locally and globally. The Ayurveda cultural meet is being organised with the intention of bringing together cultural icons from varying background to give voice to their immense belief in Ayurveda and thereby reach out to public at large.

Political MeetPolitical patronage is critical for any scientific system to reach out and gain prominence in a society, and it may not be incorrect to say that Ayurveda has not received political attention and patronage that it ought to have, in the country of its origin in the last six and half decades since independence. The Ayurveda political meet is

being conceived at GAF with the intention of engaging with the political class to expose them to the inherent strengths of Ayurveda as a complete healthcare system and its immense contemporary potential.

Media MeetThe fourth estate plays a very important role in our social life and for a science in transition a proactive support from their side is a must. This meet is meant to bring together senior journalists from print and visual media to garner support for contemporary Ayurveda.

Ayurveda Solidarity Meet

Ayurveda MSME Meet (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises)

Ayurveda industry, majorly its manufacturing and service sectors, is

dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises and together they contribute more than the major players – whether towards the growth of this sector or in the provision of employment opportunities. However most of them have a growth or a reach that is not proportionate to their potential. The limiting factors are many, one being the lack of a

coordinated effort to facilitate the development of these enterprises as also enhance their competitiveness, despite the immense support governmental initiatives offer. This meet is to bring together the majority stakeholders of Ayurveda sector whose enterprises belong to the micro, small or medium categories. This meet is also meant to help beginners dreaming entrepreneurship. The Meet will focus on:

•Innovation promotion,

•Technology and quality upgradation,

•International cooperation, •Cluster development, •Marketing assistance and •Entrepreneurial and managerial

developmentall meant to augment the productivity, demand and reach of this sector enterprises. It will also be an opportunity to know about the various schemes under the Ministry for each of these objectives.

Kerala has preserved and propagated authentic ayurveda with a perennial vigor since time immemorial. We cherish the contributions this tiny state has made in the form of texts with clinically supportive contents, commentaries of classical texts, treatment

methods and effective formulations. We balance the purity, antiquity and contemporaneity of Ayurveda in practice, research and production so as to maintain the reputation the state always had and to position our tradition globally more effectively. The two week long celebration from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod, will bring together every local Ayurveda institutions to highlight their strength and the regional excellences through activities of their choice. The Grand Kerala Ayurveda Fair, planned as part of GAF, is to show multiple and best options to the seekers. It is also a show of our strength.

Kerala is known for its Centres of Clinical Excellence in Ayurveda. The GAF will offer for all interested participants guided tours to selected centres of excellence in South and North Kerala, like manufacturing facilities, hospitals, research centres, medicinal plant gardens and educational institutions. Two trips, one to South Kerala and the other to North Kerala will be arranged on the last day of GAF 2020 and the interested participants can book for one of these trips in advance.

For details log on to www.gaf.co.in

The expo will feature different clinics under AYUSH streams, and will offer consultations by the eminent clinicians of Ayurveda specialties, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy and Naturopathy. A special feature of the clinics will be speciality clinics, which will provide free consultation to the general public by eminent Ayurveda clinicians from different Ayurveda specialities like Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Mental health etc. It is an opportunity for the public to meet the best physicians and get best care & advice. Physicians of all participating institutions will be given slots to lend clinical service to the visiting public, whose number is expected to be in tens of thousands daily.

One of the most critical determinants of the efficacy of Ayurveda intervention is the quality of the raw drugs that goes into the production of Ayurveda medicine. There are around 900 species of medicinal plants that are used by the AYUSH industry and around 300 of them come under the category of RET (Rare, Endangered and Threatened). Another issue that plagues the industry where raw drug sourcing is largely unorganised is that of Adulteration and drug substitution. GAF therefore felt the need to have an exclusive meet to interact with Medicinal Plant cultivators and collectors with the intention of discussing issues pertaining to conservation, sustainability and preservation of natural bio-diversity while addressing issues that affect the livelihood of the people involved.

GAF 2020 will have a pavilion for job seekers and providers in the Ayurveda sector. Senior representatives of major organizations will spend time at the site to interact with potential candidates so as to meet their human resource requirements for their Indian and foreign initiatives. Doctors, Managers, Therapists, Pharmacists, Nurses etc are welcome to use this facility at GAF. A schedule of the availability of industry representatives will be made available before the event.

Themes :1. Ayurveda - Life in tune with nature

2. Medicinal Plants

An ‘All India Photography Competition and Exhibition’ will be organised in two themes in connection with GAF 2020, with entries from all over India. The selected entries will be exhibited in the GAF 2020 venue. The entry form may be downloaded from the website. Photocopies of the entry form may also be used. There are experts in Kerala and Tamilnadu, representing Ayurveda, Siddha and Kalari, who with their use their knowledge about marma to devise treatments not just for trauma but also for many com-mon pathologies. This Workshop will bring the best of both these traditions and it will be an op-portunity for those who want to better their skills as clinicians.

Workshop on taxonomy of medicinal Plants Medicinal plant usage in Ayurve-da manufacturing sector faces unusual difficulties unlike in the past. Dwindling natural resourc-es, for reasons like destructive harvesting and adverse climatic conditions, is a prime concern. Add to that the rampant adulter-ation triggered by greed or just an inability to meet the demand. Industry stakeholders adhering

to their medicine manufactur-ing ethics, depend heavily on taxonomy experts to identify the right raw material and reject the wrong – a fete possible even from samples of dried plant parts. This workshop is planned to highlight that role of taxonomist and to help them share their expertise to the QC staff of Ayurveda manu-facturing industries.

Workshop on ‘fooD AS mEDICInE” (Exclusively for foreign delegates)

Food and activities cover broadly all the external factors responsible for healthy and unhealthy states of life. For that reason all diseases are understood as “lifestyle disorders”, giving a prominence to dietary and activity modification as part of the treatment regime. Among the two, food is more important as it is one of the sustaining pillars of life. Many diseases could be managed, or even corrected, just by deciding what you choose to eat, how you process it and how much you eat. Knowledge about the basic concepts of food and nutrition, properties and use of various food items, healthy combinations of food items and their processing are what intended to be taught as part of this workshop. This workshop is exclusively for foreign delegates. Use of knowledge of application of “food as medicine’ will be helpful to compensate the legal restrictions on Ayurveda modalities and offer primary care in common disease conditions.
