Dear Family of Faith, What an honor to have an overview of the many “pieces” or ministries of our St. Benedict Parish. Daily, from moment to moment, I am grateful to have a snapshot of the different pieces of parish life that comprise the whole! In each piece, in each area, in each ministry, God’s grace and love is very much evident. From the kids playing in the playground to the bedside visit of a parishioner who is sick, each piece is a life-giving example of God shining His grace into our lives. It is an honor to witness these moments and an honor to present them to you today. Our Annual Report is a snapshot of the “pieces” of our dynamic and vital parish life. As you reflect on the many pieces, especially the ministries of our Human Concerns Commission, Catechetical Commission, Education Commission, Parish Life Commission, and Spiritual Life Commission, I invite you to reflect on the gifts you have made to keep each of these areas so alive and vital. Thank you for your generosity in that regard. Without your strong sense of stewardship, your desire to give back to your parish for all that God has entrusted to you, we would not be able to stay as vital as we are today. Thank you! Speaking of vitality and stewardship, we have all heard of the invitation to offer our “Time, Talent and Treasure”. I would like to invite you to think about stewardship in a little different way. Can you think about living out your faith with this short reminder, GPS: Give, Pray, and Serve? As we teach our children, GPS is a great way to remember direction to Jesus in our lives. Together with two additional reminders, Belong and Learn, these words have grown into our five St. Benedict pillars. We have been experimenting with sharing these fundamental pillars and have found great success. Do they resonate with you? Belong, Learn, Give, Pray, and Serve? Please share the good news with your neighbor or with someone who is seeking out what we have here at St. Benedict - a strong, faith-filled, prayerful family of faith. So many people desire to belong, so many people desire to know Jesus more deeply and intimately, and so many people desire what we have. Can you be an agent of that invitation? Can you invite others to Mass with you on Sunday? Can you encourage people to dive deeply into St. Benedict Parish and connect to one of the many pieces here ready for connection? Thanks in advance for your contribution to the “pieces” and thanks for helping others to do the same. Our number one mission is to invite people to come to know Jesus more deeply. For the ways that you embark upon that journey and invite others to do the same, ‘thank you! In the service of Christ, Fr. Jason Malave Fr. Dear Family of Faith,

What an honor to have an overview of the many “pieces” or ministries of our St.

CAPSTONE VALUES AT ST. BENEDICT PARISH & PREPARATORY SCHOOL

BELONG Belonging is a fundamental desire of all humans. As Catholic Christians, you were welcomed into God’s family at Baptism and continue to grow and belong to God’s family in a parish community. With great joy you are welcomed into St. Benedict Parish and all her dynamic ministries. We pray that you invest yourself lovingly and generously so that you have the freedom to give, pray, serve, learn, and belong.

LEARN When it comes to growing in faith, we are truly life-long learners. The richness of our faith demands that we continue to give time, effort, and attention to learning about our faith. Not only does scripture continue to unfold new meaning each time we read it, but the annual liturgical cycle continues to unfold new pearls of wisdom as we pray our way through each season. Through Bible study, small faith group participation, our Parish Mission, and countless catechetical opportunities, we learn more about the beauty and richness that is our Catholic Faith.

GIVE We give generously of our time, talent, and treasure on a regular basis. In terms of our treasure, we as Catholics are invited to share the gifts that have been bestowed so generously on us. In sharing these gifts, we are offering thanks to God and dynamically supporting our St. Benedict Parish. In addition to ordinary Sunday income, three annual appeals, Forward In Our Faith for campus transformation, The Annual School Fund for annual needs of our school, and The Annual Catholic Appeal for the needs of our Archdiocese, help us grow most profoundly in extraordinary ways.

PRAY The most powerful way that we pray is during Mass every weekend. It is here that we gather around the Eucharistic table and thank God for all of His gifts and blessings. Our weekend Mass times are Saturday at 5:00 PM and Sunday at 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 12 noon, and 6:30 PM. Around the Eucharistic table is where we are fed and nourished so that we can serve God and practice our faith in Christ. In addition to weekend Mass, monthly Taize prayer services, Tuesday morning devotion, and Holy Days of Obligation help us on our Spiritual journey.

SERVE Service is the natural outgrowth of an active faith life together. There are multiple ways for you to serve our community and offer your time and talent. The more generously you serve St. Benedict Parish, the more you will feel a sense of belonging. All St. Benedict Parish ministries are grouped together into five dynamic commissions: Spiritual Life, Education, Catechesis, Human Concerns, and Parish Life. The 60 plus ministries all fall under these five organizing commissions to help focus our efforts and be most effective.

SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISSION MINISTRIES

PRAYThe most powerful way that we pray is during Mass every weekend. It is here that we gather around the Eucharistic table and thank God for all of His gifts and blessings.

Singing and music add to our praise and worship of God. The St. Benedict Music Ministry, under the direction of Mr. Jeremy Kiolbassa, has added new music groups and incorporated new prayer opportunities that will help us continue to pray and sing well together.

Last year, two new teen ensembles were added. The teen instrumental ensemble, Bass Winds & Fire, and the teen vocal group, The Tone Rangers, are made up of joyful young people in grades 6-12. Both groups, along with our Adult Choir, have added to our prayer at our Sunday Masses. In addition, special holiday and seasonal concerts have helped showcase our beautiful sacred space and acoustics.

A new monthly prayer opportunity, Taize Prayer, takes place every first Friday at 7:30 PM in Church. Taize Prayer, named after a town in France, was started shortly after World War II. Amidst the turmoil, a small group of Christians came together in prayer using simple, repeated melodies and silent reflection to hear the voice of God. Today, our Taize Prayer is a combination of reflective music, silence, and scripture. The service takes place by candlelight and icons are placed around the church to create an atmosphere that is calm and contemplative.

Music, like all things, is a gift from God. The Music Ministry at St. Benedict Parish is guided by this belief. Our lives as Catholics centers on the Eucharist. The Music Ministry at St. Benedict Parish uses their talents to help us lift up our voices to give praise and glory to God.

SERVEService is the natural outgrowth of an active faith life together. The more generously you serve St. Benedict Parish, the more you will feel a sense of belonging.

Benedict’s Sanctuary, the domestic violence committee of St. Benedict Parish, came into existence this past year because of an eye-opening November presentation given by Father Charles W. Dahm, a Dominican priest and the Archdiocesan Director of Domestic Violence Outreach. Father Dahm spoke movingly about the prevalence of domestic abuse in our community and its great impact on individual victims, their families, and our society. This became the motivation for a group of concerned parishioners to form a domestic violence ministry at St. Benedict Parish.

This past year, committee members have educated themselves about the facts of domestic violence, including the psychological and legal issues that victims face. Several members have received in-depth domestic violence training. The committee has created informational cards containing domestic violence hotlines and other resources for distribution around the St. Benedict campus. In addition, an informational booth was set up at BenFest to raise awareness about domestic violence in our parish and community.

The mission of Benedict’s Sanctuary is to raise awareness, disseminate information, lay a foundation for the prevention of domestic violence, and provide emergency financial assistance to those seeking to leave an abusive relationship. Although in its early stages, this important ministry will provide support and hope to those in our community seeking help.

Anyone who is suffering domestic abuse is strongly encouraged to seek help, which begins by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233.

LEARNWhen it comes to growing in faith, we are truly life-long learners. As our journey continues to unfold, we learn more about the beauty and richness that is our Catholic faith.

The St. Benedict Parish Youth Ministry was very active in helping our adolescents connect with their faith. Pope Francis designated this year to be a Year of Mercy for the whole Church. Through the study of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, our Youth Ministry practiced works of mercy and charity in our own community. Our young people cooked dinners for families at the Ronald McDonald House, packaged “manna pacs” at Feed My Starving Children, baked cookies for the homebound of our parish, and served at the annual Simbang Gabi Filipino celebration.

In addition, a number of our junior high and high school students participated in a week-long service experience on our campus and attended the Totus Tuus and University of Notre Dame learning experiences during the summer. Our parish Youth Ministry continues to offer opportunities for our youth to explore how God has been merciful to them and how they, in turn, show mercy to others.

EDUCATION COMMISSIONREACHING NEW HEIGHTS: ST. BENEDICT PREPARATORY SCHOOL2016–2021 STRATEGIC PLANThis year we are embarking on the development of a new five year strategic plan. We are proud of the tremendous growth we have been experiencing through the implementation of the last strategic plan. We know that education is changing and evolving rapidly and we need to be clear and intentional about how we move forward to ensure we’re staying on the leading edge.

The key purpose of the strategic plan will make certain that St. Benedict Preparatory School has a clear mission and positions itself to ensure vitality at each level of academic programming with clear goals to support this mission. This will allow us to deliver a world-class Catholic education for years to come. We strive to be proactive and thoughtful in our school’s evolution and have brought in outside perspective and expertise to assist us. The consultant we used has experience with providing direct consultative guidance, research, training programs and materials for Catholic schools across the country. Their data-driven approach engages our parish, school, neighborhood families, teachers and administrators in the development of the strategy that will help shape the future of our St. Benedict Preparatory School.

