Welcome
The DR welcomes faculty, staff and students of JUST and wishes all a produc-
tive year. The academic year started with a great news “JUST Ranked 601 glob-
ally and first among Jordanian universities”. We would like to congratulate eve-
ry one at JUST and all who contributed to this achievement. We also started
2012 by the decree of JUST Board of Trustees to appoint Prof. Ahmad
Elbetieha as a Vice President. The contributions of Prof. Elbetieha to various
faculties at JUST are well noticed. The DR wishes Prof. Elbetieha all the best in
his position and we are sure that Prof. Elbetieha in his position will help the out-
standing progress at JUST.
Prof. Ahmed Elbetieha has been appointed as a Vice President of JUST
The Board of Trustees at JUST has appointed Prof. Ahmed
Elbetieha as a Vice President of JUST effective 5 January, 2012.
Professor Elbeteiha received his PhD in Developmental and Mo-
lecular Biology from University of Texas, Texas, U.S.A in 1988.
He first joined JUST as a faculty member in 1988 and became
Dean of College of Science and Arts in 2005, Dean of Graduate
Studies in 2004, and Assistant President in 2003. Professor
Elbeteiha served as a Chair of the Department of Applied Biological Sciences at
JUST (1996 to 1998). During his career, Prof. Elbeteiha had outstanding scien-
tific achievements and many national and international honors and awards.

Under Erasmus Mundus Program, a staff from 10 EU Universities visited JUST
Under Erasmus Mundus program action 2, a staff from 10 EU universities met with the president of JUST,
Prof. Abdallah I. Malkawi, on 22 November, 2011 to explore the possibilities of stu-
dents, faculty, and staff at JUST to apply to scholarships to 10 EU universities. They
also discussed future collaboration in term of people mobility between EU universi-
ties and JUST. The scholarships are financed by the EU commission under Erasmus
Mundus Action 2. After the meeting, the staff gave brief presentations to JUST stu-
dents, staff, and researchers about their universities and answered the questions of
the attendees. They also highlighted the guidelines for application and main require-
ments.
SASTA and JUST signed a memorandum of understanding The Society for the Advancement of Science and Technology in
the Arab World (SASTA) signed a memorandum of understand-
ing with JUST. After several months of discussions on how best
SASTA can serve the needs of JUST in terms of research collabo-
rations and exchange students and faculty, SASTA was invited by
JUST to sign a memorandum of understanding on 19 October,
2011.
JUST is close to achieve its vision: JUST ranks 601 globally and first among Jordanian universities
Jordan University of Science and Technology ranked 601 globally in the QS World University Rankings. The
QS World University Rankings currently considers over 2,000 universities in the world and evaluates 700
using six indicators. These include academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty per student, proportion
of international students and percentage of international faculty. According to the QS ranking, the University
of Cambridge in the UK topped world universities, followed by Harvard University and Massachusetts Insti-
tute of Technology in the US.

Activities of DR
A workshop on Technology Transfer hosted at JUST The Deanship of Research hosted a workshop on Technology Transfer at
JUST on 19 October, 2011. Dr. Feras Darwish, the director of Technology
Transfer office at the Deanship of Research at JUST, presented the tasks of
the office and highlighted the activities of the
office since its establishment. Mr. Qusay Al-
Masry from the Society for Intellectual Prop-
erty Registration (Tala-Abo Gazaleh Group)
lectured on intellectual property and how to register it including the rules and
regulations. Abdel Al-Monam Rawashdeh, director of Applied Science Re-
search Fund (ASRF), demonstrated the support provided by ASRF to applied
research, eligibility and how to apply for funds.

The DR signed a MoU with El-Hassan Business Park
Dr. Fahmi Abu Al-Rub, the Dean of Research at JUST, and Eng.
Omar Hamarneh, the General Director of El-Hassan Business Park
for Projects Development, have signed a Memorandum of Under-
standing for the collaboration in the areas of Technology Transfer
and Intellectual Property Commercialization. The MoU also aims
to enhance the participation of the Technology Transfer Office
(TTO) at JUST in the National Network of TTOs in order to ease
the transfer of the innovations and technologies from its sources at
the Jordanian Universities and Research Institutes to the public
through the active role of the local industries.
A seminar on “Opportunities for Getting Funds from FP7”
The DR at JUST hosted a seminar given by Dr. Raghda Al-Kilani, director of
International Cooperation Department at the Higher Council of Science and
Technology, on the “Opportunities for Getting Funds from European Frame-
work Program (FP7)” on 31 October, 2011.
A lecture on funding from TEMPUS
A lecture on the TEMPUS projects was presented by Prof. Ahmad Abu El-Haija, the head of
TEMPUS office in Jordan on 5 December, 2011. Prof Abu-El-Haija highlighted the regula-
tion and guidelines to apply for funds from TEMPUS. He also presented a successful stories
about funded projects and how these projects can help advance the higher education in Jor-
dan.

