Dear friend,

We are delighted you have come to join us here at historic St. Rose Church. Our program today is rich in some of the world’s most revered choral music and is centered around Frank Martin’s stirring Mass for Double Choir, one of the great masterpieces for a cappella choir. Martin completed the final movement in 1926, but as a devout Calvinist who experienced his faith privately, he did not allow the work to be seen or heard until 1963. After its premiere that year, he wrote, “I considered it to be a matter between God and myself. I felt that a personal expression of religious belief should remain secret and hidden from public opinion.” From the first lone melody of the Kyrie to the last sonority of the Agnus Dei, Martin’s choral writing is breathtaking and the intensity of his unyielding faith and personal struggle is palpable.

Each of us can certainly relate to Martin’s earnest faith and determination. We all live our own struggle every day, and in our quest to find happiness and grace, we stumble upon rocks of pain and fear. In these times of great turmoil and loss, we find strength in faith, hope, and the incredible love of God, our family and friends, and the individuals we hold most dear.

We hope to lead you on a musical journey of healing as we reflect on the timeless messages of these extraordinary works—the power of faith, hope and love. In a world wrought with violence, injustice, and hate, we often find ourselves living in the path of fear. However, there is another path; a path where we embrace each other and strive to create a safer world where all people feel respected and loved…

Today and every day, let us choose the path of love.

Trevor Kroeger Director of Music

Bring us, O Lord God – William Harris (1883-1973) Text by John Donne Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening into the house and gate of heaven: to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence, but one equal music; no fears nor hopes, but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings, but one equal eternity; in the habitation of thy glory and dominion, world without end. Beati quorum via, Op. 38, No. 3 – Charles V. Stanford (1852-1924) Beati quorum via integra est, Blessed are the undefiled in the way, qui ambulant in lege Domini. who walk in the law of the Lord.

The Beatitudes – Arvo Pärt (b. 1935)

Blessed are the poor in spirit:

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn:

for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek:

for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness:

for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful:

for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart:

for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers:

for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake:

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you,

and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad:

for great is your reward in heaven:

for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Amen.

And I Saw A New Heaven – Edgar Bainton (1880-1956) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God.”

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

Even When He Is Silent – Kim André Arnesen (b. 1980) Text: Anonymous 21st century, Germany I believe in the sun, even when it's not shining.

I believe in love, even when I feel it not.

I believe in God, even when He is silent.

Angel Band – arranged by Shawn Kirchner (b. 1970)

from Heavenly Home: Three American Songs Text by Jefferson Hascall, Song Tune by William Bradbury

Verse One:

The latest sun is sinking fast,

my race is almost run.

My strongest trials now are past,

my triumph is begun.

Chorus:

O come, angel band

Come and around me stand

O bear me away on your snow-white wings

to my immortal home,

Bear me away on your snow-white wings

to my immortal home.

Verse Two:

I know I’m near the holy ranks

of friend and kindred dear;

I’ve brushed the dew on Jordan’s banks,

the crossing must be near.

Verse Three:

I’ve almost gained my heavenly home –

my spirit loudly sings.

The Holy Ones, behold they come –

I hear the noise of wings.

Unclouded Day – arranged by Shawn Kirchner (b. 1970) from Heavenly Home: Three American Songs Words and Music by Rev. J.K. Alwood

O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies,

They tell me of a home far away,

And they tell me of a home

Where no storm-clouds rise:

O they tell me of an unclouded day.

O the land of cloudless days

O the land of an unclouded sky,

O they tell me of a home

Where no storm-clouds rise:

O they tell me of an unclouded day.

O they tell me of a home

Where my friends have gone,

They tell me of a land far away,

Where the tree of like in eternal bloom

Sheds its fragrance through the unclouded day.

They tell me of a King in his beauty there,

They tell me that mine eyes shall behold

Where He sits on a throne

That is bright as the sun

In the city that is made of gold!

The CHOIR OF ST. ROSE CHURCH is a chamber choral ensemble comprised of professional singers who prepare music for Sunday Masses, major liturgical observances, and other special events. These include singing each week at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass and presenting annual concerts in May and December. The ensemble’s repertoire of sacred choral literature spans nearly six centuries and is anchored in the rich tradition of Roman Catholic choral music. In 2014, with the support of Rev. Barry Windholtz, music director Trevor Kroeger founded the ensemble, which seeks to enhance the worship experience at St. Rose by providing spiritual inspiration through a high standard of musical leadership.

The sanctuary features three large altars made from beechnut wood. The

center, or Main, altar is of a different architectural style than that of the

two side altars. The reason for this difference is that on January 31, 1894,

servers lighting candles for a wedding set the main altar on fire. Naturally,

by doing so, considerable damage was done. The church was restored in

July 1894, and the altars were painted after the flood of 1937, when water

of the Ohio River reached to the middle of the statues, cresting at 80 feet.

The design in the center of the dome above the Main Altar—two crossed

anchors surrounded by a crown of thorns, a thimble, a pin cushion, and

two needles—is the symbol of St. Rose, who, as a Tertiary Dominican,

made her living by sewing.