Over the next several months we will seek additional engagement from members of the parish, faculty and faith community as we further refine and develop the foundation of our strategic plan (School Mission and Positioning). These critical steps will shape the future direction of our parish school.

SOME IMPORTANT DATES TO LOOK OUT FOR INCLUDE:

• Online surveys – November: We’ll be e-mailing a short online survey to school and parishioner families. This is a preliminary phase of research and will inform the mission and positioning concepts that will be explored further in January focus groups.• Focus groups – Jan 2017: We’ll be hosting 30 – 60 minute focus groups with as many school and parish families as possible to gain insight and feedback into the school mission statements. This will inform the future goals of the school. • Recommendation – Spring 2017: The SBPS Advisory Board will submit a data-informed recommendation to Fr. Jason and Ms. Gemo. The final and comprehensive mission and positioning for the school will be approved and deployed.• Implementation – 2017-18 School Year

MAJOR GOALS:GOAL 1: CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND SCHOOL MISSION • To foster spiritual growth for SBPS students, their families and teachers. • To promote outreach and community service and help maintain a vibrant faith community in which all are invited to learn.

GOAL 2: CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND SCHOOL MISSION • To provide a secure, robust and reliable technology infrastructure designed to meet the immediate needs and continually evolve to support the educational mission and curriculum of St. Benedict Prep.

6

Page 7: Dear Family of Faith, What an honor to have an overview of the many

GOAL 3: CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND SCHOOL MISSION • To preserve our strong financial foundation and ensure a continued focus on fiscal discipline and stewardship of the resources that the school receives. • To leverage a data-informed approach that allows us to make informed decisions regarding key aspects of our plans (e.g., tuition, investments in classroom resources).

GOAL 4: CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND SCHOOL MISSION • To ensure the positive perception of St. Benedict is maintained throughout the community for continued sustainability and growth. • To enable richer and more targeted communication between the school faculty and families and students. • To provide an on-going dialogue between the school and its families to address what’s working and what needs to improve.

GOAL 5: CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND SCHOOL MISSION • To provide valuable opportunities for students to enrich learning and leadership experience. • To ensure current academic programs are supported, and new, innovative programs are developed.

Page 8: Dear Family of Faith, What an honor to have an overview of the many

PEACEFUL PLAYGROUNDS: A NECESSARY PIECE OF THE PUZZLEGiving students time and space to play is an important aspect of a well-rounded school program. Students need to have time to play in order to become better learners. Taking a break from sitting and studying actually helps the brain’s ability to remember, focus and process. But recess is not just important for learning academic concepts, it is also important to learn positive social interaction, problem solving and teamwork. We can say that recess fulfills an important part of our school mission.

For many years school parents have wanted to improve the play area for our elementary and middle school students. The parking lot lacked defined play space, the students had to share one basketball hoop, and there was often little or no equipment to play with. The 15 year old preschool playground equipment was in need of updating. The surface of the playground was cracked and dangerous. It was time to give our play spaces a much needed facelift.

Thanks to the efforts of the 2016 Ball and Auction Committee and the Home and School Association, along with volunteer parents, work study volunteers and our hard working maintenance team, upgrades were made over the summer and our students couldn’t be more excited!

Each year at the annual Ball and Auction, the school community hosts a “paddle raise” after the live auction to help meet a specific school need that teachers and administrators would like to see come to fruition. This year, the B&A committee championed the “Rally for Recess” effort, which raised over $50,000 for the new playground. Half of this money went to the courtyard parking lot play area and half went to the cost of the preschool playground surface. So far, we have invested in new basketball hoops, storage for playground equipment, and an innovative program called Peaceful Playgrounds. Peaceful Playgrounds provides playground stencils, activities that teach positive social interactions, and teacher training in implementing the program.

The school administration determined that since we were pouring a new surface, we should also get an updated playground fixture that was more developmentally appropriate and could accommodate more students. Ms. Waldron and Ms. Gemo approached the Home and School Association and asked for a portion of the 2016 Fun Run funds to pay for this new fixture. They agreed, and the result is our new, state-of-the-art preschool playground.