The Deanship of Research has participated in the following activities at the national level:
1. The staff of Deanship of Research have attended 6 workshops on capacity building held at the Higher
Council for Science and Technology (HCST) during the period 17/9 to 22/10, 2011. The workshops in-
cluded:
Building database on national, regional, and international funding agencies
Proposal preparation and writing
Project implementation and monitoring
Project financial management
Project administrative principles: Procurement of equipment, staffing and subcontracting
Project reporting and impact indicators
2. Attending a workshop on the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer for universities and research
institutes during 16-17 November, 2011, at Al-Hassan Scientific City, Amman.
3. Attending the workshop on human resources through FP7 program project EU-Jordan in 2 October, 2011,
Amman.
4. The Technology Transfer Office participated in a workshop on the Patent Collaboration Treaty hosted by
the Ministry of Trade and Commerce, in collaboration with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
during the period 2-3 November, 2011.
7th Tempus Information Day Prof. Fahmi Abu Al-Rub, Dean of Research at JUST, and other researchers
from JUST attended Jordan-European Union Higher Education Cooperation
Day (7th Tempus Day), which was held under the Patronage of Her Excellency,
the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Her Excellency
Ambassador / Head of Delegation of the European Union to Jordan at Univer-
sity of Jordan, Amman, Jordan on 27 November, 2011.
Science and Technology Training Course in Malaysia
Prof. Nezar Samarah, vice Dean of Research, attended a training course
titled “Science and Technology Management Training Course for Re-
searchers in OIC countries” during 11-16 December, 2011, in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia. This training course was organized and funded by the
Academy of Sciences Malaysia. A total of 15 participants from OIC
member countries attended this course. The objectives of the training
course were to provide participants with: 1) Theoretical insights on cur-
rent trends in science and innovation management including innovation,
science awareness, research and development, technology transfer, and
public-industry linkages; 2) Skills on sound research management practices including writing of research pro-
posals; 3) Opportunities to establish joint research collaborations among member countries. Prof. Samarah
participated in a presentation about “Science, Technology, Innovation Policy and Strategy in Jordan”. He also
spoke on behalf of the participants on the closing ceremony of the training course to thank the organizer, the
Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and to highlight some of the beneficial impacts of the course on the partici-
pants.

Upcoming Events
The First Funded Research Conference at JUST.
The Deanship of Research, in cooperation with Deanship of Graduate Studies, will hold the First Scientific
Conference for Research Projects funded by the Deanship of Research
during the period 22-25 April 2012 at Jordan University of Science and
Technology, Irbid, Jordan. The first call for abstract submission was an-
nounced by the DR on December 1st 2011. All researchers received
funds during 2009-2010 are required to participate in the conference. For

A scholarship programme for students and staff from Jordan, Syria, and Europe financed by the Euro-
pean Commission
The Deanship of Research at JUST announced the availability of scholarships for staff and students under the
Erasmus Mundus Action 2 (JOSYLEEM) on 16 November 2011. The scholarships are based on institution
mobility organized by 10 universities in the EU and 10 universities in Jordan and Syria. For Jordan, the schol-
arships are 6-10 months for the BS students, 10-22 months for the Master students, 6-34 months for the PhD
students, 6-10 months for the faculty members, and 1-3 months for the staff. The application deadline for
2012 is 10 January 2012. The electronic application is available by visiting www.josyleem.eu.
New patent registration
The Office of Technology Transfer at the Deanship of Research has supported the registration of a new US
patent for Dr. Omar Araida, Dr. Wafa Bataineh and Dr. Mohammad Jaradat entitled “Device to restrain emis-
sions in naturally ventilated environments”. This registration was done through the office of IPCO at Al-
Hassan Business Park, which allow their patent to be internationally recognized.

Dr. Rami Mukbel and Dr. Feras Darwish joined the Deanship of
Research as Assistant Deans of Research on 1 September, 2011.
Dr. Feras Darwish was appointed as a new director of the Tech-
nology Transfer Office at the Deanship of Research.

Internal and External Funded Projects at Deanship of Research in 2011
In 2011, a total of 316 projects were funded
(296 funded by JUST and 20 projects funded
externally). A total amount of 2,143,817 JD
was granted to JUST researchers (1,193,864
JD funded from JUST and 949,953 JD from
external sources). All faculties received fund-
ing from JUST as shown in Fig. 1 and Table 1.
Faculty of Agriculture received 26% of the
total funds, while Faculty of Architecture and
Design received only 0.2%.
The external funds received in 2011 were al-
most similar to the internal funds provided by
the DR (Fig. 2). Faculty of Agriculture re-
ceived the highest amount of total external
funds (416,221 JD) .