In addition, our Director of the Annual School Fund, Janet Gallagher, submitted a grant to the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce Philanthropy Project to help with the cost of our Peaceful Playgrounds initiative. Thanks to Ms. Gallagher’s efforts and the generosity of the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce, SBPS received an additional $3,500 to help fund the Peaceful Playgrounds initiative.

We have more funds to spend, but have delayed implementation of the “soccer court” in the driveway because of the church roof construction. In addition, we will be hosting a contest for students during the second trimester to devise a plan for the remainder of the funds. We are interested in hearing what the students want for recess. We also want to encourage creative thinking, innovation and problem solving in a real, authentic way. What better way to do this than having students help provide input for the courtyard play area! Watch for more information on this exciting, student-centered contest.

FORWARD IN OUR FAITHCAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATEUndertaking a major parish-wide Capital Campaign is no small undertaking. It demands that every member of our parish embark on a visionary journey to dream a new reality for our parish for the next ten years! This is no small task but this is exactly what happened in February and March of 2015, with our Forward in our Faith Capital Campaign. We undertook to dream into reality three powerful projects:

• Build a new slate roof for our landmark place of worship, our Church, to get her ready to turn 100 years old on March 31, 2017. The cost of this project is $1,600,000. • Completely tuck-point our parish school on Leavitt Street and install new lintels and windows.• Build a new addition to our parish school to house some exciting and innovative educational space.

Our parish has never seen a Capital Campaign of this magnitude. It is not one project, but three separate projects that focus on the Church that shapes our hearts and our souls, the place where we grow as a family of faith. Then, it draws its focus onto the buildings that house our Educational and Catechetical ministries, making sure that they are in great shape for the future!! This comprehensive plan for the future captured the imagination of all who heard about the vision!

With your generosity and with the help of God, you pledged over $4.7 million dollars toward the vision of those three projects. Your generosity was, quite frankly, shocking and powerfully generous. What you said with your gift is that you can vision the future, you see the need for further growth, and you want to invest and belong to a thriving family of faith. This message was heard loud and clear and this strong movement has propelled us forward to begin the first of these powerful projects.

As people fulfill their pledges over the next four years, we will complete the roof project, begin our façade restoration and new window project, and embark on our school building transformation plan. Thank you for your powerful generosity. You have seen a vision into the future, you have embraced that vision, and now we move Forward In Our Faith together. May God continue to bless our vision, our generosity, our building, and our journey Forward In Our Faith.

So far, you have fulfilled your pledges, plus interest, to the total of $1,555,874

Expenses to date include:

• $79,200 - the first of five gifts to the Archdiocese of Chicago for the “To Teach Who Christ Is” Campaign• $224,734 - general expenses to administer the campaign • $20,000 - gift to our sharing parish, Our Lady of the Snows• $590,782 – payment to date towards cost of the new Church roof

Profound gratitude for your generosity!

Honoring a Legacy of Quality Catholic Education: Gathered in the Name of Jesus and Celebrating 65 Years of St. Benedict High School.

St. Benedict Preparatory High School is one of only two parish-sponsored high schools left in Chicago. A high school built to serve parish families back in 1950 now serves Catholic and non-Catholic students from 30 different zip codes across the city. This educational ministry allows the parish and school community to evangelize and form young men and women in the Catholic tradition. The high school portion of the parish school has gone through many changes over the past six decades. Last year, we were happy to celebrate and honor 65 years of our legacy. SBPS hosted a number of events to welcome alumni back and generate support in terms of time, talent and treasure.

All Class Reunion Mass and BBQ On Saturday, August 15, 2015, 150 alums gathered in the courtyard for our All Class Reunion. Good food, plenty of drinks, and reconnecting with old friends made for a great evening. Current high school parents and students prepared the meal and served the food. It was a great way to kick off the 65th year celebration of the high school.

Remembering Opening Day – September 5, 1950 On September 5, 2015, a Mass of Thanksgiving was offered by Father Jason Malave in gratitude for 65 years of blessings and graces received through the institution of our parish high school.

Alumni Hall of Fame Induction to Honor Mrs. Laurette Kittler On Saturday, October 24, 2015, SBPS hosted a dinner in the secondary school cafeteria and musical show in the gym featuring SBPS alumni who were involved in Mrs. Kittler’s drama program during her four-decade tenure. Mrs. Kittler and her daughter traveled all the way from California for this once in a lifetime event. Mrs. Kittler presented the first endowment award to a current SBPS drama student. We give special thanks to the co-chairs, Rich Paschall ’69 and Bill Bergfalk ’76, along with show producer and director, former SBHS teacher, Mike Teolis ’71, as well as other members of the committee.

Homecoming 2015 – Alumni Tailgate Party Besides the Kittler drama program, SBHS is also known for its basketball program. Former SBHS Bengals came out to cheer on our young men and women at the homecoming game on December 4th. Before the games, our guests were treated to a BBQ pork and chili dinner in the secondary school cafeteria and enjoyed reconnecting with other Bengals.

Gathered in the Name of Jesus – 65th Anniversary Liturgy and Reception with Archbishop Blase Cupich On Sunday, May 1st, we closed our 65th Anniversary Year of the High School with a special Mass with Archbishop Cupich presiding. After the mass, we hosted a dinner and a presentation featuring our school musicians and dance students, along with a presentation to Big Shoulders and our high school alumni. It was a prayerful and happy celebration that we will remember for a long time.

PARISH TRANSFORMATION Three years ago, we embarked upon a Parish Transformation process to deepen our relationship with Jesus in the context of our parish ministries. Over the course of the past three years, we have made significant strides in the ten goals that make up our Parish Transformation plan. Thank you for the role you played in implementing these goals and for your continued commitment to strengthening each of these areas in the years to come. Here are five highlights:

Goal 3 - Establish Catechetical programs around life milestones For the first time, we were able to hire a Director of Youth Ministry, Mrs. Kim McMillan. With a singular focus of gathering teenagers, we were able to keep inviting our young parishioners to a deeper relationship with Jesus and their parish. Through activities, service, spiritual growth and social activities, they bonded with one another and with Jesus.

Similarly, our young adults found new energy and enthusiasm through the work of our former Pastoral Associate, Elizabeth Kustusch-Beard. Working in union with St. Andrew, our young adult population increases significantly and a renewed community was born. This great work continues this year with the support of Mrs. Kim McMillan.

And finally, the gift of Sr. Helen Kling to our Pastoral Staff has meant more vitality for our senior parishioners. With the formation of a new Senior Council, Sr. Helen wisely chose to focus on spiritual growth and investment for our seniors, as the social activities are well tended to at the Senior Campus on Western and Irving. Once again, a new community was born.

Goal 4 - Connect families to catechesis and MassThe result of a second day of Religious Education means more families and their children involved in our Religious Education. This, in turn, has meant larger First Communion and Confirmation classes and more families committing to the eight year process of Religious Education grades first through eighth. We see great growth in the ministry of Catechesis!

Goal 7 - Champion our Parish Preparatory SchoolThis past year saw the creation of our new strategic plan for our school. With wide involvement and consultation, we looked to vision what we hope our school can continue to be and become five years from now. Much more on this will be shared as our School Advisory Board continues to develop five year goals.

Goal 9 - Teach stewardship and increase givingTo date, almost half of our Sunday giving comes through our online portal, GiveCentral. This means that your Sunday giving is regular and consistent and not dependent on travel schedules, soccer schedules, or snow days. Your generosity through GiveCentral allows us to predict cash flow and not get stuck if bad weather happens or vacations happen. Thank you for signing up for GiveCentral and making your Sunday gift, Christmas gift, Easter gift, and special collection gifts online. If you have not signed up yet, do so before you become part of the minority cash givers. Thank you for you powerful generosity.

Goal 10 - Design and plan for future capital needsFollowing the development of the Parish Transformation plan, we embarked upon our Campus Master Plan. The Campus Master Plan identified the significant capital facility needs that face us. This, of course, gave way to the Forward in our Faith campaign. Last year plans were made for the beginning of construction on our new church roof. The process of identifying the scope of work to be done on the Church roof and on the Church tuck pointing needed to be complete before one slate tile could be replaced. The formal bidding process resulted in Mortenson Roofing’s selection as the project contractor. This was the hard work of preparation before the major project could be undertaken.

Profound thanks to the Parish Council and members of the Parish Transformation team who helped shepherd these projects. A strong sense of pride and accomplishment fills the hearts of those who participated on the Parish Transformation team. You can clearly see that the roadmap set out three years ago is well on its way to being implemented.