Hamza Al Kofahi and Ahmad Malkawi, students from JUST, under the supervision of
Dr. Natheer Khasawneh and Dr. Mohammad Fraiwan, have received the First Place
Award of the 2011 NYUAD International Hackathon for the Social Good in the Arab
World for their Kine Therapy application.
Distinguished Achievements
Dr. Abdel Rauf Rjoub, Department of Computer Engineering, was awarded the Fourth Place
Prize from 1st PATMOS Timing Analysis Contest, 2011 in Madrid, Spain 26th September
2011.
Dr. Mohammad AL Salameh, Department of Electrical Engineering, has published a book
entitled “Waves and Field Wireless Communication and Electricity: Health -Effect and Un-
conventional Utilizations”

Prof. Youssef Al-Najjar, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
received the Arab Creativity Award at its fifth round in 2011,
Scientific Creativity Award in research field of water and energy.
Dr. Omar Qasaimeh, Department of Electrical Engineering, was awarded the Hisham Hajjawi
Award for Applied Sciences in the field of Technology and Telecommunication for the year
2011 for his research entitled “ Effect of doping on the optical characteristics of quantum-dot
semiconductor optical amplifiers.
Dr. Munir J. Al Rusan, Faculty of Agriculture, was granted with his fellow researchers
1,800,000 Euro, (JUST portion is 358,000 Euro) for their research project entitled
“Mediterranean cooperation in the treatment and valorization of olive mill wastewater” from
the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI)
Dr. Saad Gharaibeh, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, was awarded the Hisham Hijjawi
Award for Applied Sciences in the field of “Agriculture, Water & Environment” for the year
2011 for his research entitled “Change in antimicrobial susceptibility of Mycoplasma gal-
lisepticum field isolates”.
Prof. Khalid Asfar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, was awarded a Silver Medal Cer-
tificate for the display of his invention of the Submarine, at The 4th International Fair in the
Middle East hosted by the Kuwait Science Club in October, 2011.
Omar El-Qawasmeh (Mech. Eng.) and Nadia Al-Makhadmeh (Civil Eng.), students from JUST,
were awarded a Silver Medal Certificate for the display of S.B.S. (Super Brake System), at the
4th International Fair in the Middle East hosted by the Kuwait Science Club in October, 2011.

Funding Secured by JUST Researchers from Scientific Research Support Fund
Dr. Bashar Altaani, Faculty of Pharmacy, and fellow researchers (Dr. Adnan Badwan, Dr. Ayman Obidat, Dr.
Bassam Tobishat, Dr. Ayad Rasheed and Ayman Khdair) were granted 163,293 JD for their research project enti-
tled “Structured polymeric aggregates nano-particles based on chitosan for sustained release delivery of NSAIDs
to children in liquid dosage form”.
Yazan Husain, Faculty of Engineering, was granted 52,862 for his research project entitled "Surface modifi-
cations for commercial and laboratory synthesized membranes for water treatment applications ".
Dr. Nizar Mohidat , Faculty of Pharmacy, and fellow researcher (Dr. Qusai Albalas, Dr. Areej Assaf, Dr.
Omar Khaboor and Dr. Suliman Swaidan) were granted 100,409 JD for their research project entitled “The
endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in human colorectal cancer”,.
Dr. Saad Abo Qdaid, Faculty of Engineering, and fellow researchers (Dr. Ibrahiam Khalil and Dr. Eyman
Awad) were granted 64,116 JD for their research project entitled "Feasibility of using reclaimed asphalt mix-
tures in construction and maintenance".

Dr. Tariq Qasim, Faculty of Engineering, and fellow researcher (Dr. Suzan Alkhateep) were granted 47,448
JD for their research project entitled "Failure modes in biomechanical ceramic-based layed structures in dry
and wet conditions relevance to failure of dental restorations"
Dr. Mohammad Alsaleh, Faculty of Engineering, was granted 74,504 JD for his research project entitled
"Conductive polymer nano composites for electromagnetic interference shielding applications".
Dr. Khalil Jwasreh, Faculty of Agriculture, and fellow researchers (Dr. Abdallah AbdAllah, Hotheifeh Ab-
abneh, Hani Talafha, Faiq Hjazeen) was granted 51,861 JD for their research project entitled "Caracas charac-
teristics of the first cross between calliypyge sheep and awassi local breed".