St. Benedict Parish Transformation Objectives

FIGURING OUT THE MISSING PIECES TO THE FINANCIAL PICTURE Since 2012, St. Benedict Parish and Preparatory School has experienced a positive financial picture. Our blessings were magnified and amplified, and we sought to take advantage of this situation. We paid off our debt and loans to the Archdiocese of Chicago; invested in our parish campus long-term plan with our master planning project; kicked off a very successful capital campaign called Forward In Our Faith; started two “rainy day” savings accounts for facilities and school needs; and started a parish educational endowment which now exceeds over $140,000 in principal funds. The parish Religious Education and School programs saw unprecedented growth in population and the registered families in the parish grew to 3,200. The church was so full that an additional Sunday mass was added to accommodate all churchgoers.

Fast forward to 2015-2016: The housing market started to heat up, and some parish and school families decided to move out of state, seeking new paths. Because of this, there was a small decline in enrollment in the parish school, as well as some other financial factors that led to a significant parish and school deficit for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. While the numbers on the preceding page tell a “black and white” story, it is necessary for us to explain the factors that led to this deficit and the efforts made by the parish and school leadership to address these issues.

Reason #1: SBPS did not accurately budget for tuition and fees at the beginning of the fiscal year. Money from tuition and fees accounts for 80% of our total budget and is really important to get it right.• A change in fee structure led to a miscalculation in income and expenses. All fees, with the exception of the registration and new family fees were rolled into tuition last fiscal year. Some of these fees were double-counted as income. • The projected tuition on which we based the budget income was not calculated accurately. This was due in part to a lower than anticipated amount donated by outside funding sources. Further, the budget reflected some scholarship income listed twice. There were also inaccuracies projected for parishioner, multi-child and employee discounts. • At the end of the fiscal year, there was approximately $55,000 in delinquent tuition and fees not collected. This amount is slightly higher than in past years. We are also still trying to collect $44,000 in delinquent tuition from the 2014-2015 school year. Some families moved out of the school throughout the year which also lowered the collectable tuition.

Reason #2: St. Benedict Parish and Preparatory School experienced a drop in net fundraising proceeds for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. • Fund Our Future (FOF) was down by $45,000 from budget. We budgeted $120,000 for FOF with a reasonable expectation for it to come in based on historical trends. The budgeted number was a drop of $25,000 collected in the previous year (2014-2015). The funds were to be used to pay for teacher retention programs (graduate coursework assistance, meal cards and substantial employee discounts) plus an unusually high investment in textbooks grades PK-8. Many of these expenses were incurred in the summer well in advance of the income. • Ball and Auction 2016: We projected net income of $250,000 after expenses, Fund-a-Need reserves and the 10% fundraising allocation to Build Our Future. The 2016 Ball and Auction raised $210,250 after subtracting Fund-a-Need ($50,000+) and 10% Build Our Future transfer of $22,000. • BenFest 2015: BenFest 2015 raised $31,164 for the parish and school. Due to bad weather over the BenFest weekend, this amount fell short of the budgeted $48,000. Reason #3: Salary and Benefits were not in-line with student population and teacher: student ratio. • Student/teacher ratio (particularly in the secondary school) was not in line with financial best practices. Several classes had students/teacher ratios that were smaller than budgeting guidelines. • Hiring decisions were made in May and June 2015 based on inaccurate income projections. It is difficult to reduce salary costs once teacher contracts are signed.

What is being done to avoid this situation in the future? What is the plan to begin paying back the reimbursement from our savings for the 2016-2017 fiscal year? • A realistic budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year has been created using lessons learned from the previous year. We have planned a significant net profit in order to reimburse a portion of the loan we borrowed from our parish reserves. • Staffing reductions have been made. Fortunately, this did not compromise the overall school programming and course offerings. We “right-sized” the school staff. • The school leadership has planned a more aggressive recruitment, admissions and retention plan for this current school year to stabilize and grown enrollment.• The school advisory board is streamlining fundraising efforts to reduce the amount of “donor-fatigue” that is reported.

• The finance office will conduct regular tuition audits with the goal of reviewing the work of the tuition office to ensure projected tuition is realistic. • A reduction in day-to-day business expenditures that does not affect quality of the mission or sacrifice any quality in education.• New printers/copiers contract reducing our monthly expenses.• Better stewards of our printing with a revision of the copy codes.• Encourage better stewardship of our utilities, maintenance and office supplies.• Update of our phone/voicemail system with the intention of eliminating the cost of phone lines.• A revision of the chart of accounts to enable transparent reporting.

We hope this accounting of major financial influences from the 2015-2016 fiscal year, as well as the explanation of our proactive plan to change the financial landscape for the current year, is clear and transparent to all who support St. Benedict Parish and Preparatory School. We know that we are charged with being good stewards of all our gifts and we acknowledge this important responsibility.
